A MAN’S ULTIMATE GUIDE TO DIVE-BAR STYLE

There’s a certain poetry to the dive-bar aesthetic – dimly lit, unpolished, effortlessly cool – and the menswear that thrives in it follows the same unspoken rules: rugged, worn-in, and steeped in character

To fully embrace this gritty yet chic aesthetic, a wellcurated dive-bar wardrobe is essential Here are the essentials that will elevate your style and ensure you look effortlessly cool while sipping a whiskey and coke, or playing a round of pool

WORN-IN DENIM

Every great dive-bar look starts with a reliable pair of jeans Worn-in denim, characterized by its faded or distressed appearance, brings a sense of authenticity to your outfit Opt for a relaxed or straight fit that provides comfort and allows for movement, which is essential when you're navigating the bar scene Whether you choose classic blue or opt for black, these jeans will serve as the foundation for your laid-back look, pairing seamlessly with almost anything.

LEATHER OR DENIM LAYERS

Layering with leather or denim jackets introduces an element of rugged sophistication to your dive-bar wardrobe A leather jacket instantly adds an edgy flair, evoking images of rock 'n' roll and rebellion, while a denim jacket provides a classic, timeless appeal Both options serve as versatile pieces that can be thrown over a simple vintage t-shirt or sweater, making them suitable for various occasions These layers not only enhance the visual interest of your outfit but also provide layers The key is to choose pieces that are slightly worn or have a relaxed fit, which aligns perfectly with the dive-bar aesthetic

VINTAGE PIECES

Incorporating vintage pieces into your dive-bar look elevates your style while also showcasing your personality and history. Vintage clothing – whether it’s a retro jacket, an old-school band tee, or eclectic accessories – adds depth and storytelling to your outfit. These items often come with a sense of nostalgia and can serve as conversation starters, making them ideal for dive bars. Look for pieces that reflect your interests and experiences, creating a curated look that feels personal and authentic.

In the end, a dive-bar wardrobe is less about fashion and more about feeling. It’s curated charm, nostalgic nonchalance, and effortless attitude. It tells your story without needing to shout and that’s exactly the point.

From your old middle school yearbook to your mom’s hand-me-down 1997 Jimmy Choo Romy pumps, what we keep in our closets is a reflection of who we are.

THE CLOSET

CHRONICLES

Since the beginning of (modern) times, young girls have begun stuffing their belongings into one singular room: their closet. From old Nike headbands, to raggedy Doc Martens, your closet is the home of all of your wearable belongings. To some, it is also the home of their most treasured childhood memories and mementos

Celebrities like the late Iris Apfel have allowed people to take a look inside of their own personal closets Iris Apfel, being a fashion icon and legend, kept only vibrant clothes in her closet that expressed who she was as a designer. From her extravagant neon coats to her gigantic spectacles, Iris’s closet portrayed exactly who we saw all over the media. Through her untouched closet and imprint left on the fashion world, Ivy’s multicolored legacy lives on.

Other celebrities such as model and heiress, Ivy Getty, have also opened up their closets to the public. According to the CUT, Ivy Getty’s closet revealed her Uptown Girls aesthetic and unique collection of keepsakes such as her

grandmother’s ivy-print YSL scarf and her late father’s purple robe Ivy keeps items like these inher closet to allow the legacy of those who have passed to live on through her When she returns to her colorful apartment, she sees these items in

A glimpse into a busy college student’s closet can also reveal their busy life as they run to and from school among other activities OU Headington College Resident Advisor and sophomore, Maggie Smith, believes her closet is a clear reflection of her as a person, from the notable appearance of the color pink to her favorite Eras Tour sweatshirt For students like Maggie who live in the dorms, your room and closet is the prime place to express yourself, creating a sense of comfort in your home away from home Seeing her Eras sweatshirt everyday is a constant reminder of one of the big events in Maggie’s life that made her the happiest. Therefore, the next time you grab an old sweatshirt out of your closet, or the brand new suit jacket for your next interview, think about the items you see that make you you Use your closet as a way to express yourself and create the image you wish to see in the mirror everyday, just like Iris, Ivy and Maggie Use fashion as your therapy, and allow your closet to be your own personalized office

DIVE BAR

AN ODE TO ISABEL MARANT FROM TO BOHO CHIC

Photo: Filippo Fior

Brand The

The French label Isabel Marant, named after the designer herself, has created edgy preta-porter collections for 30 years. Marant’s start in fashion began in middle school, as she

experimented with her parents’ wardrobes and wore alternative ensembles to school According to a British Vogue interview, Marant claims she “didn’t even know what fashion was” at her young age She simply catered to her personal tastes and began creating original styles after a disappointing and unsuccessful shopping trip for new clothes. Although we have all been there, Marant’s creativity at just sixteen caught on at school and in her community, and she decided to attend Studio Berçot fashion school for college. While in Paris in 1989, Marant began her first fashion lines– jewelry, knitwear and signature styles. Her designs are continually inspired by her lifetime travels to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean; she claims that she “does not revolutionize the fashion world,” despite producing styles that nod to the boho-chic aesthetic

Isabel Marant’s 2025 Spring-Summer collection reaffirms the brand’s bold identity, delivering a runway filled with fringe, gladiator sandals, leather and lace These elements, while forecasting contemporary fashion trends, also nod to the rebellious aesthetic of the early 2000s- most notably represented in the classic film Coyote Ugly

The

With plunging necklines, dark smokey eyes, teased hair and studded accessories, the models looked as though they stepped

straight out of the movie’s iconic bar-top dance scenes The film’s fashion, worn by stars like Tyra Banks and Bridget Moynahan, blends performance and style in a way that now feels relevant again As both models and actresses, Banks and Moynahan blurred the line between runway and screen, mirroring how today’s fashion balances between nostalgia and reinvention. Similarly, iconic model and fashion icon, Kate Moss, brought her edgy glam to Marant’s 2025 Spring-Summer campaign.

As the face of this year’s line, Moss embodies the bar-top boot-stomping aesthetics of the models and colleagues of the 2000s. Though separated by decades, Coyote Ugly and Marant’s latest collection are kindred spirits- bold, edgy, and fashionable

BANKING ON BEAUTY

THE FASHION MOGUL’S INFLUENCE ON A GENERATION

LLove her or hate her, you’re probably at least rooting for her Tyra Banks has been a household name since she took the fashion industry by storm in the 1990s

Banks began modeling professionally as a teenager, beginning her career in Paris where she walked in her first high-fashion runway show, according to an interview with Lean In Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting women. Pushing back against pressure to fit the typical French model body type, she returned to the U S , shifted her focus to swimwear and lingerie shoots and grew her success while rallying for body positivity Over the decade, Banks achieved a number of milestones for the fashion industry, bec-

ing the first Black woman photographed on the covers of both GQ and Sports Illustrated as well as the first Black Victoria’s Secret Angel photographed on the cover of the lingerie brand’s catalogue.

Heading toward the new millennium, Banks leapt into her acting career when she landed a role in the 2000 cult classic “Coyote Ugly” Her looks in this film, as well as on runways and in the street, were enough to inspire a generation

THE WILD, UGLY WEST

It’d be wrong to discuss Banks’s classic looks without first highlighting her style as Zöe in “Coyote Ugly” The quintessential Y2K fashion film, its designers embraced the raunchy fashion that was prevalent in the early 2000s with skin-tight leather, low-rise everything and tiny tops.

While the film took place in the Big Apple, Western was the name of the game for Banks’s character. One of her most iconic outfits is a monochromatic ensemble featuring a cropped suede halter top, leather mini skirt and chunky belt The look is topped off with a simple choker, a staple accessory for the character

ANGELIC ELEGANCE

At the beginning of her Angel stardom in 1997, Banks stepped out at a Victoria’s Secret event unveiling the “Diamond Dream Bra,” a $3 million strapless satin bra lined with diamonds and a 42-carat stone The bra was the star of the show in the timeless ensemble, with Banks sporting an oversized black button-up blouse, black cutout skirt, tights and black strappy heels

HOT TO THE MAX

On the runway and the red carpet, Banks has never been one to shy away from maximalism and bold patterns

For the Spring 1993 Todd Oldham runway show, Banks sported a striped shorts suit over a cropped white button-up blouse The look was complete with a thick red belt to match the primary colors in the blazer and shorts While this look is a sign of the times, 2025 is also seeing a return to standout patterns and funky silhouettes Banks is known for much more than just her sense of style: hosting “America’s Next Top Model,” founding production company Bankable Productions and creating nonprofit organization TZONE........ Foundation, to name a few of her feats She has led the way for many women in fashion and has been outspoken about the crucial role of diversity in the industry Whether fashionably or professionally, Banks is a classic source of inspiration

Coyote Ugly-a quintessential early 200s classic- is known for its unapologetically wild atmosphere, liberating party scenes, and the iconic storyline of doing whatever it takes to make it in New York City. But beyond the plot and the bar-top dancing, one thing that’s truly stood the test of time is the film’s unforgettable fashion.

Think Harley-Davidson baby tanks paired with ultra-low-rise jeans, studded leather belts, and leather pants topped with cowboys hats and chokers- a combination that had 2000s teens fully captivated There’s just something about leather pants and cowboy boots that delivers unmatched energy, confidence, and attitude It’s not just fashion- it’s a full-blown statement.

So where are we now? Since Y2K fashion made its bold return in 2020, many have brushed it off as just another fleeting trend, but designers beg to differ From the moment graphic tanks and low-rise pants stepped back into the spotlight, the demand for bold, unapologetic pieces hasn’t slowed down In fact, the appetite for these wild, nostalgic staples is only growing stronger

Back in 2001 and 2002, Miss Me and True Religion

Jeans reigned supreme, undeniable staples in the denim game for just about everyone during that time While these iconic brands still have a place in the closets of many young women today, the low-rise revival has welcomed new leaders Labels like Agolde, Mother, Zara, and Reformation now offer low-rise jeans in every cut, color, and fit imaginable

What truly solidified the comeback?

Legacy brands like Gap and Banana Republic stepped back into the spotlight, bringing fresh takes on waitskimming denim that prove this trend isn’t just backit’s here to stay

When it comes to shirts and tanks, the Coyote Ugly vibe is all about cropped, fitted, and fearlessly fun. Spaghetti straps and DIY-cut hems capture the spirit that style doesn’t always need a seamstress, sometimes a pair of scissors are all it takes.

Designers like Moschino, Dolce and Gabbana, and Jean Paul Gaultier continue to be the ultimate icons, blending bold statements with wearable art Some of their most coveted vintage tops can even be found in the depths of eBay or Poshmark

While most of us aren’t living out the wild energy of Coyote Ugly on a daily basis, that doesn’t mean we can’t channel the vibe through what we wear.

Sometimes, slipping into that bold, edgy style is all it takes to feel the confidence from the inside out

So, if Coyote Ugly taught us anything, it’s that Y2K fashion isn’t just having a moment- it;s commented it’s place in the style hall of fame, proving that it never goes out of style

COYOTE COOL

The hiring manager has an attitude and a megaphone Instead of a resume, the application is a ‘survival of the fittest’ behind one of the rowdiest bars downtown Expected to charm and look available but never be, an unspoken requirement of this job was to spend a good portion of your paychecks shopping

What pairs well with sweat? Marlene Stewart, the film’s costume designer, thought Western wear was the best fit Cutoff tees in all sorts of arrays: ripped, sliced, diced, embellished with

rhinestones, worn backward and with oversized belt buckles Stewart was inspired by the biker-chic aesthetic worn by many of the staff at the original bar, Hogs and Heifers in New York’s Meatpacking District.

JERSEY GIRL

The film follows Violet Sanford, played by Piper Perabo, and she’s your classic small-town-girl-chasing-big-dreams archetype. This nonfashion movie turned into a haven for critics at the sight of her dreamy Y2K outfits. A sweet and reserved girl who suffers from stage fright hopes to make it big as a singer/songwriter dresses the part Her style aligns with where she is in her creative career path, with early Violet doused in soft makeup, plain tees, and ponytails, and Coyote Violet becoming a smoky-eyed, crop top and cowgirl boot wearing diva that conquers her fears in an unconventional way.

WHISKEY-SPILLED STYLE

Work attire here was unique Stylish but with the strong possibility of being doused in liquor; and dancing on slippery bars requires seriously sturdy shoes Stewart used a mix of traditional western boots and Frye boots to keep these girls on their feet all night long She also displayed the true undeniable power of a baby tee

DRESSED TO SPILL (DRINKS AND DRAMA)

The wild side style of Coyote Ugly still lingers- like the scent of cheap whiskey and expensive perfume. The politics of barwear is something rarely discussed in real time, but this film pours it over ice and serves it cold Not only does it have the power to turn heads, but also tables Coyote Ugly reminds us that even under neon lights and whiskey spills, fashion still speaks volumes Fashion can give us the confidence needed to chase our dreams and the guts to dance on a bar.

THE PERFECT TANK

Seen in the likes of Ralph Lauren and Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2025 collections, the U-shaped tank is quickly emerging as the defining wardrobe essential of the season. With its subtle neckline and softly scooped silhouette, this piece brings a fresh take to summer dressing. It’s simple, flattering, and quietly

bold, a combination that makes it an instant staple

Breezy and easy to style, the U-shaped tank pairs effortlessly with just about everything. Tucked into a structured midi skirt, it feels elevated and feminine. Thrown on with your favorite worn-in jean shorts, it’s laid-back and cool without ever looking too casual. It’s the kind of piece that moves with you, adapting to your day while still making a statement.

There’s a reason this silhouette is showing up on both runways and sidewalks. It offers versatility without losing shape, and softness without sacrificing structure. Designers are styling it under oversized blazers and linen trousers Off-duty models are reaching for it as a go-to for sunny coffee runs and casual dinners

The beauty of the U-shaped tank lies in its subtlety It doesn’t try too hard, but it doesn’t blend in either It carries a quiet kind of confidence and serves as a reminder that sometimes the simplest pieces make the strongest impression As temperatures rise and wardrobes lighten, this tank is the piece you’ll keep reaching for Whether you’re packing for a beach weekend, getting dressed for brunch, or curating your closet for the season ahead, it belongs in the mix

This summer, let your style breathe The U-shaped tank is proof that ease and elegance can absolutely exist in the very same piece

A STRIPES

subtle nod to the current nautical trend, stripes are the pattern of the summer. Clean, classic, and effortlessly cool, they’ve returned in full force, making waves on both runways and sidewalks From timeless navy and white to

unexpected color combos, this season’s take on stripes feels fresh, playful, and just structured enough

Designers are leaning into the look with breezy silhouettes and sun-washed palettes. Think airy cotton sets, oversized buttondowns, and coastal-inspired tailoring. Ralph Lauren gave us seaside elegance, while Chloé played with painterly lines and soft linen textures. The message is clear: stripes are no longer reserved for the yacht club.

One of the reasons stripes remain a warm-weather favorite is their versatility A crisp striped tank tucked into a midi skirt feels polished and relaxed all at once A flowy maxi dress in bold vertical lines brings instant movement and elongation Even the subtlest detail, like a striped silk scarf or a lightweight cardigan, can elevate an otherwise simple outfit

Stripes also have a way of telling a story without saying a word They reference travel, tradition, and ease They remind us of coastal escapes and golden hour strolls And they make even a casual outfit feel thoughtful and styled

Whether you’re packing for a beach getaway or just dressing for a heatwave in the city, stripes are a smart go-to They work across personal style, across decades, and across trends, bringing a certain kind of quiet confidence to every look.

So if you’re leaning into summer simplicity, reach for the pattern that never lets you down. Stripes are timeless for a reason, and this season, they’re speaking louder than ever.
