Interpretation part 1_ threshold Due on Friday at the beginning of class

[re]generative landscapes ‘Good’ design is often marked by the descriptive language that accompanies it. An architect is trained to translate the narrative of his design into a formal composition. This exercise will investigate the latent meaning of words by exploring the relationship of word-actions and action-spaces.

‘Twist’

‘Ripple’

‘Shear’

Construct 3 studies that investigate the language of action: Choose three words that describe an action/procedure such as (but not limited to): Fold, Pleat, Crease, Crumple, Wrinkle, Ripple, Bend, Shift, Push, Knot, Wrap, Weave, Score, Emboss, Shear, Compress, Press, Hinge, Rotate, Twist, Extrude, Entangle, Interlace, Loop, Thread, Flex, Pinch … Carefully tear three 12” x 12” sheets of foil. For each sheet you will select a single word. This is your word-action. You must manipulate the sheet of foil in a manner that best expresses your word of choice. During this process your foil may take on any shape or form, but each must remain a single, uncut sheet. It’s resultant form, as a process defined landscape, becomes your action-space. Using your black and white paint, spray your foil. Spray paint from opposite directions, making sure white and black each come from one direction. Your spray should be a fine mist, lightly and evenly covering the foil. (Spraying should be done outside with your back to any wind that might be. Rotate the foil rather than facing the direction of the wind to change direction. For best results, hold can at a low 30-45° angle, about 12” to the side of the foil) When dry, flatten your foil completely. To do this, turn it over (paint side down) and use a blunt object to smooth out any kinks, folds, creases, etc. Mount each foil on a separate 10” x 10” foam board, creasing and wrapping the edges to the back of the board. Materials: Roll of heavy duty aluminum foil Can of Matte Black spray paint Can of Matte White spray paint Can of Spray Mount Adhesive 3/16” Foam Board (one 20”x30” sheet will yield 6 pieces, enough for two students)
