2200 GRAND AVENUE DLR Group Prize Finalist - Fall 2019 Project Location - Des Moines, Iowa regenerative design + historic preservation With a given program of housing for high-functioning individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), regenerative design, a data center and recreational component, and a reaction to historic preservation, 2200 Grand Avenue approaches the Des Moines-based site upon a hill with integration and inclusion in mind, realized through programmatic and formatic design decisions. Organized around three central nodes along the current column grid, a the data center penetrates through the central node to serve as an art piece. The building utilizes the “public-private,� offering privatized spaces in public setting. The lower level includes a cafe, and yoga and wellness studio. The first level includes a game room, offices, library, and community kitchen. The second level hosts the residents living with ASD, as well as private and resident-focused spaces. The addition, an extension of the column grid, seeks to stand as a modern addition, while keeping the integrity of the original building.

living building challenge In order to address the regenerative design programmatic requirement of our studio, we used the Living Building Challenge (LBC) as a design framework. The LBC uses “petals� as essential elements to design by: PLACE / WATER / ENERGY / HEATH + HAPPINESS / MATERIALS / EQUITY / BEAUTY

Several features were implemented as shown below to fulfill these goals and include solar energy production, heat recycling, underground water recycling system, pedestrian (re)connection to the street and to forest land, respect for historic qualities, and accessibility and inclusion for users, primarily those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

CHELSEA SCHOOL OF SET DESIGN In collaboration with Matt Koepke- Spring 2019 Project Location - Chelsea, Manhattan, NY programmatic gentifrication + parasitic architecture Tasked with creating a vertical campus for the makers of Chelsea and housing for the university, our project additionally seeks to question the programmatic gentrification that has occurred in Chelsea. Given the changing environment that is Chelsea, Manhattan, our goal isn’t to reinstate the shops that have disappeared over time, but to revitalize the program of the neighborhood. Straying away from high end living, shopping, food, and galleries, our space invites people from all walks of life to participate in changing cultural and societal events in our space.

Reacting to the changing environment around them, students at the Chelsea School of Set Design (CSSD) use their creative power to respond to engaging audiences through the visual appeals of performing arts.

The CSSD takes hold on one of the art galleries below, penetrating it with a gateway to the creative potential and inclusivity above.

Straying away from high end living, shopping, food, and galleries, our space invites people from all walks of life to participate in changing cultural and societal events in our space.

Interlocking rings of program signify the connection that holds the group together. The floating rings are connected vertically, yet never horizontally, so as to mock the exclusivity of the contextual program.

Students at the CSSD conceptualize, design, fabricate, and implement the sets that local, regional, and professional artists and performers utilize during performances. Three vertically moving stages access studio spaces for setup, and various level of performance, High Line, mid-level, and peak.

PLANO-BLOCK Iowa Masonry Assoc. Unit Design Competition Runner Up - Spring 2019 Project Team - Donovan Bunn, Matt Koepke, Chris Perez concrete masonry unit innovation design Plano-block seeks to utilize the standard confines of a CMU mold in order to maximize the casting and design potential. The concept stems from a desire to see more fluidity and modularity within the use of CMU blocks that would yield greater design potentials which break the standard confines of straight angle configurations. In doing so, we designed our mold to produce six blocks per cast; one plano-concave, one plano-convex, and four semicircular. This configuration maximizes mold space and offers a variety of design configurations that can be produced. Therefore, applications can be seen within the realms of architectural and landscape design in providing configurations such as green walls, exhibition pavilions, and retaining walls. Plano-block is a way to view the potential of CMU blocks and their applications, while challenging the standardized forms that are typically produced.

M U S TA R D S E E D FA R M S T O R A G E S O L U T I O N AIAS Freedom by Design Semester Project - Spring 2019 2019 Freedom by Design Grant Recipient Project Team - Madison Cardenas, Sarah Cobb, Samuel Contreras, Ben Hansen, Rob Murrow, Sirina Reed, Heather Schulte, Nolan Sullivan community service + volunteerism Mustard Seed Farm (MSF) approached Iowa State’s Freedom by Design (FBD) chapter with an idea of creating a space in their newly constructed barn as a place to store and display their goods produced on the farm, including handmade rugs, pottery, candles, and seasonal vegetables and crops. Upon receiving a grant from the national FBD organization, as well as wood donations from MSF, the five cabinets were able to be fabricated fully in the College of Design Model Shop by our team members. Two have acrylic faces and tilted top displays, one hosts quilts and rugs with a single swinging drawer and acrylic top, one with full wooden doors, and a small corner unit to hold materials for a loom.

Installation took place in early May and a post occupancy evaluation was completed in October.

3D PRINTED CERAMICS Digital Fabrication Research - Fall 2019 In collaboration with Jacob Gasper potterbot Using a g-code made from Grasshopper scripts and specially-made clay, nine vases were created through the duration of this research to show the importance of internal and external variables on fabrication machinery.

Per vase, there are zero computable variables changed, only physical variables. The experiment consists of three sizes and shapes of extrusion nozzles: three millimeter, four millimeter, and five millimeter diameters as well as star, triangle, and circle extrusion shapes. Additionally, to ensure the successful finish of a vase, manual adjustment of the bed and nozzle speed were necessary. The purpose of our experiment was to see how excluded variables affect the output of a vase. By not changing g-code variables- layer height, size of the vase, vase pattern, etc.- we are able to see a result that included some failures, but also deem the importance of the g-code and its variables per print method, as very high.
