More and more of us are living with dementia. I know how di cult this is because my father had it, as did two of my grandparents and all ve of dad’s siblings. There’ll be a knock on my door before too long……

The good news is that medical research is accelerating at pace. In the 10 years since I established Bluebird Care Lancaster, new pharmaceutical discoveries have been churning out and I am con dent we’ll be looking at really e ective drug therapies for dementia on the market within the next decade or so, if not sooner.

But where does that leave us in the meantime? People with current diagnoses won’t want to just sit in the chair and melt away.

I have lived and worked with people with dementia over many years. And I can say with certainty that it is possible to live well with dementia. Maybe not always, but often.

When someone develops dementia, there are tweaks and changes we can make to really help improve quality of life. One of my clients has just had to relinquish her driving licence and says, “I just want to nd ways to be as normal as I possibly can while I can and to enjoy the things I always have.” What do we do? We drive out to nice places, nd cafes which sell good cake, take walks and put the world to rights and maybe pick up a bit of shopping on the way home. She says that just a few hours a week makes all the di erence. And we take photos, which help prolong the feelgood memory. Works a treat.

Another client had a life passion of mountaineering. I like hiking too, so together we climbed our way round the Lake District peaks and Yorkshire dales, whilst his other half took some time to herself much-needed time to herself.

My dad lived with dementia for a decade and for the nal couple of years really struggled with word recall. His wonderful care home laid on a WWII Home Front themed day: sta dressed up; the place was decorated with lots to look at and lots to touch; and there was music. Imprinted forever on my heart is the joy on dad’s face as he belted out the full lyrics to “It’s a long way to Tipperary”. The music had triggered his brain to root out the words. And then we danced and laughed and danced together. That is the happiest and most loving I had ever seen him my whole life…..

These are just a few anecdotes. For more advice, the Alzheimers Society have published a great “Dementia Guide” which I would highly recommend.

MOVE IT, MOVE IT. Stay as active as you can and, more importantly, keep doing the things you enjoy doing. If you need it, seek help from family/ friends or local organisations, so you can continue. There really is a lot of extra support out there.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT as much as you can. We are told this throughout life as advice to living contentedly, yet we all seem to nd it so di cult. But having dementia can often make you something of an expert in this department, so max it out!

MUSIC, SONG and DANCE – possibly the best dementia drugs on the market at present

TOUCH – stroke a pet, cuddle a child, snuggle with a blanket, hugs galore

MAKE LIFE SIMPLE. Go easy on yourself: write things down in key places before you lose the memory; pick easy clothes to wear; use reminders – time, day, appointments locator devices, electronic medication reminder.

And nally…..

NEVER EVER BE HARD ON YOURSELF for the struggles you have and how this impacts your daily life. Living with dementia is di cult. But THERE IS NO SHAME. Awareness of dementia is sooooo much better these past 5 years: people understand now and they want to help.
