I can’t believe it is June already. What a start to the year it has been. In our last edition I spoke about the impact of the then recent Covid shutdowns, but little did any of us realise, there was more devastation to come. Our beautiful Northern Rivers has been through a tremendous amount these past few months. Just as we were due to release our March issue, the first round of floods hit the region, bringing with them so much heartache and loss. To be hit by the second round of floods was almost too much to bear, however, what we then witnessed was our amazing community spirit come alive and to the fore. Strangers on the frontlines helping strangers, banding together, cooking, cleaning, giving of their time and resources, and making hope possible. We’re not through it yet, but we are getting there, little by little, together stronger. What this issue hopes to highlight is all that our beautiful region has to offer locals and tourists alike, and the power of joining together as a community. Our winter feature showcases our abundance of outstanding regional restaurants – with not one or two but twenty Northern Rivers locals taking out AGFG Chef Hat awards! We have highlighted some of the amazing organisations that have helped us through the floods, and we bring you a wrap-up of the one and only Bluesfest, which came back with a muchneeded bang! Read on to find all the ways to escape the winter blues, with lots to do through the colder months. Do a shopping crawl along the coastline, get your hands dirty with clay and discover the spirits of the Northern Rivers. Our little team has also had some changes of late, with a new Editor coming on board. In recent years the Northern Rivers has become a Mecca for creative chefs and inspired restaurateurs, drawn to the region’s lush landscape, laidback lifestyle, farm fresh ingredients and artisanal products. So, when the Australian Good Food Guide announced their Chef Hat award winners for 2022, we weren’t surprised that 20 of the restaurants are right here on our doorstep. Here’s a taste of what’s cooking across the region. FOREST Sophisticated yet supremely chilled, Forest at Crystalbrook Byron is imbued with a distinct sense of place, from sublime views over a lush swathe of rainforest, to cuisine that is passionately local with over 80% of ingredients coming from within a three-hour drive of the restaurant. It’s all about sustainability and “using the best produce we can get our hands on,” says Executive Chef Jordan Staniford, the visionary behind a seasonally driven menu comprised of sustainable seafood, free range meat and flavourful native ingredients grown in the surrounding rainforests and dunes. Creatively presented dishes are fresh, imaginative, and ultimately playful. Expect chargrilled Ballina king prawns with gremolata and spicy XO chilli oil, Iluka squid pan-roasted with Forest tapenade, lemon and herbs, and Basque burnt cheesecake with house-made resort honey ice cream. Enchanting by day, Forest takes on a magical (and rather romantic) allure in the evenings, bathed in the soft glow of lanterns with the rainforest illuminated by spotlight. You will be tempted to linger, so consider the Taste of Forest 5-course degustation menu (vegan option available) paired with sustainable, organic wines from an intriguing wine list. Prefer a cocktail? How about a Byron-esque Fairy Dust Martini or a healthy Recharge from the Elixir Bar. Open to outside guests, Forest is ideal for those looking for an indulgent night out in Byron Bay.

CADEAU RESTAURANT Laid-back Brunswick Heads is the perfect setting for this classy eatery created by husband-and-wife team, chef Giorgio Ravelli and Holly Ottignon. While the vibe is chilled there is nothing casual about the full flavour, European-influenced cuisine, led by premium local ingredients and a nose to tail ethos so that nothing goes to waste. “Chefs and foodies love eating with us, as they know they are not going to get the same thing anywhere else,” says Holly. Giorgio can often be spotted chatting with his vegetable suppliers at the New Brighton Market, or selecting the special catch of the day from a local trawler at the Brunswick Heads Co-op. This translates on the menu in dishes like Market fish with Madagascar bean cassoulet and Montpellier butter, and Misty Creek chicken, Jerusalem artichoke dauphine and creamed kale. The wine list and craft cocktails are equally impressive, with interesting artwork and an eclectic soundtrack further enhancing the experience. Dining with friends? Let Georgio dazzle you with a selection of dishes in the Chef’s banquet, and if you are hankering for a Sunday Roast with all the trimmings this warm and cosy spot is the best in the area. PAPER DAISY Fringed by palm trees and pandanus, just metres from Cabarita Beach and the crashing surf, an evocative coastal theme pervades Paper Daisy. Think stylish blue and white décor, retro coastal charm, and a menu that favours sustainable seafood, seaweed and succulents foraged right along the shoreline. Executive Chef Jason Barratt honed his skills in some of Melbourne’s top restaurants and his artful, harmonious dishes blend skilful technique with boundless inspiration. Potager

With a wonderful setting in a converted farmhouse in the picturesque hills of Carool, Potager is high on the feel-good factor. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens, the 10-acre property boasts panoramic views that stretch to the southern Gold Coast, so close yet a world away from this charming pocket of the Tweed hinterland. TWEED RIVER HOUSE Perched on the lush grassy banks of the Tweed River, this lovingly restored grand old river house combines colonial-style glamour with a contemporary, ever evolving seasonal menu to memorable effect. Executive Chef Joseph McGrattan honed his talents in Michelin star restaurants in Europe and applies classic techniques to shape seasonal menus starring locally grown, organic and indigenous ingredients. NO 35 KITCHEN AND BAR The newest Hatted restaurant on the block, No.35 had an instant following from the day it opened in July 2021, with loyal patrons drawn to the casual contemporary atmosphere and tasty, authentic new world Italian cuisine. Created by restaurateur Rachel Duffy, and chef Daniel Medcalf, the food is of the calibre you would expect from a duo that honed their skills in some of Sydney’s most iconic restaurants, including Icebergs. “We wanted to do everyday Italian really well,” says Rachel, and they have achieved just that with dishes like golden crumbed Arancini, a wonderfully aromatic Carnaroli rice with autumn mushrooms and saffron, Spaghetti nero with swimmer crab, roasted tomato and chilli, and the smoothest Tiramisu this side of Italy. A good selection of Spritzes make for a tasty aperitivo, while Rachel’s passion for minimal intervention wines is represented in a thoughtful wine list. Award-winning restaurants and kids don’t always go well together, but No. 35 is refreshingly family friendly and has a fun kid’s menu (who doesn’t love pasta with butter and parmesan, cheesy arancini and gelato), so you can still enjoy a great meal out even with the kids in tow. BERNARD FANNING IN CONVERSATION

Our publisher Karen, caught up with music legend Bernard Fanning, to chat about all things – from the return of festivals and live music to the pandemic and raising awareness for mental health… and of course, living like a local in the Northern Rivers! Bernard we’re thrilled that you could chat to us. How are you? What’s been happening in your world now that we have a little more freedom back?

I’m doing well! Once things started to open up a bit, I had a few postponed shows to make up for. One in Victoria that was supposed to happen in March 2020 and got postponed to March 2021, and then finally to March 2022! During the pandemic I was mostly writing, but after the floods, I did a flood benefit show, Flood Aid, in Brisbane, which was one part of the Secret Sounds group of shows

that happened in Bryon Bay, Brisbane and Sydney. The Northern Rivers has been through some pretty tough times recently, firstly with covid then the floods, which have really shown us the community spirit we have in this region. I know you were on board, helping with the clean-up as well as the amazing flood aid concert. How did this all come about?

It was a real no-brainer that I would do something. My manager Paul Dempsey, who is one of the two main proponents of Splendour in the Grass, lives in the 14

region and experienced first-hand what was happening here. His partner in Secret Sounds, Jessica Ducrou, is also heavily invested in the area and they asked me to be involved and I said yes, of course. There was already a strong lineup in Byron that would’ve sold all the tickets here, so I ended up doing the Brisbane show to raise some more money. How did the event pan out, was it a success?

then the fires before that, people have been struggling so much. Fortunately, the concert was a great success, and we were able to raise a lot of money. A disaster of the scale that we’ve had here is so massive – there was so much destruction, it was like a warzone – that, as much as we contribute as private citizens, and despite the incredible amount of goodwill and funds the community provided, it’s really government money that’s required.

Music brings people together, it brings some happiness, especially in desperate times.

You’re originally from Brisbane but live here in the region now. What was it that made you move to Byron Bay?

I’ve been attached to Byron since I was about 17 years old. I started coming here as soon as I finished school in the mid ‘80s, camping with my brother and my friends at The First Sun Caravan Park and coming to Bluesfest when it was at the Piggery, going to The Top Pub when it was an old fibro shack and seeing whatever band was on. In 2008 my wife, who is from Spain, and I came down and lived in Kingscliff for quite a while before we moved back to Spain. Then in 2015 we decided we were going to move to Byron when myself and good friend Nick DiDia, who made most of the Powderfinger records (and is a world-renowned producer and engineer of Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine and Neil Young), opened a recording studio in Byron - that was kind of the clincher! I ran into you at blues fest, how fantastic was Baker Boy’s cover of “Wish you well”!

buy tickets; our learned behaviour is now to be uncertain about what’s happening next week. Hopefully that’s starting to dissipate a little bit now. And once we get the festivals going again, I think they will give people a bit more confidence. Support Act is designed to help people, not just musicians, but crew as well as people that are part of the music industry actively touring or have been actively touring, that fall on hard times, whether it’s through illness or global pandemic. At the beginning of 2020, Powderfinger were having meetings and talking for the first time in 10 years about the anniversary of Odyssey Number Five. We were talking regularly about what we were going do for that because there was going to be special releases. Things [with the Pandemic] were getting worse and worse, and we were asking ourselves what can we do, can we release a song or how can we help? Someone said we should do a gig, which was a joke because we couldn’t even physically get together anyway - I was in New South Wales and half the band are in Queensland, and Darren is in Melbourne – but the idea just kind of took root and we started talking about a live virtual concert. There were lots of artists doing these virtual shows, we just thought, if we’re going to try, let’s do it really well. There were obviously so many mental health implications that have come out of the pandemic and we wanted to raise as much money as we could for Beyond Blue as well as Support Act, so we did “One night lonely”. Of course, there were so many people involved who helped pull it all together. You teased us with “One Night Lonely”, is there any chance we will see Powderfinger reunite for a tour?

Ha, no! We are all doing our own thing, JC runs the Triffid and the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, Ian is in the band, The Church, and Darren has his own stuff going on, he’s been doing a lot of Neil Young and Beatles shows, and I am making my own records. There’s plenty

happening and while none of us would never say never, it’d be a while off if it was to ever happen again. I believe you are bunkering down and writing music again for a new album, when are we going to get the chance to hear your new music and are we going to hear a new sound from Bernard Fanning?

I’ve been writing stuff for ages but these last couple of years everyone’s priorities have flipped around. It’s been a reset for many, including me. I’ve been lucky, I live in a great street and have been able to spend more time with my kids and my wife, hanging like a local. I haven’t landed exactly on the sound that I’m looking to exploit, the fun thing is just sitting around and making new stuff up. For me is the most thrilling part of the whole process is the actual act of creation - something appearing that wasn’t there a few minutes ago. I haven’t got a definite timeframe, but I would say it’s likely that I would record something later this year to come out next year. I’m just trying to enjoy the process, that’s the main thing!

That was one of the reasons we were there. He was awesome, it was a great show. I’ve never seen him play live. I’ve seen him play a song or two, but I’ve never seen him in concert, the vibe was massive. He’s done wonders with the song, given it a whole new lease of life and it was pretty cool. I didn’t see much else, unfortunately I tested positive for Covid next morning! It’s been a tough couple of years for performing artists. Tell us about your involvement with the organisation Support Act, and how you see the future of live music?

It’s great that things are starting to get back into gear. I think there is still a bit of hesitation out there from people to

HUSK DISTILLERY Husk Distillers is the home of the renowned Ink Gin, that starts off ink blue and changes to a blush pink hue by adding a splash of tonic or citrus. Made famous by Margot Robbie who put Husk on the map when she posted a photo to her adoring fans.

DOS DRAGONE DISTILLERY Locally owned and operated Dos Dragone Distillery are the makers of the popular Stoken Gin. A small batch brewery with aptly named spirits like ‘XII Apostles’ and ‘Here Be Dragons’, infused with botanicals such as locally grown dragon fruit. Nestled on Cudgera Creek Northern NSW the native flora gives the gin a distinct full flavour. Bursting with bright colours Stoken Gin has become a cocktail staple at local bars and is available from independent bottle shops throughout the region. Expertly distilled from a small copper still fondly called ‘Rasputin’, Dos Dragone Distillery has cemented itself as a popular spirit for the Tweed Region.

SOLTERA RUM Handcrafted in Cabarita, Soltera Rum is female owned and operated by a Tweed local. Makers of the fresh rum ‘Blanco’ which, with its pure, clean taste, is an ideal mixer for finger lime mojitos or tangy piña coladas, Soltera style. An unaged rum infused in oak barrels with tasting notes from the Caribbean to Cabarita. Soltera Rum conjures up images of dreamy days sipping sunset cocktails at beachside bars.

BYRON BAY SPIRITS Harvested and handcrafted in the Byron Hinterland, Byron Bay Spirits distills an array of spirits and liqueurs as nature intended. From coffee liqueurs to tasty limoncello,

Husk created Australia’s first Agricole rum, from their farm paddock direct to the bottle. The distillery grows an abundance of sugar cane which is threaded through the Husk collection, such as Bam Bam Spiced Rum and Husk Botanic - a rum for the gin drinker. Husk is located on the banks of the Tweed River with the majestic Wollumbin Mountain over yonder, in the quaint valley town of Tumbulgum. A popular destination, the exposed brick building is adorned by sculptured gardens, lush green acres, and a plantation-style fit out. A collection of world class spirits that engages ethical and sustainable practices, including a 12-year aged, spiced rum and a silver cane white spirit. With the news all music revellers have been waiting for - live music festivals are back! – comes confirmation that one of the most popular events in the country, ‘Splendour in the Grass’ is set to soar high from the 22nd-24th July.

full line-up has been announced with heavyweight headliners such as Gorillaz, The Strokes, Tyler, The Creator and Liam Gallagher leading the pack. Along with local and national talent and some unearthed surprises from Triple J, the festival is wired for sound. A celebration of International and Australian acts, Splendour is one of the country’s most anticipated events to bounce back after a forced hiatus. The dedicated team behind Splendour, Secret Sounds, have endured one of the most challenging periods of their creative lives and are committed to bringing live music and good times back to the people. Included in the Australian line-up are Baker Boy, Grinspoon, Alice Ivy, Jungle Giants and Tim Minchin, along with a stellar line-up of DJ’s. Rising talent and local Bundjalung performer Budjerah will perform on home soil, after taking out this year’s Aria for Michael Gudinski’s Breakthrough Artist Award. Splendour in the Grass co-founders Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco have expressed how deeply grateful they are for the ongoing community support and loyalty in what has been one helluva time. “We want to wholeheartedly thank our Splendour community for sticking with us. Welcome to the Humpback Highway, a migratory route that begins in the icy depths of Antarctica then follows the eastern coastline of Australia, ending in the warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef. A 10,000-kilometre round trip, this is one of the longest migratory journeys on earth, and here, at the most easterly tip of Australia, is the best place to see the action. Hunted to near extinction, humpback whales have made a remarkable recovery since the 1960s and form the majority of the estimated 30,000 whales – which includes orcas, blue whales, minke whales and sperm whales, that will migrate this year. Seeing these magnificent creatures frolic around our picturesque headlands is a truly unforgettable experience. Catch them swimming north to their breeding grounds from May to July, then southbound from September to November, when you will often see females teaching their calves the art of whale behaviour. That means breeching (leaping out of the water) lobtailing (tailslapping) logging (floating on the surface of the water) and spy hopping (poking their heads out of the water). Prime whale watching spots include Cape Byron Lighthouse walking track, Hastings Point, Norries Headland in Cabarita, Skennars Head and Ballina Lighthouse car park. A gorgeous new location for starters, with marquees set up amidst the rolling green pastures and coastal forest of North Byron Parklands. 140 guest writers and thinkers will be covering topics from the arts to poetry, memoir, fiction, social issues, and politics, in the form of panels, readings, lectures and performances. Coffee, food, and market stalls will add to the festival vibe, while satellite events will also take place across the region in the evenings. MINJUNGBAL ABORIGINAL CENTRE Interested to know more about the indigenous history of the Northern Rivers? The Minjungbal Aboriginal Cultural Centre has a humble yet fascinating museum packed full of artefacts, photographs and pictorial displays that paint a very vivid picture of

life and culture for the Tweed’s original inhabitants. Run by the area’s Aboriginal community, you can also browse handcrafted ceramics and paintings by local artists in the small gift shop. Part of the Tweed Heads Historic site, the centre is nestled into a shady grove and makes a peaceful spot for a picnic or barbecue. Make sure to check out the Bora Ring, a sacred ceremonial site used for ancient initiation rites, then follow one of the walking tracks through the trees into Ukerebagh Nature Reserve and the banks of the Tweed River. THE BIG BLUE: KAYAK WITH DOLPHINS Watching the local pod of bottlenose dolphins surf the waves off Wategos is always a thrill, but seeing them up close on a kayak trip, is even better. Here’s another one to put back into your annual calendar of events (after the couple of years that were), the ever-popular Byron Writers Festival 26-28 August 2022. Billed to be a weekend full of bright ideas and engaging storytelling with some of Australia’s best-loved authors. The festival has just announced its dates for this year’s event, with a brandspanking new festival site on the horizon, the picturesque North Byron Parklands, and a new Artistic Director at the helm, Zoe Pollock. Bringing back everything we love about the event plus a whole lot more, the new site and artistic vision adds a fresh dimension to the renowned festival.

A favourite on MasterChef, owner Mindy Woods combines her Indigenous heritage with her experience of living in Asia to showcase Indigenous foods on the world stage.

can the isles in your local supermarket and you might find pepperberry vinegar, Kakadu plum jelly and ironbark honey. Exploring our backyard and a renewed interest in native foods is so much more than fads and flavours.

“Australians are such foodies!” explains Mindy Woods, co-owner, Head Chef and creative force at Karkalla restaurant in Byron Bay. “We are quick to embrace the cuisines and cultures of other nations. At Karkalla we are trying to provide an opportunity for people to connect with Indigenous culture through food. In Mindy’s experience, non-indigenous people are often hesitant to ask questions and be inquisitive about Indigenous culture because of negativity of the past. “As a culture we are wanting to take steps forward in a positive way. We know we have to hold the hands of Non-Indigenous people to do that,” she says. “Introducing people to Indigenous culture through food is such a positive thing. There are important conversations that happen when we ‘break bread’ together. 32

One way to help engage people with Indigenous ingredients is the use of language in the restaurant menu. “Naming things in local terms allows Indigenous cultures to reclaim their language,” says Mindy. “For example, we have finger limes - gulalung in Bundjalung language - a native food unique to the Northern Rivers area.” These pearls of bright, exquisite citrus are used extensively on the menu, especially when paired with fresh oysters. The menu at Karkalla reflects the breadth of Mindy’s food identity and history. “My dad was in the Air Force and my early childhood was spent growing up in Malaysia,” she says. “Our current menu features Asian cooking techniques and flavours using local Indigenous produce. The two cuisines work seamlessly together in terms of flavours. It brings all my history together.” The starter dish of salt and pepper berry encrusted calamari, served in an intensely rich XO sauce, is an example of this blending of technique and ingredients in a seamless and exciting way. Mindy has always had a strong affinity with the Northern Rivers area. “My mum was born in Lismore, and I have my whole family in the area,” she says. “We have ancestry through the Widjabul Wia-bal tribe, part of the Bunjalung nation.” The Northern Rivers is a traditional food bowl for many Indigenous groups. Traditionally tribes would travel from Southeast Queensland and Central and Northern New South Wales, harvesting and collecting native ingredients. After ten years as a successful chef and CEO of The Lotus Dining Group, Mindy felt a calling to return home to her ancestral land. Her move back to the region from Sydney was driven by her desire to connect with family and with her Indigenous roots. “One of my memories is being at South Ballina beach with my nan and cousins,

picking karkalla and collecting pipis on the beach,” she recalls. “Nan raised eleven children and multiple cousins harvesting mud crab, mullet, and river mussels. At the time we didn’t realise she was uniting us as a family with our culture.” “I always had a desire to open my own restaurant and I couldn’t have opened Karkalla anywhere else in the world,” Mindy explains. “Karkalla is the local Indigenous name for the coastal purple flowering succulent known as ‘pigface’, so the restaurant is all about joining Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people together through food, right here on Bundjalung country.” Mindy works closely with local suppliers to source ingredients like lemon myrtle, Coopers Shoot tomatoes, and freshly caught seafood. “We love to support local industry,” Mindy explains, “it is the best produce in Australia, and it makes our job as chefs incredibly easy, when we can put that produce pride of place on our menu.” And while these are ancient ingredients, at Karkalla they are interpreted in a very modern way. “Indigenous people are modern and highly educated. Our connection to culture is incredibly strong and we are very proud of that. But we are not talking about just cooking witchetty grubs or kangaroo over coals,” says Mindy. “We are treating world class ingredients with love and respect and interpreting them in a modern way.” For example, the traditional changing of the six seasons are celebrated at Karkalla with a set menu seasonal dinner which highlights the ingredients that are available at that time. “We may be going into storm season or winter season, so we feature ingredients specific to that time which brings a greater awareness to our diners of what those seasonal changes are and what to look for,” Mindy says. 33

Karkalla also features an all-Australian wine list, and a cocktail list full of classics. “The finger lime margherita is the most popular by a long stretch” says Mindy. “We also infuse our own gins and vodkas with native ingredients, such as Australian gin infused with native thyme. It makes the meanest negroni imaginable!” she says with a grin. Mindy’s name might be familiar to you from her time as a contestant and finalist on MasterChef. That was back in 2012 and she has recently returned to the series as an absolute favourite in the Fans & Favourites series. “I’m someone who likes to be busy, and I love a challenge,” laughs Mindy. “Throwing MasterChef on top of running a small business has certainly had its challenges but I do it with great zest and an immense sense of pride and my team has very much stepped up and supported me throughout this crazy ride.” “I hope that, if nothing else, MasterChef will really showcase what native food is all about and put a spotlight on the beautiful region that is the Northern Rivers.” For more bookings and more information visit karkalla.com.au

Locale Mag was fortunate to grab a moment with the one and only Xavier Rudd just before he embarks on his national tour. Taking in 38 venues across the country, the show promises to be the event to get to this year. Xavier, thanks for talking to us. How are you?

I’m great, thanks. You have a huge year ahead with your tour and new album “Jan Juc Moon” release. It must be an exciting time for you to get back out and perform again?

It’s going to be a bit of a crazy year but I’m pretty keen now to get out on the road. We’ve put together a show I’m really proud of so I’m excited to go and share it now. Was Jan Juc Moon written through covid and the lockdowns? What was the inspiration for your 10th album?

A lot of it was, and some over the years before that. It’s been kind of a reflective

album, looking back during this time when the world was so unstable, and at the journey as a whole.

How did the collaboration with Bundjalung men Josh and Kyle Slabb come about? And was that song created here in the Northern NSW rivers?

Josh, Kyle, and Juzzy are good friends of mine, and when I told Josh about my eagle song he sent me a version of their Mibin (eagle) song and straight away I could tell it would work. No, I recorded the album up at home in the Sunny Coast, but we did record their parts down in the Byron area. Out of all the songs on Jan Juc Moon, do you have a favourite and why?

Nah, I don’t really have favourites, they are all special to me in their own ways. I love the album cover. Was this a local artist that created it?

It’s amazing! It’s a painting by Nathan Patterson, I love his stuff, he’s deadly! His Insta is @diwanadreaming How good was it to be back at the Bluesfest and how awesome was the line-up! Did you have a favourite performance that stood out?

It was great. It’s always a good time. To me, Kingfish was an absolute stand out, he’s amazing, and I loved Corey Henry’s trio. Is there a musician you are most inspired by at the moment?

Vaughn Benjamin is always with me, love him. What’s your weekend ritual; where would we find you and what would you be doing on a typical Saturday/ Sunday when not touring?

Outside definitely. With my cattle dogs and family camping somewhere in our troopy, hopefully scoring some nice waves! You have previously lived here in the Northern Rivers; can you let us in on some of your faves? Your favourite beach, or a favourite place to eat, drink, and unwind?

n the wake of a double flood disaster, despair is understandable. Comfort may be found then, as the adage goes, in looking for the ‘helpers’ and discovering just how many caring people there are in the world. Out of the flood tragedy a little group came to the fore, although in truth they’d already been earnestly squirrelling away behind the scenes since the ‘School Strike 4 Climate’ march two years prior. It was after the black summer bushfires, that local actress Zoe Gameau, and a group of her friends, feeling hopeless about what to do in the face of climate change, began to meet up on a regular basis to brainstorm ideas of ways to help. Completely under-resourced but moved by a desire to set ‘something’ in place if, and when, it was needed. Recently we spoke to Tiff Richmond, a group member about how their ‘little group’ aptly named - THE RADICAL HOPE CLUB - created big change, and how we can do the same. Tell us in your own words about The Radical Hope Club – who are you? What did you want the club to be about?

We’re a bunch of local women meeting regularly around climate issues. After the Strike 4 Climate march, the reality that we have around eleven years to get the climate sorted on Planet Earth, really hit home. So, we decided to create a regular space to talk about the climate and to come up with ideas and actionable things we can work on as a group within our community. The great Joan Baez quote, ‘Action is the antidote to despair’ was our inspiration. How did you figure out ways to help or what to do in the face of such a huge global issue?

The hugeness of the issue on a global

scale is overwhelming so we focus on our local community. To date a lot of our action has been in reaction to needs in the community, for example, flood recovery.

During the flood crisis, how did you step into action, and how did you motivate others to do the same?

Amidst the immense devastation there were some silver linings. Feeling more intertwined and interconnected in our community than ever before. Getting to witness people’s core goodness and generosity in the face of adversity and the strength of community we have here in the Northern Rivers.

The thing about already having a strong network of women bonded from meeting for the past two years meant that when the floods hit, we could mobilise quickly. We were already on the same page, could communicate what was needed and coordinate group efforts to help. That has always been at the centre of The Radical Hope Club – what we could achieve as a group felt more impactful than trying to figure it out individually. Others looking to help, would jump in on the action, as it felt coordinated (and I’d say enjoyable) being part of a group that was on the ground helping. What were the greatest needs that you were able to meet?

After the immediate, adrenalin fuelled response in the first weeks, women within the group started coordinating their own sub-groups based on their strengths. We had a Radical Cooking Club, Radical Cleaning Club and Radical Solutions Club to meet the needs in the community. We made hundreds of meals together that went out to Lismore, Mullumbimby, and Ballina. And the “solutions” group were initially working on finding short term accommodation for the displaced then moved onto creative fundraising strategies. What did you find the most surprising?

How community-led the response was. Which meant our little climate club suddenly experienced first-hand, the deep need for more groups like ours moving forward into a future of - no doubt - more 38

As difficult as is it to imagine, were there any positives to come out of this experience?

If others wanted to do something, what are some practical steps they could take?

Gather people around and begin meeting up in a deliberate way around climate. The Radical Hope Club is currently creating a framework to help people get started setting up their own climate club. What does it mean to you?

Before we started this group, hope was a word I didn’t really connect with. It felt too grim for my eternally optimistic heart. And passive. Radical hope envisions a future others can’t yet see. Paired with “active hope” i.e., actively working on creating the future you want to see - this is the essence of our Radical Hope Club. What final message would The Radical Hope Club like to give to others?

Try not to let overwhelm get in the way of acting where you can. Find the place in your life where you have the most agency and begin there. And get a group going! It’s way better and more fun doing this work together.

A PART-TIME RANGER

A dream come true

From cleaning up the beautiful beaches of Byron, helping reforest the hinterland and getting stuck in during the floods, Deano Steele-Bennett’s business, Byron Rangers, is a force for good.

n establishing Byron Rangers, Dean Steele-Bennett created his dream job. He now spends his days leading and inspiring people to take action on conservation and, more recently, floodrecovery projects. “As a kid, all I wanted was to be a park ranger,” says Deano, the nickname everyone uses, recalling countless hours he spent as a child and teenager alongside his mother on tree-planting and beach clean-ups. “But there were maybe three jobs a year with thousands of people applying so it seemed unattainable.” Deano followed a very different path, working in management consulting and executive recruitment. Yet, his childhood plan kept niggling. “I wanted to bring like-minded people together who want to make things better,” he says. So, he started Byron Rangers, a business rather than a not-for-profit organisation. “We’re a mission-driven for-profit business in the service of the environment and community,” he says. “This gives us speed, flexibility and far less bureaucracy.” Deano, who grew up in Yamba, chose Byron because of its strong culture of volunteering. “There’s a high percentage of people here who are interested in the environment and in community,” he says. “At the time I started, three years ago, Byron had the largest volunteer time per capita than anywhere else in Australia.” Byron Rangers is based around a novel

idea fuelled by Deano’s childhood inspiration. He asked himself: What if people could be a volunteer park ranger? Becoming a Byron Ranger allows you to do just that; by paying a $97 annual membership, volunteer Rangers are invited to contribute whatever time feels manageable to take action on projects including beach clean-ups, tree-planting, animal rescue and more. Three years on, the benefits for individuals is greater than Deano ever expected. “They feel great to be doing something practical but they’re also developing incredible friendships with amazing people,” he says. “That became evident during Covid lockdowns, when the Rangers were looking out for each other, they had someone to reach out to.” A key attribute that Rangers are asked to show up with is positivity. “Rangers take action, we roll our sleeves up and make a positive contribution,” he says.

As membership, sponsorship and awareness of the Byron Rangers grows, Deano no longer has to field calls from people assuming he works for the council and can help find their lost dog. “There was some intial confusion with the name,” he says. “But now, a Byron Ranger is known as a happy, positive person who gets things done.” Now Deano is living his childhood dream, that description absolutely applies to him. This showed strongly during the floods earlier this year. Focus turned fully to flood rescue and recovery for some time before being balanced with their original conservation activities. Since starting over three years ago, Byron Rangers have clocked up around 5,000 hours, a similar number of kilograms of rubbish removed from beaches and planted more than 20,000 trees. “Many organisations do their impact reporting annually or quarterly, but we do ours weekly as these figures answer the 39

ost of us responded to the news and images of the devastating recent flood events in Northern NSW with shock and dismay. It quickly became clear that the government and emergency service response was limited and fragmented. Individuals helping one another formed most of the emergency response. Alisha Williams was equally overwhelmed. She saw that social media could be an effective way to communicate but a lot of posts calling for help, including urgent cries for rooftop rescues, were being reposted as screen shots, muddling timelines, and making it impossible to work out where people were and what they needed. “There was no centralised site that published verified stories requesting help coming from the ground,” Alisha says. “It was nearly impossible to confirm any of that information.”

With a background in web design and marketing, Alisha headed to Byron Bay from her home in Brisbane two days after the initial flood disaster. Her aim was to create a simple webpage where those who required assistance could post what they needed via an “I need help” link. This information would be translated in real time to a series of posts on Instagram. If someone could respond, a simple click on the “I can help” link allowed them to be matched to those in need. Alisha stumbled into Anne Durham, who offered help and guidance over the coming weeks, as well as others discussing how to connect with people in need. Floods Recovery 2022 was up and running and within a few days gathered 25,000 followers on Instagram. Over the following weeks, the platform would connect hundreds of volunteers with those in need. “At one point we were receiving three

messages a second from people saying, “I want to help. Where can I go?”‘ Alisha recalls. In a world affected by climate change, warnings are that natural disasters on this scale will occur more frequently. “The federal government has made it clear that the community will increasingly be relied upon in a disaster,” says Alisha. “Floods Recovery 2022 is a community first-responder platform. Instead of random people coming together and struggling to coordinate a response, community members in local areas could be trained on how to use a system like this.” Floods Recovery 2022 is looking for partners in the business and philanthropic areas to help find solutions and develop the platform. “We are all part of a community. What has happened to others might happen to us,” Alisha says. “We all need each other.” LOCALEMAGAZINE.COM.AU

OF THE REGIONAL PROPERTY MARKET It’s no secret that last year’s Northern Rivers property market saw phenomenal growth in a short period due to a huge surge in post lockdown sea and tree changes. People came in droves from Sydney and interstate, particularly Victoria, seeking a change of pace and a lifestyle that once seemed out of reach.

In the conversations I’ve had with buyers and sellers, it’s clear that people are reassessing their priorities and selling their homes, to be closer to family or in search of a better lifestyle. The new wave of remote work means that buyers are no longer confined to the big cities and are increasingly attracted to areas like the Northern Rivers. Here they can balance work and life with easy access to beautiful beaches, world heritage-listed rainforests, cosy villages and all the amenities you need to raise a family. Who wouldn’t want that? We’re also seeing locals making lifestyle changes but staying within the region; they’re downsizing or upsizing and moving to other towns in the Northern Rivers. With interest rate rises being announced and the election dominating the news for the past few months, we have definitely felt a downward shift in the market. The recent floods have caused heartache and devastation across our community, and this too has contributed to a slow down in the market. Interstate buyers are understandably cautious about purchasing amid the uncertainty. 54

Unfortunately, the floods have also placed increased pressure on the rental market and rental prices have surged to meet demand. Overall, the hectic pace of buying and selling has slowed, and the market is stabilising. Rather than being a negative indicator, in fact it’s a natural progression; our region could not sustain last year’s growth indefinitely. I don’t foresee the market ‘crashing’ or dropping dramatically but expect it to settle back into its normal rhythm. Whilst there is some post-Covid anxiety around build costs and material shortages, we are so lucky to live in an area where demand is always going to be high. There is next to no land available and no development on the cards, so it stands to reason that our area will hold its value. Buyers will continue to be attracted to the lifestyle of our region, but it’s the strong sense of community spirit that will keep them here for generations. As long term locals, we are always excited to welcome new families to our community and take great pride in helping our vendors with the whole sales process to achieve the best outcomes when selling their homes.

The moment we enter the Tyagarah festival site we hear that familiar Blues sound, and quickly realise it’s happening - Byron Bay Blues Festival is back with gusto.

fter a spate of false starts, the resilient team behind the iconic event have pulled off their 33rd festival and nothing was going to stop them (fires, floods, or pandemics). Kicking off Thursday afternoon with a welcome to Bundjalung country, the stage is set and poised for the thousands of eager music lovers to welcome live music back. The five-day program is jam packed with music royalty, such as Midnight Oil, Crowded House, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, The Angels, and Jimmy Barnes. Epic Australian acts with a few international performers sprinkled in for good measure, restoring a nation’s creative hope, the future of live music festivals rests firmly in their hands. That’s the thing about Blues, you head for the headline acts and end up discovering some hidden gems along the way. Like Spinifex Gum, billed as an Australian made collaboration of voice, sound and change. We are immediately sent into a trance with the sound of Marliya, a 16-strong choir of talented indigenous female singers. Driven by change, this ensemble of young women, have a global message to deliver loud and clear and we’re all listening. Threaded with inclusion, climate change and just a touch of anarchy, this surprise act is the perfect entrée for Tijuana Cartel, Caravãna Sun and Cat Empire to follow. Next up in the iconic Mojo Tent is Tijuana

Cartel, hailing from the Gold Coast, they have been the centre of the electronic and Latin music scene for a few decades now. Front man Pauly George met his partner in Tijuana crime Carey O’Sullivan, at high school in their early teens, the self-proclaimed music geeks haven’t looked back since.

Tijuana Cartel take you on a journey beginning with dreamy flamenco guitar riffs and finishing with roof raising dance beats, it’s like riding a horse through the Arizona Desert to drink tequila in Tijuana as the sun goes down. Sutherland Shire lads Caravãna Sun follow suit with an energised set, the band is tight, and the vibe is high. A lively surf rocker beat, their raw energy engages the crowd to sing along. Known for their live performances, Caravãna Sun embody the life of a touring band and the crowd goes wild. Rounding off Day 1 in style, The Cat Empire take to the stage for the last time as an original line-up. After twenty incredible years preforming and touring across the globe, the band are hanging up their trumpets to embark on a new journey. Busting out the classics, from “The Wine Song” to “Hello” to “The Lost Song”, the crowd was pumped to capacity and the band delivered one of their best 61

performances to date, each song taking on a new meaning as they drew the curtain on their final set. Day one of a five-day program went off with a bang. Highlights throughout the rest of the weekend included The Waifs with their familiar soulful sound, Xavier Rudd joined on stage by the Slabb brothers from Bundjalung Nation and John Butler with an extended solo set and spoken word re-connecting a community of creatives. As the sun set on Easter Sunday, Crowded House took to the Crossroads stage and Jimmy Barnes rounded off the Mojo stage. Bouncing from stage to stage it was the smaller stages that grabbed our attention as we called it a night and walked back to the car. Melbourne Ska Orchestra had the crowd up and dancing, The Wailers belted out their iconic tunes with a peaceful undertone and Renée Geyer took us back to the 80’s with a familiar sound that convinced us all is well in the land of live music and festivals are back baby!
