What is the first sign of spring at your home?
JENNIFER DOUGLAS
CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF LIVING LUXE
The first sign of spring in my home is often a burst of fresh flowers! I love bringing in some early blooms like tulips. They bring such a vibrant pop of colour and a sense of life into the space after the winter months. I also like to open the windows for a bit of fresh air and let the sunlight flood in.
EVE THOMAS
WRITER
I moved recently and finally have a little garden, so last fall I stuffed every inch of it with snowdrops and crocus bulbs. Those flowers have always been what keeps me going when we get that final, awful snowstorm in April in Montreal. They don’t last, but they let you know winter is almost done.

For me, the first real sign of spring is that fresh spring smell in the air—like the earth is waking up after a long nap! The sunlight feels warmer, the evenings are brighter and I start hearing birds singing early in the morning. It’s that little shift when winter doesn’t feel so heavy anymore and hope springs eternal. It’s like the Friday of a weekend, when all the warm weather memories to make are all ahead of us.

The first sign of spring is a deep clean, followed by a survey of my garden—and deciding what to plant outdoors to feed my family and friends throughout the rest of the year.

Spring Into A Season Of Exciting Events
Spring is a season of renewal, and it’s an exciting time for Living Luxe as we embrace fresh opportunities and embark on new beginnings. I’m delighted to share some thrilling updates!
First, we’re counting down to the highly anticipated Living Luxe Design Show, presented by JennAir, happening April 24 to 27, 2025, at the Toronto Congress Centre’s North Building. This event will showcase exceptional talent, innovation and artistry, with a dazzling lineup of exhibitors and sponsors. Behind the scenes, our team is working tirelessly to create an unforgettable experience.
Philanthropy remains at the heart of Living Luxe, and I’m proud to announce this year’s City Couture Gala: Fleurs de Rouge, co-chaired by the amazing Marialisa DeGasperis and myself. Taking place on Friday, April 25, this elegant red-themed evening will support SickKids and the hospital’s remarkable work. A heartfelt thank you to our impressive all-women committee for their role in bringing this event to life.
The excitement continues with the Living Luxe Awards Gala on Saturday, April 26. Now in its second year, this event celebrates Canada’s extraordinary talent and boasts an esteemed panel of judges that includes Lori Morris, Nadia Di Donato, George Sully, Martha Franco and Gianpiero Pugliese. Their expertise ensures this year’s awards will be truly exceptional.
On a personal note, this winter has been a mix of family adventures and inspiring professional journeys, from a refreshing trip to Florida with my kids to media trips that fuel my creativity and growth.
This year has also marked Living Luxe’s continued evolution. We’ve welcomed new partnerships and strengthened existing ones—like our collaboration with the Toronto Boat Show in January, where we proudly hosted a booth that I hope you had a chance to visit! These partnerships reflect our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences and connecting with the community.
We wish you a joyful spring season ahead and look forward to welcoming you to the Living Luxe Design Show.

Learning Curves And Trailblazing Designers
Dear Reader,
When you’re in the magazine industry, each issue you work on feels like your baby. Six times a year, my team and I watch as a simple idea grows into a story, comes to life in the layout, and is woven into a beautiful bouquet of pages. Then, finally—excitement blending with just a bit of trepidation—we send it off into the world to find you wherever you are reading this. Inevitably, the process yields regrets, successes and new lessons each time.
I could never pick a favourite issue because—as with children—each is unique and special in its own way. But I will say that this one is full of especially wonderful stories. Harvey Wise of Wise Nadel Design revisits one of his first clients to create the custom-built house of their dreams, while celebrated designer Lori Morris walks us through incorporating the colours of spring—pink and green—into your home with her usual panache. Newmarket-based firm ADM Design unveils its new model home, a stunning space that showcases the latest design innovations and trends. We also explore the inventive and stylish new Toronto restaurant aKin, which offers the first Asian fusion tasting menu of its kind in the city. These are just a few of the many stories that await you within the pages of this issue.
Our cover star is a remarkable designer I have long admired. I first had the pleasure of hearing Alessandro Munge talk at a trade show several years ago and was struck by the passion and eloquence with which he spoke about design. It was clear to me that he is someone who is not only interested in creating amazing spaces but in furthering the very language of design not only in Canada but around the world. I have eagerly followed his eponymous Toronto firm ever since.
Still, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when we sat down together to chat for this story—what would this larger-than-life luminary be like in an unscripted and casual one-on-one? As it turns out, even more charming, articulate and inspiring than I could have anticipated. For the story, Munge spoke about how travel influences his designs, Studio Munge’s new Miami office and its expansion to the Caribbean and Middle East, and an exciting new condo project—138 Yorkville—that is poised to elevate Toronto’s standard of luxury.
As we ready this issue to share with you, I felt enlivened by all the extraordinary trailblazers who are leading the industry. I hope that as you read more about Munge and his studio—and the other creatives in this issue—you’re as excited as he and I are about the future of design in Canada and beyond.
Thank you for being part of it.

WATERFRONT OASIS
In the master-planned community of Bayside Toronto, the new condo project Aqualuna offers the best of lakeside luxury living.
By Charlotte Bushnell-Boates
In the heart of Toronto’s revitalized East Bayfront waterfront neighbourhood, the new Aqualuna condominium project will begin occupancy this spring. The fourth and final residential tower in the Bayside Toronto community, the architecturally spectacular property sits on the eastern edge of the city’s waterfront. In keeping with the location, Aqualuna was cleverly designed to maximize outdoor space, while still offering exceptional amenities.
Master developed by global real estate investment manager Hines,
the community spans 13 acres on the edge of picturesque Lake Ontario and will hold more than two million square feet of residential, office, retail and public spaces once completed. With the partnership of real estate developer Tridel, all of Bayside’s condominium towers are designed with extensive green space. From morning walks along the Water’s Edge Promenade and in Aitken Place Park to dining in the many waterfront restaurants and cafes, activities at Bayside are in a luxurious natural setting that is just minutes from downtown Toronto.
“Aqualuna is an opportunity for people to get into something brand new,” says Samson Fung, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Tridel. “Toronto’s waterfront has been wanting new development for a long time, and we’re one of the first communities established. It’s very close to the core of the city, but far enough away to feel away from the business of downtown.”
The newest condominium project in the community, Aqualuna’s striking, modern architecture was designed by Copenhagen’s 3XN Architects to maximize waterfront views for all the residences.
Prioritizing green initiatives, Aqualuna at Bayside will pursue LEED Platinum Certification, the highest ranking earned for a building’s environmental efficiency in reducing carbon, energy and water waste, among other markers.
The premium two- and three-bedroom units at Aqualuna range from 1,600 to 2,404 square feet, offering ample space for both indoor and outdoor living. “It’s something that we really take a lot of pride in,” Fung says. “Large outdoor space is rare in downtown Toronto, and we wanted to design the building around spacious terraces to give people the outdoor space they craved.” Each unit features a large terrace or balcony—some even have both—ranging from 140 to 740 square feet so that each resident can fully enjoy the beauty of the lakeside location.
Luxury, lifestyle-focused design extends into the interiors of the units at Aqualuna. Designed by Tridel’s in-house award-winning team, the interiors feature exceptional finishings and high-quality materials inspired by the waterfront environment. “I like to call it a kind of quiet luxury,” Fung says. “Walking in, there’s a very modern and contemporary feeling, but immediately you notice the incredibly rich materials. So it does exude this sense of tranquility, but also with a very high-quality, luxury feel.”
Within Aqualuna, residents can indulge in luxury amenities and common areas designed for easeful, better living by Toronto-based firm II BY IV DESIGN. From wellness-focused facilities such as a fully-equipped fitness studio, yoga studio and sauna, to entertainment and social offerings ranging from a bar to a billiards lounge to private dining, Aqualuna’s amenities are perfectly set up for residents to enjoy a holistic and comfortable lifestyle. Plus, a generously sized outdoor pool in the centre of Aqualuna overlooks Lake Ontario—a spectacular place for a dip.
“It truly could be an urban cottage for a lot of people,” Fung says. “It’s really unique. You’re part of an incredible master-planned community right next to the water, but just a 15-minute walk and you’re right in the middle of the city.”

NEVER TOO LATE
A nose job is not just for the Gen Z and millennial generations. In fact, there can be many benefits to opting for rhinoplasty later in life.
By Dr. Philip Solomon & Nancie Heiber
Whether it’s boosting a teenager’s confidence, refining the aesthetic of a young professional or addressing age-related changes later in life, rhinoplasty offers something different at each stage of life. The nose is the centre of the face, and when done well, rhinoplasty blends medicine and art to create something that harmoniously fits the patient. But timing can also have a big impact. So, what’s the perfect time to get a nose job? Can it still be worth it to opt for rhinoplasty in mid-life? Dr. Philip Solomon MD, FRCSC, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgeon, practising Facial Plastic Surgery in Toronto, answers our questions about the benefits of rhinoplasty surgery later in life.
Dr. Philip Solomon MD, FRCSC
“ UNDERGOING RHINOPLASTY OVER THE AGE OF 40 MAY BE A DREAM COME TRUE FOR PEOPLE
WHO HAVE LONG BEEN SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT THEIR NOSES.”
Living Luxe (LL): What is the best age to have rhinoplasty surgery?
Dr. Philip Solomon (PS): While there is no such thing as the “best” age to have a nose job, the general rule is that if you are in good health, you are likely a candidate for rhinoplasty. Still, there are some factors to consider that can impact your candidacy, including anatomy, skin thickness, previous rhinoplasty, age and the desired goal.
What’s great about rhinoplasty is that it can be carried out on patients as young as 15 and those well into their 70s. Patients choosing to undergo rhinoplasty in mid-life—in their 40s to 60s—have often been bothered by the appearance of their nose for most of their life and now have the financial resources and the time to do the procedure. This demographic may also want to enter mid-life looking more youthful and refreshed. There is a maturity among this age group that allows them to embrace the surgical journey and the healing process.
LL: What are the advantages of doing it later in life?
PS: Undergoing rhinoplasty over the age of 40 may be a dream come true for people who have long been self-conscious about their noses. They may now feel well-established in their careers and want to take care of themselves as they enter the next chapter of life. The cost of a nose job may be more attainable at this age, and cosmetic surgery is more accepted and mainstream nowadays. The nose can also change with aging, sometimes drooping and appearing longer as one gets into mid-life.
LL: What are the benefits of doing rhinoplasty in each decade of life?
PS: Each decade has its benefits when considering rhinoplasty surgery, and it’s a very personal decision as to when the time is right. The teenage years are often appealing because younger patients have the rest of their lives to enjoy the result; it can also give a boost of self-confidence to a teenager who may be struggling with their nasal appearance. Patients in their 20s may be more confident and emotionally equipped to endure the surgical process, and they may want to enter the workforce with a new aesthetic appearance. The 30s are a time when people may have their careers in place and can afford a nose job or they have started a family and are off work and have the time for surgery. The 40s are the beginning of mid-life, when people start noticing signs of aging and have more disposable income.
They may want to enjoy looking their best. Those 55 and older may see changes to their nasal shape due to aging and may also want to combine other anti-aging facial procedures while under anesthesia for rhinoplasty.
LL: Are there differences in the rhinoplasty procedure with men versus women as we age?
Men tend to have thicker skin that can become more bulbous with age and start to droop. Breathing issues and snoring can develop as they get older and can be addressed with septorhinoplasty. Women on the other hand may be more open to cosmetic and self-improvement procedures. We often see women in their 50s requesting rhinoplasty surgery when they come in to discuss facelift surgery.
Rhinoplasty is an interesting procedure because the range of people who are candidates for the surgery is so broad, extending to all genders and generations. This is what makes it one of my most popular and rewarding procedures as it combines medicine with artistry, and each face is a unique canvas.
Dr. Philip Solomon MD, FRCSC
A DREAMY DESTINATION
Mexico’s Los Cabos has long been a go-to getaway for tastemakers and Hollywood elite. Here are three reasons this peninsula paradise has stood the test of time.
By Valerie Simmons
The mention of Los Cabos conjures up images of celebrities, luxury hotels and moonlit dinners. Ever since silver screen legends such as John Wayne and Charlie Chaplin put Los Cabos on the map, this sunsoaked resort town on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula has maintained its appeal, and it remains a destination of choice for modern Hollywood A-listers. But the draw of Los Cabos goes beyond its picturesque setting along the temperate Sea of Cortez. So what, exactly, is all the fuss about?
On a recent trip, we gained some insight. Our conclusion? Los Cabos is one of the few vacation destinations to offer so much to so many without sacrificing the charms that made it famous in the first
place. Here are just a few of the elements that account for the lasting appeal of Los Cabos.
One: Whether you’re looking for all-night parties or a tranquil retreat, you can find it on the strip.
Feel like dancing on the tables and having a margarita or three? The bustling strip, made famous by Jimmy Buffett and Sammy Hagar, is the perfect place. Bars play live music late into the night, and raucous parties are a nightly occurrence. But that is just part of the story. Our hotel, the Corazón Cabo by Noble House, is located in the center of the action and yet felt blissfully secluded when we retreated to its famous rooftop bar, The Rooftop 360, known for some of the best views in Los Cabos. At the on-site spa, we tried the couple’s massage, which was a remarkably good value in a serene setting. After our treatment, we padded back to our large room in slippers and robes to enjoy the legendary Cabo sunset from our balcony.
Two: There are amazing fine dining options.
Los Cabo boasts incredible dining options, including 13 Michelin-featured restaurants. We decided to visit Cocina de Autor, a Michelin-starred restaurant located in the stunning Gran
Velas, a five-star all-inclusive property. The white tablecloth dining experience offers eight-course to 10-course tasting menus, complete with wine pairings. Chef Sidney Schutte is famous for taking guests on a culinary journey using local ingredients and re-imagining Los Cabos cuisine. Not only was our dinner on par with anything we have had in the world’s finest dining rooms, but the atmosphere was beyond romantic. Three: There is plenty of ecotourism, sustainability...and puppies.
Owned by Canadians, Acre Resort is proof that luxury and sustainability can co-exist in harmony. Beyond the treehouse stays and elegantly designed suites and villas, the highlight of the visit to Acre for us was a trip to their animal rescue facility where they shelter dogs, horses, donkeys and more. The hotel takes care of all the paperwork and shipping costs for guests who accidentally fall in love with a dog or puppy, and they have great success finding homes for their rescues.
Our short visit means we only scratched the surface of what there is to do in Los Cabos—golf, diving, adventure sports and more beckon us back for a second visit. We did, however, come away understanding the lasting allure of this peninsula town that feels a world away.
URBAN LUXURY
With premium finishes, convenience and access to boutique hotel amenities, Exchange Signature Tower (EXS) is a standout in the celebrated Exchange District.
By Samantha Vecchiarelli
Adjacent to Square One Shopping Centre’s high-end wing, EXS is downtown Mississauga’s coveted new luxury rental collection. As part of the award-winning Exchange District Community— comprising four distinguished towers—EXS stands at 31 storeys, featuring a curated, refined aesthetic. “Not only does [EXS] house purpose-built rental units, but it’s also going to have a boutique hotel in it,” says Christopher Castellano, vice president of sales and marketing for the developer, Camrost Felcorp. “It’s going to be a very vibrant community.”
The Exchange District, consisting of EX1, EX2, EX3, and EXS, has long been one of Camrost’s flagship projects. EX1, EX2, and EX3 have launched, sold out and are under construction, with leasing already underway at EXS. The vision behind the development, which has been in the making for nearly a decade, was to bring an “internationally inspired master-planned community to downtown Mississauga,” explains Castellano. This urban oasis draws inspiration from city centres across the globe, merging convenience with a lively social fabric.
The development’s appeal is amplified by nearby retail shops and restaurants, as well as its proximity to Ontario’s largest shopping centre, Mississauga City Hall, Living Arts Centre, Celebration Square and Sheridan College. At the heart of the community, a pedestrian piazza anchors the towers, offering a communal area that fosters connection. BDP Architects was entrusted with the creation of the pedestrian route and all retail spaces, ensuring cohesive flow and interaction across spaces.
Masterfully designed by Arcadis Architects, the residential towers exude sophistication, while all of the interiors are the work of MAED. Collective, whose expertise in space planning, luxury materials and the seamless flow of environments elevates the living experience.
EXS comprises 26 boutique hotel rooms and 250 residential units, ranging in size from 550 square feet to more than 1,200 square feet. Each residence exemplifies urban luxury, boasting premium finishes such as Kohler plumbing fixtures, Miele kitchen appliances, Latch smart-access systems, and exquisite imported Italian cabinetry by Trevisana Kitchens.
Sustainability is also central to EXS’s bespoke design, and Castellano says the company kept the building as green as possible. “It’s a geothermal building that utilizes a VRF/ERV system for a more sustainable, energyefficient and cost-efficient way of heating and cooling.”
Culinary enthusiasts will be especially delighted to discover that the base of the building houses the new Japanese Fish Market in addition to the acclaimed restaurant Byblos and a premium grocery retailer. Excellent access to public transit, including the upcoming Hurontario LRT, makes this location particularly attractive to residents who value connectivity.
EXS residents enjoy access to the Exchange Club, which is a lavish 30,000 square feet of amenity space that includes an indoor pool, a fully equipped fitness facility, a yoga room, party and games rooms, a half-court basketball court, and an outdoor terrace. As a unique perk of sharing space with a boutique hotel, residents can opt into professionally managed concierge services, including housekeeping, room service and valet. EXS offers a rare opportunity to experience the pinnacle of urban opulence, blending elevated living, exceptional amenities and amazing convenience.
A SAFE START
Shelter Movers provides a simple solution to a complex problem: free volunteer-driven moving services to abuse survivors entering a new chapter in life.
By Marc Hull-Jacquin
Imagine being trapped in an abusive relationship, unsure of how to escape, overwhelmed by the risks of both leaving and staying, and knowing that your next stop, whether a friend’s couch or a bed in a shelter, means losing your belongings. This is the harsh reality faced by many survivors of intimate partner violence.
In 2016 while on parental leave with my daughter, I decided I wanted to change this reality. Thinking about the safety I was able to provide my children—the roof over their heads, a warm bed at night, and all their favourite things, from finger paintings to macaroni necklaces—I knew that everyone deserves a safe home. From this, Shelter Movers was born: a volunteer-powered charity providing moving and storage services at no cost to abuse survivors, primarily women and children, fleeing violence.
For one survivor from an upscale Toronto neighbourhood, leaving felt impossible: “I looked around my beautiful home, and it was hard to understand how I ended up in this situation,” she told me. “How could I be living with so much ugliness behind closed doors? I couldn’t stand the idea of being labelled a victim. I am strong. I am capable. I am not a victim. But eventually, I knew staying was more dangerous than leaving.”
Shelter Movers offers a simple solution to this complex problem, helping survivors transform an impossible situation into a new beginning. “I was scared and unsure, but when the Shelter Movers team arrived, everything changed,” the survivor shared. “They restored my dignity and provided a sense of security. For the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful.” Coordinating the moves involves careful planning, a detailed itinerary and a team that can include volunteer movers and drivers, police and private security, language interpreters, pet fostering agencies and other services, depending on the survivor’s needs.
Shelter Movers started in Toronto but now operates in 10 cities across Canada, completing around 150 moves every month. It’s the only service of its kind in the country. It is astounding to me that a woman or girl is killed every two days in Canada at the hands of an intimate partner or family member. Shelter Movers is about more than moving belongings; it’s about reminding survivors they matter. Each move sends a powerful message that survivors are not alone and deserve a community that stands with them on their journey.
This vital work is only possible because of the unwavering support of donors, volunteers and community partners. BOLD MOVES
Removing walls was only the beginning for M&M Interior Design of Toronto in its mission to add distinctive contemporary flair to an architecturally sophisticated modern home.
By Susan Kelly
Built in 2005, this stunning modern home in the upscale Lawrence Park area of Toronto stands as a shining example of exceptional early-millennium modern architecture. But for many years, the exterior’s extraordinary and edgy lines were downplayed, says the designer charged with adding impact.
“The facade had been painted white,” explains Maryam Alavinasab, co-owner of M&M Interior Design of Toronto. “So it was difficult to see the distinctive angles. We emphasized the modern lines by adding black accents. The change was so
striking that neighbours who had walked by it for years suddenly stopped to take a second look.”
It was an audacious move, but this former structural engineer is no stranger to dramatic transformation; she moved to Toronto from Iran just before the pandemic. With the world in lockdown, no openings in her field and two children to support, Alavinasab made a quick pivot.
She began by doing luxury home staging for local real estate agents. Dazzled by the deft way Alavinasab brought out a home’s best qualities, clients soon clamoured for more services. She joined with another engineer with design skills, Mahsa Barandeh, to found M&M Interior Design. Alongside a team of professionals that includes engineer Alireza Mahmodian, they handle not only luxury staging but bespoke interior design and refined renovations to transform both new builds and existing homes.

The new owners of this home commissioned a sophisticated update to the interior as well. The empty nesters wanted a contemporary look that would respect the home’s original and striking modern architecture. And being in the high-rise construction industry, they

had seen enough generic modern design; they wanted something unique but classic enough to age gracefully.
The house encompasses an impressive 5,000 square feet, yet the original space felt cramped because of closed-off rooms on the main floor. “Transforming from closed to open concept is something of a specialty for us,” Alavinasab says. “With our engineering backgrounds, our clients can rest easy knowing that a fresh aesthetic comes with structural integrity.” By removing several walls, a magnificently spacious floor plan was created, while raising the ceilings allowed for a soaring 28-foot height in the foyer.
The new configuration encourages fluid flow between the kitchen, family room and dining area, which is made intimate by a seethrough wine rack partition. A clean, minimalist kitchen featuring white flat-front cabinetry and white with grey-veined countertops and backsplash abuts a hidden kitchen used for day-to-day meal
preparation, ingeniously keeping clutter out of sight while the main area remains pristine for entertaining.
To accommodate the homeowners’ adult children, M&M Interiors restructured the second floor to transform an existing balcony into a fourth bedroom and give each its own ensuite bathroom.
The M&M team handled every detail of the elegant and extensive renovation, down to the smallest touches, such as judiciously placed house plants. Not finding the perfect coffee table for the family room, the designer devised a chic walnut and marble version herself. M&M’s furniture collection is a new venture for the company, launched in response to client demand.
And in the end, “The homeowners were thrilled with their new home and a joy to work with,” Alavinasab says. “It’s especially gratifying for me knowing that we perfectly incorporated their very sophisticated tastes.”
FUTURE FORWARD
From locking your doors to making a morning cappuccino, the sleek and stylish Moorgen Smart Panel adds ease to our lives.
By Susan Semenak
Imagine leaving home and pressing a single button to turn off lights, draw the curtains and arm the security system. Or picture returning after a long day with an armload full of groceries and unlocking the front door with just the wave of your palm, then turning a dial to adjust the air conditioning, put on some mood music and get the oven going for supper.
That’s what the Moorgen Smart Panel does. The German company, working with designers around the world, has been at the forefront of smart technologies for more than a decade and has won numerous awards for its sleek design and “humanized” ease of use. Marco Mir, CEO of Toronto-based Prime Smart Solutions Inc., is the exclusive distributor of Moorgen products in Canada. When he shows visitors around his showroom, his excitement
is palpable and it isn’t long before even the most technologically skittish among them are enthralled too.
“What this thing can do in your house is incredible,” he says as he walks through the showroom. “You can program just about everything and it will learn to recognize your preferences, day and night, using artificial intelligence capabilities. It will do what you want and need it to do time and time again.” Adorning the showroom walls are sleek Moorgen panels in stone, burnished wood and even black Swarovski crystals; the company even creates custom panels to match the surfaces of its clients’ walls.
Smart technologies are rapidly entering our day-to-day, making our lives easier, more efficient and more cost-conscious. The Moorgen Smart Panel, along with its sister collection of portable

smart knobs and wireless remote controls, takes smart home technologies to new levels with cutting-edge design and simple, comfortable user interface.
“What Moorgen does is allow users to create their own ambience throughout the house,” Mir says. “We have created the highest level of customization.”
In sleep mode, for example, the Moorgen dims the lights gradually, draws the curtains and lowers the room temperature. When you get up in the night to go to the bathroom, a motion sensor in the hallway ceiling will detect you approaching and turn on the lights to guide your way. When you return to bed it will turn them off. In the morning, the Moorgen Smart Panel will know when you are likely to get up and how quickly you’ll want your cappuccino. “You’ll never have to touch a button,” Mir says.
“It is connected to all your smart appliances and devices, and it will come to understand your habits.”
He points to the environmental benefits and the cost savings of a smart system that dims the lights and adjusts the ambient temperature according to the time of day and the season, as well as the homeowners’ personal preferences.
But the advanced technology isn’t the only thing that Mir’s clients are drawn to. The Moorgen Smart Panel has also won prestigious international design awards for its high-end aesthetics. The panels come in myriad styles, some of them designed by international luminaries, among them Zaha Hadid, the late Iraqi-English architect and designer known as “queen of the curve” for her visionary designs. “The Moorgen Smart Panel isn’t just incredible technology,” Mir says. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY
From drapes to blinds to sun shades, experience the finest window coverings at Shadings’ elegantly appointed North York showroom.
By Julie Gedeon
When it comes to window treatments, Shadings covers it all. The Canadian enterprise specializes in customizing drapes, curtains, blinds and shades using the leading brands to add an ample dose of luxury to any home or office setting.
Marc-Olivier Lafleur and Torey Dery launched Shadings in Toronto four years ago to expand their realm from Store Urbain, their flagship Montreal location for more than a decade. “We’ve really wanted to be part of how Toronto is leading interior design in Canada by contributing our expertise and experience,” Dery says. “We offer the best higher-end options with a white-glove service and one-stop convenience.”
Beyond its meticulously crafted design projects, Shadings’ attention to detail is evident as soon as visitors step inside its North York showroom.
“Our displays have the proper lighting and space to give a true sense of how each option looks and feels,” Dery says. “We also have a display case inspired by jewelry stores because some of our accessories are like window gems.”
Luxurious sofas invite shoppers to sit and relax as they discuss the various options to establish privacy, eliminate glare, black out sunlight or soften window frames with a set of elegant sheers. “We have a team of expert seamstresses who specialize in ripple fold and French-pleat curtains and drapes,” Dery says. “And, of course, we handle or help with the installation.”
There again, Shadings offers an array of choices. “We can arrange for you to have a single remote control for a wired blind or other window treatment, or we can set up drapes or curtains to

open and close with an independent battery-powered motor,” Dery says. “And all our products are made to integrate seamlessly with the leading home automation installers.” Shadings carries Hunter Douglas, Lutron and other top window brands. Within the well-appointed showroom, clients can also experience the first Altex Experience Centre, where they are invited to check out the high-end Canadian line for themselves. Shadings often uses Altex to provide the ideal motorized shades for large, open spaces graced by windows that span more than one storey. “Even if privacy isn’t an issue, the shades protect furnishings against sun-related fading,” Dery advises.
Customers often look to balance the distinct lines of popular mid-century, industrial or minimalist styles with the softness of a
well-executed window covering. In one recent project, Shadings recommended curtains to flank the grand arched windows and sliding doors in a suburban Toronto home that lacked backyard privacy and dimension. “The curtains add so much texture,” Dery says.
Shadings’ expertise also extends beyond the windows they adorn. “We install beautiful awnings to protect your patio or pergola from sun or rain so that you can spend more time outside,” Dery says. “We also have retractable motorized screening that provides shade and shields everyone when it’s bug season.”
Each Shadings consultant is up to date with the latest innovations and trends for both indoors and out, thoroughly familiar with longtime favourites and eager to outfit clients’ homes in the highest quality shadings.

THE ART OF HEAT
Though they have been an integral part of Nordic culture for centuries, saunas are enjoying a rise in popularity in North America. Ready to serve the growing demand, SaunaFin brings more than 60 years of sauna expertise to helping its clients find the perfect fit for every space and person.
By Susan Semenak
After a busy day, there is nothing more relaxing to Alan Blundell than slipping into the sauna in his Oakville backyard and disconnecting from the hurly-burly of life. “It’s a chance to break away from the noise of your day-to-day,” says Blundell, co-owner of SaunaFin, a retailer specializing in all things sauna that he runs with Alex Faltas. “You set the cell phone and everything else aside and your time in the sauna—even if it is just 15 to 20 minutes— becomes a sanctuary. When I come out of the sauna, I feel relaxed. It’s like mental detox.”
Beyond mental clarity, studies have shown regular sauna use may be linked to a vast array of health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health and circulation, lower blood pressure and
reduced symptoms of arthritis, psoriasis and flu. While sauna rituals have long been an integral part of everyday life and selfcare in Nordic countries and especially in Finland, which has more saunas per capita than any other country and where using a sauna is as common as taking a shower, its popularity in North America is growing too, bolstered by an increased interest in health and wellness.
It is often a surprise to Blundell’s prospective customers that a sauna can fit into even the tightest of spaces. While SaunaFin has outfitted grand casinos, hotels, spas and gyms across Canada and the United States with luxury saunas, it can also supply sauna kits as small as four feet by four feet for square-footage-squeezed condo dwellers. His customers have managed to fit them into a multitude of carved-out spaces, including former powder rooms and closets. Unsurprisingly, SaunaFin’s motto is “Your sauna, your way.”
Blundell’s own home sauna is a six-foot-by-eight-foot unit in
clear western red cedar, fitted into a nook under the backyard deck, near an outdoor fireplace and facing the swimming pool, but also within 10 steps of the indoors, which is especially appreciated in the winter months. It is equipped with a Tylo combi heater with a water reservoir which “heats up like a kettle” and allows him and his wife Paula to adjust the temperature and humidity level in the sauna to their own preferences. “My wife runs it in standard mode because she likes a dry sauna, like the heat in Phoenix or Las Vegas,” he says. “But I like higher humidity.”
Bringing 60 years of experience to the table, SaunaFin sells sauna kits, prefab saunas and steam baths, as well as heaters, showers and cold-plunge pools. SaunaFin’s saunas come in western red clear cedar, knotty cedar and hemlock and are available as tailored customized sauna kits, but also as pre-fab saunas in various shapes that are suitable for both indoors and outdoors.
For those who want the health benefits of a sauna but can’t

stand high temperatures, the company also sells infrared saunas, which use light to make heat. The infrared version heats up the body directly without warming the surrounding air as much as a traditional sauna heater.
Blundell recommends clients take a couple of months to decide exactly what kind of sauna they want and where it will go. Once their decision is made, SaunaFin can have a custom sauna ready for delivery within a week or two in the Greater Toronto Area with prefabricated saunas typically ready within six to eight weeks.
Inspired by contemporary design, the Motivo Moderno series features subtle texturing while incorporating sleek and refined joints, making it great for public places, patios, pool decks, and areas with a modern intent.
NEW HORIZONS
JennAir brand’s induction downdraft cooktop unlocks new design possibilities with open sightlines and cutting-edge performance.
By Rosie Prata
The kitchen is a delicate balance of form and function, where seamless aesthetics meet precise performance. A truly sophisticated space demands a cooktop that not only delivers on your culinary needs but also integrates beautifully with your space.
Traditional cooktops—whether gas or radiant electric—are typically paired with an overhead range hood, creating a standardized aesthetic. But what if you could reimagine your kitchen, free from the visual weight of overhead ventilation without sacrificing performance? JennAir brand’s induction downdraft cooktop offers just that for a striking fusion of innovation and minimalist appeal that transforms the heart of the home.
This sleek, responsive and efficient appliance has all the sophistication of radiant electric cooking with the powerful performance of gas and is an emblem of progress in the realm of contemporary luxury kitchen design. The finishing touch? It looks fantastic, too.
Designed to be both seen and experienced, this cooktop is crafted in smooth Oblivion Glass and accented by crisp white LED emotive touch controls and can sit flush with countertops,
seamlessly integrating with its surroundings.
One of the most exciting features is downdraft ventilation, which draws vapours downward (instead of upward) to capture steam, grease and odours. This eliminates the need for a traditional range hood, opening up infinite design potential. Downdraft ventilation liberates the space from bulky updraft hoods, clearing the view for windows and inviting open-concept designs, including more shelves and cabinetry, unobstructed backsplashes and statement lighting above the cooktop. The clever downdraft ventilation can even make floating island cooktops a reality.
“It’s truly something you need to see and hear to believe,” says JennAir brand’s Chris Rosario. “By seamlessly integrating technology with design, this new induction downdraft cooktop from JennAir brand reimagines luxury and redefines what’s possible in the kitchen.”
Beyond the design possibilities, performance is paramount. With sensor-driven pan detection, the induction surface heats up faster than gas or electric cooktops, magnetically directing heat for consistent, restaurant-quality results. Imagine precise temperature
“IT’S TRULY SOMETHING YOU NEED TO SEE AND HEAR TO BELIEVE.”
control for boiling water, simmering delicate sauces or melting decadent chocolate. And the downdraft ventilation is quieter than a traditional hood—even the sizzle of a steak sounds louder than this cooktop.
Available in 30-inch and 36-inch configurations, its sleek installation profile requires minimal depth (just 7.78 inches for ducted extraction and 17 inches for recirculation), maximizing valuable cabinet space below.
By challenging convention and pushing the boundaries of the luxury appliance industry, JennAir brand’s induction downdraft cooktop delivers sleek aesthetics, powerful tech and quiet performance for those who revel in the luxury of their culinary adventures and inspiring design possibilities.
THE PERFECT POUR
In unparalleled and sumptuous surroundings, Toronto’s new Bovine Wine Club offers its members exclusive luxury perks and opportunities to learn, mingle and build community.
By Susan Kelly
Toronto’s wine club scene has exploded in recent years, and unique to it is the Bovine Wine Club, Ontario’s only fully licensed private wine club and storage facility, says sommelier James Peden, director of operations at Liberty Entertainment Group (LEG). “There’s simply no club like this in the city,” he says. “We offer a host of VIP privileges and opportunities to our members, from seasoned wine connoisseurs to neophytes. They are joining a very rare wine community.”
Open since January 2025, the wine club is affiliated with—and strategically placed across the hall from—LEG’s celebrity magnet Blue Bovine Steak and Sushi House, which debuted to great acclaim and media buzz last year in historic Union Station. As part of LEG, helmed by CEO and hospitality leader Nick Di Donato, the wine club benefits from its extensive relationships with top wineries and distilleries around the world. The result: entrée into the exclusive community of industry insiders.
Wine collectors can meet wine importers and influencers at invitation-only dinners, tastings or master classes, and other private events in a setting adorned with rich woods and natural stone.
“Say a champagne house just released a highly anticipated wine,” Peden says. “Members could meet its representatives at the club for a special dinner where the wine is paired with dishes specially prepared by Michelin-star chefs from LEG’s Don Alfonso 1890 or DaNico restaurants. I don’t know of another wine club in the world that can offer that.”
For hosting aficionados, Bovine Wine Club members may invite guests to sample wines from their collections in a sumptuous private lounge and bar area that seats up to 75, or they can book a special-event area seating up to 44, accompanied by delicacies from the menu of Blue Bovine restaurant.
Enjoying an exceptional bottle of wine demands an equally exceptional space. Fusing sleek modernism and industrial touches,
the interiors—conceptualized by Liberty Group’s VP and creative director, Nadia Di Donato—are a sumptuous escape from the bustle of the city, meant to balance comfort and elegance with classical crown moulding, ornately treated ceilings and sleek, modern furniture.
Storing wine here also is an elevated experience, says Peden, who also serves as president of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers for Ontario. Wine lockers are available in a limited edition of 600 and offer climate-controlled conditions within a functional and stylish design. Members may ship their wines directly to the club, where they will receive white-glove service from the highly trained team of world-class sommeliers, including Wine Director Julie Garton and Michelin 2024 Sommelier of The Year Ashleigh Forster. The team can help curate wine collections and provide a wealth of knowledge on everything from glassware to pairing suggestions.
Members also enjoy the simple pleasure of meeting and mingling with fellow wine lovers. Peden is gratified by the diversity of the new member roster—a mix of downtown condo dwellers with limited space in their wine cellars and commuters who enjoy stopping for a glass of wine or dinner before heading home or out in the city.
“The Bovine Wine Club provides its members with a place of inspiration and exploration in which to share their love of fine wine and spirits, all in an unmatched setting of comfortable elegance,” he says. “And we look forward to providing even more exciting opportunities for them to do so in the months ahead.”
A GRAND ENTRANCE
Opulence Architecture Systems’ new showroom exhibits a curated international collection of high-performance windows and doors in an inspiring space.
By Susan Kelly
There’s an art to creating a grand entrance. The elegantly majestic Imperial Pivot doors stand a towering 10 feet tall and five feet wide. They glimmer with a subtle aged-gold, slightly textured finish. Contemporary and unique in style, they might be mistaken for an art installation, but these are portals designed for real life.
“The effect is so dramatic, people literally stopped in their tracks when we displayed them at the 2024 Living Luxe Design Show,” says Norm Shubat, principal at Opulence Architecture Systems. “And they are just one example of the exceptionally beautiful and well-constructed doors and windows that we source from around the world.”
Opulence is the exclusive Canadian dealer for exquisitely crafted RK Pivot Doors, like the stately Imperial Pivot. Besides liquid metal, they may be clad in luxurious materials like stone, ceramic, wood or Venetian glass, each becoming a one-of-akind masterpiece. They are part of the wide range of prestigious custom window and door systems the company installs in homes and businesses across North America.
Such an aesthetically advanced collection deserves to be seen in an artful and sophisticated setting. Now open to industry insiders and the public, Opulence Architecture Systems’ 4,000-square-foot showroom is at 126 Tycos Drive in the heart
of Toronto’s Design District. “We designed it to be like an art gallery, with room to take in the full effect under lighting that highlights the beautiful bespoke nature of the products,” Shubat says. All the better to appreciate the finer details and experience their exceptionally high quality.
The window collections include companies like Italy’s venerable and venerated Secco Sistemi. “They are renowned for the minimalist frames called for in fine contemporary architecture and for their exceptional craftsmanship,” says Opulence director Joseph Gerofsky. Today’s homes tend to feature increasingly large windows as well. One recent order called for custom windows that measured eight by 16 feet, made possible by the advanced materials used in Opulence windows, including the finest European triple glazing.
Opulence Architectural Systems products are also available in an exclusive selection of materials not found elsewhere. Look for sleek, modern options in aluminum, aluminum-clad wood or steel from manufacturers that include Reynaers, Cortizo, Schüco and Weather Shield. The company’s high-performance
products may also be framed in brass or Corten steel to harmonize with the trend toward warm metals in home design while adding a stylishly luminous glow.
Opulence’s client list includes elite builders and contractors, along with homeowners who like to be in the know. All are offered personalized customer service at the new showroom, with design consultations with in-house experts available by appointment. “Homeowners typically are most concerned with security and comfort at home when it comes to windows and doors,” Gerofsky says. “Architects primarily focus on technical aspects and thermal efficiency. Builders want to make sure the products come in on time, and that we can handle installation. We have all aspects covered.”
“The greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the many architecturally significant and stunning projects that already feature our products,” Shubat adds. “Our new showroom provides opportunities for people who appreciate elegant and sophisticated design to experience our extraordinary products firsthand in an inspiring space.”
GROUNDED IN STYLE
A fine rug has a special power that elevates the style of any room and is not something to change every season. Toronto’s Weavers Art provides expert advice on which spring trends have staying power.
By Susan Kelly
Spring invariably brings an urge to hit a decor refresh and, with it, an influx of the latest design trends and styling inspirations—the good, the bad and the fleeting. “Rug design is taking exciting new directions,” says Michael Pourvakil, founder and creative director of Weavers Art rug emporium in Toronto. “But not all are right for every home or if you want to create a timeless look.”
Ever innovating, Weavers Art has imported exquisite hand-knotted and award-winning rugs prized by discerning customers in Toronto and beyond for more than three decades. Pourvakil regularly attends world design shows, adding to his already encyclopedic knowledge.
It’s no wonder design industry insiders look to him for the lowdown on haute rug style.
A major rug trend for 2025 is the use of bold, expressive patterns.
“Designers are moving away from minimalistic interiors with simple, plain rugs,” Pourvakil says. “They’re embracing more vibrant colours and intricate geometric patterns.” Think oversized florals or checkerboards, abstract prints or tribal motifs. It takes a deft designer to not overdo it and keep it sophisticated, he says. Weavers Art collections are curated to contain examples that do just that.
And while a striking carpet can make a statement in any room, the
latest application is adding one to staircase runners.
As for neutral colours, this expert sees the interiors continuing to move away from cool grey tones in favour of warmer hues. He’s on board with Pantone’s 2025 colour of the year, Mocha Mousse (PANTONE 17-1230), which influences both high fashion and interior design. “It is such a rich, warm colour on the brown side and somewhat exotic,” he says. “I love it personally, and our in-house designers are using variations of it to enhance the look of our offer.” Calming and grounding, Mocha Mousse is best paired with other earthy hues, especially terracotta, olive, sand or clay, he suggests.
Another big trend this year, custom rugs, is a gratifying one for Pourvakil. His store has long offered this option to homeowners seeking rugs that reflect their personal style and colour preferences while perfectly fitting a room’s dimensions. Weavers Art’s in-house rug designer Wan Ki An can help interpret any vision—either tweaking an existing style or composing an entirely original design. Then it’s over to the production team of master weavers in Nepal who painstakingly handcraft the rug using the finest wool and silk yarns.
Trend-wise, Weavers Art was ahead of the curve when it introduced a selection of freeform rugs last year. They feature irregular shapes that emulate icons of Mid-century Modern design, such as the Noguchi coffee table, and add a touch of softness to otherwise stark modern interiors.
“This is one of the biggest trends now in rugs and also part of the organic design movement that prefers fluid, asymmetrical shapes to linear ones,” Pourvakil says. Square or rectangular rugs with rounded corners are also popular. Weavers Art can either create such a carpet to exact measure or cut an existing one.
In the other exclusive collections on display now, some rugs draw inspiration from modern art, others from traditional Persian designs. “On-trend or not, a rug is an expression,” Pourvakil says. “Your colour and design choices say a lot about you and have great power to transform a space and make it truly feel like home.”
“RUG DESIGN IS TAKING EXCITING NEW DIRECTIONS. BUT NOT ALL ARE RIGHT FOR EVERY HOME OR IF YOU WANT TO CREATE A TIMELESS LOOK.”
A FEAST FOR THE SENSES
The award-winning team behind aKin balances comfort with culinary excellence.
By Eve Thomas
Chef Eric Chong is seated at one of the most coveted spots in aKin: a gleaming green marble slab that serves as both a table for four and a functional chef’s counter where each dish is carefully plated.
“It tends to be the first place booked,” says Chong, also co-owner of lauded Toronto restaurant R&D and the first-ever winner of MasterChef Canada. “It’s totally immersive and interactive. We really encourage asking questions.”
Whether they’re at the chef’s counter by the buzzing open kitchen, the private dining room downstairs or one of the main room’s 28 seats, one can imagine guests having a lot of questions. After all, since it opened last November in Toronto’s St. Lawrence neighbourhood, aKin has offered a wildly inventive 10-course blind tasting menu (the first Asian fusion tasting menu of its kind in the city) served in the span of about three hours. Each dish is a deconstructed and refined take on classics from across Asia, like congee reimagined with dehydrated pork powder or Korean melon milk reborn as a clarified cocktail.
As with R&D, Chong co-owns aKin with another famous chef (and MasterChef Canada judge): multi-Michelin-starred Alvin Leung, aka the “Demon Chef,” the man behind Hong Kong molecular cuisine mecca Bo Innovation. Chong muses, with a laugh, about his longtime mentor: “He’s extremely creative because he rarely has to do it himself! I try to consider the logistics of doing it every day.”
That said, there isn’t a hint of compromise at aKin. Ingredients are the best of the best, whether that’s imported Wagyu beef and sea urchin or Canadian delicacies like B.C. geoduck and peak-season Ontario corn. And delightful details extend beyond the menu. There’s custom plateware from Toronto’s Goji Studio, led by Ken Yau, Portuguese Cutipol flatware and aprons from Vancouver’s Search & Rescue Denim. Commute Design Studio is behind the main signage, walls and floors (no small feat in a two-storey building that was previously an abandoned Indian restaurant in need of new electrics, plumbing and a staircase). Even the presentation of the bill is thoughtful: it arrives on a tiny bonsai.
While each element is picturesque, Chong is careful to note that every detail in the space is in service of the food itself; even the pendant lighting can be rearranged with the tables, so the spotlight is always on the dishes.
And the vibe he wanted to present from the beginning? Comfort. If comfort and fine dining seem contradictory, Chong hopes aKin changes minds. Beyond the green velvet accents and leather banquette seating, there are creature comforts on offer—aKinbranded reading glasses, phone chargers and even blankets. “There’s no reason anyone should feel nervous or anxious,” Chong says of going out for a gourmet meal. And certainly, if anyone finds the gold-flecked decor or a menu-less meal daunting, they’ll be won over through a feast for the senses and leave with a new perspective.
A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
LOUIS XIII cognac is sipped in celebration of its 150th anniversary as its custodians steadfastly look to the century ahead.
By Julie Gedeon
Simply swirling an ounce of LOUIS XIII in a snifter and pausing to admire its amber hue with flashes of gold makes for an unforgettable moment. Just as inhaling its floral and fruity notes before taking a sip—neat or with a drop of water to open its aromas further—is always special but never more so than on this iconic cognac’s milestone birthday.
“This 150th anniversary gives an even greater resonance to the weight of its living legacy, which we must preserve for the future generations while continuing to break the codes of our era,” says Anne-Laure Pressat, the global executive director for LOUIS XIII at Rémy Cointreau. Celebrations of the LOUIS XIII cognac’s anniversary are an elegant affair and have included a stylish birthday bash at Mott 32, one of the world’s most awarded Chinese restaurant brands, at the new Toronto location within the luxurious Shangri-La Hotel.
LOUIS XIII’s enduring legacy is rooted in always thinking a century ahead. The result is a blend of eaux de vie, some of which may surpass the century mark, with notes of peach, melon, nuts and marzipan on the nose and a palate of peaches along with orange blossoms, almonds, cinnamon and woodsy spices. The lingering finish of grapes, oaky spices and fleshy fruit is said to last up to an hour. “We say that one drop of LOUIS XIII is enough to understand its full power, so we developed a pioneering one-
centilitre format that stands as a unique manifestation of LOUIS XIII but also a revolutionary fusion of luxury spirits and fashion accessories,” Pressat says.
This anniversary honours the creator of the LOUIS XIII cognac, the great-grandson of the Rémy Martin who founded the House in the early 1700s, Paul-Émile Rémy Martin. His idea to use a few precious drops of the oldest and finest eaux de vie from his cellar to create a special spirit would bolster his family’s legacy for a century and beyond.
“The 150-year legacy of LOUIS XIII illustrates perfectly our relentless pursuit of excellence,” Rémy Martin CEO JeanPhilippe Hecquet says. “From the vineyards to the decanter, we dedicate ourselves to upholding the highest standards, ensuring this exceptional cognac continues to inspire for the coming centuries.”
Contained within an ornate decanter decorated with fleurs-delys, LOUIS XIII has become a luxurious witness to history, served to royalty and celebrities, sipped by passengers aboard the Orient Express and the Concorde, and toasted in celebration of S.S. Normandie’s inaugural journey. To this day, it marks momentous occasions, from weddings to retirements. “By continuously seeking to improve from past achievements, I aim to preserve this perpetual quest for the rare and the exceptional,” Pressat vows.

LUMINARY
Studio Munge’s holiday party this year looked a little bit different than most companies’ December festivities. Instead of cocktails after work or a stuffy dinner, the Toronto-based design firm’s team boarded a plane for Halifax to experience Muir, a luxurious waterfront hotel infused with local marine charm, designed by the studio a few years ago. “We wanted our team to not only experience something radically different than here locally, but also discover and explore our own hotel,” says the studio’s dynamic leader Alessandro Munge. “They came out, not only with their bellies filled from the dinner, but with inspired hearts.”
While it may seem unorthodox, this team getaway says a lot about how Munge approaches his practice as a whole. He invests in a small but mighty team that prioritizes creativity—a creativity that he is willing to go the extra mile to feed— and views design as an emotive experience that tells a story.
It also speaks to the boundless inspiration he sources from his travels. After all, it was travelling the world and observing firsthand the diversity of cultures that laid the foundations for one of Studio Munge’s key pillars of success: that each project must be unique. “I really fell in love with the concept of the human spirit,” Munge says. “You fall in love with the idea of being so global rather than local, and you start to infuse this in your work. And I think that's probably what informed me to realize that no two projects should be alike in our portfolio.”
at the Living Luxe Design Show this April.
Recently Studio Munge has been applying its expertise on a more global scale, taking on more projects in the Caribbean and Middle East and opening an office in Miami last year. “But it wasn't to make our studio bigger,” Munge says. “It was actually just to continue to refine the studio. We weren't interested in quantity. We were more interested in quality.”
The latter bit is a point Munge emphasizes repeatedly. For him, it’s about the fun of creating spaces that push beyond the bounds of what has already been done in the world of design—take on too many projects and that simply can’t be done. “We have a philosophy in our company, which states that if Alessandro can't touch the project, we don't take on the project,” he says. Because of that, they are highly selective about what they choose to work on, saying yes only to clients who align with the objectives of the studio and are interested in collaborating on something exceptional.
You fall in love with the idea of being so global rather than local, and you start to infuse this in your work.
Since its founding in 1997, Studio Munge has reached nearly dizzying heights, designing for some of the world’s most notable hotel and restaurant groups, with projects including Nobu Toronto, the Ritz-Carlton Residences South Beach Miami, several Pendry hotels, and Wolfgang Puck and Alain Ducasse restaurants. The studio has racked up a slew of awards along the way for innovative and opulent designs, and Munge will speak
They found one such client close to home with Toronto’s 138 Yorkville project, a daring and design-forward residential tower at the corner of Avenue Road and Yorkville Avenue.
Once complete, the property will bring a new level of luxury to Toronto’s downtown core and offer a more centrally located alternative to such neighbourhoods as Forest Hill, Rosedale and the Bridle Path.
Here, beneath soaring ceilings and the soft glow of recessed lighting, the project’s grand lobby is a contemporary haven from the bustle of Yorkville, with Vaniglia Bianco marble-clad walls and floors, a sculptural cliff-stacked onyx concierge desk and striking bronze slats that reach high overhead. The elegant and opulent welcome extends throughout the buildings’ 31 storeys, with every corner carefully considered and imagined as a work of art.
From a third-floor lounge with a cocktail bar to a lush
outdoor terrace complete with a reflecting pond, the amenities far exceed expectations. Adorned with curving limestone, the pool area, with its integrated waterfall and large linear fireplace, would be at home in a five-star hotel. A bright and modern fitness centre with an outdoor yoga terrace overlooks the Yorkville-Avenue Road neighbourhood, while parquet flooring, integrated wine cabinets and marble accents make the private dining room a stately and memorable locale for residents to host a dinner.
For the residences themselves, Studio Munge designed three options, each more stunning than the last, based on three fictitious characters they imagined living there. The contemporary option, informed by an art curator’s aesthetic, is all serene sophistication, with neutral tones, light oak cabinetry and clean sweeping lines, while the traditional one takes its cues from bold European design with textured leather and lacquered wood-panelled walls, herringbone floors and a bookmatched marble fireplace. The transitional offering falls somewhere in between, blending modern spirit with traditional elements.
As the studio nears its third decade, Munge’s interests go beyond picking a wall colour or a piece of furniture. Munge is most drawn to projects that have the ability to change the very fabric of a community. He describes 138 Yorkville as one of those projects. “We understand there's a certain clientele that are going to be able to afford it. I get all that, but I'm talking about making a change to our city positively,” he explains. “And that's just one project I, with all my heart, believe is going to do that. It's very, very rare that a developer has the vision and bravery to put up a project like that.”
Another is the Muir hotel, which Munge says has elevated the standard of design for all of downtown Halifax and has increased room rates across the board. “We fundamentally changed, through design, the entire little city of Halifax. And I think that's very powerful. You won't understand that when we take a picture of Muir,” Munge says. “You’ll never be able to hear that story, but when you start to talk to your clients and you see how it impacted a city, to me, that is way more satisfying than just a trophy.”
That's a striking project—there is simply nothing like it.
The 138 Yorkville Presentation Gallery on Yorkville Avenue offers a taste of what can be expected from the completed tower. Designed to mimic the flow and feel of the residences, the gallery is adorned with many of the same materials, including Vaniglia Bianco marble, onyx, bronze and opaline glass fin chandeliers. Contemporary furnishings from brands including Holly Hunt Design, StudioTwentySeven and Artifort form homey vignettes that welcome visitors to imagine themselves living within the design genius of Studio Munge. It’s bite-sized foreshadowing of all that’s to come at the completed 138 Yorkville, a trailblazing project that Munge is particularly excited about.
“We were able to take this massive amount of experience that we have and bottle it up into this little project, which is 138 Yorkville. I'm so happy to see that architectural openmindedness—that the client was taking design risks,” Munge says. “That's a striking project—there is simply nothing like it. I haven't seen a project like that in all of Canada and beyond.”
And while some creatives who have reached their stride may be wary of straying too far from the path, Studio Munge exists in a constant state of evolution. Beyond numerous recently completed projects, among them, Mijo, a delightfully subdued Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas, inspired by the agave plant, and EDITION Residences Miami, a bright and modern condo tower overlooking Biscayne Bay, Munge and his team are poised to announce several monumental collections and exclusive collaborations later this year with the likes of the Aman Group.
Guided by Munge’s infectious curiosity and passion, which he practically thrums with, the team’s eagerness to explore, redefine and refine, backed by the ability to follow through with exceptional quality, is exactly what has driven Studio Munge to reach such stratospheric heights. And they’re not coming down any time soon. “I actually feel like we're just getting started in our business,” Munge says. “I don't think we've scratched the surface at all.”
Spring ETERNAL ELEGANT
Internationally acclaimed designer Lori Morris, the queen of quintessential opulence, shares the secrets of creating haute luxe interiors in a fresh springtime palette.

Photography by Brandon Barré
In spring, nature bursts forth with a celebration of colour, the first tender green shoots followed by lovely pink blooms. It’s a hopeful and enlivening colour combo that has inspired artists for centuries. Among them is one of the world’s most soughtafter designers of luxuriously glam homes, vivacious Toronto-based powerhouse Lori Morris. And in her hands, it can be elevated with sublime effect in any home’s interior at any time of the year.
“My past projects shown here illustrate the timeless appeal of this highly versatile colour palette and that pink and green can evoke a range of moods, from calm and perhaps romantic to lively and eclectic,” says the audacious artist extraordinaire. “And I always add some sexy panache, without which I feel no room is complete.”
An inimitable flair for taking any decor from mundane to magnificent has elevated Morris to one of the world’s most acclaimed high-end luxury designers.
when used in the home. Green is calming but also motivating, linked with growth and vitality. Pink, on the other hand, is all about feel-good vibes, love and harmony. Science confirms what Morris, lauded for her bold, artful colour choices, has always known: that colour is about feeling.
Take pink. Conventional design wisdom advises using it sparingly, preferably as an accent colour. Yet Morris, with typical no-rules flair, has designed dozens of refined and elegant interiors in which pink predominates. Using paler variations such as pastel or blush—romantic, Versailles-worthy French pinks, she calls them—she has boldly covered walls, floors, even ceilings, with the colour to stunning results. “It takes a skilled eye, using the right tones and intensity, mixed with warm neutrals,” she says. “The overall effect is actually extremely inviting and sublimely soft. You don't know why the room is hugging you; it just is.”
Pink and green can evoke a range of moods, from calm and perhaps romantic to lively and eclectic.
The blonde dynamo and her House of Lori Morris Design (LMD) have garnered hundreds of awards for interior design excellence over the past 38 years. Among them, she is the winner of the Living Luxe Award and in 2025 sits on the judging panel alongside other Canadian design luminaries.
Colour psychology holds that pink and green are both powerful hues, hinting that they can evoke strong responses
Green is a staple colour for this visionary and fearless designer, who strongly believes that it should appear in every home’s decor. It’s an organic touch, all about bringing nature inside and connecting with the world. She feels it injects another layer of strength and personality into a space. Intense emerald, hunter, grass, chartreuse—Morris can make anyone’s favourite shade work. Again, it’s important to balance with neutral colours, and she includes rich gold in the

category for its ability to add a gleaming accent while harmonizing with other colours.
For people living in tropical climates, pink also echoes the natural world outside. Think rosy sunsets or hibiscus, perhaps a flamingo or two. In the dining room of one South Florida estate, shades of vibrant green serve as a backdrop for the tropical print on a puckish, era-bending egg chair with Baroque detailing. Taking cues from the spectacular sunsets, Morris applied shades of soft pink to walls and an area rug, then added more intense hues in accessories like curvaceous vases and two ludic pelican statues.
For another project, she drew inspiration from the mansion’s Miami setting, an area renowned for Art Deco architecture and avant garde design. The vignette shown here reflects her artistic take on the surroundings: a console’s rounded shape evokes the period, while its bubblegum-pink colour adds Pop Art
panache. The effect is heightened when played against acid chartreuse walls and the addition of eccentrically refined details for an overall mood of high-energy, playful sophistication.
“I’ve designed other homes in which I mixed both soft and intense shades of green and pink,” she says. “They engage the senses. Even on a cold winter’s day, it can feel warm and beautiful and remind you of palm trees blowing in the wind.” Which is why this colour scheme can be appropriate whether you reside in a chic downtown condo in Toronto or Paris, a stunning Aspen chalet, a Muskoka lake house or a tropical beachfront retreat.
“The pink-and-green colour palette just needs to be done properly with the right tone intensity keeping in mind the home’s setting,” Morris says. “There also has to be the right mix of beautiful layers and textures around it. With LMD’s design savvy, the effect can be eternally fresh and timelessly elegant with a soupçon of sumptuous sex appeal.”

This modern country estate in Markham boasts a spacious floorplan, luxury amenities and creek-side serenity, all within easy access to the city.

Perfectly secluded yet just at Toronto’s edge, 65 Joseph Street exemplifies timeless luxury. A gem within the historic community of Markham, Ontario, this impeccably built 7,500-square-foot home, currently listed with Cohen Homes & Estates, sits on 1.6 acres of idyllic landscape and combines the best of cottage and city living.
With lush forest views and a peaceful creek—home to great blue herons and small fish—the impressive property cascades down the sloped site. Surrounded by mature spruce and pine trees, the home offers a unique sense of privacy within nature. And from the spacious yard, it can easily be mistaken for a cottage property in Muskoka.
“We built the exterior in a stone architecture that you rarely see these days because it’s so expensive and labour-intensive,” explains the property’s builder, James Reininger, who constructed the house alongside his wife, Annemarie. “As a builder, I chose materials that would have a timeless quality and we really went beyond typical construction, so the quality in the house is just over the top.”
Blending West Coast-style architecture and European design influences, the home features five bedrooms and seven bathrooms across a spacious layout. Throughout, the builder used rich finishes and sumptuous materials, including solid Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring, Venetian-style plaster walls and a dramatic stone fireplace. The floorplan is intended for entertaining—made into an art form with features like a European-inspired wine bar, a billiards room and a hot tub. An expansive 1,550-square-foot wrap-around terrace is perfect for summer meals enjoyed al fresco while a spacious pool offers peaceful forest views.
“The vast windows throughout the home expose the beautiful backdrop of nature at every turn,” Annemarie Reininger says. “And the flow of the house and the optimization of space is so efficient. There’s this incredible attention to detail everywhere you look.”
On the main level, arched entryways and a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained-glass skylight provide ample character and charm. High ceilings on the main and lower levels add even more spaciousness to the already

generously proportioned rooms, while wide windows admit natural light and views of the greenery beyond. A sunken great room makes for intimate lounging, and mahogany-panelled walls and display cabinets showcase exceptional craftsmanship.
The gourmet kitchen—centred around a wide granite island—is ideal for both cooking and gathering. High-end appliances allow for contemporary convenience, while a large custom-built dinette tucked in a bay window alcove provides seating for breakfasts and casual meals. Direct access to the wraparound terrace is perfect for meals enjoyed in the fresh air.
A wood staircase with wrought-iron pickets leads upstairs to spacious bedrooms. A retreat unto itself, the Tuscaninspired primary bedroom presents an effortless feeling of sophistication and ease with a cushioned built-in bench alcove overlooking the forest. An arched hallway leads to a dressing room with custom cabinetry, sleekly concealing generous storage space. The primary ensuite offers luxurious touches, including heated marble floors, his and hers sinks and a spacious tub. Down the hall, additional bedrooms are well-appointed with picture windows, ensuite bathrooms and built-in storage.
The exceptional amenities extend to the home’s lower level, where a gym, billiards room and lounge make for bright recreation, thanks to large sliding doors that lead to the outdoor areas. A separate in-law suite with its own entrance offers comfortable and private guest accommodations.
Throughout 65 Joseph Street, each aspect of the beautifully appointed home has been carefully chosen to maximize relaxation and ease of entertaining within the serene natural surroundings. “It’s a modern country home estate in the city,” explains broker Barry Cohen of Cohen Homes & Estates. “When you’re at the property, you really can feel and appreciate the total tranquility. It’s an incredible place to live—you’re right in the centre of a town and not far from the city, yet you feel like you’re miles away.”

Acclaimed Toronto designer Harvey Wise, of Wise Nadel Design, returns to one of his first clients to create a custom-built dream home that’s perfect for a family’s changing needs.
By Rosie Prata
This project has a lot of meaning to me, personally, and to our firm,” says Harvey Wise, principal along with Robin Nadel at Toronto firm Wise Nadel Design. “We meet some clients for the first time and they become friends or repeat clients, and we’re in each other’s lives for years.” For his clients on Glen Cedar Road, however, the connection was especially meaningful.
“I helped them decorate and furnish their first apartment after they got married,” Wise says, explaining that he first worked with the couple while he was still attending graduate school. “I didn’t even know that at the time this was going
to be my future career path.”
Years later, they moved to the Glen Cedar property in 1999 and asked Wise to work his magic again. “It was an old English Tudor-style house that was probably built in the 1930s,” Wise says of the property’s original character. “They hired me to do their renovation, which I did at the time with Richard Little from Urban Innovations.” The couple was one of Little’s first clients, too. Over the years, Wise returned to Glen Cedar a few times to make updates here and there: some tweaks to the children’s rooms as they grew up, a facelift for the master suite, an upgrade for the kitchen. As the family’s needs

changed, Wise orchestrated delicate design ministrations to ensure their home adapted along with them.
Two decades after the family had moved into Glen Cedar, they flirted with the idea of tearing the house down and doing a custom build, bespoke from the ground up; a design was even drafted but it ended up sitting on the back burner. The clients also looked at other homes but ultimately loved where they were too much to leave.
Then, the pandemic struck, and the couple—now grandparents—decided to tear down the existing house and go for a full new build. They rehired Little, their original contractor, and work began on constructing their dream home, hand in hand with Wise, of course. “It was really quite full circle to be able to build this new house with them,” Wise says.
The original home was stately and traditional with dark wood,
panelling and warm tones of brown, taupe and beige. “For this house, we were able to completely reinvent things,” Wise says. The new design is clean, serene and more contemporary—a total refresh. “When you’ve lived in a house for 25 years that is a 90-year-old home and you get to tear down and rebuild new, it’s like you’re in a candy store,” he says.
The home’s layout has been designed to welcome the couple’s grown-up kids, along with their spouses and children, and to spend quality time together as a family. The large house comfortably accommodates the whole gang, including the couple’s two big fluffy dogs.
The first floor encompasses a dining room, living room, spacious kitchen, breakfast room and family room. The family room is especially cozy, with a huge, U-shaped sectional sofa facing a large television screen installed on
an exquisite, book-matched stone linear fireplace—the ideal space to pile in and watch a football game together. “The rooms all flow very nicely from one to the other,” Wise says. “And the kitchen is really at the heart of the whole house, right in the middle.”
In the kitchen, the palette is light, fresh, bright and crisp. A large marbled centre island is used as a preparation surface, serving station and seating area. Behind it, a servery conceals appliances and makes for an out-of-the-way space for meal prep, entertaining or catering, maximizing beauty and function. “It just really works,” Wise says.
The palette of greys is consistent throughout the home, with Wise using a variety of materials and finishes to expertly create multidimensional texture and warmth. “The hardwood throughout the house is a warm, smoky colour, and we kept the trim a fresh, soft off-white,” he says. “The rooms themselves are different combinations of greys, usually
punctuated with white and charcoal.”
Throughout, the attention to detail is extraordinary, with builtin millwork in the living room, a zebrawood table in the dining room and blown-glass light fixtures that are works of art in themselves. Custom-designed pieces by AM Studio illuminate the dining and kitchen tables, while a fixture by Ridgely Studio Works lights the stairwell. “There are very few pieces that were not done to our custom specifications, right down to the frontdoor grille,” Wise says.
One detail from the old house has remained, installed on the wall of the marble-floored wine cellar on the home’s lower level. It’s a photograph taken by the owners “the day after the old house was demolished” Wise reveals. While a new house stands where the old house once was, it still holds a trove of family memories that will continue to multiply. This small feature is a highly personal memento that integrates seamlessly with the rest of the home’s intimately crafted new life.

Health is wealth,” as the saying goes, and one of the greatest luxuries of all is a space in which to relax, entertain and spend time with family. So it makes perfect sense that a recent project by Toronto design firm Contempo Studio in the prestigious St. Andrew-Windfields area is a sanctuary designed to balance luxury and serenity.
“Toronto is such a busy, high-gear city,” says Contempo founder and owner Marin Zabzuni. “People need a getaway.” Zabzuni and his team set out to bring that feeling of refuge to a sprawling 8,000-square-foot French-chateau-style home on Wimpole Drive, built for—and with—new clients who had admired Contempo’s work across the city.
“We have a strong portfolio, over 10 years in business and a great reputation for delivering the whole package,” says Zabzuni, adding that while Contempo had already worked on a project nearby, this was their biggest home in the neighbourhood so far. “Our clients come to us to build a dream home, and we’re there every step of the way, walking them through the entire process from initial design to final construction,” says Zabzuni. case, the “we” included V&S Design for the interior design and Lawrence Park Development for the build. “These clients have young children and were looking for something that would be both transitional and luxurious,” Zabzuni explains of the overall vision for the property. “It needed to fit into the neighbourhood’s neoclassical aesthetic but still stand out with our unique design sensibility.”
Approaching the house, visitors are first struck by its grand limestone-clad facade, partially hidden behind full gating—a must for privacy and peace of mind (as is the Control4 tech that automates and secures the entire home). Nestled in a landscaped garden accented by water features, the full circular concrete driveway, heated and bordered in natural granite, leads to an expansive three-car garage. Zabzuni notes that the driveway was a client request that involved some expert maneuvering. “The lot is wide, but not deep, so we had to figure out how to maximize livable space, inside and out,” he says, also pointing to the roof, tastefully staggered to break up its width.
The grand entrance already hints at the mix of classical and creative design inside. “It’s not your typical stone, roof and columns,” says Zabzuni. “It’s custom designed and built in limestone.”
Inside, the foyer’s floor is accented with curved borders and brass inlays, overlooked by a second-floor lounge. The back of the house is open, breezy and luxuriously expansive, from the kitchen, with its oversized island and top-of-the-line Miele appliances, to the breakfast nook and living area. Throughout, bespoke European floors, aluminum windows, an abundance of porcelain and marble slabs, and a curved fireplace create a subtly opulent feel. Accessible by elevator, five bedrooms each boast their own bathroom, and the primary has a generous living area and balcony—a sanctuary within a sanctuary.
Downstairs, the full walkout basement is a wellness destination in its own right, featuring a sauna, cold plunge pool, rec room, bar and home gym. It opens onto a backyard that’s equally equipped for entertaining and taking it easy, with a Japanese garden, sprawling deck, full outdoor kitchen and an in-ground pool with a splash pad for the children. “Clients are requesting more pools, and they’re becoming more common, even in Canada,” Zabzuni says. “People may not be able to use them year-round, but they want to make the most of those warmer months.”
Zabzuni emphasizes the lot’s generous—but wide and shallow—dimensions, noting his team added a
supporting wall to extend the outdoor space, ensuring that the yard could accommodate everything their clients desired, including a cabana replete with a steam room. Designed in a neoclassical style, it has proven to be a complementary structure rather than an afterthought. “The result is really charming,” he says.
The finished home is just what the clients asked for, expertly blending practicality, luxury and tranquility. “We were able to deliver on that vision while still keeping the house grounded in classic, timeless design elements,” Zabzuni says.
Beyond the happy new homeowners, there has also been great feedback from neighbours in the St. Andrew-Windfields area. Just as the Wimpole Drive clients found Contempo thanks to the company’s homes across Toronto, this project now serves as a calling card for other people in search of a team that will deliver their dream home. “It was a great experience all around and also a great opportunity to showcase our work in the neighbourhood,” Zabzuni says.
An innovative, new model home showcases ADM Design’s aptitude for creating interiors that expand the bounds of what’s possible in a space.

designing for Tomorrow
Photography by Kenesha Lewis and Larry Arnal
When people walk into Newmarket-based design firm ADM Design’s model home, it has a tendency to take their breath away. With towering sculptural wall features, statement-making lighting fixtures and luxurious finishes, it’s a space that features the latest design innovations and trends. Founder and lead designer Andrea McMullen and her team focused on what’s new and what’s next during the renovation of the gutted threestorey house overlooking Friday Harbour. “This project gave us the opportunity to create our full vision,” McMullen says. “The whole idea is to show clients what’s possible.”
A wide array of opulent textures characterizes the home, starting with Cosentino stone integrated into the soaring 22-foot-tall fireplace surround. “We added three arches to the design we originally featured at our Living Luxe booth a year ago to fully define this space,” McMullen says. With a striking contrast of black and cream, the arches emphasize just how spectacular the space truly is. Overhead, a billowy cluster of pendant light fixtures from Studio M become art installations, gradating upwards from the dining area to mimic birds in flight as they draw a visitor’s eye to the full height of the
fireplace and illuminate the space with a moody glow.
ADM Design wanted to show how the firm could put its spin on the popular fluting trend, so the designers used a new fluted stone on the fireplace base and added a thicker asymmetrical fluting to the entryway cubby and the kitchen cabinetry.
Throughout the home, Mid-century Modern furniture infuses the space with the liveable quality that is at the core of all ADM projects. A curved gold sofa, a two-level coffee table with round wooden legs and a spacious dining area establish a sense of laid-back luxury.
Upstairs, the second floor’s stretch ceiling is as unexpected as it is stunning. AV Style turned the matte black typically used in home theatres into a veritable starry night with bands of twinkling LED lights. “Stretch ceilings make wiring a home with smart technology easier,” McMullen says.
Looking out at the open floor plan living space below, the second floor’s mezzanine is the ideal place to unwind at day’s end. “We call it the ‘sunset lounge’ because of the way the sun colourfully beams through the wide expanse of windows,” McMullen says. Instead of paint, a linen-like wallpaper softly textures the walls, while massive 20-foot sheers from the main to the second floor add finesse without obscuring the natural light.
A concealed door within the sunset lounge opens to the third-
storey penthouse with its own complete living space, including a second kitchen. The pendant lighting within the stairwell is carefully positioned to cast a special glow on the artwork adorning the walls for an intimate gallery experience as visitors ascend to this private hideaway. “I believe that every homeowner should invest in at least one original piece of artwork to start,” McMullen says. “Most of the art is original and includes the fun Gucci football and Gucci toaster depicted by local artist James Mandeville.”
In the penthouse’s ensuite bathroom, a plethora of stone, double shower heads, double water closets and a fluted freestanding tub in front of a floor-to-ceiling window make for a spacious spa-like oasis. Tulipshaped asymmetrical sink basins, a set of amorphously shaped mirrors and French gold hardware infuse a taste of the designer’s personality. “We
turned three bedrooms and three bathrooms into this penthouse suite to have all this wonderful living, storage and bathroom space,” McMullen says. “We feel strongly about designing a home to use all of its space specifically for you to best live in it.”
From an oversized custom-designed peony-wallpapered powder room to a crisscrossing chain light fixture hanging over the tub, ADM’s model home showcases the design team’s eye for going bold and embracing innovation. “We always look at the best elements of past, current and upcoming design to determine what’s ideally functional or aesthetically pleasing so that we can reimagine those aspects into something new and exciting that will stand the test of time,” McMullen says. Builder Justin Miandro of Title Building Group reveals how he uses planning, passion and inclusion to create exceptional multimillion-dollar properties that not only win awards but feel like home.

Slated for completion in fall 2025, a stately stunner in Mississauga is one of the current works in progress for builder Justin Miandro, founder and owner of Title Building Group of Oakville. “The millennial couple who commissioned it had found a property they considered ideally situated, as it backed onto a parkland, and they have big dreams for the luxury home they wanted to build there,” he explains. “It will span some 7,000 square feet and feature soaring 11-foot ceiling heights.”
Realizing big visions is something of a specialty for Miandro, the first-ever winner of the Living Luxe 2024 Mastermind Builder Award for “turning dreams into reality by creating exquisite, tailor-made homes that embody luxury.” As with all of its projects, this company specializing in newly built homes will handle every aspect, from planning the design and architecture to managing the build.
For the design, the homeowners equate sensual and sophisticated French chateau architecture with opulent living. The builder turned to architectural designer Marin Zabzuni, owner of Torontobased design firm Contempo Studio, to interpret the vision. “The homeowners instantly loved his unique transitional take on the style,” Miandro says. “He created something timeless for them with many contemporary touches, customized to their tastes and budget that will make it a standout in the neighbourhood.”
The bulk of the budget was reserved for luxe interior finishes. So while the original plans called for a mainly limestone facade, Miandro suggested incorporating more economical yet highly chic custom white brick with precast details in a harmonized soft neutral palette. “Every project is a process,” he says. “Even though the owner may regard it as a forever home, many elements have to be shifted over time to balance wish lists with practicalities like investment and resale value.”
Blueprints show that the owners wanted to incorporate every modern feature to support their lifestyle. Since they are wellness-conscious, elements such as an advanced water filtration system are a must-have, as is a full home gym in the basement with easy access to the backyard and spa-like pool area. A huge walk-in dressing room tucked between the primary bedroom and bathroom elevates the suite to five-star hotel status. Taking Miandro’s advice, the owners opted to add a nanny or in-law suite, handy for visitors or if the family situation should change.
Designing the interior of the four-bedroom, three-bathroom plus powder room home is entrusted to Natasha & Michael Design Studio. The overall style exudes a thoughtful fusion of transitional and contemporary design. “We continued the neutral palette throughout the home to create a calm, cohesive flow but with modern interjections of black,” says co-founder and designer Natasha Gonzalez. Chateau elegance is bestowed through the use of such haut
de gamme materials as richly veined marble—white for the kitchen and bathrooms, black to add drama to the fireplace facing—and other natural stones. European white oak flooring is laid in a herringbone pattern. “The goal was to evoke a sense of understated elegance, where every element feels carefully curated, with an emphasis on comfort, function and timeless beauty,” she says.
Building a new home is a creative process that can go on for many months and involves a lot of back-and-forth. To reduce any potential stress for homeowners, Miandro, who has a degree in business administration marketing, makes every effort to keep his clients involved from the earliest stages. “They like being in on the process, so I provide them with daily digital access to schedules and charts,” he says. “That way, they can see the progress for themselves and be reassured.”
Since he began building homes in 2014, collaboration with a
core of top professionals has been key to Miandro’s success. From designers to suppliers to trades, they share his passion for exceeding expectations while keeping clients’ wishes foremost. At the next Living Luxe Design Show from April 24 to 27, for instance, Title Building Group will share a central booth with luxury real estate firm Barry Cohen Homes and Lancaster Custom Cabinetry.
The showstopper booth is designed by Gonzalez, who also is Miandro’s fiancée. She is a partner in another important creative project: the couple have a five-month-old son named Mason. Fatherhood has changed Miandro’s life in many ways. “I’ve always built homes with longevity in mind,” he says. “Now I look at my business, too, as something to hand down to my child. I hope that one day he’ll share my passion for the business and will want to pass it on to future generations.”
UP FROM THE GROUND
Sourcing inspiration from Europe and bringing it to life with VR, Toronto tile showroom Floorence Tile & Slab, led by unstoppable husband-and-wife duo Ali Khalilzadeh and Sareh Shalchi, is a step ahead.

Four or five times a year, Ali Khalilzadeh and Sareh Shalchi, co-owners of Floorence Tile & Slab, go tile shopping in Italy and Spain. The husband-and-wife duo travel there to visit their suppliers, who manufacture some of the world’s finest tiles, meet with designers in their studios and place their orders. But it’s also where they go to get excited and inspired by the latest European trends. These trips, they say, are how they fill their showroom in Caledonia, on the edge of Toronto’s design district, with a vast and sophisticated selection of largeformat tiles, smaller mosaics and porcelain slabs.
“On the market, there are a lot of lesser-quality products manufactured in China and India and elsewhere. But our idea, right from the start, was to be different: to import only exclusive and unique designer materials that can’t be found with our competitors,” says Khalilzadeh, who studied civil engineering and founded Floorence Tile & Slab 15 years ago alongside designer Shalchi.
Floorence Tile & Slab’s suppliers in Italy and Spain are both famous brands and niche boutique manufacturers, but all are recognized for their high-quality craftsmanship and a reputation for not only keeping up with the latest trends in European design but shaping them.
“We go often because it is exciting and because it gives us the chance to
see what is happening in Europe, which is often five or more years ahead of North America when it comes to design,” he explains. “Other tile stores order and re-order the same white subway tiles or grey-veined Statuario marble over and over, but we want to always be ahead of the curve—to have what’s newest and most beautiful, whether it is in a style that is timeless and traditional or completely contemporary.”
On their latest trips to Modena, Italy and Castellón, Spain this past fall and winter, the couple spotted a number of new enthralling design trends, including a move away from the grey tones that have dominated interiors for nearly a decade toward soft, warm whites and subtle beiges.
This year, rather than a T-shirt or souvenir cup, they came home with exclusive North American distribution rights to Automobili Lamborghini large-size slabs created by the iconic Italian automaker in collaboration with the prestigious ceramics firm Laminam. They also found themselves admiring a new generation of slabs carved using cutting-edge technologies to produce textured veining that seems to glow in certain light and tiles with satin finishes that are super-smooth to the touch yet still appear matte.
“The trend this year is toward matte finishes in contemporary design, leaving polished surfaces to more classic looks,” Khalilzadeh says. “But there is also room for whimsy. We saw flashes of exotic pinks
and blues and purples for feature walls.”
Khalilzadeh says Floorence Tile & Slab has differentiated itself from its rivals in another way: by maintaining not just samples but a wellstocked inventory of hundreds of tiles and slabs that are ready to go, unlike competitors who often require clients to place orders and wait for several weeks before delivery.
The company strives to make its showroom a design incubator— an inspiring space brimming with design ideas, where clients can see the materials in real-room settings. “We want to help them be able to visualize what our products will look like in their own homes,” he explains.
To help, Floorence Tile & Slab recently introduced virtual reality goggles that allow clients to see porcelain slabs as they
would look in various settings in the home, such as on a fireplace, television wall or kitchen counter.
“You put on the goggles, select the slab you like and then you get to walk around in the room, changing the colour and the finishes and also how things look at different times of day and night,”
Khalilzadeh says. “People love that. If you aren’t a designer, it can be hard otherwise to imagine the finished project.”
It’s a further testament to Khalilzadeh’s and Shalchi's commitment to putting Floorence Tile & Slab at the forefront of the design community. Whether offering the latest technology or stocking bold European designs, the duo keeps their eyes on the future, continuing to innovate and evolve so that Floorence remains at the cutting edge for decades to come.
