The Methods of the Moon Sign Book

hether we live in simple, primitive times or a time of high technology and mass communication, we need our connection to Mother Nature and an understanding of how all of her systems work together—soil, sun, wind, water, plants, animals, people, and planets.

The connections among elements of nature become especially relevant when we recognize that many energies—both subtle and obvious—flow through our world and affect all things. Ancient civilizations knew about these changing energies and were much more attuned to the subtle effects that they had on us.

In the world of unseen energies, it has long been accepted in many quarters that the position of the planets makes a difference in the energy flowing around planet Earth. Those who question these energy flows are often sadly divorced from nature.

Imagine placing a large rock in the waters of a flowing stream or creek. Immediately you would notice numerous changes in the flow of the water moving over, around, and past the rock.

It is no different with our solar system. We live on a planet that floats in a solar sea of energies and frequency waves. As the planets move around the sun, the currents of energy flowing through the solar sea change in the same way that flowing water changes around the rock placed in a creek or stream…and we are affected by those changes at every level—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The ability to detect these changes and their effect on us has long been organized into knowledge systems, and the Moon Sign Book has always been a stable anchor in maintaining this knowledge and recognizing its importance. We call these organized methods of gaining knowledge astrology , and ancient cultures around the globe used this as their science. It was how they found and maintained a sense of prediction, control, and security, something we are still striving for even today as we try to anticipate the cycles and events of our daily lives.

Although there are several ways of organizing and assessing these energy flows based on planetary positions, the Moon Sign Book uses the tropical system, which says that spring officially begins when the Sun is directly over the equator at noon, something that occurs around March 20 to 21 every year. Once that moment has been determined, the rest of the zodiac calendar is laid out at thirty-degree intervals. This allows us to be precise, but also flex with the changing nature of all things, including our solar system. We support a knowledge base that upholds the ancient wisdom and teaches it to all who are interested. We invite you to read what we have written here and to celebrate the interactions of these energies with the plants, animals, earth, and stars that share this time and space with us.

To stay consistent, it’s best to have a daily routine by completing the habit at the same time every day. Make a spreadsheet to keep track of your progress and remember to reward yourself for your perseverance.

Gardening by the Moon

Welcome to the world of gardening by the Moon! Unlike most gardening advice, this article is not about how to garden, it’s about when to garden. Timing is everything; if you know how to use the Moon, you’ll not only be in sync with nature but you can sit back and watch your garden grow beyond your wildest dreams.

Gardening by the Moon is nothing new. It’s been around since ancient times when people used both the Sun and the Moon to predict the tides, as well as fertility and growth cycles for plants and animals.

Lunar gardening is simple and the results are immediate. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner gardener with a single pot or an old hand with years of master gardening experience— your garden will grow bigger and better if you follow the cycles of the Moon and match up the right time with the right garden

Gardening by the Moon activity. When the temperature has dropped and the sun is low on the horizon, you can apply what you’ve learned to your indoor plants as well.

The sky is a celestial clock, with the Sun and the Moon as the “hands” that tell the time. The Sun tells the season, and the light and location of the Moon tell the best times for birth, growth, and death in the garden. The Moon doesn’t generate any light by itself, but as it circles the Earth it reflects the light of the Sun, which makes the Moon look like it’s getting bigger and smaller. The cyclical increases and decreases in the light of the Moon are phases and tell times of growth.

Moon Phases

The theory behind gardening by the Moon is “as the Moon goes, so goes the garden.” The Earth circles around the Sun once a year, but the Moon has a much shorter “life span” of twenty-eight to thirty days. Every month, as the light of the Moon increases and decreases, it mirrors the cycle of birth, growth, and death in the garden. After adjusting your garden activities to the light of the Moon, you’ll be amazed to see how well your garden grows.

The waxing phase is the growth cycle in the garden. It begins with the New Moon and lasts for two weeks. Each month the Moon is “born” at the New Moon (day one) and grows bigger and brighter until it reaches maturity at the Full Moon (day fourteen). When the light of the Moon is increasing, it’s the best time of the month to sow seeds, plant leafy annuals, and cut back or prune plants to encourage bigger growth.

The waning phase is the declining cycle in the garden. It begins with the Full Moon (day fourteen) and lasts for two weeks. The Moon grows older after the Full Moon as the light begins to decrease, until it disappears or “dies” at day twenty-eight. The decreasing light of the Moon is the time to plant bulbs, root vegetables, and perennials that store their energy underground. The

Moon Sign Book 63

waning Moon phase is also a good time for garden maintenance, including weeding, raking, deadheading, mowing, working the soil, destroying insects, and burning brush.

How can you tell if the Moon is waxing or waning?

Cup your right hand into a C shape and look up into the sky. If the crescent Moon fits into the closed part of your right hand, it’s a waxing Moon.

Cup your left hand into a C shape and look up into the sky. If the crescent Moon fits into the closed part of your left hand, it’s a waning Moon.

New Moon and Full Moon

Every month, the Moon takes one day off. This time-out between waning and waxing is called the New Moon. The time-out between waxing and waning is called the Full Moon. When the Moon reaches either of these stopping points, it’s time for you to follow its example and take a one-day break from the garden.

Moon Signs

Once you know the Moon phases, the next step is to locate where the Moon is in the zodiac. The Moon hangs out in each of the zodiac signs for two to three days per month.

There’s no such thing as a “bad” time in the garden, but there are Moon signs that are better for growth and others that are better for digging and weeding. Growth times alternate every two to three days with maintenance times. The trick is knowing which one is which.

The grow signs are Taurus, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. When the Moon is in these signs, it’s time to seed and plant.

The no-grow/maintenance signs are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. When the Moon is in these signs, it’s time for digging, weeding, mowing, and pruning.

Remember: It’s always a good time to garden something!

Putting It All Together

In order to get started, you’ll need three tools: a calendar with New and Full Moons, the Moon tables (page 136), and the Moon phases and signs below.

Then follow these simple steps:

1. Mark your calendar with your time frame for gardening.

2. Figure out when the Moon is waxing (1st and 2nd quarters) and waning (3rd and 4th quarters). Use the tables in the Weekly Almanac section.

3. Locate the Moon by zodiac sign.

4. Check out the gardening advice below, which takes into account the Moon’s phase and sign.

Moon Phases and Signs

Note: Can be applied to any calendar year.

Waxing Aries Moon (October–April)

Aries is one of the three fire signs that is hot and barren. Seeds planted under a waxing Aries Moon tend to be bitter or bolt quickly, but if you’re feeling lucky, you could try your hand at hot and spicy peppers or herbs that thrive in dry heat.

Waning Aries Moon (April–October)

The decreasing light of the waning Aries Moon makes these two to three days a good time to focus on harvesting, cutting back, mowing the lawn, and getting rid of pests.

Waxing Taurus Moon (November–May)

Taurus is one of the three semi-fruitful earth signs. These days are perfect ones to establish your garden by planting or fertilizing annuals. Annuals with outside seeds like lettuces, cabbage, corn, and broccoli grow faster when planted under a waxing Taurus Moon that is one to seven days old. Vegetables with inside seeds like cucumbers, melons, squash, tomatoes, and beans should be

Last Aspect Moon Enters New Sign

The Moon’s Rhythm

The Moon journeys around Earth in an elliptical orbit that takes about 27.33 days, which is known as a sidereal month (period of revolution of one body about another). She can move up to 15 degrees or as few as 11 degrees in a day, with the fastest motion occurring when the Moon is at perigee (closest approach to Earth). The Moon is never retrograde, but when her motion is slow, the effect is similar to a retrograde period.

Astrologers have observed that people born on a day when the Moon is fast will process information differently from those who are born when the Moon is slow in motion. People born when the Moon is fast process information quickly and tend to react quickly, while those born during a slow Moon will be more deliberate.

The time from New Moon to New Moon is called the synodic month (involving a conjunction), and the average time span

Moon Sign Book 83

between this Sun-Moon alignment is 29.53 days. Since 29.53 won’t divide into 365 evenly, we can have a month with two Full Moons or two New Moons.

Moon Aspects

The aspects the Moon will make during the times you are considering are also important. A trine or sextile, and sometimes a conjunction, are considered favorable aspects. A trine or sextile between the Sun and Moon is an excellent foundation for success. Whether or not a conjunction is considered favorable depends upon the planet the Moon is making a conjunction to. If it’s joining the Sun, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, or even Saturn, the aspect is favorable. If the Moon joins Pluto or Mars, however, that would not be considered favorable. There may be exceptions, but it would depend on what you are electing to do. For example, a trine to Pluto might hasten the end of a relationship you want to be free of.

It is important to avoid times when the Moon makes an aspect to or is conjoining any retrograde planet, unless, of course, you want the thing started to end in failure.

After the Moon has completed an aspect to a planet, that planetary energy has passed. For example, if the Moon squares Saturn at 10:00 am, you can disregard Saturn’s influence on your activity if it will occur after that time. You should always look ahead at aspects the Moon will make on the day in question, though, because if the Moon opposes Mars at 11:30 pm on that day, you can expect events that stretch into the evening to be affected by the Moon-Mars aspect. A testy conversation might lead to an argument, or more.

Moon Signs

Much agricultural work is ruled by earth signs—Virgo, Capricorn, and Taurus. The air signs—Gemini, Aquarius, and Libra—rule flying and intellectual pursuits.

84 The Moon’s Rhythm

Each planet has one or two signs in which its characteristics are enhanced or “dignified,” and the planet is said to “rule” that sign. The Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer, for example. The ruling planet for each sign is listed below. These should not be considered complete lists. We recommend that you purchase a book of planetary rulerships for more complete information.

Aries Moon

The energy of an Aries Moon is masculine, dry, barren, and fiery. Aries provides great start-up energy, but things started at this time may be the result of impulsive action that lacks research or necessary support. Aries lacks staying power.

Use this assertive, outgoing Moon sign to initiate change, but have a plan in place for someone to pick up the reins when you’re impatient to move on to the next thing. Work that requires skillful but not necessarily patient use of tools—cutting down trees, hammering, etc.—is appropriate in Aries. Expect things to occur rapidly but to also quickly pass. If you are prone to injury or accidents, exercise caution and good judgment in Aries-related activities.

Ruler: Mars

Impulse: Action

Rules: Head and face

Taurus Moon

A Taurus Moon’s energy is feminine, semi-fruitful, and earthy. The Moon is exalted—very strong—in Taurus. Taurus is known as the farmer’s sign because of its associations with farmland and precipitation that is the typical day-long “soaker” variety. Taurus energy is good to incorporate into your plans when patience, practicality, and perseverance are needed. Be aware, though, that you may also experience stubbornness in this sign.

Things started in Taurus tend to be long lasting and to increase in value. This can be very supportive energy in a marriage election. On the downside, the fixed energy of this sign resists change

Moon Sign Book 85 or the letting go of even the most difficult situations. A divorce following a marriage that occurred during a Taurus Moon may be difficult and costly to end. Things begun now tend to become habitual and hard to alter. If you want to make changes in something you started, it would be better to wait for Gemini. This is a good time to get a loan, but expect the people in charge of money to be cautious and slow to make decisions.

Ruler: Venus

Impulse: Stability

Rules: Neck, throat, and voice

Gemini Moon

A Gemini Moon’s energy is masculine, dry, barren, and airy. People are more changeable than usual and may prefer to follow intellectual pursuits and play mental games rather than apply themselves to practical concerns.

This sign is not favored for agricultural matters, but it is an excellent time to prepare for activities, to run errands, and write letters. Plan to use a Gemini Moon to exchange ideas, meet people, go on vacations that include walking or biking, or be in situations that require versatility and quick thinking on your feet.

Ruler: Mercury

Impulse: Versatility

Rules: Shoulders, hands, arms, lungs, and nervous system

Cancer Moon

A Cancer Moon’s energy is feminine, fruitful, moist, and very strong. Use this sign when you want to grow things—flowers, fruits, vegetables, commodities, stocks, or collections—for example. This sensitive sign stimulates rapport between people. Considered the most fertile of the signs, it is often associated with mothering. You can use this moontime to build personal friendships that support mutual growth.

More About Zodiac Signs

Element (Triplicity)

Each of the zodiac signs is classified as belonging to an element; these are the four basic elements:

Fire Signs

Aries, Sagittarius, and Leo are action-oriented, outgoing, energetic, and spontaneous.

Earth Signs

Taurus, Capricorn, and Virgo are stable, conservative, practical, and oriented to the physical and material realm.

Air Signs

Gemini, Aquarius, and Libra are sociable and critical, and they tend to represent intellectual responses rather than feelings.

Water Signs

Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are emotional, receptive, intuitive, and can be very sensitive.

Quality (Quadruplicity)

Each zodiac sign is further classified as being cardinal, mutable, or fixed. There are four signs in each quadruplicity, one sign from each element.

Cardinal Signs

Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn represent beginnings and newly initiated action. They initiate each new season in the cycle of the year.

Fixed Signs

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius want to maintain the status quo through stubbornness and persistence; they represent that “between” time. For example, Leo is the month when summer really feels like summer.

Mutable Signs

Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius adapt to change and tolerate situations. They represent the last month of each season, when things are changing in preparation for the coming season.

Nature and Fertility

In addition to a sign’s element and quality, each sign is further classified as either fruitful, semi-fruitful, or barren. This classification is the most important for readers who use the gardening information in the Moon Sign Book because the timing of most events depends on the fertility of the sign occupied by the Moon. The water signs of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are the most fruitful. The semi-fruitful signs are the earth signs Taurus and Capricorn, and the air sign Libra. The barren signs correspond to fire signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius; air signs Gemini and Aquarius; and earth sign Virgo.

Good Timing

Electional astrology is the art of electing times to begin any undertaking. Say, for example, you want to start a business. That business will experience ups and downs, as well as reach its potential, according to the promise held in the universe at the time the business was started—its birth time. The horoscope (birth chart) set for the date, time, and place that a business starts would indicate the outcome—its potential to succeed.

So, you might ask yourself the question: If the horoscope for a business start can show success or failure, why not begin at a time that is more favorable to the venture? Well, you can.

While no time is perfect, there are better times and better days to undertake specific activities. There are thousands of examples that prove electional astrology is not only practical, but that it can make a

difference in our lives. There are rules for electing times to begin various activities—even shopping. You’ll find detailed instructions about how to make elections beginning on page 107.

Personalizing Elections

The election rules in this almanac are based upon the planetary positions at the time for which the election is made. They do not depend on any type of birth chart. However, a birth chart based upon the time, date, and birthplace of an event has advantages. No election is effective for every person. For example, you may leave home to begin a trip at the same time as a friend, but each of you will have a different experience according to whether or not your birth chart favors the trip.

Not all elections require a birth chart, but the timing of very important events—business starts, marriages, etc.—would benefit from the additional accuracy a birth chart provides. To order a birth chart for yourself or a planned event, visit our website at www.llewellyn.com.

Some Things to Consider

You’ve probably experienced good timing in your life. Maybe you were at the right place at the right time to meet a friend whom you hadn’t seen in years. Frequently, when something like that happens, it is the result of following an intuitive impulse—that “gut instinct.”

Consider for a moment that you were actually responding to planetary energies. Electional astrology is a tool that can help you to align with energies, present and future, that are available to us through planetary placements.

Significators

Decide upon the important significators (planet, sign, and house ruling the matter) for which the election is being made. The Moon is the most important significator in any election, so the Moon should always be fortified (strong by sign and making favorable aspects to

other planets). The Moon’s aspects to other planets are more important than the sign the Moon is in.

Other important considerations are the significators of the Ascendant and Midheaven—the house ruling the election matter and the ruler of the sign on that house cusp. Finally, any planet or sign that has a general rulership over the matter in question should be taken into consideration.

Nature and Fertility

Determine the general nature of the sign that is appropriate for your election. For example, much agricultural work is ruled by the earth signs of Virgo, Capricorn, and Taurus; while the air signs—Gemini, Aquarius, and Libra—rule intellectual pursuits.

One Final Comment

Use common sense. If you must do something, like plant your garden or take an airplane trip on a day that doesn’t have the best aspects, proceed anyway, but try to minimize problems. For example, leave early for the airport to avoid being left behind due to delays in the security lanes. When you have no other choice, do the best that you can under the circumstances at the time.

If you want to personalize your elections, please turn to page 107 for more information. If you want a quick and easy answer, you can refer to Llewellyn’s Astro Almanac on the following pages.

Weather Forecasting

Astrological weather forecasting dates back thousands of years and still uses the same basic techniques as in its earliest days.

The Signs

There’s a range of different methods, but the most important factor is always the Moon because it signifies change. Simply looking at when the Moon changes zodiac signs gives clues about the state of the weather while the Moon is in that sign. Each sign describes basic weather conditions.

Aries: Hot and dry. Although it isn’t too windy, it causes some air motion.

Taurus: Mild, calm, and moderate with still air.

Gemini: Cool and fluctuating temperatures, and a very windy sign.

Cancer: Mildly cold and tends to see steady rain.

Moon Sign Book 167

Leo: The hottest sign with little air movement and tends to dryness.

Virgo: Dry and chilly with winds that clear the air.

Libra: Cool and mild with refreshing breezes.

Scorpio: Makes conditions more extreme and can indicate heavy rain.

Sagittarius: Warm and fair with clear skies.

Capricorn: Cold, wet, and damp, and worsens existing weather.

Aquarius: The coldest sign and shows drastic drops in temperature.

Pisces: Cool rather than cold and tends toward calm weather.

So when the Moon moves into Virgo, for example, you can expect the weather to be cooler than it was previously. Obviously, you also need to take into account the expected weather for the area and the season. A drop in temperature in summer can feel very different to a drop in temperature during an already-cold winter.

The Planets

But this is only very basic information, and for more detail it’s necessary to look at what else is going on. That involves looking at the signs the planets are in and their relationships. Each planet is associated with a type of weather as below.

The Sun is mainly a trigger for other planetary configurations, though it also shows warm, sunny, and calm periods when it’s prominent in a chart. When it’s conjunct another planet, it shows extremes in whatever that planet signifies.

Though the Moon’s effects are short-lived, it triggers other planetary combinations, especially in terms of increasing wet weather.

Mercury brings wind and can have a cooling effect. When it’s retrograde, it can mean rain.

168 Weather Forecasting

Venus has a calming influence and signals warm and pleasant weather, though she also brings rain.

Mars brings extreme heat and turbulence and can generate storms.

Jupiter suggests fair weather but also thick white clouds, and it can raise temperatures.

Saturn is associated with cold and damp and suggests dark clouds and heavy rain.

Uranus shows sudden change and is often involved in extreme conditions, such as thunderstorms and hurricanes.

Neptune is a wet planet. It increases humidity and often indicates fog or mist.

Pluto tends to be cold and may bring hail or sleet. It sometimes acts like Mars.

Planetary Relationships

The planets bring change and adjust the meaning of the sign they’re in. For example, Gemini is associated with cool temperatures and wind. If Mercury is in Gemini, it can be very windy. And if Jupiter is also opposite Mercury, that raises the temperature so the winds don’t blow too cold.

When two planets connect that have different natures, they create different effects depending on the signs involved. For example, Mars indicates hot weather. When it’s next to Saturn— cold, wet, and gloomy—two weather fronts meet. If that happens in Scorpio, which indicates extremes, it suggests a powerful storm. However, if it happens in Taurus, which is mild and calm, it’s more likely to cause uncomfortable hot and humid air.

For a long-term view, the planetary combinations for when the Sun enters Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn (the solstices and equinoxes) describe the general weather for the season, especially in terms of temperature.

As the Moon acts as a trigger and brings out the energies of the planets, the planetary combinations for when the Moon enters a new phase describe the weather for that week. This is particularly useful when it comes to forecasting rain or storms.

Because the Moon moves so fast, the connections she makes to the other planets are fleeting and usually ignored. However, if you want to look closely at a particular day, lunar aspects to planets can be very useful.

It isn’t essential to cast a chart to make an astrological weather forecast, but doing so makes it easier to predict the weather for a specified location and provides more detail. As well as casting a chart for the season or week, a chart can be cast for sunrise to forecast the weather for a particular day.

Whatever astrological method is used to predict the weather, the most important factor is always the Moon because it signifies change.

Weather Forecast for 2026

Winter

Zone 1 will see a wet winter with regular rainfall, though there will also be short spells of fine weather. It will be warmer than usual for the season, and occasional mist or fog is also likely. In Zone 2, there will be more rain than usual but also plenty of brighter moments, and the dry days will be surprisingly warm. Zone 3 will be prone to sudden changes in the temperature as well as sudden gusts of wind, although these will be short-lived. The skies will usually be clear, meaning many frosty mornings. Brief showers are much more likely than sustained rainfall.

Zone 4 will have very cold mornings and nights, though little rain. And what rain there is will be brief. Short-lived snowstorms are likely, and drops in the temperature can be severe and fast. In Zone 5, it will be wetter than usual, with increasing rainfall as the winter goes on. Zone 6 will have extremely changeable weather, with occasional high winds. Rain will be infrequent and usually

Moon Sign Book 171

short-lived. A warm winter is likely for Zone 7, along with some sunshiny days, although the weather will be very changeable and there will be sudden drops in the temperature. Alaska’s weather will be seasonal, although windy. Hawaii will enjoy a warm winter with light rainfall.

2nd Quarter December 27, 2025–January 2, 2026

Zone 1: Warmer than seasonal, with some breezy, sunshiny days. Occasional and sudden rain is likely, although this will be shortlived.

Zone 2: Very changeable, though generally mild in temperature with occasional rain or snow.

Zone 3: Frequent pleasantly warm periods, with gentle winds. Some rain is possible, as are mild and brief storms.

Zone 4: The temperature is cool, dropping to cold, especially at night. A lack of wind means it feels warmer than expected.

Zone 5: The temperature fluctuates a lot, and there are occasional heavy showers. Very windy, which dissipates early morning fog and haze.

Zone 6: Very changeable, although mainly mild in temperature. Rain is likely at the end of the week.

Zone 7: Very windy with some stormy weather and the possibility of rain, although mostly dry.

Zone 8: Alaska will experience cloudy weather, and it will be very windy. A sudden drop in the temperature means Hawaii is colder than seasonal, although it’s mainly calm with little wind.

Full Moon January 3–9

Zone 1: Fair and temperate weather, mainly dry and warmer than seasonal.

Zone 2: A drop in the temperature and damp, gloomy days with clouds. Some heavy rain and fog in the mornings.

Zone 3: Very changeable. Mainly dry with lightning followed by rain, though not heavy downfalls. The temperature is warmer than seasonal.

Economic Forecast for 2026

Asolar eclipse is not unusual: there are at least two solar eclipses in any year, and most are accompanied by a lunar eclipse at the Full Moon either two weeks before or after the solar event. Very occasionally there will be two lunar eclipses with a solar halfway between them.

Each solar eclipse belongs to a series that can be traced back— sometimes over centuries. The first solar eclipse in 2026 takes place on February 17 in Aquarius and will only be visible in Antarctica. It is the sixty-first of seventy-one solar eclipses that make up the cycle known as Saros 121. The first in that series occurred in April of 944 CE.

The chart for the first eclipse in any Saros Cycle yields clues as to the type of events that might be initiated as the series progresses. On April 25, 944 CE, Venus (ruler of this Taurus eclipse)

210 Economic Forecast for 2026

was in exact opposition with Mars: an aspect that implies division, comparison, and competition. Moreover, Saturn was at 0° Cancer. This is a powerful degree in that it marks a solstice point and one of the four degrees marking the world axis. Cancer is the sign associated with home and property and Saturn with protection, security, and regulation.

The sixtieth eclipse of this cycle took place on February 7, 2008, when Pluto was crossing 0° Capricorn and the financial world teetered on the verge of collapse: a state of affairs that was largely caused by inappropriate home loan lending. This accent on property ownership and regulation echoed the themes of the first eclipse in the series.

Confirming the probability of similar themes playing in 2026, the fifty-ninth eclipse of the series took place in late January 1990. Jupiter was at 2° Cancer, and Chiron opposed Neptune across the Cancer-Capricorn axis. The world was adjusting to the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 1989) and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Fresh borders were drawn, and the financial world adjusted to the loss of the East German currency.

If a variation on these themes plays out in 2026, the global financial world will be challenged. The chart for the accompanying lunar eclipse on March 3 finds Mercury, Venus, and Mars with the Sun and lunar node in Pisces opposing the Moon in Virgo. Whilst this is not an exact repetition of the lunar eclipse that coincided with the fall of Lehman Brothers, there are enough matching characteristics to suggest market turmoil. It is noteworthy that whenever there is a dominance of planets in mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces), markets tend to turn downward.

Between the February solar eclipse and the lunar eclipse in early March, both Saturn and Neptune move toward a conjunction at 0° Aries (the world axis). These ingresses are likely to coincide with events that leave a lasting legacy.

Moon Sign Book 211

Correlation between significant economic activity and a planet moving from one sign to another is not hard to find: the most obvious example being Pluto’s Capricorn ingress in 2008, an ingress that took place less than a month from a Saros 121 eclipse.

Capricorn is the sign associated with corporations and banking, and Pluto has a justified reputation for bringing “death and rebirth.” This ingress coincided with various cycles reaching critical phase—the combined planetary pressures leading to the global financial crash or crisis.

Research shows that the slower moving the planet, the greater the effect on global finance (i.e., the less frequent the event, the more likely it is that there will be financial drama as investors and traders alike deal with unfamiliar conditions).

In 2024, and as viewed from Earth, Pluto made its final ingress into Aquarius (it crossed the apparent boundary between Capricorn and Aquarius on three occasions owing to retrograde periods) and will not return to Capricorn for over two centuries. No human alive today will live through another Pluto-in-Capricorn experience, nor will they experience another Pluto-Aquarius ingress. You would need to go back several generations to find an ancestor whose financial challenges addressed similar themes to those of 2024–2026.

The recent Aquarius ingress coincided with gathering momentum in artificial intelligence and the use of digital currencies. Keywords associated with Aquarius (one of the air signs) include “cutting edge,” “technology,” “space engineering,” and “scientific manufacturing.” Pluto last made Aquarius ingress in the late eighteenth century. The challenge then was not the dawn of an artificial intelligence age but an industrial revolution that required major rethinking of working practices—as does the present age of Pluto in Aquarius.

As Pluto made Aquarius ingress in 2024, financial markets experienced turbulence: soaring with the swell of promise of

New and Full Moon Forecasts for 2026

We are more than a quarter through the twenty-first century, and this year brings good news for water and fire signs, with generous Jupiter swooping through Cancer and Leo. Saturn enters Aries in mid-February, which marks a new astrological era for nearly three years. (Aries, as the first sign of the zodiac, begins chapters.) In a general sense, 2026 will bear some similarities to 1937–1940 and 1996–1999, the last times the ringed giant moved through the sign of the ram. From a North American perspective, those earlier eras preceded lengthy periods of war (WWII and Afghanistan/Iraq), which followed once Saturn moved into more businesslike Taurus.

But this story is all about the Moon, our nearest neighbor—the inspiration for poets throughout millennia as well as astronomers.

Moon Sign Book 229

The Moon is how sailors find adventure—and go home. She is the great director of the Earth’s tidal rhythms and an endless source of fascination for everyone.

When I teach tarot classes, I urge students to pay special attention to card eighteen, the Moon. Pamela Colman Smith’s original design shows a dog and a wolf baying at the Moon, with a small pond behind them and two towers in front of them. Smith’s image suggests the dual nature of us all—the tame creature living alongside the wild creature. Or as Mark Twain is credited as writing, “Every one is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody” (Following the Equator 1898).

Lunar Phases

This piece focuses on New and Full Moons, but remember, fourteen or so days lie between those lunar high points. Be aware of your own moods and interests—and those of others. Some folks are at their best during the Full Moon (they may have been born during this period); others are more comfortable during the time of the New Moon. Still others may find that the time of the second or fourth quarter coincides with their personal rhythms.

New Moon to Second Quarter Moon

You’ll see: The Moon is a thin silver sliver, oriented with “horns” to the left. The shadow of the Moon gradually diminishes during this phase.

What to do: Fresh start, slow expansion, tentative growth.

The Second Quarter to Full Moon

You’ll see: The Earth’s shadow (on the left) gradually disappears so that the Moon appears to “smile” as it moves toward the incandescent Full Moon.

What to do: Accelerate, move more quickly, shift gears (for higher speed!).

230 New and Full Moon Forecasts for 2026

The Full Moon to the Fourth Quarter

You’ll see: The shadow of the Earth can be seen on the right side of the Moon, gradually diminishing our view. Projects begun at the New Moon may undergo another development. What to do: Projects and relationships may hit a slow period or even stall just before the fourth quarter Moon. This is a time of reflection and changing direction.

The Fourth Quarter to the Dark of the Moon

You’ll see: Earth’s shadow slowly “consumes” the Full Moon from right to left. The fourth quarter Moon and days after always remind me of the Cheshire Cat’s inimitable grin in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland . Now you see him—now you don’t. The “dark” period is the day before the New Moon. What to do: Clear your desk, clear your mind, tidy, and declutter. New projects that come along before the New Moon could be valid—but you’ll know for sure after the New Moon.

The New and Full Moons at a Glance

For each entry, you’ll find that all signs are mentioned, as well as suggestions for best activities or actions to avoid. Remember that the New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, and the Full Moon is in the opposite sign. As the year begins: Sun in Capricorn, Full Moon in Cancer; Sun in Aquarius, Full Moon in Leo; Sun in Pisces, Full Moon in Virgo; Sun in Aries, Full Moon in Libra; Sun in Taurus, Full Moon in Scorpio; Sun in Gemini, Full Moon in Sagittarius; Sun in Cancer, Full Moon in Capricorn; Sun in Leo, Full Moon in Aquarius; Sun in Virgo, Full Moon in Pisces; Sun in Libra, Full Moon in Aries; Sun in Scorpio, Full Moon in Taurus; Sun in Sagittarius, Full Moon in Gemini; Sun in Capricorn, Full Moon in Cancer.

Saturday, January 3, Full Moon in Cancer

This watery Full Moon starts the year in harmony with Jupiter, which prompts generosity. However, Mars is opposing that

Moon Sign Book 231 planet, so a gesture meant kindly could be misinterpreted. Cancer Moons oversee baking, massage, and working with clay—keep your fingers busy! Cancer: you’re at an emotional peak, and since Jupiter (planet of generosity) continues to do-si-do in your Sun sign, bringing good fortune, ask for what you need. Loudly! Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, and Pisces: getting at the truth is worth the time. Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius, Sagittarius, and Aries: do not feel responsible for others’ happiness or well-being. Focus on yourself, first and last.

Sunday, January 25, New Moon in Capricorn

This New Moon has excellent lunar aspects for starting a project that will take a long time or looking at a project that will require belt-tightening. Capricorn Moons influence building, construction, and structures. Capricorn: this is a useful and surprising time because you can leap over obstacles with little effort. Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus, and Virgo: make time for your “fanciful” and creative side; others look to you for a different perspective, and you’ll delight yourselves during this lunar phase. Cancer, Gemini, Leo, Libra, and Aries: it will be easy to stick your foot in your mouth, either in verbal or written form. Double-check those hasty text messages.

Sunday, February 1, Full Moon in Leo

A strong yearning for connection prevails for all, thanks to the first fire sign Full Moon of the year. Leo Moons also signal a fine time for a haircut or spending time with children. It’s an excellent time for an impromptu get together, and if you ever thought about going into “children’s entertainment” (writing books, designing toys, or planning parties), the stars align for this. Leo: as much as you resist “change” (occupation, activities, domicile), the planets say, “This is the right time,” and the Moon will help you with the angst that comes with transition. Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aries: feelings of neediness may

232 New and Full Moon Forecasts for 2026

surprise or dismay you. Keep moving! Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio, Pisces, and Capricorn: others may want to rush you. Resist!

Tuesday, February 17, New Moon in Aquarius

Mercury is retrograde from February 26 through March 20. Wheeling and dealing is the theme with this New Moon, as is asking a lot of questions (you may not get answers to everything, but you’ll get plenty!). Aquarius rules electricity, trends, and humanitarian movements. As Mars continues moving through Aquarius, you may hear questions you weren’t expecting. Being prepared is difficult during Aquarian lunar phases because imagination is the theme. Aquarius: you get what you want—and the transiting Moon suggests you may actually know what you want this time! Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces, Aries, Gemini, and Libra: you’re an excellent communicator right now; just make sure you’re not saying one thing and then saying the opposite moments later. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Virgo, and Cancer: if others are noncommittal and you are looking for positive action, expect frustration until the Moon shifts signs.

Tuesday, March 3, Full Moon in Virgo

Our first earth sign Full Moon is superb for handling money matters or getting another perspective on your health. Virgo Moons are excellent for looking after our health or trying a new vitamin supplement (or heck, just getting a salad instead of the entrée coated in cheese and breadcrumbs). With Mars opposing the Moon, unexpected frankness or impulse control could bedevil some folks. Virgo: the unexpected “ask” could actually be a blessing. Remember that Emerson said, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” (“Self-Reliance,” 1907). Embrace the surprising. Taurus, Capricorn, Cancer, Leo, Libra, and Scorpio: take all the time you need and be confident about your views, which may be at odds with those of the zeitgeist. Pisces, Gemini, Sagittarius, Aries, and Aquarius: mild irritation could enlarge into

The Power of Harnessing Moon Energy

The flowing phases of lunar cycles provide an energetic opening for you to pause, reflect, and connect with the larger spiritual purpose of your life. Harnessing lunar energy is a powerful practice in discovering your connection to the world around you. Each Moon phase offers a unique opportunity for manifestation and self-examination of ourselves and the communities we’re a part of. The greatest times of unified Moon cycle observation occur during the New Moon and Full Moon cycles—providing energetic pulls and gentle nudges for us to listen to our intuition. Throughout this text, the phrase the Collective refers to the unified spiritual body of humans on this Earth. We each occupy this unified spiritual system through our individual energy systems. Your energy system is a current of power, an aura, flowing through

Moon Sign Book 245 and around you—connecting yourself and others to the transformational lunar power of the Moon.

Phases of the Moon

Think of each phase as a path toward rebirth, with the New Moon being an initial seed for reflection and the waning crescent as the last cycle of release before a new season of renewal. The Moon’s magnetic power over our internal and external water bodies connects us both energetically and biologically with each Moon phase shift. In approximately four-day intervals, the Moon shifts through each phase with the rotation of our solar system—connecting each of us to the transformative power of eight major Moon cycles.

The New Moon

New Moons are a time of planting seeds, an opportunity to prepare the soil through hard work and dedication as we move toward the energy of the Full Moon phase in two weeks. New Moons serve as an energetic opening for the Collective to consider the path ahead. See this phase of the Moon as a fresh start, a moment to step into the newness and expansion of possibility. This is the time to dream big, letting your energetic system soar.

New Moon Journal Prompts

• Over the past two weeks, which areas of your life have needed more support?

• How can you shift your energy toward renewal?

The Waxing Crescent

The waxing crescent presents an opportunity for you to lock in on personal goals. This energy of possibility exists from the collective energy gained during the New Moon phase, but action is equally required during this phase to carry the momentum forward. This phase is about stepping outside your comfort zone and leveraging the new experiences and opportunities in front of you.

246

Waxing Crescent Moon Journal Prompts

• How are you stepping outside your comfort zone, and who are you bringing with you?

• What is required in this season to move you to the next phase of understanding and connection?

The Second Quarter Moon

The second quarter Moon represents a crossroads in our logic, a moment to break through barriers and step into uncharted territory. It’s a moment of self-reflection before the harvest, a rumbling moment of quiet and doubt before taking a new road. It’s the time to look in the mirror and say, “What will I do?” This is a time to review your potential. Ask for your eyes to recognize the path ahead. Have the courage to stand tall.

Second Quarter Moon Journal Prompts

• Are you ready to move forward into the new, or is there more personal work to be done before you’re ready?

• Do you see what you’re capable of, or are you shying away from your true self?

The Waxing Gibbous

The waxing gibbous is a Moon phase of making active change toward the goals and intentions you set at the New Moon phase. During this time, envision yourself celebrating your hard work and achievements. Reflect on the growth and spiritual messages received during self-meditation and experience new levels of momentum and energy by staying focused and steady until the goal at hand is accomplished.

Waxing Gibbous Moon Journal Prompts

• What action steps do I need to refine and reshape to reach my goals?

• What distractions do I need to eliminate in my life to recenter my original intentions?

The Full Moon

Full Moons are a spiritual time of harvest and celebration, a culmination of the hard work and intentions set at the previous New Moon. This time of heightened Moon energy amplifies manifestations and intentions set during the preceding New Moon phase, enhancing the potential for personal growth and transformation. Harness this celebratory energy by drawing in those you love, channeling the energy of Collective unity as we all move toward new stages of growth.

Full Moon Journal Prompts

• What were my most notable victories since the previous New Moon?

• How have I grown over the last few Moon phases?

The Waning Gibbous

As the high-vibrating rhythms of the Moon subside, our energetic systems feel a collective release, calling us to rest. If you find yourself at a place of judgment during this phase, pause to acknowledge and give yourself credit for your accomplishments. Whether it be improving your personal health, work and business

endeavors, romantic life, or family relations—each area of life will be up for evaluation during this cycle. Improving your life can be done without minimizing your accomplishments. Find beauty in the lessons learned as you progress through this moon cycle.

Waning Gibbous Moon Journal Prompts

• What areas of my life require more rest?

• Where can I ask for more support in my life?

The Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter Moon provides another decision point during the Moon phase cycle. It calls many to question, “What’s next?” Harnessing this energy is about leveraging inner growth with the resources you have in front of you. Release moments of judgment on yourself and others and forgive yourself for previous mistakes made.

Fourth Quarter Moon Journal Prompts

• Are you fully ready to release what’s limiting you at this time?

• Are you prepared to fully step into what you’re being called to?

The Waning Crescent

At this point, we are brought to the edge of a new beginning, evaluating, reflecting, and preparing for the next discoveries and developments our spirits are being called to. This is often a time of heightened readiness for new discipline, feeling a pulse of excitement as we step into the new.

Waning Crescent Moon Journal Prompts

• What have I discovered in this moment that has rebirthed my spirit?

• Affirm: “I am conscious, capable, and ready for new outcomes in my life.” What new outcomes are you ready for in your life at this time?

Qualities and Elements

Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) draw in self-starting energies, while the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) lead to fierce determination. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) bring ease to each Moon cycle, encouraging us as a Collective to bring more ease into our decision-making and go with the flow.

This repeating pattern within the zodiac cycle of cardinal, fixed, and mutable is a spiritual guide for the energy we can build our lives, relationships, spiritual practices, and major decisionmaking around, building with the swell of zodiac Moon power rather than working against it.

During each Moon cycle, these are some of the general feelings and experiences you can expect.

Fire Signs

• Aries, cardinal, Emperor (tarot), ruled by Mars: Expect a surge of creativity and passion, pushing you beyond your limits.

• Leo, fixed, Strength (tarot), ruled by the Sun: You might feel a surge of creative energy, increased self-confidence, and a desire to take the initiative in various areas of life.

• Sagittarius, mutable, Temperance (tarot), ruled by Jupiter: Expect an increase in self-reflection, personal growth, and the unveiling of truths.

Air Signs

• Gemini, mutable, Lovers (tarot), ruled by Mercury: You may experience bursts of creativity and the ability to convey your ideas clearly, fostering connections and social interactions.

• Libra, cardinal, Justice (tarot), ruled by Venus: You may feel the need to balance life priorities, maintain harmony in relationships, and reduce mental load.

• Aquarius, fixed, Star (tarot), ruled by Uranus: You may experience a desire to reform habits, initiate inner dialogue, and foster community connections, enhancing your social and intellectual engagements.

Water Signs

• Cancer, cardinal, Chariot (tarot), ruled by the Moon: You may find yourself more in tune with your emotions and focused on creating balance in your personal life.

• Scorpio, fixed, Death (tarot), ruled by Pluto: You are encouraged to embrace transformation and stand firm in your ideals.

• Pisces, mutable, Moon (tarot), ruled by Neptune: You may experience heightened sensitivity, increased intuition, and a need for privacy.

Through each Moon phase, our spiritual guides offer us opportunities to release the ego-driven, perfectionist aspects of our human experience, allowing us to tap into a flow state with each phase of the Moon cycle.

As an individual spiritual practitioner, you can use Moon cycles to connect with your deepest desires and spiritual questions.

Whether you engage in a daily or major New Moon through Full Moon observation, each Moon phase provides a spiritual offering for you to experience more, live more vibrantly, and be more connected than you could have previously imagined.

As your personal lunar observation and channeling practices are developed over time, you’ll find deeper connections with the nature and the people around you.
