Inner West Digital Literacies Community of Schools Canterbury Girls is one of three high schools in NSW to successfully gain one of the Australian Government’s Digital Literacy School Grants for 2017. This grant has enabled a project involving, firstly, Canterbury Girls working with Ashfield Boys’ High School to integrate Digital Literacies into joint Year 9 Science, Mathematics, Technology and Creative and Performing Arts Curriculum through Project Based Learning. Staff undertook curriculum planning in Term One and then during Term 2, targeted Year 9 students designed rave gloves using led lights and then undertook a dance performance. Year 9 students involved in the Digital Literacies curriculum will act as leaders on a Rich Task Day to be held on November 14. On this day, Year 4 female students from Canterbury, Canterbury South, Campsie and Ashbury Public Schools will undertake a Rich Task over the course of a day in sessions with the student leaders. On 31st October, Professor James Curran from Sydney University is presenting a workshop to staff from Canterbury Girls, Ashfield Boys, Canterbury Pubic, Canterbury South Public, Campsie Public and Campsie Public Schools on Digital Literacies to support teacher engagement in this curriculum area. I would like to thank Ms Andrews, Ms Delmas, Ms Di Chiara, Ms Yen, Ms Burgess, Ms Jenkins and Ms Venkatesan for their efforts in supporting this important project. White Ribbon The White Ribbon program was completed in Term 2 and resulted in Year 9 mentors supporting Year 7 students to achieve their Respect Passport. On Thursday, November 23, members of the Student Representative Council will join with students from other schools in the area to celebrate the day in an event organised by Ashfield Council.

25 November is White Ribbon Day. Further information about this day can be accessed at: https://www.whiteribbon.org.au/ We usually recognise the event at School with the dissemination of white ribbons to Years 7 and 9 students, SRC and staff, and a student led cake stall to raise money for a local women’s refuge.
Subject Selection I would like to congratulate Years 7, 8 and 10 for the positive way they engaged with Subject Selection this year. Year 7 have chosen one subject, Year 8 two subjects, and Year 10 English and an additional five subjects for study in 2018. The School’s timetabling team have worked very hard to make sure as many students’ first subject choices as possible were met. It is unfortunately impossible to enable all students’ choices to be given, especially in Stage 6. Students will have until the end of Week 3, Term One 2018 to make any changes to elective subjects. The ability to change subjects, however, will be determined by the other subjects available on the line the student wishes to change a subject in, and the number of vacancies within subject classes. Please contact me if there are any issues around subject selection; I strongly suggest that any issues be resolved at the earliest opportunity possible.
Reports Yearly reports will be issued for Years 7, 8, 9 & 10 at the end of Term 4, and to Year 11 midway through the term. Parents and carers should contact me if they have any issues or concerns regarding their daughters’ reports.
Indigenous Education Mrs McLelland and Mr Nolan are conducting surveys with Aboriginal students and parents to identify supports that worked well in 2017 as well as any additional supports that need to be provided in 2018. Mrs McLelland and Mr Nolan will be following this up with a meeting with individual students and carers to reviews this year’s Personal Learning plan and to update it for 2018. In addition, Mrs McLelland continues to work Tuesdays in Week A to support our Aboriginal students.
Personal Best The Personal Best program was introduced into the school in 2015 to build student knowledge and resilience about age relevant issues, and to promote positive mental health. For example, Year 7 examines issues related to bullying and friendship; Year 8 examines cyber-safety and Personal Relationships; Year 9 examines resilience and decision-making, and Year 10 examines planning for the future and mental health.

Successfully completing this program leads to a positive entry being made onto both a student’s record and her yearly report. Would you please encourage your daughter to complete her Personal Best program in 2017 and to raise any issues derived from the program requiring follow-up? Students are given an hour each week during Thursday and Friday DEAR to complete Personal Best; the school’s expectation is that everyone will complete it. Students involved in other DEAR programs such as Mentoring are exempted however.

Learning Presentations On Monday, 26 October, normal classes for Years 7, 8 and 9 were put on hold to enable these years to develop their Learning Presentations for 2017. Learning Presentations involve students reflecting on their learning achievements for 2017 and establishing learning goals for 2018. We are hoping that as many parents as possible will be visiting the School in Weeks 7 & 8 to hear their daughter’s presentation. It is one of the most important things we do at our school and parent support is critical to making this work. Family Contact Policy During school hours when a student is unwell
Families, if your daughter contacts you directly from school to say she is unwell, please tell her to approach a teacher or Office A for assistance.
yyStudents should not contact parents directly when sick, injured or in need of other support. yyStudents should get help from a teacher or the Office A staff. yyStaff will contact families when necessary. Office A staff are the First Aid providers. yyStaff manage decision making, with families, about whether a student should be in Sick Bay or go home when unwell. yyWe appreciate your support to ensure all students are looked after at school when required, and you are contacted when necessary.
BYOD Reminder
A reminder to all students & families about BYOD – all students are expected to have their device every lesson every day – tech support is available Tuesday to Thursday in the Library with Mr Zima and Mr Kaczorowski. We are now monitoring all students and will advise families if no device is brought on more than 2 occasions in a month.
ASK Homework Centre
A reminder to all students and families about Monday afternoon homework centre ASK, coordinated by our Youth Support Officer Mr Safi, in the Library every week until 4.30pm, afternoon tea provided. All students 7-10 welcome. Senior Student Support continues on Wednesday afternoons during Sport time for Year 12 in the Library with Mrs McLelland.

Adopt a Solar Panel WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP CGHS BECOME MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE AND SAVE MONEY ON ELECTRICITY AT THE SAME TIME? This would be great for the school and it could use the money saved for other school and student needs. At the end of 2017, CGHS is planning to install more than 300 solar panels on the roofs of the Library, the MPC, the Science Block and the Canteen at a cost of more than $100,000. This will save the school around $15,000 per year in electricity costs. "Adopt a Solar Panel" is a joint fundraiser between the school, the Parents and Citizens Association, the Student Representative Council and the Student Environmental Ambassadors as part of the School’s Green Energy Project.
"Adopt a Solar Panel" was launched at the school’s trivia night in August and already 52 panels have been adopted. Our target is to adopt 150 by the end of 2017 and all 300 by June 2018.
You can donate $50 per solar panel to be part of the project and support the school’s drive to be more sustainable and reduce its electricity costs. The cost of the solar panels is already mostly covered through government subsidies, the school, and previous fundraising, so the money raised by "Adopt a Solar Panel" will go towards a major lighting upgrade.
Can you help us do it?
There are about 1000 fluorescent lights in the school and the funds raised will be used to help the school replace the existing lights with much more efficient lights. The school needs about $115,000 to do the lighting upgrade and expects to save around $25,000 per year in electricity costs. It will also improve lighting quality and reduce maintenance costs. Chinese Languages Spectacular By Angela Wei On the 23rd of October, students who are currently studying Chinese at Canterbury Girls High participated in the Chinese Language Spectacular to share their learning about the Chinese culture. Various schools, both Primary and Secondary, comprised of students from all year groups, came together to contribute to various choir performances that showcased a range of traditional Chinese songs. In addition to the choirs, individual performances were also delivered. Canterbury Girls High was one of the schools that performed a traditional Chinese dance, which lucidly depicted the students’ passion for further delving into the exuberant Chinese culture. This event complemented the students’ understanding of the rich Chinese traditions and cultures. Due to the contribution of willing and talented dancers, the encouraging and engaging spirit of Canterbury Girls High’s Chinese teacher, Ms Liu, as well as the choreographer of the dance, Renee Xu, our school was able to deliver a memorable and meaningful performance to a large-scale audience. Overall, it was a splendid night, filled with the vibrant colours and sounds of Chinese culture! Congratulations to the following students: Year 7: Margaret Ji, Ophelia Leighton and Sophia Miralis. Dance Showcase The evening’s repertoire included items by the Years 8, 9 and 10 Dance elective classes, the CGHS Dance Company, the Dance Ensemble and solo and duet pieces. Marie Ikonoumou, Lyndsey Barry-Byrnes, Evie Muir, Franki Eastment, Kiarna Tiata Barnes, Georgia Kirkwood and Eleanor Dunstan were featured dancers in the program. Vale Pamela Young Pamela Young, school captain in 1963, passed away on Wednesday 4th October from acute leukaemia. She was a wonderful person, loved by her peers and she made a fantastic school captain. The year group from 1963 leaving certificate meet every November for a reunion lunch. In 2013 we held a special celebration for our 50 year reunion which included a tour of the school and a lovely morning tea provided by the school. Pamela Young was at that event – many of us had not seen her since our school days prior to that. We will always remember Pam and are very saddened by her death. Canterbury Girls High School extends condolences to family and friends of Pamela.

Year 9 RUOK Day at Ashfield Boys HS
RUOK Day is a significant event in the mental health and wellbeing program in Stage 5 and this year we again held our own PDHPE run lunchtime event hosted by Year 9 classes. An additional combined Year 9 Rich Curriculum Day was held in conjunction with Ashfield Boys HS, a great success in developing knowledge and skills in looking after self and others. This initiative is linked to DoE wellbeing focus areas of Connect, Succeed, Thrive.

Zeal theatre day
CogniZance with ABHS
Year seven students and students from Drama Elective classes and Drama Ensemble groups, had the opportunity and privilege to view a performance and take part in a theatre workshop run by Zeal Theatre Company on Friday 20th October. The Theatre Company were on top form as they celebrated their 150th performance of their emotional and heartfelt performance of Burnt, an original play written and devised by the company to highlight the pressures and perspective of those living in Australia’s bush. Thirty five students from Ashfield Boys High school also viewed the performance and participated in the workshop. Throughout the performance & workshop, students from the two schools collaborated in an enthusiastic and accomplished manner, to create “excellence and sensitivity”, as described by Zeal Theatre Company’s Stefo Nantsou. Following the performance students were also engaged in an open forum where questions were posed to the actors about various topics, ranging from the process of putting together a live performance to the contemporary issues that resonate within the play. It was clear from the enjoyment and involvement of the students that the day gave them the opportunity to see life beyond their usual neighborhood and work with neighbours beyond their usual day. The importance of community, neighbours and family was an important take home message, reinforced by actors on the day. The day with ZEAL theatre provided an opportunity for our students to work with professional actors to come to understand how to develop quality drama and how theatre can be used as a great tool to start a simple conversation with any audience about issues that impact us all.

Mental Health Public Speaking
PDHPE Year 10 Child Studies
Congratulations to Eleanor Dunstan, Emma Lemonjian, and Ruby Gee for their impressive representation of CGHS at the annual Mental Health Service Conference, held in August at The Hilton Hotel Sydney. The girls were invited to deliver their speech from last years Mental Health Public Speaking Challenge to a ballroom full of mental health advocates, who were very impressed by their delivery and exploration of the topic of Psychosis: Myths & Facts. Thank you Ms Slattery for helping the students prepare and settle their nerves prior to their speech. – Ms Cooper
Year 10 Child Studies electives students attended an excursion to The Magic Yellow Bus in Week 8, Term 3. The Magic Yellow Bus is a mobile playgroup run by the Inner West Council which operates out of local parks. The service is free of charge and available to parents and carers of children aged from 6 weeks to primary school age. CGHS Students observed the different activities provided such as the infant activity mat, play dough table and balancing beams as part of their investigation of home care opportunities for children not attending formal child care. Students also participated in mock interviews during class time involving the preparation of cover letter, resume and possible interview questions they could expect if applying for a job in the childcare industry.

Three Yr 9 students were involved in the "Mental Health Public Speaking Challenge - with a twist" final at Homebush Boys is Week 8, Term 3, supported by peers in the preparation of their topic: Bullying - not my business or everyone's business. The challenge has been running for its 4th year and attracts public and private schools in the Sydney region. This year our students competed against 8 schools to highlight mental health issues faced by today’s youth. Although Strathfield Girls took out the challenge this year, our students were commended on their research and presentation of this important health topic. Australian Mathematics Competition 2017 The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has been held annually in late July or early August since 1978 with many thousands of students across Australia presenting for the challenge. This is not a traditional “maths” exam where skills taught in class are routinely tested. Instead students are asked to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes. The earliest problems are very easy and all students should be able to attempt them. The problems get progressively more difficult until the end, when they are challenging to the most gifted student. Students of all standards will make progress and find a point of challenge. The AMC is a fun competition with many of the problems set in situations familiar to students and showing the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives.

We would like to encourage more students from all ability levels to ‘have a go’ in 2018- you never know, you might just surprise yourself. This year Canterbury Girls High School entered 135 students across the 3 levels offered (52 Year 7 and 8 girls for the Junior paper, 53 Year 9 and 10 girls for the Intermediate paper and 30 Year 11 girls for the Senior paper). Again our CGHS students achieved wonderful results with 32% of the candidates receiving an award of Distinction or Credit, and approximately 49% of students earning a Proficiency Certificate. The 2017 Australian Science Olympiads were held earlier this year with eight of our most dedicated Year 11 Science students sitting the examination in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Big congratulations to the following students who received a Credit, placing within the top 20% of the country. Emily Qui and Danyang Wang received Credits in both Physics and Chemistry while Ariana Costas and Matilda Grimm both received Credits in Biology. VET Hospitality The girls were so excited to finish sewing their shorts that they could not wait to try them on. Learning to use a sewing machine was new to many of the students in the class but before long they developed their confidence and skills and were able to complete their shorts to a high standard.

The year 11’s designed a mouth-watering menu of savoury and sweet delectable dishes for this monumental occasion. The following pictures are the Hospitality class preparing in advance and serving on the day. Well done class.
