THE FIRE LINE

U.A. Local 853 observes the objectives of U.A. Canada as outlined by their Constitution, whereby the protection of its members from unjust and injurious competition is paramount. We believe that the principal of unity is the key factor in elevating good work conditions, creating confidence, generating esteem and respect, and promoting harmony in the spirit of sincerity. We recognize the rights of both contractors and workers for fair compensation, which will in turn result in quality craftsmanship. For decades we have been fulfilling this objective and will continue to do so for decades to come.
Nick Smirnov, RSE, Director of Training
The training department has been hard at work for you and for our apprentices this year to deliver the training you have come to expect. A special part of that training that we look forward to every year are the various apprentice competitions that we participate in. It takes a determined and confident mind to apply for these events and, our apprentices who apply year after year do so knowing that they will be put to the test in more ways than they can expect. Every year we see apprentices that exceed our expectations. These apprentices couldn’t succeed without their drive and the mentorship of fitters on the road guiding them day to day. It is through the sharing of experience and the encouragement on the job to be better that these apprentices grow to be the great Journeypersons that we wish to see in our industry.
I hope that all our members are able to push our apprentices to be better, to be passionate, and to be confident in their abilities. To spur on the love of the trade and the sense of accomplishment we feel looking back on a job well done. These are the apprentices that we see applying for the competitions, participating in the competitions, winning the competitions. If you have an apprentice that you think is exceptional, if you are an apprentice who has the determination to test their skills, I encourage you to apply. Applications are typically sent out in January every year, please reach out to your training department for information and answers to any questions you may have.
Let’s continue to make 853 the standard for others to meet.
Nick Devine, RSE, Assistant Training Coordinator
Brothers and Sisters,
As we look forward to our fall upgrade course schedule, I would like to acknowledge and thank all those that attended our spring upgrade courses. While the success of upgrade training is in large part due to the participation of our members, we must also thank our dedicated team of instructors that continue to help us improve our industry by bringing their experience, expertise and passion to each course they deliver.
This past spring also saw the launch of the NJTAC mobile fire pump trainer which allowed us to deliver fire pump ITM training remotely. We would like to thank Local 401 in Kingston for allowing us the use of their facility and giving us the space to conduct this course. The success of this training was impressive, and we are hopeful that we can continue to offer more remote courses throughout the province with the NJTAC mobile trainers. With that in mind, please be sure to visit the training website and request the courses you would like to see offered in your area. This helps us to schedule training while ensuring we are meeting the demands of those interested.
Additionally, we would like to acknowledge all our apprentices that competed in the provincial competition for their determination and willingness to test their skills. This year apprentice competitor Brother Carl Naumann won the opportunity to compete at Skills Canada, the U.A. Canadian National Apprentice competition, and the U.A. International Apprentice competition. Brother Naumann represented Local 853 proudly, by demonstrating his high level of skill and craftsmanship through a series of increasingly difficult tasks. However, beyond just the hard work Brother Naumann put in to each project, he was also recognized as the apprentice who best exemplified the "Standard for Excellence" during the U.A. Canadian National Apprentice competition - making him one of the few apprentices to ever receive this award while also being top competitor in their craft. Please join us in congratulating Brother Naumann on his accomplishments!
Finally, we would like to encourage everyone to visit the National JTAC LMS for additional courses and available resources. With an ever-expanding catalogue, such as the new NFPA 25 2017 Update, NFPA 25 2020 Update, and PFAS in Foam-Water Fire Protection courses, these self-paced online courses offer a convenient way to stay up to date with code changes, manufacturers products, new technologies, and best practices within our industry. Additionally, certificates for all completed online or in-person courses can also be accessed through the NJTAC LMS. If you require any assistance with using this website, please do not hesitate to contact the training department.
Thank you again for your continued support of training at U.A. Local 853!

Each year Local 853 accepts applications from apprentices looking to participate in the local apprentice competition. We encourage all 3rd-4th year apprentices, wanting to test their skill and ability, to apply. While this may seem intimidating, it is a great opportunity to meet and work with other sprinkler fitter apprentices throughout the province. Competing allows you to learn not only from the challenges and tasks assigned, but from one another, as the experiences between competitors can be widely varied. Additionally, the Skills competitions are unique opportunities to promote the Sprinkler & Fire Protection Installer trade within Ontario and Canada. By participating in these events, you are not only an ambassador of the trade, but may be seen as a mentor by the young people in attendance that may be considering an apprenticeship and a career in the skilled trades. The apprentice competition schedule begins with a local/provincial competition, that in past years has been conducted at Skills Ontario. The winner of this competition will continue to participate at the Skills Canada event, as well as represent central Canada at the U.A. Canadian National Apprentice competition. The winner of the U.A. National competition will then advance to the U.A. International Apprentice contest, representing Canada (District 6). Local 853 has a proud history of past competitors that have succeeded in all levels of the apprentice competitions and have gone on to successful careers as journeypersons. We hope these alumni can all agree that the experience of participating in the apprentice competitions has had a positive impact on their careers in the trade.

2019
This year at the UA National Apprentice competition hosted by Local 56 in Halifax Nova Scotia, central Canada was represented by Local 853 apprentice Brother Carl Naumann. Brother Naumann showed poise and determination as he faced the challenges of the 4-day competition that tested his ability, skill and knowledge in sprinkler fitting. Apprentices in this competition were tasked with the installation of different system types and were required to complete the project using all available materials and resources while working under a strict time line. Careful planning, along with organization and patience were necessary to maintain a quality installation that would be completed on time; all apprentices performed very well. Even with the spirit of competition alive and well, the sprinkler fitter apprentices made sure to help one another as needed, which ensured all projects stayed on track - a great reminder of the brotherhood and sisterhood within the United Association. In addition to completing the sprinkler project, there was a rigging evaluation and written exam which would be used to determine a winner. In the end Brother Naumann came out on top, taking gold for the Sprinkler Fitter craft.
The win at the UA National competition, earned Brother Naumann an opportunity to represent Canada (District 6) at the UA International Apprentice contest in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is an incredible achievement to make it to this level of the competition. Brother Naumann competed with apprentices from the other 5 Districts in the United States as well as a competitor from Australia. This competition is the ultimate test of character as apprentices are taken from their comfort zone and tasked with a written exam, essay, interview and practical projects each more difficult than the next. Brother Naumann represented District 6 and Local 853 proudly and we commend him on his achievements at the highest level of competition.
As part of each U.A. Canadian National Apprentice competition, all competitors vote for the single competitor they believe to best exemplify the U.A. Standard for Excellence. This competitor leads by example throughout the competition, demonstrating the values that the U.A. holds in high regard and which continue to make the U.A. and its members leaders in the piping industry. This years recipient of the U.A. Standard for Excellence award was none other than Brother Carl Naumann - making him one of the few apprentices to ever receive this award while also being top competitor in their craft.
Local 853 is incredibly proud of this achievement and congratulates Brother Naumann on his exemplary leadership during this event.
In an effort to continue to make upgrade training accessible to our members across Ontario, Local 853 put out a call for journeypersons interested in training. We are pleased to announce that we were able to add Brother McLean, Brother Raymond, and Brother Seguin to our team. We look forward to the experience and expertise they will bring to our upgrade courses beginning this fall.
Shaun has been in the sprinkler & fire protection trade for 24 years. What intrigues him the most about the trade is the evolution of technology & products over the years, as well as the wide variety of environments where fire protection is required. Shaun has been in the service sector for most of his career where he also acquired some fire alarm experience. He has been exposed to numerous circumstances that have required him to think critically to remedy an issue or get the job done. As a mentor, Shaun is always willing to pass on what he has learned over the years to other fitters and apprentices. His advice is to work hard and put in an honest days work; this is what the contractor expects of us and what we should deliver as Local 853 members - who are the best of the best in the industry. Most importantly, Shaun is always curious to learn more and looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with his fellow brothers and sisters. "Keep yourself educated in the trade, it will pay off for you many times over."
Maxime has been in the sprinkler & fire protection trade for 12 years. What intrigues him most about the trade is the challenge of fire protection as there are so many different types of hazards, installing the best systems available for the protection of the building and it's occupants is rewarding. Maxime continues to enjoy and feel passionate about the sprinkler & fire protection trade. Throughout his time in the industry, he has always enjoyed mentoring apprentices, and seeing them learn and grow in the field. He appreciates meeting other fitters and continues to have a hunger to learn more about the industry. For Maxime, becoming an instructor feels like a step in the right direction and whether you are an apprentice or a licensed fitter, always jump at the chance to learn something new. His advice to other fitters and apprentices is, regardless if you succeed or not the first time, you still come out with more experience and knowledge than if you did not try at all.
Michael has been in the sprinkler & fire protection trade for 6 years. For Michael, the most intriguing part of the trade is the different work that is performed in the fire protection industry. The opportunity to work in install or service, from reading prints and hanging pipe, whether installing special application systems or performing fire pump repair, you can head to work and be tasked with doing something different every day. The responsibility associated with this variety of work brings ample opportunities to learn, but also a sense of accomplishment when you have proven competency with a multitude of tasks. Michael knew he wanted to get involved with the Local 853 training program as early as basic trade school. He feels there is always more to learn and has enjoyed delving into deeper detail on many subjects. On many job sites, Michael has observed that the sprinkler fitters generally work in smaller crews, which says to him that the more informed and knowledgeable we are, the more competent and strong we are as a trade.
The U.A. Local 853 Sprinkler & Fire Protection Trade Centre provided a 16 week pre-apprenticeship program again this year to assist participants interested in beginning an apprenticeship as a Sprinkler & Fire Protection Installer. The program is conducted in 2 blocks of training. The first 8-week block consists of in-class, hands-on training with an experienced journeyperson in a controlled classroom and shop environment. The second 8-week block consists of a paid work placement with one of our signatory contractors where the participant's knowledge and skills are applied and further developed. Local 853 had 11 participants successfully complete the course who are going on to start their apprenticeship with local 853. Thank you to the participants for dedicating their time to learning our trade and we wish you the best future in our industry.

Keep pace with emerging technologies
Local 853 is dedicated to ensuring we have the most well-trained workforce in the industry. We strive to keep pace with new and emerging technologies by updating our courses to reflect the latest standards while working with manufacturers, the Ontario, and National Sprinkler Industry JTAC to secure the latest equipment for upgrade training. Upgrade courses are open to all Journeypersons, while select courses are open to Apprentices. If you are an Apprentice interested in upgrade training, please see the course descriptions for the prerequisites of each course to ensure your eligibility before registering. The sprinkler upgrade course schedule can be found on pages 24-29. See page 30 for registration details.
Through the U.A. Local 853 Training website our members have the ability to request upgrade courses in their specific location. This makes it easier to schedule courses in areas across Ontario. We would like to encourage the use of this website function from our members to be able to provide courses of interest in areas where there is demand. With enough feedback, we can provide the best training and support for our members. Remote training allows for completion of a variety of courses, in a short time-frame closer to home. If you have a recommendation for a location to run a course which is not indicated via the training website, please contact the training department and we will make every effort to assist you.
Thanks to the National Sprinkler Industry JTAC, we have access to mobile equipment containers which can be shipped around the province to accommodate remote upgrade training for Journeypersons and Apprentices. This will allow us to run courses on fire pumps and special hazards systems with fully operational equipment in any location with access to power and water. We encourage you to contact the Local 853 Training Department to express your interest.
The National Sprinkler JTAC mobile Fire Pump trainer is a two sea-can set-up, where one sea-can is utilized as a storage tank for the fire pump's water supply. The fire pump equipment consists of an end suction pump, diesel driver, fuel tank, exhaust, and controller. Additional equipment is provided for testing and allows all water to be discharged back into the tank. This means we can recycle the majority of the water used for the training and have the ability to lock the tank at the end of the day preventing any unwanted access. The diesel driver, like in the field, allows for fire pump operation with minimal electrical concerns, as a small generator can be used to power the controller and allow for the batteries to charge.
Primarily, this equipment will be used to deliver the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Fire Pumps (Fire Pump 2) course, however, it may also be incorporated to supplement Introduction to Fire Pumps (Fire Pump 1) training while on site. As ITM of fire pumps is an incredibly important aspect of our trade, we are pleased to be able to offer this essential training remotely giving us the best opportunity to reach more of our membership across Ontario.
The National Sprinkler JTAC mobile Special Hazard systems trainer consists of a Victaulic Vortex®, CO2, FM-200, Novec 1230, dry chemical, and wet chemical system. Each system is equipped with an independent detection and release system. The single sea-can requires 120 volts for operation of the installed equipment. The Victaulic Vortex® system is arranged to be fully operational and can be discharged and refilled on-site. This equipment will be utilized to deliver courses based on all the suppression systems installed and introduce the participants to the use, operation, installation, and maintenance requirements of each.
As the fire protection industry continues to evolve and provide solutions for the protection of unique hazards, these systems play a vital role. These remote courses offer the opportunity to become more familiar with the non-water based systems that are in service across the province. The potential to offer six courses with this mobile trainer makes training efficient and provides flexibility as it can be tailored to suit the needs of your area and does not require that all courses be delivered.

The National Sprinkler Industry JTAC (NJTAC) is celebrating 50 years of supporting apprenticeship, journeyperson upgrade training and trade qualifications. To help celebrate this milestone, the NJTAC will be issuing a commemorative book referencing and highlighting the members, locals, jurisdictions, and events that have helped to shape our industry, and recognizes the historic roots of the sprinkler trade in Canada dating back to 1915. In continuing with the support of training within the industry, the NJTAC launched their LMS (Learning Management System) in October 2020. The LMS provides all members across Canada access to free online self-paced upgrade courses covering a variety of topics, as well as access to resources such as NFPA Codes and Standards. To date the NJTAC has issued close to 6000 training certificates through the LMS. See page 33 for a list of courses offered.
New courses are constantly in development to be used in person and on the National Sprinkler Industry JTAC LMS. There have been a few new courses added since the spring newsletter including NFPA 25 2017 Update, NFPA 25 2020 Update, and the PFAS in Foam-Water Fire Protection. We encourage our members to take advantage of this resource provided to all members to continue on the road of lifelong learning. Our combined knowledge is our strength and only by fostering the learning atmosphere can we ensure we continue to be the best trained in the industry.
