U.A. LOCAL 853 MISSION STATEMENT

U.A. Local 853 observes the objectives of U.A. Canada as outlined by their Constitution, whereby the protection of its members from unjust and injurious competition is paramount. We believe that the principal of unity is the key factor in elevating good work conditions, creating confidence, generating esteem and respect, and promoting harmony in the spirit of sincerity. We recognize the rights of both contractors and workers for fair compensation, which will in turn result in quality craftsmanship. For decades we have been fulfilling this objective, and will continue to do so for decades to come.

Issue 2023 I THE FIRE LINE
Fall

Nick Smirnov, RSE Director of Training

Brothers and Sisters,

As we move into the end of 2023 I am pleased to tell you that your Training Department is busy with apprenticeship training and bringing more upgrade courses to more locations. Local 853 was honored to host the U.A. Sprinkler Training Director meeting in May where our American Brothers attended the facility to discuss upcoming U.A. training, see how 853 handles Apprenticeship Training, and to see your beautiful new facility. We were also fortunate to see two 853 instructors teach at this year’s U.A. Instructor Training Program in Ann Arbor Michigan. Jason Thompson was chosen to teach new Special Hazard Systems and Nick Devine was selected to teach a Construction Technologies course. We are proud to see our members being asked to participate in leading these courses and have 853 be recognized at the international level. This year’s ITP also saw instructors Ben Prince, and Devon Ellis graduate from the program and receive their certificates. It takes a lot of commitment and dedication to complete this program and we ask that you join us in congratulating them on this great achievement.

The last thing I would like to ask of you is that our apprentices keep asking questions and pushing for involvement in all aspects of the job. That our journeypersons continue to mentor their apprentices and push them to do better. There is so much work already happening and so much more coming that we need to ensure these duties do not falter or be left by the wayside. We need to ensure our workers remain the best trained and can adapt to the changing landscape of our trade and others. Push to be better and embrace new technologies and ideas where possible. Today’s apprentice is tomorrow’s fitter and we want them to be as prepared as they can be for the future.

Fraternally, Nicholas Smirnov – Director of Training

Brothers and Sisters,

As summer comes to a close, we are looking forward to the release of our fall upgrade course schedule. Spring upgrade training was incredibly successful, and we would like to thank all those that attended. We would also like to thank the instructors that dedicated their time to preparing for and delivering these courses. Without their passion and commitment, it would not be possible to provide the quality of training that keeps our members among the most skilled in our industry.

The training department, with the help of the National Sprinkler JTAC and the Ontario JTAC, is continuing to put mobile equipment containers together to offer more of our upgrade courses across the province. Courses that previously could only be offered at the trade centre are soon to be available remotely, and we are very excited to have the ability to ship the required equipment and tools for training to any area where there is interest. If you would like to see upgrade training in your area , please contact the training department or visit the training website to make your request.

Additionally, please be sure to visit the National JTAC LMS for additional courses and available resources. With an ever-expanding catalogue, these self-paced online courses offer a convenient way to stay up to date with changes, manufacturers products, new technologies, and best practices within our industry.

Finally, the U.A. Local 853 Sprinkler & Fire Protection Trade Centre has always taken pride in staying current with advancing technologies in the industry. We have developed strong, longstanding partnerships with manufacturers to ensure we have access to the latest equipment, tools, and resources for training. However, current technology in the trades extends well beyond the equipment we install, as it also affects how we access and interact with our project information, drawings, and documentation. To prepare apprentices for today’s job sites, we have begun to incorporate more digital tools into our apprenticeship training. Throughout the various levels of training, apprentices are interacting with digital codes, manufacturer resources, inspection software, and construction management programs in their classrooms and shop classes. We believe it is important to expose our apprentices to these technologies and allow them an opportunity to develop the skills they need to use these as tools in the field.

Thank you for your continued support of training at U.A. Local 853!

U.A. INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM

In August, the Local 853 training department attended the annual United Association Instructor Training Program (ITP). This event brings U.A. instructors from across North America, as well as affiliates from Ireland and Australia to Washtenaw College in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

During this week-long program, instructors attend courses to learn how to be an effective trade instructor within the United Association, as well as courses specific to their trade. This education is invaluable to ensure we have trained and knowledgeable instructors to deliver training in both our apprenticeship and upgrade courses.

This year, Local 853 was proud to see two instructors graduate the five-year program. We would like to congratulate Brother Devon Ellis and Brother Ben Prince for their achievements and wish them continued success with the upgrade training they provide to our membership.
