RESULTS DAY AND CONFIRMATION Following the release of A level results on 18 August, and assuming you’ve selected LJMU as your conditional firm choice and you meet all the conditions of your offer, you will be accepted on to your course at the university. Even if you haven’t quite met the requirements, LJMU may still accept you – please see UCAS Track for details on the day or contact our confirmation hotline.

STARTING AT LJMU You will complete your student registration online before you arrive at the university for enrolment and start your induction programme. Full details will be included in your LJMU starter pack. Your first week at LJMU will be packed full of things to do and places to see. You will receive an invitation to attend a welcome event where you will be able to find out more about university services, what’s happening in the city and meet other new students. As a new student you will be expected to complete an induction programme prior to the official start

of the academic year. Induction is your opportunity to get to know your academic team, meet your personal tutor and start to make friends with people on your course. Your starter pack will give you more details on what to expect and when. John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU, see page 26) also organise a programme of activities to help you settle into university life and find out more about Liverpool’s exciting student scene. These events usually start during the official moving in weekend (tenancies start on the 17 September) and continue until week one of semester one. Look out for updates from JMSU after confirmation.

Visit the Albert Dock. With so many amazing restaurants, cafes and bars you will never be short of somewhere to grab a bite to eat once you have looked round the Tate Modern, Museum of Liverpool and International Slavery and Maritime Museum. There is just no way you can live in Liverpool without learning about its diverse history.

Go to one of the many parks just outside the city centre. Whether it be Calderstones Park with its beautiful walled garden or Sefton Park with its incredible palm house, there are so many amazing green spaces to clear your mind.

Get the ferry across the Mersey. It is a quick, whistle-stop tour across the North Wirral coastline as well as a brief history of Liverpool with the iconic theme song from Gerry and the Pacemakers, come rain or shine, and it’s a great afternoon out.

ARTS AND CULTURE

As the ‘world capital of pop’* and the birthplace of The Beatles, it comes as no surprise that a great music scene exists in this city. Every night of the week, every week of the year, there’s music to be heard all around Liverpool. Discover the city’s up-and-coming bands in live venues like LEAF and Zanzibar or find your favourite acts at Liverpool’s O2 Academy, Liverpool Guild of Students or Liverpool Olympia. There’s something to suit every taste, whether your playlists are full of hip-hop, electronic, jazz or rock’n’roll.

We have amazing festivals and events every year, that celebrate our diverse communities and our creative souls. The Liverpool Irish Festival, Liverpool Arab Arts Festival, DaDaFest, Brouhaha and Liverpool Pride to name a few. Light Night Liverpool is an awesome city takeover offering breathtaking light shows, art installations and street performances, with latenight opening of our museums and galleries. World-renowned classic and contemporary art collections find their homes at the Walker Art Gallery, Tate Liverpool, Open Eye Gallery, FACT, Bluecoat and the Liverpool Biennial.

Liverpool has a buzzing festival scene: Sound City, Liverpool Psych Fest, Africa Oyé, Homotopia, Brazilica, Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and Positive Vibration Reggae Festival.

FOOD AND DRINK Liverpool certainly has it all when it comes to food and drink. From specialist shops selling halal and kosher foods to the oldest Chinatown in Europe, you could munch your way through a whole world of cuisine and never have to eat the same dish twice! Home to cool cafés, world food supermarkets and excellent eateries to suit every taste and budget – you’re spoilt for choice. You can also take your pick of our many pubs, nightclubs, alcohol-free bars and coffee shops, where you can enjoy great conversation, music and much more.

SHOPPING We are all shopping on a budget, but no matter if yours is large or small, you’ll find what you are looking for in Liverpool. From the high street stores and designer outlets in Liverpool One and Met Quarter, to the independent boutiques on Bold Street or markets in the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool is the place to go shopping. Cool and quirky vintage stores are the hidden gems of the city’s student areas.

GREEN SPACES Parks and waterfront walks in Liverpool are firm favourites. Sefton Park, Festival Gardens, Otterspool Promenade, Princes Park, Calderstones Park and Greenbank offer perfect outdoor space all within easy reach of the city centre. Head further north to explore the beaches at Crosby, Formby and Southport.

SPORT FOR ALL We are really proud of our University teams who consistently compete and win many of the major titles in inter-university leagues and competitions. At John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU) there are plenty of clubs and societies you can join competitively or socially. We have American football, athletics, boxing, badminton, basketball, cricket, men’s and women’s Gaelic football, football, hockey, volleyball and rugby teams as well as lacrosse, netball, swimming, tennis and more. Our students can join our British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) teams and represent LJMU playing competitive sport against other universities. BUCS is the governing body for university sport in the United Kingdom and it gives you the chance to take your game to the next level.

LIVERPOOL LOVES SPORT Our passion for football runs deep; with three professional football teams in Merseyside – Liverpool FC, Everton FC and Tranmere Rovers – we love the game. However, worldclass sport in the region goes far beyond football. Merseyside is the golfing capital of England – boasting more than 40 courses, seven of which are leading championship venues, while the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club produces elite, international level athletes. It is also

the home of the Grand National, the Liverpool International Horse Show, the UK Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series and the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament. Liverpool hosted the British Gymnastics Championship Series and the Vitality Netball World Cup in 2019; and in 2021 hosts the Artistic Gymnastics British championships and the Rugby League World Cup Wheelchair Final.

Each year, LJMU students vote on who should represent them at university. Four, fulltime officers then lead your students’ union, representing and supporting your student voice.

What is a student officer? A student officer leads the Students’ Union (SU). We work closely with staff in the SU and in the university, on campaigns and projects that matter to students. We also attend various meetings with the university, including with the Vice-Chancellor, ensuring that the student voice is heard at every level at LJMU.

Being a student officer is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The leadership, communication and campaigning skills you gain give you a solid foothold for the next step in your career.

All our degrees are designed and delivered in a way that best suits the subject being taught, and the knowledge and skills you are expected to develop as part of your studies. During your induction, your tutors will outline what modules and topics you’ll be studying during your first year at LJMU. TUITION FEE STUDENT LOANS AND LOANS FOR LIVING COSTS You will be charged a tuition fee for each year of your course Tuition fees for 2021/22 have been confirmed as £9,250 per year. This fee is subject to an annual inflationary increase. There is no need to pay your tuition fees up front as eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan for each year of their course. This loan is not means tested which means your household income will not affect your eligibility. Your tuition fee loan will cover all of your tuition fee costs and will be paid direct to LJMU. See page 48 for information on loan repayments.

(MAINTENANCE LOAN) In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for a loan for your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and if you are living in your parental home or elsewhere. The following are the maximum loan rates for the 2021/22 year for a student from England*. n

You will pay for your accommodation on dates that coincide with your student maintenance payments, making it easier for you to plan your budget

Unlike the tuition fee loan which is paid direct to LJMU, maintenance loans are paid into your bank account. They are paid in three instalments and it’s up to you how it is spent – and also how you budget!

STUDENTS AND BENEFITS The majority of full-time students are not eligible for benefits while they are studying. Exceptions to this are: n lone parents with a dependent child/children. HOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME AFFECTS STUDENT FUNDING Some student funding is only allocated following an assessment of your household for 20/21 Tax Year (see table below). This process is called income assessment (or means testing) and if you are under 25 this is normally based on the income of your parents. n If your parents are divorced/separated, the income of the parent you live with most of the time will be used n If your parent cohabits or has remarried, the joint income will be assessed n If you meet one of the following criteria you will be treated as independent from your parents and their income: n n n n n n

REPAYING YOUR STUDENT LOANS Any loans you take out to cover your tuition fees or living costs will be added together into a single loan account. This means that when you start paying back your student loans, you will only make one affordable monthly payment. Your repayment amount is always the same, as it is based on a percentage of your salary not how much you have borrowed. If your income is over £27,295* your employer will start taking repayments from your salary just like tax and national insurance, and after 30 years any money still owed is written off. The table opposite will give you an idea of what your repayments might look like once you have left university and you’re earning over £27,295*:

n If your income falls below £27,295* (e.g. if you go travelling) your loan repayments will automatically stop n After 30 years anything you owe on your student loans is written off * £27,295 repayment threshold applies to students that normally live in England or Wales. HAVE YOU STUDIED BEFORE Student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required). Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons. It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. LJMU BURSARY LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500. LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you. To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum University tuition fee which is £9,250 for 2021/22 year.

STUDENT SUPPORT FUND Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances. LJMU’s Student Support Fund is available to students who find themselves in such a position.

DISABLED STUDENT ALLOWANCE (DSA) If you declare a disability or medical condition to LJMU, you can access specialist support and guidance to assist you during your studies. This can be anything from exam and study support to mobility and library support. The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is designed to help meet the extra course costs students can face as a direct result of a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or Specific Learning Difficulty. DSA is paid on top of the standard student finance package and does not have to be paid back. You should apply for DSA when you apply for your student funding - please don’t wait. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% certain which course you will be studying, as just like your application for student finance it is possible to update your DSA application at a later date. The Disability Advice Team at LJMU can help with all aspects of applying for DSA so please feel free to contact us at any point during the application process for help or advice.

STUDENTS WITH DEPENDANTS If you have either an adult who is financially dependent on you or dependant children, you can apply for additional funding including a grant for childcare. In addition, if you have an underlying eligibility for benefits (such as a lone parent) you can receive a higher rate of maintenance loan for living costs. A Childcare Grant will cover up to 85% of approved or accredited childcare in both term time and holidays. The Adult Dependants’ Grant is for students with a dependant partner and Parents Learning Allowance is a grant for those with children. All grants are means tested on your household income. SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS AND STUDENTS ESTRANGED FROM THEIR FAMILIES In 1957 John Lennon joined LJMU’s School of Art and Design, and it was to provide the springboard for so many influential aspects of his life: it was where he met Stuart Sutcliffe and would be visited by Paul McCartney. In recognition of the influence the University played in his life, and thanks to the generous support of Yoko Ono, LJMU has set up the John Lennon Imagine Awards to help students who have either been in local authority care or who are estranged from their parents. Eligible students receive a cash bursary of up to £1000 per year of their course, in addition to any funding awarded by your Leaving Care team. We also have a dedicated member of staff here to support students and offer advice on anything from university life and budgeting to student accommodation – and everything in between.

We don’t just award our scholarships to straight A students either (though academic ability is important); we are also interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show us that they are hardworking, passionate about something and a success at what they do. So what are you waiting for? ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP Rewards academic excellence (at least 3 A grades at A2 or equivalent – 144 UCAS points) 100 awards available, £1,000 per year for the duration of your course. – SIR BERT MASSIE SCHOLARSHIP Recognising Sir Bert Massie, national disability rights champion and former student of LJMU. We are looking to award an outstanding disabled student who has campaigned or championed inclusion in some way.

COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP For excellence in areas such as volunteering, sports, the arts or citizenship; a maximum of 100 awards of £1,000 per year for the duration of your course. – OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP This is a new scholarship to add to our current portfolio. The aim of the Opportunity Scholarship is to enhance diversity, supporting access, participation and outcomes of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who come to LJMU. It would be expected that applicants have participated fully in one of LJMU’s sustained outreach programmes to be eligible and applicants must meet the black and minority ethnic criteria to apply. – VICE-CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship has been introduced to recognise the diverse and inspiring nature of the LJMU student community. These high profile scholarships have been developed to reward the success of students that may have had a different and sometimes longer path into Higher Education or have overcome adversity in some way. So, if you are a care leaver, a young adult carer, disabled, (however, see Sir Bert Massie Scholarship), BAME or a mature student, we would love to hear from you. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BOOKING YOUR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

CONTRACTS

MONEY MATTERS

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found.

Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off!

Tenancies commence on Saturday, 17 September 2022 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 7 July 2023. Induction week for new students starts on 19 September and teaching begins on Thursday 22 September 2022.

It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford.

It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – for example Nursing or Midwifery – you will be given a full calendar year tenancy as standard. Don’t forget that you don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all cases.

MATURE STUDENTS

The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations. If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation.

HEALTHCARE STUDENTS

Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed! For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Atlantic Point, Glassworks, Marybone 1 or Marybone 3 and share their flat with students on similar courses. Limited parking is available for Paramedic students at Atlantic Point. Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing in January 2023 should check ljmu.ac.uk/ accommodation from January 2022 onwards to see what options are available.

Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST Once LJMU is your Firm (first) choice, you can submit your accommodation request via the applicant area of our website from 1 March 2022. Bedrooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis and you can submit your request regardless of whether you hold a conditional or unconditional offer.

FINALISE YOUR BOOKING Within 10 days of submitting your request you will be contacted by your chosen accommodation provider by email. You must follow their instructions and make the initial payment requested in order to finalise the booking of your room. If you hold a conditional offer from LJMU and are unsuccessful, any payment made for accommodation will be refunded and your tenancy agreement cancelled. You can contact our Accommodation Office at any time for advice and guidance.

Don’t forget, booking your room via the LJMU Accommodation Office is the only way to be sure of living with other new LJMU students.

ACCOMMODATION for

MOUNT PLEASANT STUDENTS The Mount Pleasant Campus is home to two Faculties: Business and Law | Arts, Professional and Social Studies

The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in these Faculties. St Luke’s View is an excellent, modern option for students located in the Mount Pleasant Campus, that opened at the start of the 2017/18 academic year. Capital Gate and and Albert Court are two good value en-suite options which are suitable for students at either main campus. Capital Gate has undergone a full redesign and refurbishment and it reopened in summer 2021. Grand Central is the liveliest of all the accommodation options. The vast majority of bedrooms feature private en-suite bathrooms but a few bedrooms are available in flats with shared bathrooms at a lower cost. There is also a free gym. Copperas House is the very newest option available as it opened in summer 2021. It is well located close to the new Student Life Building and will be suitable for students at either campus.

Horizon Heights and Hardman House are two of the newest options in this campus and both opened for the first time in August 2019. All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms and there is also a limited number of larger, premium rooms available at Hardman House. Grenville Street and The Arch are two modern, good value options, located with easy access to the trendy Ropewalks area and the shops and amenities of Liverpool One.

Agnes Jones House and St Andrew’s Gardens are excellent choices for students seeking good value accommodation as they feature flats with shared bathrooms. See map on inside back cover for accommodation locations.

CITY CAMPUS STUDENTS

The City Campus is home to three Faculties: Health | Science | Engineering and Technology

The following accommodation options are ideal for students undertaking courses in these Faculties. All sites are located within the City Campus and only a short walk from the city centre.

Students based in the City Campus can also choose accommodation based close to the Mount Pleasant Campus such as Grand Central, Horizon Heights, Capital Gate, Copperas House or Albert Court.

Marybone is a large three phase complex and is ideally located adjacent to the Avril Robarts Library and the Tithebarn Street building. Marybone 1 features flats with shared bathrooms and double beds at very reasonable weekly rents. Marybone 2 and 3 are almost identical and fully en-suite, fully en-suite and many flats at Marybone 3 are reserved for new healthcare students.

Glassworks and Byrom Point are two newer accommodation sites located within the City Campus and are both fully en-suite. Both sites have a gym, common room and study area. Atlantic Point is located opposite the Byrom Street teaching buildings and is one of the largest sites offered to new students. It has a large number of parking spaces. Moorfield is located directly across the road from the Avril Robarts Library and offers good value en-suite rooms and a limited number of parking spaces.
