After 15 years as the most wonderful General Assistant a school could ask for at CGHS, Mr Ralph has taken up a part time position much closer to home as he transitions out of work and into retirement and grandparent duties. So many projects around the school grounds and in our buildings are due to Dave’s skill and hard work over the years. The canteen upgrade and the Rusty Cott Pavilion are but two recent examples. We thank him for his dedication, good will and cheer at all times, and wish him well. All of Office A and our School Administration and Support staff will miss him especially. Dave was farewelled with the traditional staff morning tea and Yr 12 gathered in the afternoon to clap him off as he made the final trip down the back carpark drive in Period 4. From the Deputy Principal's Desk

Inner West Digital Literacies Community of Schools

If any parent or carer would like to raise any issues in relation to Aboriginal education at the school, please contact Mr Nolan or myself.

Canterbury Girls is one of three high schools in NSW to successfully gain one of the Australian Government’s Digital Literacy School Grants for 2017. This grant has enabled a project involving, firstly, Canterbury Girls working with Ashfield Boys’ High School to integrate Digital Literacies into joint Year 9 Science, Mathematics, Technology and Creative and Performing Arts curriculum through Project Based Learning. Staff undertook curriculum planning in Term One and then during Term 2, targeted Year 9 students participated in planning days with Ashfield Boys students where they designed rave gloves using led lights and then undertook a dance performance using the gloves they designed. In Term 4 last year, Year 9 students involved in Term 2 initiative served as ICT leaders on a Rich Task Day held on November 14 with Year 4 female students from Canterbury, Canterbury South, Campsie and Ashbury Public Schools.

Assessment

This year, students from 8A attended Sydney University’s Girls and Women in Science Forum at the Westmead Campus on 8 February, and two staff professional learning sessions for our Community of Schools have been scheduled with Amanda Hogan, ICT Educators NSW, on 26 February and 26 March. Tim Payne, a Year 8 parent, and Director, Higher Education Policy and Projects at Sydney University, who has been supporting our Community of Schools will be presenting at Mixed Berry Fest on “the future of work: what’s coming and how to prepare for it”, and I would encourage as many people as possible to attend Tim’s presentation.

Parent meeting for years 7, 10 and 11 were held on Tuesday 13 February to go through assessment requirements for 2018. A copy of assessment materials issued and Scope and Sequence for all years are available on the school website under Curriculum. https://web3.canterburg-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/ Curriculum%20-%20Subjects%20Offered.html I would strongly encourage all parents and carers to download these in order to monitor their daughter’s learning. If you have any enquiries relating to Curriculum, Assessment or Reporting, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone on 9718 1805 or email, andrew.anderson@det.nsw.edu.au.

A “how-to” fact sheet is included with this edition of the newsletter (See pages 18 & 19). If you would like any help with online payments, please feel free to contact me on 9718 1805 extn 106, where I will be only too happy to talk you through the process, or if you happen to be about, call in, and I will give you a demonstration.

Road Safety around the school SAFETY COMES FIRST at school drop off & pick up PARK SAFELY & WALK is best practice 1. Observe the 40km speed limit. 2. Park legally to avoid fines and danger to children. 363 Solar panels were installed across the Summer break, with final cutover for the system to happen next week. This will save the budget a significant percentage on our power bills and goes a huge way to make our site more sustainable. A SOLAR ANALYTICS monitoring system is being installed as well and as soon as operational we will link it on the website so you can see how much energy is being harnessed by our panels. Our next challenge in the drive for a sustainable school is to apply for a lighting upgrade to LED lights across the site. For those very generous families who adopted a solar panel we will have a new version of where your panel is located on the school website sometime this term

Online Payments Dear Families, Many families have been asking when we will be issuing statements of account. We generally aim to issue statements twice per term, and starting this year, we will be moving over to School Bytes, a company that some of you, it seems, are already familiar with, whereby we will now be able to email statements. Each statement will contain a link to Westpac online payments, and, whereas up until now, parents have had to manually input what they would like to pay for, your daughter’s invoiced items will now be automatically populated to the online payments screen where you can choose to pay in full, or in part. The exception to this will be sundry items, such as calculators, or activities where the numbers are capped, e.g. first 30 students to pay can participate. The feedback from other schools already on this new statement/payment system suggests that it will “revolutionise” the payment of student accounts as we now know them. Other than online, payments can also be made at Office C, via cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card.

3. Turning in a school zone is dangerous AND Double parking in a school zone is dangerous. Please do not do so in front of the school gates, particularly on the other side of the road, and then call your child(ren) to cross over to you. 4. Double parking in a school zone is also dangerous when your children walk out between cars to reach your vehicle and put their bags in your boot. 5. Your children should get in from the kerb side. 6. The vehicle should not be moving when children open the door to get in or out. Astonishingly senior executive supervising on Church St have seen far too many instances of the dangerous examples mentioned above on Church St in front of the school. Not only can you be fined for many, each is an example of a potential tragedy if something goes wrong. Thank you to parents who park and walk to the school gate to safely pick up their child(ren). Students have been instructed to use the crossing in front of the primary school or to walk to the roundabout at princess st to cross over Church St – crossing Church Street in the bus zone and 5 minute parking zone is dangerous, especially in the afternoons. See page 20 for details on applicable fines.

Year 12 2018 late start & early finish times have begun Students in Yr 12 may be eligible or can apply to start late and finish early when their Learning Centre periods allow. Families will be texted when a student confirms flexible timetable arrangements. yyDoes not apply to students who have LC Mon p5, Thurs - Fri p4 – students may depart at these times automatically. yyAll other times must be confirmed with Deputy, and students are to sign in/out on arrival/departure at Office A. Women and Girls in Science at Sydney University

Helping change the gender bias WESTMEAD

On February 9th 16 girls went to Westmead to participate in Sydney Uni’s Women and Girls in Science event. We travelled by train with Mr Anderson and were warmly welcomed by the staff. We then participated in a conference with a panel. The panel were made up of 5 amazing women and one man who have achieved outstanding things in science. The host was Sophie Scott who is the national medical reporter for the ABC. The stories of these people’s lives were really inspiring and showed that even though there is a stereotype that men are more prominent in STEM subjects, women can achieve the same if not more. We then got a tour of the lab by one of the speakers. She is an engineer at Sydney Uni and showed us what she does. We found that she makes devices for children with 3D printers. She showed us an amazing advancement in broken bones and new braces for children with ankles. While we were there for a bit of fun they were 3D printing a Harry Potter wand. All in all this was a fascinating event and we were all so lucky to be a part of it. We would like to thank Mr Anderson for escorting us there and back and to Tim Payne a parent, who got us our tickets and tour. Samantha Walker 8A

Mentoring youngsters

Stacy Thomas LEADING women in science spent the day inspiring high school students in a hope of ending gender bias. Canterbury Girls High School students gathered at Westmead Medical Research Institute to hear from a panel of high-profile Sydney scientists about their achievements and the challenges women face in the industry. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Clinical School Dean Louise Baur was mistaken for every role but a doctor in the first 20 years of her career. She said they lost well trained and talented people when women weren’t encouraged to combine a family and their scientific careers. “These areas are made for men and women. The barriers are only social,” Prof Baur said. Children’s Medical Research Institute’s Hilda Pickett gave birth to her daughter on her last day at work and returned seven weeks later because she was

worried about not progressing her research enough to obtain government funding in the next grant round. “Taking time out can have a real impact. It’s a big consideration and I’ve noticed it substantially,” Assoc Prof Pickett said. The University of Sydneyorganised event included Prof Heiko Spallek, who said change needed to start at the top. She said only 32 per cent of high-level professors and academics were women. “Given past discrimination of women in science and the still-prevailing gender stereotypes, we need to do everything to nurture female academics,” she said. The Sydney Women’s Mentoring Program and the Strategic Promotion Advice and Mentoring Program are some programs redressing the gender gap at mid and senior level academics. “I would like to see my daughters growing up in a society that recognises the achievements of individuals regardless of their gender, race or ethnic background,” Prof Spallek said.

Sports Reporting 2018

Futures Learning

WHAT IS PHYSICAL LITERACY? Physical Literacy is defined as “the motivation, confidence, physical competence, understanding and knowledge to maintain physical activity at an individually appropriate level, throughout life” (Whitehead, 2006). WHAT IS HAPPENING? Continuing in 2018, your child will receive a report based on Sport. This will summarise how your child has been progressing throughout their given Sport on Wednesdays. Your child’s Sport teacher will monitor each student’s skills, abilities and achievements throughout the season and report on this at the end of the semester. Each fortnight, there will be a ‘Fortnightly Focus’ to help guide students to achieve the outcomes for Sport. This will be announced at assembly as well as posted on the Sport Noticeboard for students to work towards. Teachers will follow the guidelines of the Physical Literacy continuum; a Department of Education document that identifies the knowledge, understandings, skills and attitudes regarded as critical to success and lifelong involvement in physical activity. It maps how critical aspects develop through the years of schooling by describing key markers of expected student achievement. It is informed by international and Australian studies, reports and research. Sport season

Motivation and Behavioural Skills

During Sport, your child will be expected to attend regularly and engage with organised Sport, including willingness to participate, demonstrating effort and bringing the correct equipment.

Teaching in our new futures focused classroom space in B7 shows Year 9 PDHPE starting a Project Based Learning unit designed by Ms Naisbett and Ms Conroy, where community guest speakers from Youth Off The Streets have been invited to ‘hook’ student engagement by linking learning to real world issues of relevance to adolescents. Keep watching Twitter and future editions of the newsletter for more details of how our B7 space is being used to teach collaboratively in ways which promote the development of 21st century skills.

Library Refurbishment With a reconfiguration of space in the library we are upgrading this facility in stages to be an even more outstanding hub of learning, resources and support services to enhance student achievement and engagement at Canterbury Girls.

For further information on the Physical Literacy Continuum follow this link: https://education. nsw.gov.au/curriculum/pdhpe/physical-literacy Any questions, please contact Mrs. Jamie Moliterno, relieving Head Teacher PDHPE on 9718 1805.

Yr 12 drama off to ONSTAGE

Year 7 PDHPE 7A students created board games from content learnt in theory lessons on First Aid, Water, Sport, Road & Fire Safety for their final unit. This board was created by Zoe, Polly & Savannah in 7A.

Ms Barry with Year 12 drama students

Yr 9 Art elective In Year 9 Art elective last year, we were studying geometrical figures. Our task was to study a human body position and make it into a sculpture out of Balsa wood. Balsa wood is an extremely light-weight and soft wood which is easy to manipulate and cut. The first thing we had to do was to sketch the design of our sculpture using straight-sided geometrical shapes. Once we were sure of the design, we used cardboard to create a 3D model of the sculpture which we could use as a reference when we cut out the Balsa wood. Finally, we pieced together the different parts of Balsa wood and glued each shape together with hot glue, joining the whole sculpture together. This project took a long time to complete and perfect but it was worth it because we could take the sculpture home at the end. It was a challenge to create a 3D object from the ideas in our sketches but it was extremely fun and interesting to see it come together.

VET - Hospitality News

Ensembles have commenced, gigs have been booked and the dulcet tones of music students practicing can be heard through the corridors. Senior students have had the chance to attend Encore, a concert that showcases outstanding performers and composers who have achieved the highest results in music in the HSC, on the 19th of February. It is important for our students to see and hear excellence in performance skills and practice in order to reach their potential in music.

Year 12 Hospitality class finished their final work placement week for their Kitchen operations Certificate, completing their 70 hours mandatory requirements. They enjoyed working in some exclusive restaurants throughout Sydney. Learning new skills and extending them in working as a team member in new environments. Well done. Maria Stephenson VET – HOSPITALITY TEACHER

The Inner West Council has invited the percussion ensemble and elective music students to perform as part of International Women’s Day at Petersham town hall on Thursday 8th of March. Another upcoming event is The Arts Unit 2018 Diverse Drumming initiative hosted at CGHS. This workshops educate students on many of the techniques and forms of West African music on April 3rd. In the rich tradition of attending live theatre at Canterbury Girls, the next production that we will be seeing is Priscilla Queen of the Desert on Wednesday 4th of July at the Capitol Theatre. This is a great opportunity to experience live theatre, this excursion is open to all students and relatives. We are planning a day of workshops for the concert band and singers led by two industry professionals, John Morrison and Jacki Cooper, Make it Swing. They will be working with the band on various aspects of playing, dynamics, style, groove and rehearsing specific repertoire. Jacki will be taking the elective music singers and choirs in groups workshopping pieces, vocal technique, scatting and teaching new charts. Stay tuned in for photos in the next edition of the newsletter!

Year 7 2018 Orientation Day 2017

HSC Preparation Program Students in Year 12 are well underway in their preparation for the HSC 2018. A number of assessments have already taken place in Term 1. This preparation program is now operating for a second year providing specific HSC study support in the Library Learning Centre all day every Wednesday and Thursday. All students in Year 12 are encouraged to work closely with Mrs McLelland, an experienced Head Teacher of English and History and HSC English examiner. Every Wednesday afternoon, a special seminar is being held on aspects of the HSC English course, often with a focus on Creative Writing. This is a strand which is examined in ESL, Standard and Advanced courses in English. While this program provides a strengthening of skills and achievement it also enhances student confidence and reduces stress and anxiety associated with the challenges of the HSC. If you require more information about this program, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
