Executive Director s Message On behalf of the San Diego Young Artists Symphony and its Board of Trustees, I welcome you to the second annual San Diego Young Artists Symphony Ensembles & Friends Concert, A Salute to the Music of the Movies, a unique concept in youth orchestral performance. SDYAS will be playing side-by-side with our invited guests from eight orchestras and bands of schools from all points of San Diego County as we join together to perform a rich universe of musical scores. This concert is just part of the SDYAS contribution to the cultural life of San Diego, and I would like to take this opportunity to update you on some of the highlights since we last met in Copley a year ago. Not only did we continue our traditional classical music concerts that we began in 1995 at venues like the Neurosciences Institute, Buddhist Temple, and Church of Mary Magdalene in the spring, but we also initiated a Summer Chamber Music Camp, Music in the Mountains, in Pine Valley. In the summer of 2012 we will repeat this educational and fun experience under the sun and stars from July 9 to 13. Last season also brought brilliant virtuoso violinist Philippe Quint, who dazzled our students in a master class, as well as coaching sessions by musicians from the San Diego Symphony, and an inspiring workshop with newly appointed SDYAS Artistic Advisor Jung-Ho Pak, who is also the Artistic Director and Conductor of Orchestra Nova. The Young Artists Symphony has also greatly expanded its programs of service to the larger community. Our chamber groups visited area schools, the Del Mar Fair, San Diego Botanic Garden and dozens of retirement homes reaching people who cannot usually attend concerts such as this one today. Sometimes the reactions of our audiences are unpredictable. One of the activities directors at a retirement home put it this way, My residents kept talking about you days after the performance a pleasant surprise for families who think mom or dad has no short term memory. It is all about the sharing. Our youngsters cherish their audiences as much as the audiences cherish them. On this special occasion, I also would like to thank the other stars in our SDYAS galaxy, the people whose gargantuan efforts make this concert as well as all our events possible: our devoted Board of Directors, our skilled, talented and caring artistic staff, our young artists -- and I would like to add special thanks to our awesome parents who not only tote our young artists back and forth from rehearsal every Saturday, encourage their children to practice, but also help with the numerous details of creating the top-notch youth orchestra of the region. Our parents deserve a round of applause as much as their talented youngsters -- kudos for a job well-done! Bravissimo! We look forward to a stellar year in 2012! The new year includes a visit and master class by virtuoso violinist, Augustin Hadelich, another workshop with Maestro Pak, more community involvement and our culminating concert of the year on June 3, at the Garfield Theatre at the Jewish Community Center. But today, we mingle here in Copley Symphony Hall, a place originally constructed as a theater for motion pictures, to share some magical moments with our children. San Diego Young Artists Advanced Symphony Hernan Constantino has worked with San Diego Young Artists Symphony for seven years. He now serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras. Born and raised in the Philippines Mr. Constantino was inspired to take violin lessons because of his father's love of the instrument. He began his studies when he was eight years old under the tutelage of the late Professor Luis Valencia. At age 11 he became a scholar of the Music Promotion Foundation of the Philippines and at age 15, having recently joined the newly formed Cultural Center of the Philippines Philharmonic Orchestra, won first prize in the National Young Artists Competition. As a result, he was invited to perform for the President and Mrs. Marcos. At nineteen, he left the Philippines for the United States, upon receiving a full scholarship to the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. He continued his violin studies under Dorothy DeLay, Hyo Kang and William DePasquale; chamber music under Joseph and William DePasquale; and conducting under Joseph Primavera. He has worked with famous conductors such as Ricardo Muti, Eugene Ormandy, and Klaus Tensthdeth.

About the Music Program Young Artists Symphony (Advanced Symphony) is a full-size orchestra which plays complete symphonies and other large orchestral works. Students in this orchestra learn how to rehearse and perform in a professional orchestra setting with rigorous standards. Some of these musicians also perform as Concerto Soloist and qualify by audition.

Hernan Constantino While in Philadelphia he held the position of principal second violin for seven seasons and also served as a substitute concertmaster for the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra. Mr. Constantino was seated as concertmaster at the Trump Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City in addition to serving as the violin and chamber music instructor at the New Jersey School of Music. After moving to Portland Oregon in 1986, he became a first violinist in the Portland Opera Orchestra, first violinist and soloist with the West Coast Chamber Orchestra, and a substitute violinist with the Oregon Symphony as well as a founding member of the "New Oregon String Quartet," presenting contemporary and 20th century music. In 1988, he held the position of Interim Music Director of Oregon State University-Corvallis Symphony as well as a violin professor and founding member of the "Metolious" String Quartet, the quartet-in-residence, at Oregon State University. In 1990, Mr. Constantino won a position with the San Diego Symphony and in 1991 was assigned Acting Associate Concertmaster. He has lived and worked here ever since. Presently, he is also a member of the San Diego Opera Orchestra and Orchestra Nova. From the summers of 1995 to 2009 he served as Concertmaster of the Oregon Coast Music Festival in Coos Bay, Oregon, and as a guest conductor in 2010. In 2008, Mr. Constantino was invited to conduct at the Interlochen Music Camp as well as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra in the Philippines. Mr. Constantino also teaches violin privately at his studio, SoloSoli, and is an active member in the Music Teachers Association of California. About the Music Program Intermediate Symphony -- Mr. Constantino accepts young, intermediate musicians and develops them into promising Young Artists. With a few years of growth, dedication and confidence, students learn the disciplines and responsibilities required for orchestra performance. The Intermediate Symphony contributes to YAS's future strings, winds, brass, and percussion sections.

Camerata Ensemble Jane Gayle Frey, Program Director for Camerata and Suzuki Ensemble s, has served San Diego Young Artists Symphony for 5 years. Presently she holds the position of Associate Music Director and Program Director of the Suzuki and Camerata ensembles. Miss Jane is an SAA registered Suzuki Pedagogy teacher who holds an Early Childhood Credential in Suzuki Pedagogy. Miss Jane began her music studies at age 5 in Houston, Texas. By age 15, she was playing, teaching and writing music professionally. In high school, Miss Jane served as piano accompanist and teaching assistant to Donna Rogers, founding director of the Frostwood Elementary Suzuki String Program. Miss Jane holds a degree in Music Theory from Baylor University with concentrations in Piano and Viola performance. While at Baylor, Miss Jane served as Principal Violist in the Baylor Symphony and began her professional recording career with Word Records. She served as piano accompanist and teaching assistant to Dr. Julia Obrecht Hardie, founding director of the Baylor Suzuki String Program.

About the Music Program Camerata Strings is a level 1-2 orchestra. Camerata students experience orchestral playing in four part harmony from Classical Orchestral Literature. With an emphasis on scales, arpeggios and developing sight reading skills, Camerata students prepare for advancement into the YAS full intermediate orchestra. Camerata Strings performs at least twice a year with all YAS ensembles.

Jane Frey She continued her postgraduate study in viola performance with Ellen Rose, Dallas Symphony principal violist. Miss Jane performed with the Dallas Ballet Orchestra, the Dallas Opera Orchestra, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and the Boston Ballet Orchestra. As a crossover artist, Miss Jane has performed live with renowned artists from Itzhak Perlman and Nathaniel Rosen, to James Taylor and Andrea Bocelli, and even recorded an album with the rock group YES! In demand as a guest conductor, master class teacher and workshop instructor throughout the US, Miss Jane has been teaching violin, viola and piano from Pre-School to Collegiate levels for over 30 years. Specializing in transitioning violinists into successful violists, 100 percent of Jane's viola students have received partial or full college music scholarships. Prior to her current position as YAS Associate Director, Miss Jane was named Master Teacher and Professor of Viola at Point Loma Nazarene University. She also served as Director of Orchestras at the Newton (MA) Suzuki School and Founding Director of the Irving (TX) Suzuki Institute. In addition to directing YAS Suzuki Strings and Camerata Strings, Miss Jane maintains a private studio, substitutes in the San Diego Symphony and Orchestra Nova, and works regularly as a studio musician in the recording and motion picture industry in Southern California.Miss Jane can be seen on KPBS in March performing with Billy McGlaghlin and Orchestra Nova. About the Music Program Suzuki Ensembles -- YAS provides a unique opportunity for students as young as 3 years old to learn to play the violin. Through the disciplined structure of Saturday rehearsal classes and daily practice, young YAS students learn to play as soloists, perform unison parts in an ensemble setting with piano accompaniment and develop a FrancoBelgian bow hold, the current bow hold used by students, teachers and professionals. Advanced Suzuki Students prepare for advancement into Camerata Strings and act as mentors to their assigned, Beginning Suzuki, student buddies. Jung-Ho Pak SDYAS Artistic Advisor Described by the New York Times as a conductor who "radiates enthusiasm" and the Los Angeles Times as "a real grabber", Jung-Ho Pak is known for his unique vision of the role of classical music. Orchestra Nova San Diego appointed Mr. Pak as Artistic Director and Conductor in 2006, and in 2007 he was named Artistic Director and Conductor of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra (second largest in Massachusetts to the Boston Symphony Orchestra). Since 2003, he has been Director of Orchestras and Music Director of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Mr. Pak is also Music Director Emeritus of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. As Music Director of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra (1997-2002), Mr. Pak led the orchestra from bankruptcy to an unprecedented financial success. As a nationally recognized educator, he served as Music Director with the University of Southern California (USC) Symphony and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Orchestra. He has also served as Principal Conductor of the Emmy-nominated Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and as Music Director of the Debut Orchestra, International Chamber Orchestra, NEXT Chamber Orchestra, Colburn Chamber Orchestra, and Diablo Ballet. Guest conducting has taken him to Europe, the Soviet Union, South America and Asia. San Diego Young Artists Symphony Community Outreach Program This year YAS has extended its outreach to dozens of schools, community recreation centers and retirement homes throughout the City and County of San Diego touching the lives of children, the elderly and others who cannot normally attend a concert of live classical music in a traditional concert hall. Chula Vista High School Spartan String Orchestra Dr. Conrad D. Bruderer is currently the Director of Orchestras for the Chula Vista School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the Sweetwater Union High School District and String Specialist for National School District. Under the direction of Dr. Bruderer, his ensembles have earned numerous excellent and superior awards at adjudicated festivals throughout Southern California. Several of his students have continued at the university level, pursuing music careers of their own. Dr. Bruderer was honored as the recipient of the 2010 Profiles in Music Education Award by the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. Dr. Bruderer holds the Ph.D. degree from the University of California, San Diego, having earned Bachelor and Master of Music Dr. Conrad Bruderer degrees in Viola Performance from San Diego State Conductor University and The Wichita State University, respectively. He has previously served on the music faculties of Southwestern College, Children s Creative and Performing Arts Academy, and Bethel College in Newton, Kansas. Del Norte High School Concert Band Jennifer Kitelinger is the Director of Instrumental Music at Del Norte High School in the Poway Unified School District. Prior to her appointment at Del Norte High School, she taught at Westview High School as Co-Director of Bands, spent five years teaching middle and high school in the Pennsylvania public school system, and served for one year as the assistant conductor of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, a professional wind band based in the DallasFort Worth metroplex. Mrs. Kitelinger received a bachelor of science in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and studied Jennifer Kitelinger conducting with Jack Stamp. She received her Conductor Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of North Texas, where she studied conducting with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. She is currently finishing her doctor of musical arts degree in wind conducting from the University of North Texas. Mrs. Kitelinger has been a recording production assistant for the critically-acclaimed GIA Windworks series, the GIA Composer s Collection, Naxos Wind Band Classics, and the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. She is published in five volumes of the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series as the author of six teacher resource guides of wind band repertoire for beginning through advanced levels.
About the Music Program As one of the newest music programs in San Diego, the award-winning Del Norte High School music program has expanded quickly in the last two and a half years. The music program is designed to give music students a variety of opportunities to experience the many facets and genres of musical performance through participation in the concert band, marching band, jazz band, orchestra, winter drum line, color guard and winter guard.

Carlsbad High School & Aviara Oaks Middle School Marina Hall has been the Orchestra Director at Carlsbad High School and Aviara Oaks Middle School since 2007. She began playing violin in the second grade in the Carlsbad Strings Education Association program then began private instruction with Bridget Dolkas and Hernan Constantino. At CHS under Gunnar Biggs, she served as Concertmaster for 4 years while also performing with San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra and accompanied them on their European tour. In 2007, Miss Hall graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, participating in USC's Symphony and Chamber Orchestra. She Marina Hall played with special honorees Randy Conductor Newman, Bobby McFerrin, Robert Mann, and Burt Bacharach for Thornton Dickens Dinners. Miss Hall has also played with soloists Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman. She has also performed in Yamaha s NAMM Show, accompanying artists Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, John Legend, Isaac Slade, Sara Bareilles, Natalie Cole, Vince Gill, Michael McDonald, and John Ondrasik. While at USC she served as Program Coordinator for the Thornton Outreach Program, working with the Midori Center for Community Engagement and House of Blues Guitar Masters program. MIss Hall continues to play the violin for summer musicals at Vista s Moonlight Amphitheater. She has recently completed her Masters in Music Education Degree from USC.

Carlsbad High School About 65 CHS students participate in two string orchestras. The Chamber Orchestra, comprised of perform four 9-12th, concerts per year at Cultural Arts CHS Center as well as Music in the Parks Festivals each spring. The CHS Orchestra attends Heritage Festivals, most notably performing in Carnegie Hall in 2009.

About the Music Program Aviara Oaks Middle School The string orchestra program at AOMS has about 100 students in three string orchestras. The Advanced Orchestra, comprised of 7th and 8th graders, performs four concerts per year at Carlsbad High School s Cultural Arts Center as well as one performance at Disneyland each April.

La Jolla Country Day School Middle School Band & Orchestra Ensembles Liesl Hansen has been directing the Middle School Bands at La Jolla Country Day since 2007. She began playing French horn in fifth grade and began her studies with Dr. Louis Stout, University of Michigan, and Dr. Willard Zirk, Eastern Michigan University. Ms. Hansen graduated with Honors from Michigan State University in 2007 with her degree in Music Education. She studied horn with Professor Janine Gaboury, and spent a semester abroad in Vienna, Austria where she studied under Wolfgang Tรถmbeck, Principal Soloist for the Vienna Philharmonic. While at University Ms. Hansen played third horn for the Traverse Symphony, performed for a season with Ohio Light Opera, and was also a featured soloist with Michigan State s Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Richard Strauss First Horn Concerto. Ms. Hansen continues to perform with local groups such as the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra and Hornswoggle, an Joe Rowling and Liesl Hansen ensemble made up entirely of French horn players. Conductors Joe Rowling has directed the Middle School Strings at La Jolla Country Day since 2007. A native San Diegan, Mr. Rowling began LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL studying violin and piano at age seven. In middle school, he switched from playing violin to viola. Mr. Rowling studied piano MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND & with Rinna Livshin and viola with William Pordon. ORCHESTRA ENSEMBLES In 2007 Mr. Rowling graduated magna cum laude from the Violin Clarinet University of Southern California s Thornton school of music. During Leila Bitarafan Clara Valenzuela his time at USC, Mr. Rowling served as principal violist of the USC Neda Fashandi Concert Orchestra and studied piano with Lucinda Carver and Kirill Trombone Gliadkovsky. He also participated in Thornton s Outreach program Cello Garan Comfort teaching music classes in an elementary school that did not have a Ryan Hosey Arya Massarat music program. Mr. Rowling is now in his fifth year at Country Day, Emily Gudmudson teaches privately, performs with a quartet and is a member of the Emma Halpern Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra. David Kunczynski About the Music Program The Performing Arts have a strong presence at La Jolla Country Day School with a continuous music curriculum from the elementary through high school levels. We are especially proud of the fact that more than twothirds of our Middle School students participate in band, orchestra or choir. Country Day truly is the school of the Scholar, Artist, and Athlete of Character! It is exciting to be a part of this performance with YAS and we look forward to possible future collaborations.
Palm Middle School and Vista La Mesa Academy As a music professional, Jessica Runck recognizes the unique opportunities that youth orchestras provide to young musicians. She began her first orchestral experience with the Mankato Area Youth Symphony as a bassoonist. At the age of 16 she started performing with the Mankato State University Symphony Orchestra while studying with Dr. John Lindberg. In addition to area orchestras she also participated in numerous festivals and honor ensembles. Inspired by her early experience in Jessica Runck orchestras, Ms. Runck received her Conductor Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Western Illinois University. In December 2002, she was recognized as the WIU Music Departmental Scholar and graduated with honors. During her time at WIU she studied bassoon with Dr. Douglas Huff and worked for the University Bands. Upon graduation she taught general music, band, and choir at the Ohio Community School District. In 2003, she joined the Stark County Community School District and taught elementary, junior high, and high school band. She earned her Master of Music Education Degree from Illinois State University in 2007. At ISU she studied bassoon with Michael Dicker and was a graduate assistant for the orchestra and music department. She joined the Young Artist Symphony as Orchestra Coordinator in 2009 after moving to San Diego from Illinois. Ms. Runck started teaching band and orchestra for the Lemon Grove School District in 2010. In addition to her teaching she also coaches woodwind and brass ensembles and performs in area orchestras.
About the Music Program The Lemon Grove School District Instrumental Music Program is a comprehensive program which includes students from fifth through eighth grade. Prized for its long tradition of musical excellence, this program provides students with an opportunity to learn wind, string, and percussion instruments. Musicians perform on-site concerts throughout the school year as well as participating in community events and festivals. This program is supported by dedicated administrators, parents, and talented students.

Marc Dwyer is in his 8th year of teaching and is currently the Director of Instrumental Music at Correia Middle School in San Diego. His current class load consists of three levels of band (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced), Intermediate Guitar Ensemble, Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and the before school Jazz Program. Mr. Dwyer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and holds a Bachelors degree from Juilliard, a Masters in Performance from Northwestern University, and a Masters in Education with Certification from Northern Illinois University. In 2004, Mr. Dwyer began teaching for the San Diego Unified School District at Kroc Middle School and has spent the past 6 years growing the instrumental program at Correia Middle School. Mr. Dwyer was recognized as a San Diego Unified School District, Teacher of the Year in 2009 and was the 2010 recipient of the David Paul Schuchman Award for Excellence in Music Education. Mr. Dwyer still enjoys performing professionally as a freelance artist in San Diego and with the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra.
About the Music Program Correia Middle School has an active music program that offers String Orchestra, Guitar, Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz, and three levels of Band. Mr. Dwyer's student ensembles have been featured on the KUSI News, Jazz 88 Radio, SignOn San Diego and the Union Tribune. They've performed with legendary artists such as the Dallas Brass, Brian Lynch, Rob Mullins, Bill Watrous, Delfeayo Marsalis, as well as the San Diego Symphony. His ensembles consistently receive Excellent and Superior ratings at local and National music festivals.
