TOPICS regenerative design adaptive reuse

SYNOPSIS Incorporating housing for high-functioning individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), regenerative design, and a data center, 2200 Grand Avenue approaches the Des Moines site with integration and inclusion in mind.

Organized around three central nodes along the current column grid, a the data center penetrates through the central node to serve as an art piece. The building utilizes the “public-private,� offering privatized spaces in public setting. The lower level includes a cafe and wellness studio.

The first level includes a game room, offices, library, and community kitchen. The second level hosts the residents living with ASD, as well as private and resident-focused spaces. The addition, an extension of the column grid, seeks to stand as a modern addition, while keeping the integrity of the original building.

Existing construction (orange) paired with new construction (blue). While the exisitng building is made of brick, the addition is a complementary modern addition to provide a structured space with plenty of natural daylighting and views to the forested backyard.

Whole-building section of 2200 Grand. Heat and water recycling, solar shading, solar energy, and connection to the public and to nature are utilized elements that relate to the Living Building Challenge, a regenerative design standard.

What if time spent anxiously driving to a doctor’s appointment and waiting in a lobby full of other patients was instead an experience that could calm, relax, and connect mothers, fathers, and children together?

Targeting new parents and their babies, the wellAV provides an escape from worrisome and anxiety-inducing waiting spaces. Utilitzing biofeedback and autonomy, we are able to provide a space in place of a waiting room for users to foster calmness, composure, and metal agility.

Biofeedback sensors throughout the wellAV measure the heart rate, perspiration levels, temperature, and respiratory rate of the user and adapt to provide an environment that will help to stregthen the user’s mental agility.

INFORMATION Summer 2019-2020 Corgan Data Centers Blue

SYNOPSIS project work created for Corgan and the Data Centers Blue team

During two summer internships with Corgan, I was tasked by my project teams to create renderings for data center projects. Modeling with Revit, rendering with Enscape, and post-rendering in Photoshop, each view carefully curates the space to give the clients as much information as possible to visual the space and what it contains months before construction will begin or as it is in progress.

In conjunction with the renderings, material palettes were chosen for each project and applied to the view. The image to the left shows an option of halo lighting around the cafe sign on the back wall. Highlights of the cafe include an LED American Flag bulkhead, snack wall, natural lighting, and “Hero� dedication wall.

INFORMATION Fall 2019 Apex Student Juried Art Exhibit Prof. Shelby Doyle

Using a g-code made from Grasshopper scripts and specially-made clay, nine vases were created through the duration of this research to determine the importance of internal and external variables on fabrication machinery.

Per vase, there are zero computable variables changed, only physical variables. The experiment consists of three sizes and shapes of extrusion nozzles. To ensure the successful finish of a vase, manual adjustment of the bed and nozzle speed were necessary. The purpose of our experiment was to see how excluded variables affect the output of a vase. Three vases were glazed with assistance of ceramics student Bre Englehardt and accepted into the 2020 Apex Art Show.

INFORMATION Spring 2019 FBD Grant Recipient AIAS Freedom by Design

TOPICS design-build community outreach

SYNOPSIS created in part with Madison Cardenas, Samuel Contreras, Sarah Cobb, Ben Hansen, Sirina Reed, Rob Murrow, Heather Schulte, & Nolan Sullivan

Mustard Seed Farm (MSF) approached Iowa State’s Freedom by Design (FBD) chapter with an idea of creating a space in their newly constructed barn as a place to store and display their goods produced on the farm, including handmade rugs, pottery, candles, and seasonal vegetables.

Upon receiving a grant from the National FBD organization and wood donations from MSF, the five cabinets were able to be fabricated fully in the College of Design Model Shop by our team members. Two have acrylic faces and tilted top displays, one hosts quilts and rugs with a single swinging drawer and acrylic top, one has full wooden doors, and a small corner unit holds materials for a loom. Installation took place in May and a post occupancy evaluation was completed in October.
