É considerado por muitos como o homem que mudou o Porto. Sente que a cidade tem a sua traça? Comentam realmente isso, mas não é verdade. Há uns anos era diferente, hoje existe muita coisa nova, imensas coisas interessantíssimas e, portanto, o Porto está diferente e ainda bem. Há 30 anos talvez tenha sido dos primeiros a fazê-lo, mas agora há muita gente a fazer bons interiores. Eu tento sempre fazer o melhor e temos hoje projetos interessantes no Porto. O seu pai queria que fosse médico. Foi informático e depois saltou para o mundo da decoração. Nessa altura fez um delete ao seu passado? As coisas aconteceram de forma lenta. Nessa altura, o tempo era diferente de hoje e a maneira de pensar era distinta… Foi um processo natural. Não apaguei, comecei uma coisa nova e foi correndo bem, as pessoas foram gostando e apareceram cada vez mais clientes. Como define o seu estilo? Não tenho uma definição especial. Há muitos anos, quando iniciei o meu percurso profissional nesta área, definiam-me como minimalista, agora esta palavra caiu em desuso
e já não me definem de maneira nenhuma. Não considero que o tenha sido. A minha linguagem utiliza a mistura de materiais chamados pobres ou brutos com alguns que são considerados nobres. É um pouco isso, essa mistura das duas coisas que são muito interessantes. Hoje também temos um bocadinho a tendência para utilizar algumas peças do artesanato português, com qualidade, algumas centenárias…. Foi a partir daí que abriu as lojas Lobo Taste e Hats & C.A.T.S.? Pensámos ter uma loja ligada ao artesanato mas tratá-lo de outra maneira e que recuperasse as técnicas para fazer produtos novos com design. A Hats & C.A.T.S. é um projeto que reúne objetos de todo o mundo, incluindo Portugal. C.A.T.S significa [na sigla em inglês] artigos contemporâneos, tradição e simplicidade. A Lobo Taste só vende produtos de origem portuguesa. Desenhados cá e fabricados em Portugal. O projeto está a correr bem e, ao longo destes quase três anos, as vendas têm vindo a subir.

You are considered by many as the man who changed Oporto. Do you feel that the city has your style? People do really say that but it’s not true. A few years ago it was different, but now there are so many new things, lots of really remarkable things and therefore Oporto is different and that is good. Thirty years ago I may have been the first to do so, but now there are many people creating fine interiors. I always try to do my best and today we have interesting projects in Oporto. Your father wanted you to be a doctor. You were a computer engineer and then you jumped into the world of interior design. By then have you deleted your past? Things happened slowly. At that time, it was different from today and the mindset was different ... It was a
How would you define your style? I don’t have a special definition. Many years ago when I started my professional career in this area, people defined me as a minimalist, now this word has fallen into disuse and people no longer define me. I do not think that I have been minimalist. My language uses a mixture of materials named poor or raw with some that are considered noble. It is rather this, the mixture of those two things that it is very interesting. Today we also have a little tendency to use some items of Portuguese craftsmanship, quality ones, some of them are centuries old... That’s why you have decided to open the stores Lobo Taste and Hats & C.A.T.S.? We thought about having a shop related to craftsmanship but approaching it in a different way, recovering the techniques to make new design products. Hats & C.A.T.S. is a project that brings together objects from around the world, including Portugal. C.A.T.S. means contemporary articles, tradition and simplicity. Lobo Taste only sells products of Portuguese origin. Designed and manufactured here in Portugal. The project is going well and, in this last nearly three years, sales have been rising.

Qual foi a sua preocupação no espaço L’Kodac? O espaço tinha já um desenho do arquiteto que depois, com a autorização dele, foi alterado por mim em termos de acabamentos de interior e de equipamento e mobiliário, de acordo com o conceito e a atmosfera que se pretendia para o L’Kodac. Naturalmente que o mais importante é a relação entre o próprio restaurante fechado com a esplanada e em termos de dimensão de equipamento era importante que funcionasse também à noite, embora fosse um espaço de praia, e de inverno pudesse cativar as pessoas. Acho que isso foi conseguido. Claro que o cliente é sempre importante porque conseguiu agarrar aquilo muito bem e leva lá gente que até eu fico surpreendido.
Que projetos tem atualmente em mãos? Estamos a finalizar o projeto de um hotel de Enoturismo perto de Amarante, inserido numa zona de vinhas que dão origem ao vinho verde. Vamos também fazer uma guest house em Cascais, que abrirá em julho, e estamos também a fazer o circuito de visitas da Unicer da Super Bock, que deverá abrir em breve ao público. O que ainda não fez e gostaria de fazer na área do design de interiores? Diria uma igreja interessante, um talho interessante ou um clube de jazz importante… Há muita coisa! Celebra este ano 30 anos de atividade dedicada ao design de interiores. Como projeta os próximos 30 anos? Queria naturalmente que continuassem a aparecer projetos ou propostas para fazermos interiores novos.
What was your main concern when it comes to L’Kodac? The space had already a design created by the architect that later, with his authorization, was remodelled by me in terms of internal finishes, equipments and furniture, according to the concept and the atmosphere planned for the L’Kodac. Naturally, the most important thing is the relation between the closed restaurant itself and the terrace and in terms of the size of the equipment it was important that it also would work well at night, although it was a beach location, and during the winter it should be able to attract people. I think that has been achieved. Of course the client is always important because it managed to take hold of it very well and draws people there that even I get surprised.
What projects do you have currently in hand? We are finishing the design of a wine tourism hotel near Amarante, set in an area of vineyards used to produce “vinho verde” wine. We are also going to make a guest house in Cascais, which will open in July, and we are doing the visit circuit for for Unicer of Super Bock, wich will open soon to the public. What have you not yet done and would like to do in the interior design field? I would say an interesting church, an interesting butcher’s or a major jazz club... There are lot of things! This year you celebrate 30 years of dedication to interior design. How do you see the next 30 years? Naturally I would like to continue to get projects or proposals to do new interior designs.
