Tectonic focus of DWS: Analysis/ transformation In this project you will continue to build a tectonic vocabulary as well as descriptive language by thinking about architectural design processes as synonymous to cinematic design process Scale The elements Door, Window, and Stair will be reconsidered after having completed the three exercises Pause, Transition, Ground/ Threshold to understand each element in a deeper way. You will begin to understand how the body relates to and interacts with the architectonic assemblage. Program/ Context Developing an understanding of Narrative you will be asked to think of yourself as “the director” of this spatial and structural composition. Thus you will have to generate the program for yourself. Materiality Materials are used or chosen as generator for joints and details in reaction to the construction of the programmatic narrative.
The initial spatial situation – the components
Topographical Surface “the critical threshold or transitional anchor” The topographic surface must inform a “primary threshold” or axis of entry. This will literally be generated from the exercise that you have just completed. Parameters: The topo can be a mass and/ or a surface, but either way it will be constructed out of a “honey comb” structure The topo may not exceed 12’ from the table surface
Three Spatial Moments These relate back to the “Pause” exercise and will stimulate the development of the narrative. We will require that this spaces act as a secondary space within a larger primary space yielded by and deviating from the “L.” Parameters: Each “Moment” must relate to the other two materially. Thus, you must be systematic or consistent with the materiality of the moments. Each Moment must be large enough for at least one person One Moment must be 9’x9’x9’ or smaller One Moment must create a Window
Constructed “L” The L will have scripted dimensions and material parameters that we will give you later in the project. Initial Parameters: The L cannot be positioned with either plane flat on the ground. The L must be set at 90 degrees to the table top A person can, but doesn’t always have to be inside the L. This means it can act like an occupied wall/ surface. The L should help you answer these initial questions when constructing your narrative. 1. What is outside within what you are making, and what is inside? 2. What are the spatial implications of arranging the stair in various ways in relation to the “L”?
