The best part of the Applicant Day was meeting the students and the tutors. We were taken into the clinical suite to have a look around and also had an informative talk on the course. LJMU had a lovely atmosphere and I was made to feel very welcome and comfortable. NICOLA FISHWICK

For me, living in student accommodation is a great way to move out for the first time and have your first real taste of independence. All your bills are included, which takes away the hassle, plus you get to meet so many people from different courses and backgrounds. I love the hustle and bustle of being in the city centre; there is always something to do on your doorstep!

MY ADVICE FOR NEW STUDENTS:

1 2 3

Be friendly with your flat mates and share certain foods, bread, salt, etc. so you don’t let food go to waste. Clean as you go - it keeps mess to a minimum and makes your job easier. Don’t suffer in silence - if you are struggling with anything talk to staff or Residential Assistants!

ACCOMMODATION

What you need to know when booking your student accommodation.

CONTRACTS

MONEY MATTERS

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legally binding for the full period once signed. So unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled, you are liable for rent until the end of the contract or until a replacement is found.

Rent is paid in three equal instalments that coincide with your student funding payments if you are a UK student, who can provide a guarantor*, so it is important that you apply for your student funding as soon as possible – don’t put this off!

Tenancies commence on Friday 13 September 2019 and finish 42 weeks later on Friday 3 July 2020. Induction week for new students starts on 16 September and teaching begins on Monday 23 September 2019. It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your course does not match the standard academic year – e.g. nursing – you can usually extend the tenancy period over the summer. Don’t forget that you don’t have to move out over the Christmas and Easter breaks, the room is yours for the duration of your contract. You can also stay on after your first year in all our Halls if you wish.

It is a good idea to try and work out your budget at this stage and choose your accommodation according to what you can afford. More information about student funding can be found on pages 33-41. If you have any concerns about money and student accommodation, please contact our Accommodation Office. accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 4166

*Your guarantor will most likely be a parent or guardian, and they must agree to act in this capacity.

21

MATURE STUDENTS The majority of students entering accommodation come to university straight from school or college and are under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of our city centre locations. If you do have any particular requests, such as living in a flat with older students, please indicate this on your accommodation request form. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannot be guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, contact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) liverpoolstudenthomes.org/ accommodation.

HEALTHCARE STUDENTS Nursing, midwifery and paramedic students have different schedules due to placement work, often getting up when other students are going to bed! For this reason we strongly recommend healthcare students choose Marybone 3 and share their flat with students on similar courses. Rooms at Marybone 3 will also be available if your course starts earlier than the standard academic calendar. Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing January – March 2020 should check ljmu.ac.uk/ accommodation to see what options are available.

DISABLED STUDENTS Accommodation facilities for students with disabilities are constantly improving and LJMU is committed to ensure a high standard of living for all students, whatever your needs. If you require accommodation with particular adaptations it is important that you inform us as soon as possible so that the necessary arrangements can be made. We can also arrange for you to visit our accommodation to check that it will meet your needs. To discuss further contact our Disability Advice team. disability@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3164/3165

BOOKING YOUR ACCOMMODATION

1 3 2 MAKE YOUR CHOICE Read the information here and online ljmu.ac.uk/accommodation and decide where you would like to live.

FINALISE YOUR BOOKING Within 10 days of submitting your request you will be contacted by your chosen accommodation provider by email. You must follow their instructions and make the initial payment requested in order to finalise the booking of your room. If you hold a conditional offer from LJMU and are unsuccessful, any payment made for accommodation will be refunded and your tenancy agreement cancelled.

SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST Once LJMU is your Firm (first) choice, you can submit your accommodation request using our simple online form. The form will be available on our website from 1 February 2019. Bedrooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis and you can submit your request regardless of whether you hold a conditional or unconditional offer.

You can contact our Accommodation Office at any time for advice and guidance.

Don’t forget, booking your room via the LJMU Accommodation Office is the only way to be sure of living with other new LJMU students.

SOPHIE QUAYLE, AN APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATE, WAS A PROGRAMME ASSISTANT AT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PLACED DURING AN LJMU-FUNDED INTERNSHIP.

As a Programme Assistant I worked closely with the PLACED Director and delivery team to develop education and consultation programmes to teach a wide range of people across the North West about architecture and the built environment. I supported two core projects: an Easter School workshop for young people to gain an insight into urban design and planning and an outreach programme to

raise awareness about the value of people having a voice in their built environment. I wanted to do this internship because I know how important it is to build up as much experience as possible during the time you are at university and to make yourself stand out from other candidates. I also thought the role sounded very interesting and felt I could demonstrate all the essential skills they were asking for.

CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP Thanks to our award-winning Centre for Entrepreneurship, LJMU can offer expert business advice and start-up funding to students and graduates setting up new companies. This includes all the training, one-to-one support and connections you will need to get your venture off the ground.

SELF-MADE MEDIA PROFESSIONAL James Lyall is a freelance filmmaker and Media Production student at LJMU. James attended Start-Up School and Idealab and has made his first independent documentary, Believe in Bees, with the help of a £250 Try It Out Award from the Bathgate Start-Up Fund. The Centre for Entrepreneurship will work with him as he grows his client base, develops his craft and works towards achieving his ambition of success in media production. WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS IDEA? As a freelance filmmaker, the next step for me would be having a team of people that can collectively create productions. Terraflux aims to be a sustainable film production company that has as little impact on the environment as possible. Our ethos is to take steps to ensure that we do not harm wildlife,

create excess waste, or work with unethical companies. I hope to one day run a production company that is carbon neutral, and benefits the world whilst making films. WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR YOUR BUSINESS? After starting pre-production for our debut documentary film Believe in Bees, I found that there are lots of companies in the UK that give back to either society, a charity, or the environment. Seeing this has inspired me to do something similar – a production company with strong ethical values.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FUTURE LJMU ENTREPRENEURS? 1. Listen to the Centre for Entrepreneurship team, they’re amazing. 2. Entrepreneurship is a lifestyle; it’s not for everyone and takes a lot of passion. 3. Your first business idea may not be the right one, be willing to adapt and change it.

@Terrafluxproductions

HOW IS LJMU HELPING YOU? My Media Production degree is helping me build the skills needed to work in the film industry, while the Centre for Entrepreneurship is helping me build skills that I need to run my own business.

We want you to start your university experience with LJMU as you mean to go on: equipped with all the information you need and fully supported. That’s why our dedicated team of friendly, expert advisers have put together some essential guidance relating to student funding. We have tried to cover the key facts and figures but if you have any questions, please just ask.

36

All figures relate to 2018/19 unless stated otherwise. Please note that different funding arrangements will apply if you are from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the EU.

moneyadvice@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3153/3154

EU Applicants The Government has recently announced that if your permanent home is in the EU and you wish to study at undergraduate level at an English university, starting in 2019, you will be eligible for a non-means tested loan to cover your tuition fees in full. You will not normally be eligible for funding for your living costs; however certain exceptions exist such as students that have lived here for five years or more, or are here as workers. Please contact us for more information. Also take a look at gov.uk/studentfinance

TUITION FEES AND LOANS You will be charged a tuition fee for each year of your course In 2019/20 the University will charge full time, home, undergraduate students a tuiton fee of ÂŁ9,250*. This fee is subject to an annual inflationary increase.

There is no need to pay your tuition fees up front as eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan for each year of their course. This loan is not means tested which means your household income will not affect your eligibility. Your tuition fee loan will cover all of your tuition fee costs and will be paid direct to LJMU. See page 38 for information on loan repayments.

TIPS ON BANK ACCOUNTS Shop around for the best bank account for you and, if this is a bank near home, make sure you know how to access the account while you are away studying. Set up online banking so you are in control of your money while you are away. Make sure you do this before you start your course. Most students say that the interest free overdraft is the most useful thing about their student bank account. There may be times in the year you need this. You can pay it back over the summer if you are working and then use it again in years two and three if you need to. You will normally need to download your acceptance letter from UCAS after confirmation before the bank will open a student account for you.

*Subject to parliamentary approval.

37

STUDENT FUNDING FOR LIVING COSTS In addition to a tuition fee loan, you can also apply for money to help towards your living costs. The amount you will be eligible to receive depends on a number of factors such as your household income and where you live during term time.

The maximum amount you will be eligible to receive while studying at LJMU is £6,428**. Unlike the tuition fee loan which is paid direct to LJMU, this money will be paid into your bank account. It’s paid in three instalments and it’s up to you how it is spent – and also how you budget! TIP: Once you have paid your rent, work out how many weeks until your next loan and grant payment and then you will know approximately how much per week you have to live off.

YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR ACCOMMODATION ON DATES THAT COINCIDE WITH YOUR STUDENT MAINTENANCE PAYMENTS, MAKING IT EASIER FOR YOU TO PLAN YOUR BUDGET

HOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME AFFECTS STUDENT FUNDING Funding for living costs is paid to you following an assessment of your household income, this process is called income assessment (or means testing) and if you are under 25 this is normally based on the income of your parents. This table** will give you an overview of how much money you will receive based on your household income. You can also look at the calculator on studentfinanceni.co.uk

HAVE YOU STUDIED BEFORE?

LJMU BURSARY

Student funding is generally available for the length of your course, plus an additional year (if required). Additional funding may be available for students that have had to leave a course due to health problems or for other personal reasons.

LJMU bursaries are automatically paid to eligible students every year of your course – you do not need to apply. The annual LJMU bursary is currently £500.

It is really important that you seek advice if you have studied previously. We can clarify exactly how your prior study will impact on your future entitlement and advise you what steps to take to maximise any funding available.

Speak to us in confidence: moneyadvice@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3153/3154

LJMU bursaries are additional, free money that you don’t have to pay back. How you spend it is up to you. To qualify you must meet the residence requirements for student funding (grants and loans) and have a household income of £25,000/year or less. You must also be paying the annual maximum University tuition fee which is £9,250 for 2019/20.

STUDENT SUPPORT FUND Sometimes despite your best efforts you can find yourself in financial difficulty. This could be due to a delay in funding or unforeseen circumstances. LJMU’s Student Support Fund is available to students who find themselves in such a position.

DISABLED STUDENT ALLOWANCE (DSA) If you declare a disability or medical condition to LJMU, you can access specialist support and guidance to assist you during your studies. This can be anything from exam and study support to mobility and library support. The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is designed to help meet the extra course costs students can face as a direct result of a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or Specific Learning Difficulty. DSA is paid on top of the standard student finance package and does not have to be paid back. You should apply for DSA when you apply for your student funding - please don’t wait. Don’t worry if you’re not 100% certain which course you will be studying, as just like your application for student finance it is possible to update your DSA application at a later date. The Disability Advice team at LJMU can help with all aspects of applying for DSA so please feel free to contact us at any point during the application process for help or advice.

disability@ljmu.ac.uk 0151 231 3164/3165

STUDENTS WITH DEPENDANTS If you have either an adult who is financially dependent on you or dependant children, you can apply for additional funding including a grant for childcare. In addition, if you have an underlying eligibility for benefits (such as a lone parent) you can receive a higher rate of maintenance loan for living costs. A Childcare Grant will cover up to 85% of approved or accredited childcare in both term time and holidays. The Adult Dependants’ Grant is for students with a dependant partner and Parents Learning Allowance is a grant for those with children.

The John Lennon Imagine Awards provide extra support for young people who perhaps need it most. I am delighted to have been able to set up these awards in John’s name… he genuinely would have wanted to have helped these students achieve their personal goals. YOKO ONO

SUPPORT FOR CARE LEAVERS AND STUDENTS ESTRANGED FROM THEIR FAMILIES

In 1957 John Lennon joined LJMU’s School of Art and Design, and it was to provide the springboard for so many influential aspects of his life: it was where he met Stuart Sutcliffe and Paul McCartney. In recognition of the influence the University played in his life, and thanks to the generous support of Yoko Ono, LJMU has set up the John Lennon Imagine Awards to help students who have either been in local authority care or who are estranged from their parents. Eligible students receive a cash bursary of £1,000 per year of their course, in addition to funding awarded by social services for looked after children (LAC) if applicable. We also have a dedicated member of staff here to support you and offer advice on everything from university life, budgeting to student accommodation – and anything in between.

UNITE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS LJMU is delighted to be working with the Unite Foundation to offer a number of students free accommodation for the duration of their programme. Priority for the Unite Foundation Scholarship scheme is given to students who are estranged from their families. Contact us for more information.

YOUNG ADULT CARERS

LJMU is committed to supporting young adult carers and currently works in partnership with Barnardos Young Adult Carers Service in Liverpool. Our dedicated member of staff for young adult carers can provide you with further information and advise you on what support is available.

SCHOLARSHIPS We believe everyone is good at something, and want to reward your success.

LJMU scholarships are worth an extra £1,000 or £10,000 in additional funding and they are awarded for every year of your degree. How would you spend yours?

Whether it’s a new laptop, help with accommodation costs or learning how to drive – how you spend your scholarship money is up to you. We don’t just award our scholarships to straight A students either (though academic ability is important); we are more interested in awarding scholarships to students who can show us that they are hardworking, passionate about something and a success at what they do. I always wanted to go to a university outside of Northern Ireland, as I knew this would allow me to become more independent and open up a lot more opportunities. It was from the day I attended the Applicant Day in Belfast, where LJMU became my first choice. TRAVELLING TO LIVERPOOL FROM NORTHERN IRELAND Liverpool is easily accessible, whether you choose to fly or take the ferry. There are numerous daily and weekly flights departing from Belfast City Airport, City of Derry Airport and Belfast International Airport - we are only a 30-minute flight away. When you land at Liverpool John Lennon Airport you can jump on a bus outside the airport terminal, to take you directly to the city centre in just 20 minutes. Visit the airport website for further details: liverpoolairport.com If you arrive by ferry, you will disembark at Birkenhead Ferry Port (Twelve Quays Ferry Terminal, Birkenhead CH41 1FE) which is on the Wirral peninsula. If you are travelling by car it will then take just 10 minutes to reach Liverpool city centre from Birkenhead, travelling through either one of the two Merseytunnels. If you are a foot passenger, Hamilton Square railway station is a 15 minute walk away from the ferry terminal, allowing you to complete your journey to Liverpool city centre in just 5 minutes by train. Taxis are also widely available.

I wanted to move away for university, but I wanted it to be easy to get back home if I needed to. Liverpool seemed like the perfect city with great travel links to Belfast. MAYA DESHPANDE, BELFAST
