One line answer: You have to be a little crazy...Mmmm…

Maybe more than a little.

There is one common qualification for the ones who deserve to be called an entrepreneur. It is what separates them from the wannapreneurs. You do not need to go to a school or have Ivy League education for that qualification. Can you guess what it is?

Ask any entrepreneur what qualifies him to be one and you are bound to get various answers. Some of the infamous answers around it are:

I have a great Idea and I bet it will make millions.

I am too smart to work for others.

I want to do my own thing.

I have read many of successful people’s biographies.

I have seen the movie Social Network 25 times.

Everyone is becoming an entrepreneur these days.

I dropped out of college.

The Good news is that you do not get to hear too much about these kind of entrepreneurs. Sometime Editor-in-chief Anubhav Anand back there was a question Twitter- @anubhavanand tweeted by @YourStory – “Who is your favorite entrepreneur?” It made me think and I shared the story of my favorite entrepreneur. Here is an extended version of that answer. In Indian towns, there are some low-income group men who own a bicycle and every morning they smartly load up it with at least a 100 useful daily household items.

The 3 feet tall bicycle now extends 3-4 feet on both sides and sometimes doubles up the height as well. He takes this door-to-door around town in neighborhoods making his daily sale. That man is an entrepreneur with THAT COMMON qualification that most entrepreneurs possess.

That common qualification my friend is that they all take that PLUNGE, do it, and live it day in and day out. There is no two ways about it. The reason to be an entrepreneur could be a need or a desire. However, your qualification is your mindset and that is what separates the entrepreneurs from the wannapreneurs.

Oh and I meant it what I wrote right in the beginning. You got to be crazy to be an entrepreneur.

THE MECHANISM OF SELF-LOVE !

lady walked into my office a few months back.

After reaching a deep point in our conversation, she expressed to me – “You know Priya, I used to wear lovely combinations of bindis, bangles, kolhapuris, kurtas, dupattas, maxis and skirts in my time; but it all suddenly stopped. I asked her, “Why did you stop all of it? Did anyone ask you to?” & she replied, “I don’t even remember, Priya! Nobody asked me to but I felt plenty of responsibilities – household chores, two children, weight gain, aging, social responsibilities, people pleasing acts. I gave up things I loved. I stopped loving myself because I was taught care of others is of prime importance after marriage, hence I overlooked my existence. I left it all. I feel stuck in my own body, not knowing what to do next, wearing the same outfits repeatedly to cover all that is unwanted. I have lost my confidence.”

This way most women forget themselves while juggling between various roles, failing to strike a balance between work, home & self. Are you not important? Do you not require love & care from yourself? Remember each one of us is unique and there is no other individual exactly like you or me. You are as valuable as your husband, kids, parents, and relatives.

There is a beautiful saying for this, “Know first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.”

If you are not satisfied/ happy with yourself, you will never be satisfied/ happy in your life, right. So take care of your - skin, hair, body, health, thoughts and actions. If you liked applying a red lipstick, do it. If you like a particular color, just wear it. It is your life, make it colorful.

This time I want to empower all you girls & women to love yourself, spend time with yourself, and introspect on these questions: “Who are you? What do you like? What do you not like? What are your assets? What are your goals? Personal style is about getting to know you first. It’s about being connected with the very essence of who YOU are - and be confident about it There is a beautiful saying for this, “Know, first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.”

There are a million different ways to strengthen your body image, and all of them are worth exploring. Personal style is one of the ways to transform your self-image. EMBRACE THE CHANGE: Firstly, it is essential to accept that your body is changing, continuously. It is never going to be the same as when you went to college. And I thank God for it! As women, we tend to gain weight after marriage, or after having kids. Even though the weight may go away, but your body will never look the same again. Keep an open mind & understand your body will change for good. Change is the only constant. Then make changes to your wardrobe and style - Throwing on a skirt that works with your curves instead of hiding them, is a simple way. Slipping on a fantastic pair of jeans can illustrate those legs fine. Finding styles, colors and textures that enhance your natural assets can help you see how gorgeous you are right now -- and have been all along. Just by changing the thoughts for your body followed by change in clothing, shoes, and accessories that adorn your body, you can change your relationship with that body for the better.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS! You are the only one to dress and groom your body, so you, alone, are in charge of how you appear to others. Since you’ve got to get dressed anyway, why not take the opportunity to broadcast a few key pieces of information about yourself to the observing world? All I am saying is – clothes communicate, style communicates; So you got to have a message in your appearance. Doing so can build pride and confidence, establish your uniqueness and help you decide which aspects of you to highlight. The Choice is YOURS! BEGIN WITH RESPECTING “YOUR”SELF! Each day we meet thousands people and even before we speak a word, we speak visually by our first glance i.e.

appearance. If you are one of those who feel “appearance doesn’t matter,” it means you are okay with your voice being ignored. One of the easiest ways to broadcast respect for you is to dress with care & while having a thought behind it.

Dressing with care means - finding clothes that fit and suit you, considering your lifestyle and the message you want to send across before choosing your ensemble and selecting garments that make you feel comfortable, powerful, proud, and truly yourself.

CONNECT BETWEEN LOOKING GOOD AND FEELING GOOD: There is a cycle crveated when you do not feel happy about yourself. The cycle begins with self-neglect and ends at low self-confidence: look bad, feel bad, feel out of place, and feel neglected and on and on. Whereas, the cycle of self- love begins with self-care – If you are happy with yourself, you do not need anyone else to validate you. When you put effort into your appearance, you are less likely to hide from mirrors, eat nothing and diet, and withdraw from social situations.

When you put effort into your appearance, you are more likely to receive compliments -- important sources of external feedback that encourage you to continue putting effort into your appearance. Caring about how you present your physical self to the world makes you present in your body. Presence in your body feeds itself, creating more care. It reminds you that you can control how you feel about yourself. Moreover, that’s a powerful thing.

Everyone can use personal style as a tool for cultivating self-confidence and reflect self-respect. You can utilize your natural beauty to reflect your undeniably amazing self, outward to the observing world. And when you do, you may find that you’ve kick-started the mechanism of self-love.

In today’s world, each one of us wants to be independent. However, when it comes to financial independence, we see a bit of hesitation emerge. So why not think on similar lines when it comes to being financially independent? Financial independence has two parts to it – earning one’s own income, and taking investment decisions on your own. A survey conducted by a leading money manager a couple of years ago, seems to indicate that only 23% of working women take their own investment decisions.

The rest depend on their spouse or others for the same.

A young working woman needs to plan for instances such as higher education, a wedding break, or maternity leave.

There could also be a case where her income is insufficient to sustain regular living expenses. If you are a homemaker, it is equally important to have a plan in place. The common risks which both working and non-working women may run into could be a divorce or turning into a widow at an early age or a risk of living longer than their husbands. All these may put them in a situation where they may have to take upon themselves the entire family responsibility from being able to having a decent standard of living to funding children’s education and weddings, as well as their own retirements and medical expenses.

IF YOU HAVE NOT STARTED THINKING ON THESE LINES, NOW IS THE TIME TO BEGIN THINGS TO DO IF YOU ARE STARTING OFF SET GOALS If you are working, then you could have goals like having a regular income during your break for studies, or either wedding or maternity.

Constant rubbing of eyes can not only lead to darkening of under eye area but can also cause appearance of fine lines.

Fruit peels and lasers generally help in lightening under eye dark circles. For people who have sunken eyes, minimally invasive treatments like hyaluronic acid fillers help to a big extent by taking away the tired look. One could use lightening creams containing vitamin C, kojic acid and arbutin at night. Acrylics are the oldest form of nail extension in the modern beauty industry, and have long since been a staple due their staying power. The acrylic itself is a mixture of liquid monomer and a powder polymer, which when combined forms a hard protective layer that is sculpted over the natural nail.

Acrylic nail extensions will only become hard when exposed to air, and when this happens and the

process is complete the nails get a strong and glossy base that is a fantastic for colour application.

The procedure is a multi-step process that usually involves preparing the natural nail by cleaning, shaping, buffing and cuticle work, then applying artificial tips to add length (if required) and the acrylic on top.

WHAT ARE GEL NAILS? Gel is a special mixture that is applied either on top of an artificial nail extension, or directly onto the natural nail bed to strengthen the nail and promote natural growth. The gel is usually applied in very fine layers, with the nail technician ‘curing’ or ‘sealing’ the gel with a UV light between each layer so that the finished result is hard but still flexible with a natural looking glossy finish which is both instantly dry and chip resistant.

Whilst gel can be applied on top of an artificial extension to add length, they are particularly good for individuals who have very short,

weak or bitten nails because they allow the nail to strengthen and grow below the layer of gel

odern European Cuisine seems to have become quite a fad in the culinary world in the recent past.

However, while there are many places that boast of it, few actually stay true to the legacy and tradition of Modern European cuisine. Being a foodie myself, my tryst with modern European cuisine has been forever on the go. However, if it is some place that serves it like it is, that is The Korner House, in Bandra.

This recently opened restaurant has

been swaying the crowds with its refined commitment to make modern European food, just the right way.

We got a chance to speak to Arup Saini, the man behind the show, and got to know a few of his best-kept principles when it comes to food.

Have you always been in the hospitality sector?

“Perhaps, that is the only art that I could learn in my life so far. It has been almost 15 years that I have been serving this industry but yes, with customized approach to different operational scenarios at different stages of my life.”

Why the name, The Korner House?

“The name came from its position and location. You climb a short flight of steps & enter into a cobbled garden where you dine with friends and family in a homely atmosphere. The place is nestled in the area where you would hardly find a c(K)orner for a quaint little eatery.

Hence, the name, The Korner House.”

How did the idea of the restaurant come about?

“Honestly, it is not a new development for us. We have been there in the business of Hospitality for almost 7 years. It is just one of our new ventures.”

Tell us a little bit about your earlier experiences in the sector?

“I am a professional hotelier with an experience of over fifteen years in Hospitality Industry, providing utmost guest service in Food & Beverage Department, with excellent Public Relations & to lead & manage a sales driven team in the organization. Previously, I have handled top Indian and International delegates, including Ambassadors and Ministers of various countries for various high-

“Initially, my idea was to call it THE KORNER HOME not a HOUSE. The idea for all our guests was to give a feeling of coming home and come home to the warmth of The Korner House all day, every day and experience the artistic presentation & unique flavors hand-crafted for every palate - The vegetarian, carnivorous and vegan alike!

Basically, our focus is on providing experience than just a cuisine. Yes, we serve European but there is more to it, which you need to experience.”

What is the best part about the menu?

“I would say, menu is just an interface for us to interact with our guests. The range of items will surely confuse you while reading. Of course, you will not find a long narrative of the menu either from any of staffs.

With a reasonably priced menu, complete with modern European entree’s, stylish flatbreads, appetizers & an ingenious range of cocktails, this cozy diner throws its arms open to anyone with a taste for the extraordinary.”

With such a lavish space, do you have some new ideas lined up? Something like a celebrity chef pop up?

“Yes, we have many themed and act based events planned.”

INGREDIENTS 2 cups cooked chickpeas 10-12 cherry tomatoes, chopped 1 small cucumber, chopped Âź cup sliced olives Handful of parsley, chopped For the dressing: 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons vinegar 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large bowl, combine chickpeas, cucumber, tomatoes, olives, and parsley.

2. Slowly drizzle olive oil, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and combine.

3. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

4. Store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 4-6 days.

NOTE: You can mix the ingredients for the dressing separately and drizzle over.

Spicy Paprika Hummus

Enjoy this all-time favorite snack with crackers or raw veggies

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups cooked chickpeas, (1 can chickpeas, drained) • ½ cup tahini • Lemon juice (one lemon) • 4 to 5 garlic pods • 1 tablespoon spicy ground paprika or paprika paste (use more or less per taste) • ½ cup water • For garnish, olive oil to drizzle and roasted cumin seeds INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a food processor, add chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, chilli paprika paste, garlic, and pulse.

2. Start with ¼-cup water and puree until smooth.

3. Add more water as needed to reach the desired consistency.

Garnish with an olive oil drizzle and top with roasted cumin seeds.

NOTE: You can make a delicious hummus wrap with crunchy veggies for a quick lunch!

Avocado & Smashed Chickpea open Sandwich This open sandwich is to die for!

Bid goodbye to the boring side salad with this bowl of crisp, baby spinach, juicy pear slices, sweet pomegranate seeds, and tangy goat cheese. Paired with a homemade, Apple cider vinaigrette, this salad is a healthy feast of fresh and seasonal ingredients.

INGREDIENTS • 6-8 piece Nachani bread toast • 2 cups cooked chickpeas, smashed (boil and smash season with salt to taste) • 1 large avocado, chopped • ¼ cup chopped onion • 2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • Salt, pepper and crushed red pepper INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large bowl, add cooked chickpeas and use a fork to smash it.

2. Add chopped avocado, onions, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and lemon juice and combine them together.

3. Scoop it over nachani bread toast and sprinkle crushed red pepper.

NOTE: The avocado and chickpea mixture changes its color after couple of hours so I do suggest eating it immediately or prepare everything in advance and add avocados right before serving.

In a country like India, where music is highly respected as an art, as a profession it is barely regarded too much. Most families would rather prefer their children as engineers and doctors instead of musicians and singers. Meet Mohit, the senior brand manager at Furtados music who has combined his passion for music and turned it into a successful profession.

The passion for music has been a part of his childhood, when at the age of seven, he began playing the tabla. Soon after, he realized his taste in music and moved on to drums. The love for music reached newer heights when he formed his own band in college, and the tryst with drums became even more serious.

Mohit also underwent a diploma in foreign trade, after which he worked for a brief time with Ogilvy, only to realize his true calling. However, what makes Mohit successful is not just his passion, but also rather, what he chose to make of it. Despite working with Furtados full time, his entrepreneurial spirit always remained high. That, coupled with the love to propagate the love for drumming, made him begin taking drumming classes for different age groups over the weekend.

After teaching for a couple of years, he realized the importance of promoting the talents of his students at a more professional level. As luck may have it, his resourcefulness worked to his favour, and this budding entrepreneur

organized the first ever-drumming musical showcase for his students at the Mithibai college auditorium in 2015.

The event known as ‘Drumebaaz’ saw more than 80 spectators who came in to pledge their support to Mohit and his students. “Most people, when choosing music, take the easy way out. It is the easiest to learn vocals. If one wants to take a step further, they go for the keyboard or the guitar.

That ways, drums are the least preferred mode of music when it comes to professional learning due to cost as well as space. But trust me, once you get the magic of drumming, you would

never want to stop.” This is how he explained his love for drumming to us.

A constant go- getter, Mohit has since then been on the lookout to take his music and the hard work of his students to the next level, and hence ended up organizing the second season of Drumebaaz in January, 2016.

The event expanded in scale with an audience of over a hundred and twenty people and RJ Sucharita as the chief guest for the event. The event was supported wholeheartedly by Furtados music along with tie-ups from other verticals as well.

“I believe that the claps from the audience is the biggest form of appreciation. You learn the techniques in class, but it is the stage which teaches you how to play and it is exactly this joy which I wanted by students to experience.

I like to call it, the celebration.” Beamed Mohit about the thrill of performance Ever since he was a child, rhythm is something that always kept him going, and it was this rush of rhythm that has forever remained. With a zeal to explore new boundaries, and to take his music class as well as students to the top notch of their skill, Mohit is working relentlessly to gather support

and expand the scale of Drumebaaz.

He smiled and ended the interview with a very powerful quote that pretty much summed up his enthusiasm for his venture.

“Every start has an end for a better beginning.”

TACKLING DRUG ABUSE

KRIPA FOUNDATION, OVER THE YEARS HAS BEEN FOCUSING ON REHABILITATING SUCH DRUG ABUSERS, AND HAS BEEN TRYING TO HELP INDIVIDUALS IN COPING FROM DRUG-INDUCED DISORDERS. Father Joseph Pereira, a catholic priest and a true Gandhian, dedicated his life to these people and the results of his labour of love can be seen in the thousands of alcoholics and drug addicts who have gone on to become productive members of society.

After being appointed the Parish Priest at Mount Carmel’s Church in Bandra, he came in close contact with the fast spreading fire of alcoholism and drug abuse amongst the residents.

It was after this that he began the Kripa Foundation in 1981. Since then this Public Charitable Trust has spread its tentacles all over India with 69 varied facilities addressing Chemical Dependency and HIV/ AIDS in 12 states in the country, namely, Maharashtra (Mumbai, Vasai, Pune), Gujarat (Baroda), Goa (Anjuna,), Karnataka (Mangalore), West Bengal (Kolkata & Darjeeling), Manipur (Imphal), Nagaland ( Kohima & Zuneboto), Meghalaya (Shillong),Assam(Guwahati) Uttar Pradesh (Bareilly), Rajasthan (Jaipur) & Delhi. The Government of India as well as international and national funding agencies fund the foundation.

“In 1981, when Kripa first began, we mostly received cases of alcoholism in the post retirement age group. There was not much drug abuse in those days.

The western regions of the country usually reported issues of alcoholism, whereas heroin and opium abuse was common in the North Eastern regions of the country.” Explained Father Joe, as he took us through the initial years of Kripa. However, things have pretty much changed in the current years.

Father Joe explained how the cases of alcoholism have been on the decline and in the recent years, drug abuse of various kinds have come up, especially amongst the youth. The average age has dropped down to as young as fourteen years old.

“In Bandra, alcohol has affected not only the affluent but also the poorest of the poor.

The affluent and middle classes have been mixing around, and there is a whole new group of drug users, mostly college students.

From 1984, during the time of Julio Rebeiro, until the current times, the police have not been able to curb this menace for a variety of reasons. In Bandra, a new kind of addiction, ‘meth’, which was earlier not even in the drug list for a long time, has been creating a new menace. An average college kid

A person can get over chemical dependency by medical help, however, the dual disorder triggered by abuse means that the mental health of the individual needs to be preserved via self-help models, psychiatry as well as yoga and meditation.

This is the approach that Kripa has been using to make sure that people affected by substance abuse can obtain holistic healing.

He has been working towards the cause of drugs and alcohol abuse ever since 1968. However, the idea to establish Kripa came out of a need to establish an organization that could partake the issues of the masses at a greater level.

The latest award being The Padma Shree Award for 2009 in Social work and the CPCI (Catholic Priests Conference of India) National Excellence Award in 2011.

X-BOX AT BREWBOT! Located off Link Road, Brewbot Eatery and Pub Brewery spells good news for all beer aficionados in the city. I reached 30 minutes before ‘Hoppy Hours’ ended (4-8 pm) and the crowd had just started to arrive. With plush booths to spend long drinking nights and decor covered with debris from a dystopian future with bot propaganda graffiti on the walls, I found the ambience as edgy as the beers. The brewery opened its doors almost two years ago, allowing Mumbaikars to imbibe surrounded by enormous vats of artisanal brews like Skywalker (German Kolsch), Mojo Rising (Mid western pale ale), Floating Head (German Hefeweizen) and Black Mamba (Chocolate Oatmeal Stout) and the newest addition and an already crowd favorite, Bot-work Orange, a Belgian Witbier. There has been a rise in the number of breweries in Mumbai, but none of them come close to Brewbot’s artisanal craft brews.

They also happen to be the only ones who brew a mid western pale ale in the city. It was a pleasure seeing the beers being prepared from scratch right in front of my eyes. Each of them has its own unique identity which my server was more than happy to educate me about. For hops aficionados, they also offer a tour of the brewery! By day the bots serve patrons with exciting deals like their newly launched ‘express lunch’, and by night the lights dim, the brewery transforms. They regularly hold DJ events and theatre shows. In addition to this, they have installed a Xbox downstairs where I enjoyed a glass of ‘Bot-work Orange’ with a side of Fifa!

Meet Sandhya Shetty, an entertainment professional, who had the tenacity to multi task and pursue her passion into martial arts as well.

She gives us major ambition goals!

Were you always a sporty kid?

Sports and I are inseparable. I have always been a sporty person and even during school and college, I always excelled in sports and was an all rounder.

How and when did the idea of becoming a model come around?

College festivals were the only time when I participated in fashion shows and, did a bit of choreography apart from walking the ramp. My personality

was strikingly unique is one comment I would always get. My style sense definitely pushed me towards the world of fashion.

How was it like to be a part of the Miss India pageant?

Miss India was a stepping-stone into the world of modeling for me. The entry sent just for fun during college days turned out to be one hell of a career choice, which I truly succumbed to.

Did you ever think you would end up into modelling and the entertainment industry?

I wanted to be a lawyer or be an army officer. I was creatively very strong in my vision and also sometimes enjoyed posing for camera and loved wearing good clothes but never thought that I would end up as a model, actor, and compere.

how did you come around to being associated with karate?

I am a bundle of energy waiting to explode all the time. Sports was always something that I enjoyed and while I was modelling and acting I very strongly felt the urge to do some serious sporting activity and martial art for me, was a unexplored zone. I love challenges so I just plunged into it. My heart and my energies are always for the love of what I do, and not just glamour or money.

What motivated you into being a part of this form of martial art and selfdefense?

Women are always complimented for their beauty and intellect but rarely one hears of them being physically strong.

I love things, which are uncanny & challenging. Self-defense was one area which I felt was necessary for every individual and if I ever want to talk about it or create awareness then I

should be equipped myself first. Every single time I went in the ring to fight, I loved the instinctive fighting spirit and the power to win for the state and then for the country.

What will be your advice to young women aspiring to make a mark in the world?

Follow your passion and believe in yourself to achieve it. There is no right or wrong time, one has to take a plunge and just work hard towards his or her goals. Winning should be the goal and whatever happens just keep living life because it is beautiful.

In a country like India, how important is it to have self- defense skills?

In India and in any part of the world one should always be able to protect oneself.

Self-defense gives the self -confidence and the belief that you are safe and can do anything and everything with great mental and physical strength.

How was it when Akshay Kumar called you before and after

your commonwealth karate championship?

I was so happy to get the surprise call from Akshay Kumar before my fight to wish me. He is a Bollywood superstar and amazing in martial arts himself, and so fit that he inspires so many in the country. After my gold win for the country, he congratulated me and told me to keep fighting and to come someday to his academy and have one session of self-defense.

Entertainment, modelling, acting, hosting, and karate, how do you juggle between all of these?

I love multitasking and I love to do different things always. Time management is a must and sheer hard work. I love my work, I am very passionate about life, and everything that life has to offer. I want to live & love every moment because we born for that.

How has the support been like from your friends and family?

My family is the grounding factor in my

life. My friends have been a support in every possible way and have encouraged me to achieve more and more. The love of family and friends pushes me to just keep going for more.

You have already won accolades for the country, how does it feel?

Winning for the country is the biggest pride one can experience in a lifetime.

Standing on the podium and receiving the gold medal, with the Indian flag wrapped on my shoulders was one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

What plans do you have for the future?

I love to do different things and I plan to do some good films, and explore my acting skills. I love creating things so would definitely dabble into the design space and get into interiors. Focus on promoting martial art and self -defense remains. Food industry is also very close to my heart because I have seen my family into restaurants right from childhood and that’s a connect which I will figure too very soon.

In the middle of the ever buzzing and fast-paced hood of Bandra, there is a place, where time attains a relative significance. A place that takes us right back in to time, almost four hundred years ago, into the lands of the earl East Indians in Mumbai. Welcome to Ranwar Village, one of the earliest East Indian settlements in Mumbai, which dates back to the seventeenth century. Bordered by Hill Road, and the upcoming and posh space called Bandra reclamation, Ranwar has a distinct identity of its own.

It is said that the Portuguese originally inhabited Ranwar after they laid their claim over major tracts of land in the coastal regions of Bandra. Since then, Ranwar has been home to a number of Catholic communities. Even today, it is homev to a large number of Catholic families, living in distinctly quaint houses, bearing an old world charm of their own.

The narrow lanes of Ranwar bear testimony to its old colonial past. In fact, as legend goes, during the infamous plague in the colonial era, Mumbai was hit by a major bout. Under such circumstances, the residents of Ranwar prayed, and built a cross, which is today commonly known as the plague cross.

There are more than fourteen crosses, which have lined the lanes of Ranwar, and during the month of lent, Catholics gather in groups and pray at each of these crosses.

Today, the area of Ranwar is surrounded by a number of big settlements and faces the evident threat of development. We spoke to a few of the residents and they recalled of the older days with a strong sense of nostalgia. Ranwar, in those days was filled with liveliness, and parties and celebrations were the order of the day. Even today, the place has a strong sense of community. So much so, that the locality has boards lined in different places, which speak of the heritage of Ranwar, and the best VCVpart is that the residents with an aim to preserve and restore the lost heritage have constructed them.

Some houses date back to even more than a hundred years, and are built in typical British colonial style with red roofs and intricate doors. Moreover, they have been working endlessly to restore the old buildings and have been trying to bring this to the notice of the civic authorities.

Even today, you can see women walking around to the crosses for rosary sharp at eight in the evening, while the men relax and huddle together outside each other’s houses.

Today, in the wake of rapid modernization, a large number of young people have been migrating to other countries, leaving the good old Ranwar, stripped of the usual liveliness. However, the ones that remain behind have a tireless spirit and are not ready to give up on the place they call home.

The community keeps on organizing meets, and festivals to keep up the spirit of Ranwar alive, and is constantly battling real estate giants to thwart the entry of high rises.

The theme this year being Make in India was highlighted by augmenting aspects of Indian culture within events like fashion show, dance competition, rangoli, glass painting, nail art and many more.

Working towards the success of ethos it was inaugurated on 4th February by Honourable Shri Aslam Shaikh, the young and dynamic MLA of Malad, Mumbai. His benign presence gave our fest a glorious start. The three day festival showcased solo singing which was judged by the renowned singer Vishal Kothari and dance competition judged by Bombay Rockers, the famous dance group led by Mr. Raja Naidu.

SKREAM’16

Skream ’16, the official sports festival of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering, went up and running on 5th February with the excitement levels at an all time high. The opening ceremony began with an introduction of all the home teams followed by an impressive malakham performance and freestyle football.

The chief guest, Mansi Joshi, addressed the students with her own bit of inspiration on the spirit of sportsmanship, after which all 14 sports commenced in full swing.

The fourth and last day of Skream was a bitter sweet experience having a lot to teach all the students and participants. With a few glitches, the festival ended on a different note than expected but it taught the young students that highs and lows are to be taken in stride. Staying true to their mascot, the Phoenix, the students definitely did light the fire within and made the festival a hit. Overall everyone took home good memories and experiences and Skream ’16 took the sports festival of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering to an all time high.

Skream witnessed participation from colleges from not just Mumbai, but all over the country in this 4 day National level Sports festival. An intensive 3 days followed with different colleges playing against each other to win the prestigious contingency trophy. The sports amenities of the Vidyavihar campus were state of the art and left no space for any complaint. All the events went on smoothly with healthy competition breeding sportsmanship among students.

Everyone had something to look forward to in Skream ’16.

If not to participate, students came in considerable numbers to cheer for their college and enjoy other informal events like glow football and archery.

This year, the festival had multiple inter-collegiate competitions, enjoyable informal events and highlight events that include a rib-tickling comedy night, an extravagant pro night and EDM night.

Symphony ’16 stayed true to its promise and proved to be a fun filled 3-day cultural bonanza providing healthy competition and high entertainment value to the participants and the crowd alike.

The Symphony shield consisting of Intra College, inter department competitions were also held with students enthusiastically cheering for their respective departments.

There were a large number of inter college competitions for the students with exciting incentives to offer. The major competitions were the Symphony Idol-the solo singing competition, the group dance competition, Masterchef Somaiya, Amateur Bands, Street Play and Somaiya’s Got Talent, providing students a platform to showcase all their

The first time women’s day was celebrated in New York, on the 28th of February, 1908. In those days, it actually had major political significance. That very year, 8th of March had been selected by the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union to stage a strike, which was called off before it even began. This inspired other women based counterparts in different parts of Europe.

Years later, the United Nations conferred 8th of March as International Women’s Day, and since then it is being celebrated the world over.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.

We thought you might be on the lookout for some out for some out of the box ways to celebrate Women’s Day and hence got you a list: Visit the local shelter and donate to victims of abuse and violence. Try to make them feel empowered by discussing your stories.

Help with the education of a girl child. When you teach a child, you teach a generation and there is no better empowerment than education.

Get together with your gang of girls and go out for a nice long brunch. Make it a point to catch up with each other and rekindle the bond.

Men can make it a point to acknowledge the women in their life by doing small things such as preparing a meal, or writing notes, or just a plain good conversation. Women love being expressed to, and this could be a good moment.

Kids could bake a cake, or help their mom out with the chores. The small gestures always make the major difference.

Gift your special woman, a treat at the spa and make her feel rejuvenated.

Gift purple flowers to women who have inspired you, or made you feel happy in some way or the other. You could also add small notes of appreciation along with it. The color purple is the official symbol of International Women’s Day.

Have a movie marathon with the girls. Pick out your best women oriented films and make the day even more inspiring.

• Use organic colors to stay safe. Dry holi is always the best idea, however if you are a lover of rain dance, then prep up your skin with some cold cream or oil before you enter the party. Post holi care includes rubbing lemon wedges to your skin as it has natural bleaching properties.
