Praise for The Book of riTual BaThs

“The Book of Ritual Baths gives us a simple, but deeply profound way to soothe our mind, body, and spirit. What a pleasure to read and use!”

—Amy B. Scher, author of How to Heal Yourself When No One Else Can

“This book is a gem. Chanda guides you through the practice of ritual bathing perfectly, and her recipes are my favorite combo: simple and effective. Plus, I love the compassion and nuance she brings to the topics of manifestation and ritual work.”

—Tess Whitehurst, author of Magical Housekeeping

“Water takes on life within Chanda’s book and promises to inspire the same within you. Everything required to tap into the ancient wisdom of water—to magically evolve through her recipes for rituals—is here. From types of water to ways to wash within it for creativity, health, sensuality, manifesting, nervous and subtle body repair, intuitive activation, and more. We begin this life within the waters of our mother, and through Chanda’s book, we can now renew ourselves within the sacred waters of spirit. Her impressive appendix is the perfect accompaniment to selecting everything from herbs to stones for your personal applications.”

—Cyndi Dale, author of many books, including Energy Healing for Trauma, Stress & Chronic Illness

“As a person born into a heritage of ritual bathing and with a deep commitment to the highest good, I believe that Chanda offers guidance that is grounded in accessibility and inclusivity. The rituals she has created require water and presence with options to include stones, oil, cards, and other tools for those who have them and feel called. There is a clear commitment to protect our wild waterways and offer everyone a pathway into a relationship with them. Her offering with this writing has opened some options that I will be incorporating into my regular ritual bathing.”

“What a joyful and inclusive exploration of ritual bathing. … This book is a tremendous resource for those who are incorporating bathing into their sacred or self-healing practices. As a gentle, self-paced method of connecting with the body, baths can be a valuable part of the sexual trauma healing process. Chanda Parkinson writes with great sensitivity to a wide variety of wants and needs that people may bring to their bathing practices. … The Book of Ritual Baths is truly an extensive resource of bathing inspiration, methods, and correspondences.”

“I have long found baths to be a refuge and saving grace for soothing rest and recovery, but Chanda takes this practice to a new level for spirituality, connection, and healing. She shares a journey to experience water in a ceremony, reminding us of its ancient wisdom, where we can hold space for nature’s rhythms and our own psychic senses, and thrive in our resilient life.”

Chanda Parkinson’s rather eclectic background and passions include the arts and music, professional work in the nonprofit sector, owning and operating several businesses, volunteering as a social justice and human rights advocate, and mothering three children. An early life interest in Christian theological studies expanded to include astrology, tarot, Celtic shamanism, folk magic, and witchcraft, which she continues to devour with great fervor. She has been a student and practitioner of psychic development since the late 1990s. Chanda has been a professional psychic intuitive, tarot reader, astrologist and spiritual teacher since 2006. Her greatest joy is witnessing others discovering and stepping into their own natural spiritual gifts.

PREFACE

Annually around the new moon in July, I make my way to where I grew up, the plains of North Dakota. This time, I’m determined to try a new ritual bathing experience. Ritual bathing has been a part of my life for the past twenty years, but I’ve yet to attempt a cold plunge. Online research has led me to a Nordic Thermocycling retreat center in Kindred, North Dakota.

I was guided by an invisible conductor of a symphony of circumstances prompting its place on my summer North Dakota adventure itinerary. The plan was set in motion, and I felt a sense of determination despite my reservations about submerging in cold water. I consider myself a strongly magical-minded person, which quite often puts me in synchronous situations. I notice everything. Still, I insist on using my GPS when I go anywhere new; to me, GPS is one of the most witchy tools offered

xviii Preface

to humankind. Though all the GPS coordinates in the world could not have insulated me from getting lost, I still felt the power of my own inner will in tandem with some supernatural force guiding me there. Finally, I arrived at the doorstep of Moonglade, a gorgeous retreat center set back in the trees, cuddled by vegetation and acres of land. Given the determination it took me to actually find my way, along with the events that led me there, I could tell something interesting was about to unfold. About an hour later I found myself staring up from an ice-waterfilled Rubbermaid tub at a nearby tree. I fixed my gaze on the bird perched on a branch just above me. It chirped back at me enthusiastically, as if to cheer me on. The cold plunge was a jolt that shattered the boundaries between my physical form and the elements surrounding me. In that moment, I knew the ancient wisdom of water was reminding me of the resiliency of life. I was cold, but I was focused. The mental fortitude I called upon was familiar, similar to water birthing well over a decade ago. I had been tested and stretched by the power of will and the mind before under different circumstances. Though it was challenging at first, my body relaxed the more I breathed. Those short minutes seemed to drag on, stretching my mental capacity to remain present. Jen, the owner, brilliantly coached me, telling me that I was safe. Embodying my own resilience was absolutely breathtaking. Something was shifting within—I could feel it.

Preface xix

Just one more minute. My body signaled it was time to get out. Moving from the cold plunge tank to warm up under the July sun, I rested. After only a short break, I took to the 200-degree steam sauna for as long as I could withstand the heat. Then it was back into the cold plunge and repeating the process once again. The extremes in temperature were inducing an unintentional trancelike state. Though I felt focused and calm, I was also aware I was being pushed to the edges of my psychic senses. It was magical.

Three rotations between hot sauna and cold plunge later, my body finally settled into a comfortable rhythm. There was no longer hot and cold, light and dark. I had surrendered. In this sacred dance, I found a deeper connection to my body and spirit. My mind gave over to a calm it hadn’t known in a long time. I suddenly felt like I was a part of the elements. Under the big blue sky and piercing sunshine, I suddenly crossed a threshold into the sacred inner spaces of my soul. Surrounded by earth, water, sky, sun, I was becoming a conduit for inner peace. My body’s response to the alternating temperatures was alchemizing my own physical power and potential. The faces I saw in the trees with my inner eye at the end were land ancestors and nature spirits saluting me, encouraging and inviting me to continue what I had begun. I offered thoughts of deep gratitude in return, acknowledging those magical beings’ roles in holding sacred space for all who came here for healing.

Preface

This particular technique exposed the truth about the water element’s role in spirituality and healing. Ritual bathing is not a solitary endeavor but a communion with the elements, a partnership with nature’s rhythms. It reveals the extraordinary capabilities of the human body to not just endure but to thrive and transform. I felt the collaboration of the inanimate beings around me, the trees, plants, grass, earth, and rocks sitting in the sauna. As the sweat rained down my body, I allowed myself to release energy I didn’t even realize was inside of me, ready to go. As I cold plunged again, the initial sting transmuted into rejuvenation and revitalization. Something new and abundant was upon me.

A few days later and inspired by the energy and healing provided by that day in Kindred, I spent time plunging in a 50- to 60-degree human-made lake about an hour from my hometown. The new moon was beckoning, taunting, inviting me to give in to the power of my own potential and transformation. I offered a prayer and felt my heart opening in gratitude for the beauty all around me. I was suddenly a part of it. Lying down on a hot, large rocky outcropping in the sun, I felt something changing. My body felt relief. My mind completely at ease. It seemed as if time collapsed and the only thing was this moment. I slept better that night than I had in months.

INTRODUCTION

A ritual bath is any ceremonial act using water for the purposes beyond mere physical cleanliness. Throughout different major world religions, ritual washing is called ablutions. Examples include the Mikvah, a life transitory ritual bath in Judaism. Baptism is the water ritual in Christianity used at birth or as a rite of passage to embrace the concept of salvation. The Hindu Kumbha Mela festival is an annual water celebratory tradition. Water symbolizes human purity in the Islamic religion and plays an integral role in the Hammams (public baths) that once covered ancient Muslim cities. Waterways are seen as deeply sacred in many Indigenous cultural traditions, as they allowed people to move about and transport with ease. Water Priests and Priestesses in Pagan and Wiccan traditions have heeded the spiritual calling throughout ancient history to protect and nurture specific and important sacred

bodies of water. Those who feel chosen still undergo a rite of passage or initiation to practice those traditions today.

Ritual bathing has surfaced in recent decades through a modern context separate from religion and ethnocentric traditions. Ritual bath methods have been adapted and recognized as a universal physical and spiritual healing tool. Evidence is everywhere, and methods are vast: Salt flotation tanks, the cold plunge, hot springs tourist destinations, steam baths, the modernized communal bath, and sound bathing are just a few examples being widely embraced.

Many have embraced these practices as a physical and spiritual healing tool for reasons vast and varied; no two stories are the same. However, the sense that we as a society are reclaiming something deep and old that connects us all is real. Social media is rife with videos of spellcasting, folk magic rituals, and group-performed water blessings or sacred rites. This phenomenon exploded during COVID-19, when we were starved for connection and healing. A surfacing hunger for the sacred is igniting healing connection in both personal and communal spaces.

It is through the modern lens of the resurgence of ritual bath that this book took shape. The calling into ritual bathing in many forms is resurfacing amongst the masses during a time where it is deeply needed. Devotees of cold plunges, river dipping, hot springs, and com-

munal bathing don’t only hold those practices as a singular occasional experience. It is often a lifestyle. In the quickening moments of a ritual bath, there is time to stop and breathe. Indoor ritual bathing methods offer a private haven of comfort. Outdoor options allow others to commune in deep and meaningful ways with the natural world, restoring a deeper sense of connection to the greater web of life. Some are so deeply and forever affected by their ritual bath journeys that they dedicate their lives to helping others by opening and running spas and sauna/cold plunge studios.

A ritual bath is not only for those suffering from various physical ailments; it is also a complement to traditional forms of counseling and psychotherapy. It can be incorporated into new and existing spiritual and witchcraft practices. It is a way to enhance body positivity, connect with our own sensuality, and heal sexual trauma.

The ritual bath is perhaps the most versatile addition to your beginning or already established spiritual practice or craft. When conscientiously practiced with respect for the various ways in which bath as a ritual is used in a variety of contexts, it can open doors to a whole new realm of healing and spiritual exploration. Incorporating special intentions, tools, and symbols for the purpose of releasing old unwanted energy restores a deeper, sustainable, and accessible sense of calm. The benefits are many, both spiritual and physical. Ritual bath can be used

for cleansing, easing stress and anxiety, releasing emotional trauma, synching with the cycles of the moon, relaxation, and meditation, as well as seasonally or in tandem with the solstices and equinoxes.

Years ago, I incorporated ritual baths into my practice for mental health reasons. Recently, I began expanding my bath practice to include correspondences such as essential oils, candles, crystals, and herbal tea remedies for the moon phases. I came to consider it a treasured time to decompress from a stressful day or week. Sliding into a bath at the end of a hectic day became something to look forward to, and including my favorite scents and plant allies became an integral part of my craft.

Over time, I realized a surprising additional side effect of the deep relaxation I was able to achieve: spontaneously receiving messages from a force outside myself. I could only qualify this energy as supernatural. I was suddenly receiving what felt like entire downloads of information, sometimes ideas, sometimes creative words, or vivid direction for something I was working on at the time.

Reaching a fever-pitch of enthusiastic exploration of the variety of ritual bathing options available prompted this book’s creation. I wondered how my discoveries could assist others. Expanding my ritual bath practice into other methods and tools has been an enriching and eye-opening experience. I am eager to share what I have learned along with the wisdom of other holistic healing professionals.

There is no denying the powerful effect of using water as a symbol of vitality and cleansing in ritual rites and private magical practices. Having the ability to immerse your entire body in a bath filled with herbs and oils while setting intentions for what you wish to achieve will have a tremendously long-lasting effect. Invoking the energy and spirit of water, whether you are submersed or merely near it, is entirely possible.

how To use This Book

This book is flexible and can be altered and shaped to meet your own spiritual practices, craft, and needs. You can adapt the exercises to your own surroundings and environment. It will provide you with substantive areas to explore through the magical act of ritual bath, as an accessible sacred tool.

We begin by uncovering the multitude of benefits and reasons for including ritual bathing into your daily life. Learn about the uses of the ritual bath for physical, mental, emotional, sexual, and spiritual well-being. Explore different types of bathing you can experiment with and open your mind to new and exciting possibilities you may have never considered. This book is truly for every person who is interested in ritual bathing whether or not you have access to an actual tub.

Explore the types of water you may use in your own practice, as well as what practical tools you will want to have at your fingertips for the sake of ease. A step-by-step ritual bath practices guide offers you

plenty of structure and form while you grow comfortable with your own personal preferences. I will walk you through safely opening and closing your bath ritual. That section is jam-packed with suggestions on how to use colors, astrological influences, herbs, oils, and crystals, just for starters.

In the tools of the craft section, you will discover how to enhance your own witchcraft or magical practice with ways to safely activate whatever bath you choose using sigils, raising energy, candle divination, and bath teas both for drinking and dunking in the bathwater. Suggestions highlighting how to merge an intentional ritual bath practice with spellcasting, meditations and guided visualization, intuition and psychic development and the wheel of the year are in abundance here.

Ritual baths are the perfect tool for connecting with and channeling the phases of the moon. Connection to lunar cycles is incorporated into many magical practices, so this book will break down each and explore their ritual bath techniques. The extensive appendix at the end will help you in organizing multiple and varied correspondences for ease of use.

If you can’t physically submerge yourself in a tub due to health reasons or a disability, you have options. Not everyone has access to a tub for water immersion or the financial resources to visit a professional spa. We will explore the multiple ways you can incorporate rit-

ual bathing that doesn’t include the use of a traditional bathtub. Once you discover what sort of bath technique is the right fit for you, the range of possibilities for merging your bath ritual style with the seasons, phases of the moon, and wheel of the year for maximum personal healing benefit becomes vast. A final note to keep in mind as you embark on this rigorous bath ritual exploration. I present this material primarily through the lens of my background as a twenty-year practicing psychic and healing service professional, astrologer, witch, and teacher of the magical arts. Both my personal and professional practices are heavily influenced by animism, spiritualism, astrology, modern traditional witchcraft, and folk magic. This is the lens through which the concepts are primarily framed. I do not subscribe to one particular religion; I don’t personally separate nature, reality, or the universe from a god/goddess. Every living thing is sacred and has its own inherent wisdom. I experience divinity in the interconnectedness of all living things. In addition, because I reside in the Northern Hemisphere, the wheel of the year here is presented through that framework. If you are a Southern Hemisphere dweller, you can make the necessary adjustments for your own seasonal changes.

A commitment to inclusivity in this book is grounded in our shared humanity while simultaneously recognizing the varied spaces, orientations, and backgrounds from which we enter healing processes. The realization that no two healing paths or stories are the same humbled me deeply throughout this writing process. In addition to sharing my own expertise and research, I sought out a breadth of perspectives from other individuals such as holistic practitioners and business owners who are passionate advocates for wellness and healing. I had absolutely no idea how deeply personal bath ritual is for so many. I explored the intersection of ritual bathing with ritual magic, communal experiences, sex therapy, herbalism, extremes like sauna and cold plunging, and in thoughtful conversation with LGBTQIA+ beloveds, as well as with those who inhabit an aversion to water submersion. Insight was forthcoming from several who don’t have bathtubs, or whose physical disabilities prevent full body submersion. A common thread emerged through the experiences of everyone I spoke to: Ritual bath methods of all sorts provide tremendous potential for healing body, mind, and soul.

I hope you find something that sparks your curiosity and inspires you to explore within the pages of this book. Whatever your personal journey through ritual bathing may be, I would love to hear from you. Your stories matter to me, as well as your own experiences with the healing power of ritual bath.

Chapter 1 RITUAL

We have sacrificed sacred rituals on the altar of time and to the worship of being busy. The conveniences of modern culture have often replaced the more methodical ritualized activity that once provided grounded rhythms, shape, and closure to the days of our lives, which can often drive feelings of isolation and loneliness. We may not realize how often throughout our day we are engaged in ritual activity. Making a pot of coffee is the perfect example. The ritual begins the moment we clean out the pot. Then we pour in the water and grind the coffee beans. Once brewed, a sharp bitter scent fills the air. We are actively engaging in something structured that takes presence and thought. The senses are stimulated, and as we take the first sip, we welcome the day. It’s a cherished ritual in many households. Our skin care routines are deeply rooted in ritual. There is a systematic process. It’s one where each product

applied has a function. We engage in our routines religiously, because we know how good it makes our skin feel, and it signals to our bodies we are ready to begin the day or go to bed at night. Performing a ritual is just as important as the purpose behind it. The process is just as important as the outcome.

Those of us magical-crafting or ritual-minded folks move simple daily ritual into the realm of the sacred. Our tools are often nature based. Song, prayer, incantations, chanting, or drumming are often included. We hearken back to an ancient time, one in which the earth was seen as a force to befriend, commune, and collaborate with. The focus is on shifting from the outcome of the ritual to the simple act of it, providing an opening for mystical and supernatural forces to enter our sphere of awareness. This is the space our hearts, minds, and intentions merge with the web of existence.

What we convey to the wheel of time when we are willing to partake in ritual-based activity is honoring the significance ritual plays in the cyclical nature of our lives. Whatever we work with in the physical realm (tools) becomes like little keys that unlock the spiritual potential of our thoughts and desires. The carefully curated steps of tool selection, gathering and preparing the space, and considering what is in our hearts can seem like a well-choreographed ballet of magical activity.

Rituals bring structure and form to a deeply chaotic world. They promote a strong sense of consistency and predictability that can stimulate a balancing effect on our overall well-being. However, just because the act of engaging in ritual can appear mundane doesn’t make it devoid of power. When we step into ritual with purpose and presence, we activate a kind of sacred alchemy that transforms the mundane into the mystical. Our thoughts, incantations, intentions, and actions align with universal forces, sending a ripple of energy through the etheric and physical realms alike. What happens behind the scenes in the invisible spheres around us is an incredible part of the mystery.

Ritual magic provides a foundation for communing with nature and deeply aligning with its rhythms while also serving as a channel to connect with the etheric realms. It’s the language of the Divine. It can be used for simple purposes such as enhancing intuition and elevating awareness, just as it can for complex ones such as manifestation, invoking the moon’s energy, connecting with ancestors, or coping with emotional trauma. Ritual has an organizing effect on the seemingly random forces of the universe that in turn harmonizes with our inner longings, desires, and wishes. In addition, ritual connects us with something greater than ourselves.

Rituals engage every part of us: our senses, hearts, and spirits. This holistic participation reminds us we are active creators in our own lives, capable of shaping not only our inner worlds but also the outer world we inhabit. Rituals are a form of co-creation with the universe. Each moment, word, and intention sends out a vibration that echoes beyond our immediate space. The power of ritual resides in remembering who we are and who we are capable of becoming.

The ritual begins the moment you choose it. Rituals help us mark significant moments, express gratitude, and seek guidance. By engaging in ritual, we tap into a collective human experience. Whether through the simplicity of preparing a meal with love or the complexity of crafting a ceremonial spell, rituals teach us to honor the sacredness of existence.

There are important considerations when embarking on any ritual-based practice, whether magical or mundane. First, set clear intentions—they shape the ritual’s entire tone. There are two forms of ritual practice: solitary and collective. They have different purposes and goals. Because much of what we’ll explore focuses on the ritual practice of bathing, most of it is solitary. However, there are incredibly meaningful collective forms celebrated that we’ll explore later.

Next, create a sacred space. Whether you are making a cup of coffee or engaging in your skin care routine, having a space that feels

calm, clean, and free of clutter provides the right container for your energy and focus. While a ritual bath looks different from making a cup of coffee, both benefit from similar approaches. Choose your tools thoughtfully. Each item you choose may carry meaning and significance. A special coffee cup for each season of the year (or in my case, each mood I’m in) acknowledges the present moment with thought and care. Seasonal teas and conscientious food preparation, or using herbs and seasonally appropriate food market items, make the moment sing with the recognition of our orientation to time and place. Taking a walk under a full moon, gazing through a telescope, making moon water, cleansing crystals, and stopping to meditate by a tree or under the stars are all simple ritual-based activities. Engage all your senses and commit fully to the process as you allow the experience to unfold naturally and notice how different you feel. Honor the process, not just the outcome. The act of performing a ritual is a sacred journey in itself regardless of the result.

Rituals nurture our minds and bodies by creating moments of stillness, intention, and connection in a fast-paced world. They provide structure, foster mindfulness, and assist us in appreciating the flow of the rhythms of life.

Chanda Parkinson presents nearly a dozen simple rituals for enhancing self-care and connecting to your spirituality. Even if you do not have a tub or the ability to submerge in water, Chanda has accessible options to heal body, mind, and soul. She offers baths for chakra cleansing, ancestral veneration, psychic development, sexual healing, manifestation, and more. She also shows you how to create your own rituals and bathe in harmony with the seasons and zodiac signs. Whether you prefer lunar bathing or lake plunges, this book will help you soak up the magical energy of baths.
