Welcome to the Lobero Theatre!

As I reflect on what our beautiful state has been through with the January fires in Los Angeles, and so many natural disasters and hardships over the past decade, I’m simultaneously reminded of the way artists and audiences have come together, often within just days, to help. Benefit concerts, online performances, musicians and actors lending their voices to causes, and art lovers responding with generosity.

When an earthquake leveled most of Santa Barbara 100 years ago, the Lobero Theatre became a makeshift shelter for those who lost their homes, and a staging area of emergency resources. It should be no surprise that we turn to the arts, both figuratively and literally, when times are hard. Music, theater, dance, and film have always helped us process difficult situations and heal. The artist and their audience join forces in this process, bringing light to the darkness. It’s a tradition as old as time.

I’m grateful to the performers who grace this stage, and I’m grateful to you for being a part of this symbiotic community. It is a true gift to be a part of this joyful industry, and to share so many inspiring and elevating moments with you. As my predecessor, David Asbell, often says, “If we’re not having fun, what are we doing here?”

So let’s take a deep breath, and have some fun. Please enjoy your time at the Lobero Theatre. I hope I’ll see you here often!

Warmly,

Board of Directors

Keeping the light of live performance burning bright.

For 151 years, through the leanest times and grandest evenings, the Ghostlight has cast a warm glow over our intimate stage. It’s a beacon for the muses of drama, dance, and music – a spark of brilliance to keep creative spirits company from curtain-down to curtain-up. The strong and steady support of the Lobero Ghostlight Society illuminates our behind-the-scenes efforts and – like the steadfast bulb at center stage – keeps our vibrant theater from ever going dark.

Cover Artist

Pedro De La Cruz

The Lobero Theatre is thrilled to welcome artist Pedro De La Cruz to our family of distinguished local painters who have contributed their unique artwork to the cover of BACKSTAGE. A self-taught artist born in Tijuana, Mexico, Pedro’s childhood was marked by poverty and adverse circumstances. There is a childlike innocence in his work which gives off a playful energy. Pedro’s process is tactile – he works fast and likes to paint using acrylics on canvas while ideas are still fresh in his mind.

De La Cruz’s biggest priorities in life are art, family, and community. Doing what he loves is a huge blessing to him. Being able to contribute to different organizations in society gives him a sense of purpose and is very rewarding. Pedro is preoccupied with the world around him and his mission is more about bringing joy to others versus what the piece looks like. When he works, it’s like improv – with no preconceived idea of the outcome – not knowing the next stroke but rather choosing in the moment which direction the painting will go.

When creating the cover of the Lobero BACKSTAGE’s 2025 Spring edition, he started with a realistic interpretation of the building, then distorted it, and let his imagination fill in the rest — adding performers so the viewers can “feel” the music, then nearby dwellings representing the importance of community. For Pedro, it’s all about bringing people together using vibrant colors, light, and good vibes. Even when simply using black and white, there is still an element of lightheartedness ... happiness. Pedro, who lives with his family in Santa Barbara and maintains a busy studio in the Funk Zone, is passionate about reaching out to help other artists, being present, and living in the moment.

Thank You for Joining Us in Celebration of 150+

Years of the Lobero

Theatre!

This year, on our official birthday — Lobero Give Day (2/22) — we are proud to honor one of the theater’s greatest leaders: our recently retired Executive Director, David Asbell.

While David continues to contribute as our invaluable Program Director, his remarkable 28 years as Executive Director were truly transformative. Under David’s leadership, the Lobero transitioned from a struggling playhouse in financial difficulty into the thriving, intimate concert venue it is today. He fostered strong partnerships with local arts organizations and collaborative Santa Barbara nonprofits, solidifying the Lobero’s place as a beloved cultural cornerstone.

In December, the Lobero Board and Staff came together to celebrate David’s incredible tenure by raising a ceremonial #28 Lobero jersey (a nod to his love for the Dodgers) to the theater rafters. This heartfelt moment was also the perfect opportunity to welcome the Lobero’s new Executive Director, Marianne Clark. Marianne, who served as David’s trusted right hand for many years, is the ideal successor to carry his legacy forward.

With gratitude, Brandon Mowery, Director of Development

To maximize your giving this Lobero Give Day, Lobero Luminary George Burtness has generously pledged to match up to $10,000 in honor of David’s nearly three decades of leadership. Please consider supporting the Lobero today to ensure a vibrant future for the theater. Please scan the QR code to donate directly.

Joshua James

Standing amidst the organized chaos of his workshop — part studio, part laboratory — Joshua James brings over a decade of experience as a multidisciplinary artist to his creative endeavors. For the past five years, he has worked in box office management at the historic Lobero Theatre, where his love of the performing arts inspires much of his work. Joshua’s career includes prop design for independent films, multiple productions with Broadway Sacramento, live concert set design for Kenny Loggins, and contract work in visual effects and virtual reality design.

From painting to playing multiple instruments to an expansive foray into 3D printing, Joshua’s workshop is a hub of creativity and experimentation. Drawing from his appreciation for science fiction, horror, and fantasy, Joshua’s work often explores themes

of wonder, otherworldly storytelling, and the boundaries of imagination. A notable recurring influence in his projects is theme parks — both as sources of inspiration and as a framework for creating immersive, experiential art.

In addition to his professional work, Joshua enjoys designing small novelties and inventions.

To check out more of his gizmos, doodads, and creations, visit corneliuscogscabinet.etsy.com or follow Joshua on Instagram @molecule_studios.

In honor of the Lobero Building’s Centennial, the artist created a unique custom ornament. To purchase this special keepsake or to inquire about other custom orders, please contact Joshua directly at 805.679.6019.

In Memoriam

Doug Wood

H. Doug Wood joined the LTF Board of Directors in late 2009, and by June 2010 he was our Board President. Doug brought a passion for theater to the position, but also an open mind and a desire to help the organization succeed in all areas. He was a founding member of our Ghostlight Society, and he and Linda could be counted on to greet guests to the Lobero with a warm welcome. His smile and his friendship will be missed.

Erin Grafy de Garcia

Erin was an accomplished author and historian who made notable contributions to Santa Barbara’s history through her articles in the Santa Barbara Historical Museum’s magazine, Las Noticias. She served as historian for Old Spanish Days and wrote the humorous series "How to Santa Barbara" for the Santa Barbara Independent. Her book, Old Spanish Days, won a regional nonfiction award, and she co-authored Animalia with artist Tom Mielko, earning a silver medal at the Benjamin Franklin Book Awards. Erin’s latest work was the "Talk of the Town" column for Noozhawk, where she shared her insights about Santa Barbara.

Gary Fruin

Santa Barbara radio legend Gary Fruin was known for his warmth and kindhearted spirit. He had an infectious laugh, a great sense of humor, and a genuine interest in people, basketball, and of course, music. His life was marked by adventure, travel, passion, and a deep connection to community. Gary’s career at K-Lite radio spanned over three decades, where he co-hosted The KLITE Morning Show with Catherine Remak. His voice became synonymous with the station, and his impact was felt by countless listeners over the course of 34 years. He was a loving husband, father & grandfather, a cherished friend to many, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Maribel Lesch Jarchow

Maribel was a devoted wife, mother, nana, aunt, sister, and friend. She and her husband Paul met in Chicago and eventually moved to Montecito to raise their three children. Maribel's life was marked by her deep devotion to the Catholic Church. She worked at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church for more than 40 years, cherished her role as a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, volunteered to support the community, was a board member of Catholic charities, and a dedicated member of The Lobero Associates for 25 years. Maribel will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
