Ms Slattery's Farewell Assembly

Thankyous yyStudents and staff who contributed to our school farewell to Ms Jane Slattery, Head Teacher English, another superhero of education who retired at the end of Term 1. Particular thanks to Ms Wilson who prepared the band to perform an Abba medley and Ms Flannery and the ukelele group for their Leaving on a Jetplane number, students who gave speeches and produced the film clip used at our farewell assembly. Term 1 Field Study Day Year 7 Egg Day Yr 7 Egg Day is an annual event organised by the Science Department, which is a fun filled day where students participate in a variety of Science experiments, with both an educational and egg based theme. The students enjoyed a fun learning experience with a range of activities such as Egg Blow, Egg Mobile, Daredevil Egg, Why Is It So? and Egg Volcano to name a few!! But the excitement did not stop there, with the students having loads of fun racing each other in a three-legged egg & spoon race, as well as an Egg Catch challenge and an Easter egg hunt to end the day on a 'sugar high'. Students were also encouraged to enter an Egg Decorating Competition, with some amazing efforts made by all students. Prizes were given to all entrants. Overall it was an EGGstremely EGGciting and EGGcellent day that was had by all. – Miss Yssmin for the Science Faculty
Year 8 Aquarium Rich Day for Visual Arts From creepy crawlies to cuddly koalas and colourful clownfish, creatures of every kind were on view for the Year 8 Field Day at the Aquarium and Wild Life Zoo. Students crowded around to watch brilliantly coloured butterflies settle on trees, whipped out their pencils and drew waddling penguins, and chattered in nervous excitement as they stood near to a terrifyingly long crocodile. The dugongs and turtles drew much discussion, and by the end of the day, worksheets were filled, phones were full of photos and Year 8 were exhausted. Term 1 Field Study Day Year 9 Mini Young Change Agents During Field Study Day in Term 1, Year 9 took part in a mini-Young Change Agents Social Entrepreneurs Workshop. Students spent the day developing and refining a social enterprise using design-thinking processes which included: Road Safety Apps, social safety and community events apps, Charity Balls, Environmental Sustainability initiatives and Food Recycling programs. The aim of the program is to support students in developing critical and transferable skills which are being demanded of employees today, while focussing on addressing significant social issues. Overall, the program demonstrated that Year 9 students at CGHS are devoted and passionate about making positive change in the world. This program built on a pilot program from 2017 and we look forward to expanding this further as part of the school’s Futures Learning Strategy. Three teams on the day stood out: Team Name

These teams will be participating in a combined day with Ashfield Boys High School later in the year and working further to develop their ideas. This day would not have been possible without the support of Mr. Fitzgerald, Ms. Fountas, Ms. Jenkins, Mr. Pearson and Ms. Vlachos – who devoted their time to supporting students develop their enterprise ideas with an authentic experience and demonstrated to how a simple idea, and a simple desire can actually make a positive change in the world! – Ms Dervenis-Loupos, Head Teacher, Teaching & Learning

Term 1 Field Study Day Year 10 Great Race On the 22nd of March, Year 10 participated in a series of team building challenges through the Great Race program. Before the program we began with creating a team banner with our group name. Our team in particular (Super Hero theme) really enjoyed designing a banner with superhero characters with paints. At Canterbury Public school, there were various fun activities that required aspects from all personalities in our groups; such as trivia questions, word puzzles, and constructing a tower out of tin foil. At the end of the day points were added up and our team won a box of TimTams and 'Great Race' medals. The team 'Bow Chicka Wow Wow' displayed a wonderful group chant later in the day that beat everyone else's. Overall, the day was an incredibly fun and useful learning experience. mma D Gallagher, Emma-Cate Lymn, Hannah E Veitch(Year 10)
French New Caledonia trip On the 20th of April Ms Mavris, Ms Magoffin and 12 French students from Years 9, 11 and 12 embarked on an overseas adventure to the tropical Nouvelle Calédonie. We departed Sydney for a 7-nights trip to enhance our experience learning the French language and engaging with local culture. We attended three 3-hour lessons at L’École de langues which helped expand our vocabulary and improve our pronunciation. Lots of new words and phrases were learnt. However, much of our practice came from engaging with locals when ordering food at restaurants and buying things at the local markets and shopping centre. In between our lessons we explored the city of Nouméa. We had a sightseeing tour around the city on our first day in the Tchou Tchou train where we travelled along the beautiful bays and into the hustle and bustle of the city. Immersed in Melanesian culture, we visited the Tjibaou Cultural Centre which enriched our

understanding of the traditions and values of the Kanak people. The busy days were concluded with a relaxing dip in the hotel pool and dinners at local restaurants. Although we did visit a local Chocolatier, which was delicious, I believe the highlight of the trip was the day spent at Amédée Lighthouse Island. It was a day filled with swimming, snorkelling with the turtles, dancing and climbing to the top of the lighthouse; the view was breathtaking. We were all sad to say good bye to New Caledonia and definitely didn’t want to return back home to face the reality of school, assessment tasks and exams! It was an amazing trip and we all had an amazing time! Thank you to Ms Mavris and Ms Magoffin for taking us on what was an awesome educational experience. Ariana Costas

Sport Cross Country Carnival Congratulations to all students who ran in this year’s cross country carnival at Peace Park. It was a warm afternoon and the water sprays, icy cloths and icy treats helped cool everyone down. Here are the results – it was close! The Zone Cross Country Carnival was held at Scarborough Park on Tuesday 22nd May. Full results will be in our next newsletter.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2018- INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS Carnival Details: ● The athletics carnival will be held on Thursday May 31st at Campbell Oval. Students need to make their own way to and from the venue. ● Attendance is compulsory for all students, participation is expected. ● Should the carnival be postponed due to inclement weather, a text message will be sent to families at 7:30am. ● Any students who have medical conditions or special needs ONLY need to return the slip below to the PDHPE staffroom. ● The theme of the day ‘Age of the Internet’ On the day: ● The cost of the carnival is included in the sport levy that all students should have paid. Any student who has not yet paid this levy needs to do so as soon as possible. ● Rolls will be marked at 8:40am and again at the conclusion of the carnival at approximately 2:45pm. ● You must remain in your House areas when not involved in an event. The Houses are Adelaide (blue), Brisbane (yellow), Canberra (green), Darwin (red). ● Bring something warm to wear, a hat, sunscreen and water. ● Parents are welcome to attend. ● A full program of events will be available on the day and will be on display outside the PDHPE staffroom next week. ● Year 12 will be selling food on the day; there are no other canteen facilities. About the Zone Carnival: ● Girls who place 1st or 2nd overall in a final event will represent the school at the Zone carnival held on 2nd and 3rd July. ● 3rd place may also attend this in some events or as a reserve. ● Permission notes will be distributed at school in the following week and need to be returned to Mrs. Moliterno in the PDHPE staffroom. Year 12 CAFS - Parenting and Caring. Facing the challenges of parenting and caring with Talking Realities presenters from Karitane On Monday the 7 May, Year 12 Hospitality students attended a Career Expo at the exclusive Sofitel Sydney Wentworth Hotel in Phillip street in the CBD. The students attended various workshops to broaden their understanding of the Hotel industry and the opportunities available to them. The workshop provided an understanding on how to ‘Break into the career opportunities in the hotel industry', ‘Position themselves for the future’, provided guidelines on how to ‘Interview for Success’ and view the ladder that General Managers climb in a workshop called ‘A General Manager’s Perspective' . 14

Throughout the expo students were able to enter variouss competitions from hotel stays, to free coffee or skills workshops. One of the favourites was the ‘Taste Testing Competition’ – where you had to taste test a canapé and determine the 4 major ingredients. Fingers crossed we win that one! The students enjoyed listening to the various presenters as they spoke with enthusiasm and presented the different departments in the Hotel Industry and future job prospects for our students. On the 20th of March the students of 8MJ journeyed to Macquarie University for a STEM conference. The aim was to collect ideas for the project our class is going to complete with Ashfield Boys. We heard multiple talks which were all fascinating and engaging. The talks were on building empathy, the future of work, cyber security and artificial intelligence. There was also a panel discussion. It was a great experience and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We would like to thank Mrs Kaur and Mr Jurd for escorting us to the event and making it possible. By Mae Mitsak and Samantha Walker 8MJ

Already 2018 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Dance at CGHS. The year began with the establishment of three strong performance groups - a Year 7 dance ensemble and a junior and senior dance company. Every Tuesday morning at 7.30am, 30 plus Year 7 students, and some very committed Year 8 mentors, arrive at the Cantabrian Hall for a dance technique class. During this term, this enthusiastic group will have the opportunity to reveal their creative talent in the area of choreography as they work in groups to generate movement for a dance piece to be performed at our Dance Showcase Evenings (19th and 20th September).

CHGS • FACULTY NEWS • performance of ‘Colourblind’ at the opening ceremony. In the same week, the students performed at Dulwich Hill Primary School for their special Harmony Day assembly. This term both dance companies are currently rehearsing their new pieces for the Ultimo Dance Festival Series which is held every year at the Seymour Centre. The senior company will be performing their collaborative choreography “Hazy Shade of Change” on Wednesday evening (20th June) and the junior company will perform “My Guitar” on Wednesday, 27th June. The workshops are also open to singers where Jacki Cooper will be workshopping pieces and vocal techniques. So if you play an instrument and sing make sure you get a permission note in! We conclude the week with Winterfest, held for the school. This will showcase students in music ensembles and elective music students. If you miss that performance we will hold Winterfest for a second time in Term 3 Week 1 Thursday 26th of July so no one misses out! – Ms Wilson

Most recently, 33 dance ensemble and dance elective students from years 7 to 11 attended dance workshops at Sydney Dance Company Studios. The tutors were amazing, offering really challenging work for the students who enjoyed themselves immensely. The group will be returning next week for a creative workshop and a matinee performance of the Company’s latest work “ab (Intra)”. – Ms Reed
Music News After a busy first term we look forward to musical events in Term 2, with students already composing original songs for the Kool Skools Project. Kools Skools provides the opportunity for students to record their original songs in a professional recording studio; last year we were lucky enough to be called the Koolest Skool and now you can see the framed award in the music corridor. On the 15th and 29th of June there will be a Drumline workshop where a tutor will come in and give lessons to the percussion ensemble on the marching drums, in the near future you will be able to see them marching the grounds of the school! The newly coined Musicfest will take place on the last three days of term. We kick off Music fest on Wednesday the 4th July, watching Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical at the Capitol Theatre. Following it up on the Thursday with Make it Swing Workshops, these involve students from the band
Congratulations to CGHS’s Intermediate Theatresports Team on their outstanding and energetic participation in the Theatresports Challenge 2018. CGHS hosted the Intermediate round of this year’s Challenge and our team showed flair and originality as they made their first venture into the world of Theatresports. The team consisted of Viola Turcsanyi, Saskia Faniis, Edie Harris, Jessica Holt, Stefani Pavlovic and Emily Earp all from Year nine. Students participated in the Theatresports workshop and competition.

• FACULTY NEWS • CGHS Their performances illustrated their growing understanding of the skills and techniques involved in improvisation as they brought the audience to delight and laughter. The evening’s entertainment was enriched by their ready humour and clear ability to support each member of the team. We look forward to seeing their progression in further competition. Year 11 Drama and members of the Senior Drama Ensemble were privileged to be included in the Belvoir Theatre Company’s School Enrichment Program this year. This program gave students the chance to attend a complimentary school’s performance of The Sugar House, the most recent work from playwright Alan Valentine. We were delighted to welcome Jane May from Belvoir to the school to run a workshop exploring the play. Students got an introduction to design, directing and the collaborative creative process. There is much anticipation as this was a precursor to attending a performance at the theatre. Special thanks to Jane May and Belvoir Street Theatre for the intensive workshop and the complimentary tickets. – Ms Barry

This will reduce the number of e-mails sent and ensure the most up to date info and opportunities are promoted in a more interactive way. All you have to do is scan the QR code (left). Any feedback is welcome. This is also available on the course Moodle page and posters will also be displayed in the Learning Centre/ Library.
Year 12 Careers Notices Welcome back for the term! 1. T he Personal Best Program continues this term. The first half of the term is dedicated to Mindfulness sessions as well as updating study timetables. The timetable for the Mindfulness sessions can be found on the PB Moodle page. Mindfulness sessions are held in the Learning Hub, please be prompt to ensure the full session can be run. Your teacher will mark your name at the end of the session. 2. T he Careers team have been feverishly putting together a Careers calendar for you with all of the important dates sent to us from the Universities and other post-school options. The link to this calendar is at the very top of the Careers Moodle page (in red). This is where you will find we disseminate most information and important dates. Please take a look as there is more than likely going to be many events
you are interested in attending as you start to think about, and make decisions for when you leave us. A final note for those considering University as an option for next or future years – University Open Days and Information Evenings are starting to occur and are one of the best ways to get a feel of the campus and the faculty you are considering studying under, as well as being able to ask so many of the questions that you have. All Universities run slightly differently and each faculty within that University will have its own approach to learning and research. Start doing your research and attending Open Days now as you will find that next term will become very busy for you and this may be the only chance you have to attend these events.
UNSW Engineering Open Day for Year 10 and 11 students On Tuesday 16th of May, University of New South Wales (UNSW) held an Engineering Open Day. A small group of students from Year 10 and 11 attended the Open Day. We were given a broad understanding all the engineering courses offered as well as the course work they complete in their first year. Students from a variety of schools came and were all split into small groups as well as the opportunity to experience three of the courses offered hands on. The three courses I was put in with my fellow Year 11, Juliana Sikes, were Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications as well as Biomedical engineering. In Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, we were put into even smaller groups to create a device that could propel cargo from one place to the other using only elastics, paper cups, blu-tack, sticky tape and straws. We needed to be able to hold a small handball in it for five seconds before slinging it to the target. Although we did fail, quite hilariously might I add, first year students were given this same task and were able to produce similar contraptions to ours. After a small morning tea, we moved onto Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications. We were shown two of the student groups one of which specialise in satellite and drone work. We were given the opportunity to play with mobile app controlled Segway as well a ride on an actual Segway. We were given a tour of their labs and discussed UNSW’s recent satellite in orbit. Last of all, Biomedical engineering. In this we participated in an escape room, we were told a harmful toxin would release and we had 50 minutes to solve the multiple riddles and close passages as well as decode locks and figure out codes to end the escape room. We finished in a record time of 30 minutes. The main reason for the escape room was to convey the amount of problem solving engineers have to do every day. The Engineering day was so much fun. It really did give me an insight of all the different types of engineering course and has peaked my interest in engineering. Sumayra Shamim, Year 11

The school is more than happy for students to pay overnight excursions off across the year as long as a $50 deposit is paid prior to departure. One day excursions must be paid in full before departure. All families will receive an SMS when the newsletter is available on the webpage. This comes out each month and issue dates are on the calendar on the website. The newsletter is emailed to all students as well. If you wish to have a hard copy your daughter must collect this from Office A.
