SLIM AARONS

THE FIRST TO CAPTURE THE APRÈS-SKI AESTHETIC

This winter, the aesthetic of 60’sluxurious Après-Ski has once again captivated our generation with its alluring elegance and class Large fur jackets, slick ski pants, and patterned turtlenecks ruled the mountains of Aspen, Colorado and Verbier, Switzerland as individuals enjoyed their afternoon champagne

As ski season approaches, bold and Après-Ski inspired winter wear is dominating the slopes. The goal is to capture the timeless essence of lavish skiing from decades past and bring it to life again. But, who was the first to recognize the potential of this style? Where did the origin of this aesthetic begin?

In the late 1960s, photographer Slim Aarons devoted his time to capturing the luxurious lifestyle of the rich and famous around the world Whether it was in California, New York, Italy, France, or Spain- Aarons always showcased the pure authenticness of the style and culture during this time In his own words, Aarons took pictures of “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places ” While his images continued to gain fame over the years, one of his most renowned categories was his Après-Ski photography.

Après-Ski is a French term which translates to “after ski” or “after skiing.” While this was initially just referring to the post-ski day dinner parties and happy hours which were thrown on

the powdery slopes- it evolved into a culture which would inspire fashion enthusiasts for decades to come Men and women dressed in elaborate metallic puffers, fur-lined ear warmers and boots, silk-scarfs, and cableknit, patterned sweaters paired with shiny, black sunglasses were so timelessly unique that we now use it for our own winter inspiration

How is Aaron’s eye for refined winter fashion reflected in today’s trends? Classic brands like J Crew and Ralph Lauren consistently offer an array of vibrant cashmere sweaters in a spectrum of colors, perfect for layering during your winter getaway This season particularly, Ralph Lauren has brought archive ski pieces from their ‘90s campaign to be revived by the younger generation of style lovers. With retro patterns and flashy colorsthey are staple pieces to be added to your Après-Ski collection.

Ski-wear brand Perfect Moment has reimagined retro ski style, curating a collection that captures the timeless charm and bold spirit of captivating winter wear. Featuring their own line of Après-Ski sweaters and starstudded ski gear, the brand offers endless possibilities to mix and match, creating unforgettable looks that evoke the same excitement as the iconic outfits in Slim Aarons’ photos.

Lastly, Zara and H&M have taken the long-time trend of adding captivating metallic pieces to your winter look and redefined it through their own collections of ski suits and puffer jackets

As you see the perfect inspiration for your Après-Ski look-book this winter holiday, immerse yourself in the enchanting lifestyle captured by the creative genius, Slim Aarons

APRÈS SKI

Hitting the slopes is just one part of the ski experience; looking your best while doing so is another.

Winter has arrived, and whether you're venturing to Aspen, Breckenridge or another extravagant winter wonderland, mastering the art of après-ski style will have you effortlessly gliding from the mountain to the lodge in chic, cold-weather perfection

For some, winter means surrendering style by wearing bulky coats and sweats to replace refined fashion. But sacrificing style for comfort is unnecessary. Après-ski fashion perfectly balances practicality and sophistication, combining mountain utility with refined luxury. It’s about attention to detail and sourcing materials that serve a dual purpose.

WHAT IS APRÈS-SKI STYLE?

Après-ski, which means "after ski" in French, refers to the leisure time and social activities following a day on the slopes Its fashion embraces warm layers, luxurious materials and bold accessories It’s about comfort without compromise

LAYER WITH PURPOSE

At its core, après-ski style balances performance with style, so layering is essential Start with the right base to keep you warm without feeling constricted Opt for a fitted merino wool or thermal top in neutral tones like black, grey or white, for a sleek and breathable foundation Over that, a fine-knit cashmere sweater in a rich hue (think deep burgundy or forest green) will add both warmth and luxury. When it comes to outerwear, this is where you can make a statement. A well-tailored, insulated puffer jacket in a high-performance fabric like Gore-Tex will keep you cozy without the bulk, while sleek metallic accents or color-blocking can add some edge. For a more sophisticated look, consider a belted wool coat or a chic, zip-up shearling jacket that brings a rugged yet luxurious vibe to your look

FOCUS ON TEXTURES AND MATERIALS

Embrace materials that evoke both toughness and sophistication Look for outerwear crafted from durable yet luxurious fabrics like premium wool

A shearling-lined bomber jacket, for example, combines rugged warmth with effortless style

For pants, choose a pair of tailored ski trousers made from technical fabrics like soft-shell or corduroy, designed to move with you but still keep a sharp silhouette. Choose boots with waterproofing details, like water-resistant leather and thick rubber soles that can withstand the elements while looking polished.

EMBRACE STORYTELLING THROUGH ACCESSORIES

Accessories are essential for adding personality and finishing touches. Start with a pair of stylish, winter-inspired sunglasses – go for metal-framed aviators or oversized square lenses with reflective coatings, which offer a nod to the outdoor aesthetic while maintaining chic style. A high-quality wool or cashmere scarf in a checkered pattern or solid neutral tone will add texture and warmth, doubling as an instant style upgrade. Look for gloves that combine utility with luxury – gloves lined with cashmere or shearling will keep your hands warm while enhancing your overall aesthetic

Winter fashion is an opportunity for men to explore creativity and express personal style, even in the harshest climates By investing in versatile, highquality pieces, you’re not just dressing for the season you’re embracing it Après-ski style captures the spirit of adventure and leisure, helping you stand out both on and off the slopes

Initially, Johnson’s and Boone’s goal was to highlight local artists in their upcoming publication, but they soon realized they could take their startup a step further by recruiting creatives to produce professional work Throughout the spring and summer, the Midwest team completed projects like commercial shoots and collaborative advertising photoshoots with local businesses. Midwest quickly went from an idea for a magazine to a full fledged media agency run entirely by OU students.

Midwest held its magazine and website launch event Dec. 8 at The Wagon, a bar on Norman, Oklahoma’s Campus Corner The newly-opened college bar was transformed into a runway and vintage market, with Oklahomabased vendors covering one side of the space The event also featured a live art installation, later ending the night with a fashion show highlighting local designers and models

Heading into the new year,

Midwest is launching a creative boot camp for high school students, headshot services and a full suite of creative production services and will begin hosting more fashion shows, events and the recurring Midwest Market series

MIDWEST THE NEXT BIG THING FOR OKLAHOMA CREATIVESHQ

In March 2024, OU students Eliana ..................Johnson and Lauren Boone met ..................while living at the same apartment ..................complex. One month later, they joined forces aiming to create a magazine that would highlight artists from the Tulsa and Oklahoma City areas They immediately began to lay the foundation for Midwest Creative Group

According to Johnson, Midwest provides students and local creatives opportunities to work professionally without needing to move to larger cities where the creative scene is harder to break into

“[AT THE SHOW] ALL THESE GROUPS CAN COME HERE TOGETHER AND MEET ONE ANOTHER,” BOONE SAID “THAT'S A REALLY BIG MOMENT, AND SOMETHING THAT JUST HASN'T HAPPENED YET HERE.”

“2025 is going to be a really big year for us,” Johnson said

TINY FIGURES, BIG IMPACT

The fall of the Iron Curtain opened a wardrobe for models in post-Soviet countries. The unique beauty of girls from this region caught the eye of agencies, even if it was because of the conditions of the country that led to malnourished women. High cheekbones, porcelain skin, and piercing eyes are timeless and otherworldly. Major modeling agencies like Elite, IMG, and Next scouted extensively in Slavic countries after recognizing the unique beauty and work ethic of models from the region The fashion industry in the 90s and 2000s was looking for globalization, and this provided that Likewise, designers were demanding for models that fit their artistic vision

I THEPARISIAN WINTER WORDROBE

f a recent trip abroad has taught me anything, it's that Parisians know how to dress for the weather Christmas in Paris isn't all sunshine and sightseeing; there are cold and rainy days in a city built for walking, not knowing when the next downpour will happen

Walking the city, I began to note what the locals were wearing and what highfashion solutions our French-speaking friends had made to combat the constant chill After a while, I noticed a simple solution I saw at every turn: a winter uniform adopted by those running to work or walking the streets with their friends

A long wool-tailored coat of brown or black, a thick warm scarf you can cover your hair with, and a thick-soled boot The Acne Studios scarf was a clear fan

favorite in bright colors and tartan patterns, and I haven’t seen so many Doc Martin boots in years. While simple sneakers were another option for younger passersby, the winter boot was the overall style winner

No matter what was worn underneath, I noticed rather quickly that the vast majority of Parisians wore this same combination They covered their hair with scarves when there was an unexpected downpour and walked through puddles without care of ruining their favorite shoes

There are no puffer jackets and earmuffs, just simple, tailored, and put-together looks

While the French idea of put together is quite different from our stateside views, we can look across the Atlantic for inspiration for our wintery wardrobes.

HUNTER’S BACK

Ireminder quite clearly begging my parents to buy me a pair of black Hunter boots in 2013, to wear with my monogrammed vest, skinny jeans, and socks that foldover the top of my boots

At the time, my mom simply said I would never wear them again, and here I am now, entering 2025, searching the web for the perfect boot. Rainboots are a staple, and a long-standing, reputable brand such as Hunter is perfect for an investment piece.

The popularity of the Hunter boot follows the recent trend of Barbour Jackets playing off the Old Money English aesthetic or rainy and cold winters on a Scottish estate.

The Hunter boot is seen in many reference pictures of a new trend, the “Fisherman's Aesthetic ” Now, don’t worry; this style of dress isn’t fishing shirts and horrible sunglasses but a combination of an East Coast aesthetic and the recently popular bohemian style

As I have seen in my lifetime, Hunter boots come in and out of trend but will always remain a classic and lasting piece So, if you’re looking for a new boot to add to your wardrobe, it's safe to say that Hunter boots are here to stay
