La Jolla Country Day School Middle School Band & Orchestra Ensembles Liesl Hansen has been directing the Middle School Bands at La Jolla Country Day since 2007. She began playing French horn in fifth grade and began her studies with Dr. Louis Stout, University of Michigan, and Dr. Willard Zirk, Eastern Michigan University. Ms. Hansen graduated with Honors from Michigan State University in 2007 with her degree in Music Education. She studied horn with Professor Janine Gaboury, and spent a semester abroad in Vienna, Austria where she studied under Wolfgang Tรถmbeck, Principal Soloist for the Vienna Philharmonic. While at University Ms. Hansen played third horn for the Traverse Symphony, performed for a season with Ohio Light Opera, and was also a featured soloist with Michigan State s Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Richard Strauss First Horn Concerto. Ms. Hansen continues to perform with local groups such as the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra and Hornswoggle, an Joe Rowling and Liesl Hansen ensemble made up entirely of French horn players. Conductors Joe Rowling has directed the Middle School Strings at La Jolla Country Day since 2007. A native San Diegan, Mr. Rowling began LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL studying violin and piano at age seven. In middle school, he switched from playing violin to viola. Mr. Rowling studied piano MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND & with Rinna Livshin and viola with William Pordon. ORCHESTRA ENSEMBLES In 2007 Mr. Rowling graduated magna cum laude from the Violin Clarinet University of Southern California s Thornton school of music. During Leila Bitarafan Clara Valenzuela his time at USC, Mr. Rowling served as principal violist of the USC Neda Fashandi Concert Orchestra and studied piano with Lucinda Carver and Kirill Trombone Gliadkovsky. He also participated in Thornton s Outreach program Cello Garan Comfort teaching music classes in an elementary school that did not have a Ryan Hosey Arya Massarat music program. Mr. Rowling is now in his fifth year at Country Day, Emily Gudmudson teaches privately, performs with a quartet and is a member of the Emma Halpern Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra. David Kunczynski About the Music Program The Performing Arts have a strong presence at La Jolla Country Day School with a continuous music curriculum from the elementary through high school levels. We are especially proud of the fact that more than twothirds of our Middle School students participate in band, orchestra or choir. Country Day truly is the school of the Scholar, Artist, and Athlete of Character! It is exciting to be a part of this performance with YAS and we look forward to possible future collaborations.
