Introduction

The Power of the Sun

Around the world, the sun has been the subject of reverence and rituals since ancient times. As the biggest, brightest, most noticeable object in our skies, it’s only natural that the sun commands our attention. In Egypt, the sun god Ra was closely connected with kingship, bestowing onto the leaders the divine right of rule. In Celtic lands, both Belenus and Lugh were honored as deities associated with light, fire, and the power of the sun. In Incan culture, the sun god Inti was regarded as the supreme god and the direct ancestor of the Inca. Archeological evidence of solar worship around the

world dates from the earliest times, with solar pictographs and petroglyphs and temples and other sacred sites dedicated to the sun present in many lands. We also see a solar alignment in many monoliths, temples, pyramids, and other special places, with structures and standing stones found to be in perfect alignment with the sunrise or sunset on one of the solstices or equinoxes that mark the changing seasons.

The sun dominates our lives here on Earth, providing light and heat and marking the passage of hours, days, and seasons. While it’s fairly easy to miss seeing the moon for many days on end and forget its current phase (especially when the skies are cloudy), the sun’s presence is more obvious and its effects are experienced in a very tangible way no matter what the weather. Even the cloudiest and stormiest day is much lighter and brighter than the clearest night; even when temperatures are below freezing, the sun’s heat provides enough warmth to make life on Earth possible. The sun is essential to our existence, and it doesn’t take a deeply spiritual outlook or any psychic intuition to see that. We’re strongly connected to the sun by virtue of living on a planet that orbits this celestial body, and just as the moon affects us here on Earth as it orbits around our planet, so too are we affected by changing dynamics as we

make our annual journey around the sun, and our daily rotation toward and away from its luminous and fiery face.

While it’s virtually impossible to overlook the sun completely, to really tune into its nuances and make the most of the shifting solar tides requires more knowledge and practice. To connect with any source of energy, we must understand the nature and essence of that energy, and we must be able to open our own energies to receive it and to harmonize our vibrations with it so that the energy can flow from one to the other in a complete circuit. Without this connection, the circuit is not complete and we miss out on tapping directly into this main power source. It’s the difference between being an object in a room merely illuminated by a lamp and being the lamp itself, directly plugged into the source of energy that makes that light possible. Connecting with the sun in deeper ways than is typical for the average person helps forge a direct line of connection to this tremendous power source, and we can harness this energy to fuel our magick.

In this book, you’ll discover more about our celestial guide through the galaxy as you explore different ways to connect with the sun through a wide variety of magickal practices. After an overview of solar magick basics, you’ll delve into the details of solar timing, learning how to plan and align your

OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

Over four and a half billion years ago, a giant cloud of gas and dust floating through space was set into motion, hit by a powerful wave of energy from an exploding star that sent it spinning. The giant cloud rotated faster and faster as gravitational forces pulled the bulk of its material in toward the center. The edges of the cloud began to flatten as a massive sphere of plasma and gas started forming at its core. This sphere became the sun, while the remaining materials in the cloud coalesced into the planets, moons, comets, and asteroids that occupy our solar system. Consisting of around 99.8 percent of our solar system’s total mass, the sun’s tremendous forces of gravity hold everything else in place in orbit around it. As earth and the other planets orbit the sun, the sun is in constant orbit around the center of the galaxy.

magick to make the best use of the sun’s power at any given hour of the day or month of the year. A section on solar correspondences provides an easy reference to utilize when creating your own solar spells and rituals, and a slew of recipes for solar potions and powders, magickal formulas, and seasonal spells, rituals, crafts, and traditions offer an abundance of ideas and options for solar magick for every occasion. At the end of the book, you’ll find a list of activities to stay connected with the sun throughout every month of the year. You can read this book straight through or skip around to the parts that are most needed in the moment. Let this book be your resource and guide as you explore the mysteries of the sun and its magick.

Chapter One Solar Magick Basics

Although sun magick and solar celebrations are nothing new, many modern witches tend to focus their practice on things more lunar rather than solar. For many, working with the moon just seems to come more naturally than working with the sun. The moon’s energies are darker, more subtle, more mysterious. We witches are drawn to the shadows like moths to a flame, and that beloved moon we see in the sky is the primary light that has powered many a magick spell throughout the eons. However, the sun has its own essence

and energies that give it particular effects and powers that are extremely beneficial in many magickal workings. Some magickal goals are simply more solar in nature than lunar, and for aims such as general success, victory, fast growth, confidence, strength, power, authority, respect, and abundance, the sun is king when it comes to fueling your magick.

We all have unique affinities and connections with the sun, and exploring your natural instincts and perceptions in relation to the sun is a great way to start discovering and deepening these connections. Ask yourself these questions to begin understanding your own connection to the celestial body that rules our world:

1. How do you feel in the sunshine?

2. What words would you use to describe the sun? Do any of these words describe traits you exhibit, or that you find and admire in others?

3. Do you prefer a sunrise or a sunset? How is the experience different when comparing how you feel watching a sunrise as opposed to watching a sunset?

4. Have you noticed any changes in your general mood and thought patterns as the seasons shift as we make our orbit around the solar system? How do your activities, goals, and mindset shift with the changing seasons?

5. What are some things that you associate with a sunny day?

6. What colors do you think of when you think of the sun, and how would you describe each of these colors?

7. Are there any scents that bring to mind the warmth or brightness of the sun?

8. What animals can you think of that you associate mostly with daytime?

9. How does your energy change and shift when transitioning from day to night and from night to day? Do you have a daytime mode and a nighttime mode?

10. What sort of activities can you think of that are better suited for the daytime? What activities are best reserved for warmer, sunny days?

11. How does the sunlight feel on your skin when you’re outside on a pleasant day? How does it feel to be in the sun on an extremely hot day? How about on a very cold day?

12. What are your current favorite mediums for magick? How might it benefit you to discover more tools and ingredients that can be utilized to connect to the sun and harness its power to fuel your magick?

one

13. Envision yourself shining and happy in the sunlight of a beautiful day. What are the details of this vision that forms in your mind? What are you wearing? What is the landscape? Who and what is with you or near you in this image your mind creates? How does the sun feel on your body in this visualization?

Connecting with the Sun

Connecting with the sun is best accomplished through direct experience. Spending time outside during the day whenever it’s safe, comfortable, and possible to do so can be very beneficial in improving both mental and physical health. Even if you’re only outside for a few minutes at a time, the benefits you’ll gain from these brief moments of solar connection will be tangible. Be sure to protect your body from the elements, then get out in those elements. Even if you go right back inside, direct exposure to the sunlit outdoor world will have a positive effect. If you’re not able to go outside, looking out a window can also be an effective way to invite the sun’s energies into your home and inner space. Looking at photos of the sun or of sunny locales, or making collections of poems, songs, and images relating to the sun is another way you can align yourself with solar energies. Learning more about the sun’s physical processes and how it enables and affects life on

earth is another great way to foster appreciation and awe for the sun and thus strengthen your personal connection and ability to access its power and potential.

Sunny Magick on a Cloudy Day

Whether day or night, hot or cold, cloudy or clear, the sun is always shining even when we don’t see or feel it. A sunny day is not required for solar magick—though it can certainly be beneficial to go outdoors for solar spellcasting, it’s not necessary. Solar magick can be made anywhere at any time. Some ways to connect with the sun on a cloudy day or at nighttime include using symbols or images of the sun as focal points for the magick or to add a solar ambience. Solar aligned herbs and stones can also be used not only as ingredients for magick but also to help draw the sun’s energies into your ritual space. You could also use candles, string lights, or a special lamp. Some witches find benefit in adding grow lights in the home to help bring that fuller spectrum of light into our lives when weather or mundane demands and restrictions deprive us of adequate time in the sun. Whenever you are missing the sun, broaden your perspective and think about the fact that our planet is ever orbiting this glowing mass of fire, photons, and nuclear reactions. The sun is always with us, and its power is available to us 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.

Solar Journal

To gain a better understanding of how Earth’s position and tilt in relation to the sun causes our experience of changing seasons, observe it firsthand. Choose a place where you can go regularly to observe the sunrise and sunset. Try to find a place with a clear view of the horizon in the eastern and western directions. If you can’t find such a place and your view is obstructed in all directions, you’ll still learn a lot about the sun and the earth in this exercise. Draw a circle to represent your vantage point and mark out any landmarks within that circle. Also mark out the cardinal directions. Make anywhere from 52 to 365 copies of this paper depending on how often you plan to perform your observations. As often as possible and striving for at least once a week, try to observe the sunrise and sunset from this same vantage point, drawing on the paper where exactly you see the sun rising or setting. On the paper write the date

The sun’s core reaches temperatures of roughly 27,000,032 degrees Fahrenheit.

and your observations of the physical characteristics you see in the natural world around you—are the leaves are green, is the ground covered in snow, et cetera. Depending on the weather and on your own schedule and time constraints, it won’t always be possible to witness the sunrise and sunset, but even if you do this exercise sporadically, you’ll be able to see how our view of the sun shifts as we circle around it. You’ll find the sun rising at due east and setting at due west on the days of the Spring and Fall Equinox, and between these days, the position of the sunrise and sunset as we see from our vantage point will shift a little each day. At the Summer Solstice, we see the sun rise and set at its most northerly point, and at the Winter Solstice, we see the sun rise and set at its most southern point from where we are. Observing how we actually see the sun from our earth-centered vantage point while keeping in mind the astronomical reality of Earth’s spin on its tilted axis as it orbits the sun helps deepen our understanding of our planet’s movement around the sun. Understanding the why behind the changing seasons helps the witch to better connect to the energies of the sun and earth and learn more about the relationship between our planet and this fiery orb around which we orbit.

Preparing for Solar Magick

As with any form of magick or ritual, it’s nice to prepare ourselves beforehand whenever we’re planning on doing a solar working, whenever time and circumstances allow us to do so. By taking the time to clear ourselves of the “psychic dirt” that accumulates in our conscious and subconscious minds— the worry, doubt, anxieties, and annoyances of the day—we become more open spiritually and thus better able to channel and weave the energies required to work the magick at hand. How you prepare for solar magick is largely a matter of personal preference and opportunity. If you don’t have a lot of time to prepare and need to clear your energies as quickly as possible, try standing with your arms held by your sides with your hands open wide and your palms facing the sun, and envision the sunlight flowing through you. Another way to clear your energies quickly and prepare to attune to solar energies is to rub salt between your palms. Just pour some salt into a bowl, grab a pinch, and rub your hands together over the bowl as if you were washing them with the salt. Another quick cleanse method to prepare for solar magick is to hold a citrine crystal in your hands and touch it to your chest and forehead. If you have more time, a shower or bath can be very nice. Even washing your face and hands can make a big

impact, helping you feel more relaxed and refreshed before casting your magick. You might anoint your body with orange or rosemary essential oil, oils that radiate a solar quality. For clothing, consider fabrics in white, gold, orange, or yellow, or go skyclad and adorn yourself with solar themed jewelry and nothing else. Consider jewelry in gold or copper, or anything featuring solar aligned stones such as citrine or ruby. Rayed discs and other solar symbols can be found in the form of pendants and beads that can be incorporated into your magickal jewelry. You might also use makeup or body paints to adorn your body with symbols of the sun.

Sun Bath

Try this special bathing ritual to help attune to the energies of the sun. It can be done as a prelude to a spell or ritual, or it can serve as the main magickal act itself. Take the peel of an orange and tie it in a piece of mesh fabric or cheesecloth along with a few sprigs of rosemary. The fabric needs to be breathable enough to allow the energies and essences of the herbs to seep through and diffuse into the water as it heats, and it needs to be tightly woven enough to prevent physical chunks of the plants from getting in your bathtub. Pieces of worn out stockings and tights or scraps from unwanted T-shirts work well.

chapter one

Tie the fabric tightly to secure the orange peel and rosemary within it, then place it in a bathtub filled with warm water. Add 2 cups Epsom salts and 1 cup table salt to the water, and swirl it around with your hand as you imagine the bright rays of the sun shining on your bath water. As you bathe, imagine the sun’s energies charging you up and attuning your vibrations to channel its essence and power. If you don’t have a bathtub, you can pour the mixture into a large bowl or pot and soak only your hands and feet, or tie the salts in a mesh cloth to use in the shower like a loofah scrub.

Solar Tools of Magick

Just as the witch’s cauldron is associated with the moon, other witch’s tools have a solar correspondence. It’s important to note that these tools can be used in any form or variety of magick, whether or not that magick is solar in nature. These tools can also be dedicated more specifically to any element, deity, planet, or anything else in the cosmos. The tool itself, however, in its primary function and base form, is generally considered to be symbolic of the sun. Solar tools of magick are generally used to amplify, to direct, to purify, and to cut or sever. Here are a few of the witch’s common tools that carry the solar aspect:
