FNJF Employment/Support Counsellor

DURATION:

Upon approval of application submitted to Human Resources Development Canada Full-time contractual. From October 1, 2013 to March 2015 (Possibility of a 2 year extension)

ANNUAL SALARY:

Commensurate with education and experience

DESCRIPTION Under the supervision of the LMDC Employment Counsellor the FNJF Employment/Support Counsellor will work with clients to refine and implement skills learned during the job readiness training, coordinate all aspects of the mentored work placements and provide support, guidance and monitoring during the work placements, to FNJF/ESD clients referred by the Income Assistance (IA) Assessment Counsellor. He/she will work to increase the pool of employer/sponsors for mentored work experience through relationship building by providing information on the skilled labour force, financial incentives, and most importantly, to provide information about cultural sensitivities. FNJF – First Nations Job Fund – A Human Resources and Skills Development Canada initiative to provide active measures activities for First Nations youth referred by the ESD service providers. ESD – Enhanced Service Delivery An Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada initiative aimed at increasing the service delivery capacity of First Nations Income Assistance providers in order to support youth Income Assistance clients to overcome current barriers to employability and increase their access to the labour market, through an improved service delivery. REQUIREMENTS  A College Diploma in Human Services or a related field;  Personal and/or professional experience with various clienteles: persons living with a disability, severe learning difficulties, psychosocial issues, problems with the law, etc.;  Effective teamwork abilities and ability to work independently;  Must be reliable and responsible;  Work experience is an asset  Knowledge of Mi’gmaq Language and Culture is an asset  Successfully pass a criminal background check COMPETENCIES, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE  Communication Skills o Communicate effectively, orally and in writing o Understands and follows direction o Strong, effective interpersonal communications skills in a multidisciplinary context;  Establish and maintain positive relationships       

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Establish or re-establish relationships with employers by developing and implementing a communication strategy, in conjunction with the communications contractor. Increase cultural awareness through the planning and implementation of an anti-racism campaign, which will include but not limited to cultural sensitivity training and role model campaigns.


Page 1 of 2 Coordinate and monitor mentored work placements  Review, enhance and implement job readiness skills including resume/cover letters, interview techniques, communication with employers, work ethics, etc.  Schedule interviews  Draft and review agreements for signature  Provide support and guidance during the work placements o Provide information and strategies for maintaining a job or moving within an organization, dealing with job dissatisfaction, and adjusting to workplace transitions o Conduct monitoring through on-site visits o Intervene to resolve problematic issues when necessary Records client progress and results in Aboriginal Labour Market Adaptation Support System (ALMASS) including up-date and maintenance of established Action Plans when necessary. Reports periodically to the IA Assessment Counsellor on the progress of IA Clients. May escort clients on Educational Excursions to colleges, universities and job fairs. Assists in the evaluation of FNJF/ESD programs and services and make recommend improvements and/or amendments. PRIORITY:
