Columbus students honor local vets Students at Freeport's Columbus Avenue School learned first hand why we celebrate Veteran's Day when they invited local veterans to their school for a special ceremony. The guest list included some familiar faces like their own Pre-K teacher John Schreiber, Archer Street School's assistant principal Kevin Bishop, and Spiro Colaitis, the Freeport Public Schools' director of facilities. Students met local veterans Pat Yngstrom and Frank Colon, and learned that the orange berets that they wore meant that they served in the Vietnam War. The children also met two World War II Navy veterans, Elizabeth Knolhoff, and William Miller, the father of their principal Peggy Miller. Members of the Freeport High School Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, under the direction of Marine Major Donald Moore, presented the colors, and FHS student Daniel Tetreault played "Taps." Earlier in the week, all the children had drawn Veterans Day pictures. At the ceremony Principal Peggy Miller gave each guest a drawing as a special keepsake. The rest of the students' drawings will be sent to patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Northport. As a special gift to the students, veterans Yngstrom and Colon brought American flags for each child to take home. "Although our students are only 4

and 5 years old, said Ms. Miller, "we want them to begin to understand why we celebrate Veterans Day, and why it is so important to honor the men' and women who fought in the past and are still fighting today to protect and preserve freedom around the world."
