EDITOR’S NOTE

The Community Fridge It was a regular workday in the office. I got a message from my friend Simple Kaul, asking me if I knew where this “Community Fridge” was located and who to contact for the same. Assuming it was a typo of sorts I asked, “What’s that?” And that turned the regular workday into… lets just say anything but a regular day. There was news in the paper about a Community Fridge in Versova but no contact information or exact location. “Inspector Pyare” (that’s my fictional Detective character of my movie script) got to work on finding what my friend wanted to know. Moreover there was a pressure when she said, “You are Living Local. You should know”. What is this Versova Community Fridge: The Internet at that point in time had one solo article floating on this neighborhood Initiative. A fridge placed at the corner of a main street near a temple where people can put their leftover food for the needy. That was good enough for people to be excited. And so were we to find out. The first look of the Community Fridge: On the main JP Road next to a Shiv Mandir stood this very ordinary looking 3 level glass-door fridge. Through the glass doors one could see packets of food and some sorted plates with food in them. Simple had come along with another one of her friend Maninee Mishra (TV Actress) to check out this fridge. All that hype and we didn’t know what to make out of it.

Editor-in-chief

Anubhav Anand @anubhavanand www.anubhavanand.com/blog

Until the moment that followed. An old lady from the street opened the glass door of the fridge herself and picked out a plate of ready food for her. Just like that. A 12-year-old boy reached out to the fridge and followed suit. To read more… Continued on page 28

Fat to Fit A flat stomach is a precious possession to those who have one, and a dream to those who do not.. How to achieve that dream body or a flat belly? Is the most asked question. So how can you get there?

Unfortunately there is no magic pill or short cut, but the good news is, its possible with consistency. Many factors come into play when trying to lose that bulge, age, genetics, medical history and most importantly the condition you are in when you start. If that paunch is your concern, attack it from all the fronts (weight training, cardio and diet) only doing those ab exercises won’t help. Great looking body is more about nutrition. Eat healthy and natural. Consult a professional because your contributing factors are different than your friends or relatives so don’t follow someone else’s diet plan. Minimise junk food and sugar and you will start seeing the difference. Along with nutrition, your exercise schedule will take you towards your goal so choose wisely. Your body type, medical conditions and daily lifestyle comes into consideration while you choose your regime. For example opt for swimming if you have joint issue than any high intensity and jumping exercises or don’t enrol for programme which you may not be able to continue for longer period due to your lifestyle. Weight training or strength training helps

you to gain lean muscle mass which will increase your metabolism along with aerobic exercises which conditions your heart. Working on all major muscle group instead of only abdominal area will help you achieve that apt body you have been dreaming for. Consistency is important, yes you need to understand, any crash diet or exercise may give you temporary result but will it last? Your favourite celebrity who’s got that flat tummy and apt body has worked out and ate healthy for months together and after achieving that result they don’t stop , you know that very well, so why to stop! Make fitness your lifestyle. Consult and move towards your target with dedication. ----------------

The Ground

Beneath Their Feet Vile Parle Premier League

V

ile Parle Premier League is the brainchild of Siddarth Sabapathy and Meghan Pradhan cofounded with Sagar Giri and Sunit Kanyalkar. Siddarth and Meghan started the league in the year 2011right after they finished their HSC examinations. They always wanted to create an organized structure for football in Mumbai and thus came about the idea of Vile Parle Premier League. Vile Parle Premier League is currently Mumbai’s biggest franchise based football. It’s tagline-“Football for the youth by the youth”. It is a story of how entrepreneurship in grassroots sports can create a remarkable community story. The USP of the league is that it is completely a youth affair - totally organized and managed by the youth in the age group of 15-28. Initially the league had only boys team participating in it, but from the 5th Season onwards the girls teams also participated in the league. The league is recognized and affiliated to the Mumbai District Football Association. Though the name of the league sounds local centric, players from Mumbai District (994), Thane district (120), Navi Mumbai district (60) and Palghar (46) participate in the Vile Parle Premier League. “It is not only a privilege but also a dream come true to see this league grow and expand”, said the founders of the Vile Parle Premier League. What started as just an idea, the league has today reached more than 2000+ players over the 7th edition. The girls teams are playing their 3rd edition with over 200+

12

players showcasing their talents and proving that girls are no less than boys. Another local tagline that the League supports is “Ab Har Zubaan Football Bolega”. The League also acts as a platform for I League team, Mumbai FC to scout for budding footballers. The league commences in the month of May and it comprises of different divisions catering to different age groups.

THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS: • Premier League -1st Division (Under- 21) • Championship - 2nd Division (Under- 21) • Girls League - Open category league for girls • Youth League - Under- 16 • Junior League - Under 13 Every year the league has seen a turnout of around 12,000-15,000 spectators across the span of the league and is very well followed and supported by a large set of sports passionate people. The league also runs it’s own football academy, owns 2 Mumbai District Football Association Clubs and are also part owners of Universal Sports Forum. The forum pulls together all those passionate about sports and want to create a change in the society using sports as a medium. VPPL Season 7 is scheduled from May 13th till May 28th 2017

I

ts vacation time and travel season. Somethings to look forward to in the summer season besides the vacation should be a good healthy skin. Lot of us have already planned our itinerary for travelling but a little thought should also go towards taking care of our skin and protecting it. What is important is not to forget your skin care whilst you travel. You need to spare a little time for your skin care routine according to the place you are travelling to .The destinations may vary. It could be a hot destination like a beach holiday or a cold place like snow capped mountains. So along with a check list of packing that you do, try some smart planning for protecting your skin too. BEFORE the travel.... Avoid strong bleach , laser treatments, skin treatments like peels or cleanups just a day before travel as these can make skin sensitive to sun. Its better to plan these activities well in advance of your travel depending on your skin type. Apply extra moisturiser and drink lots of water before air travel since air journey can cause dehydration of skin.

14

Avoid products which make skin dry e.g creams containing retinoids.Remember to pack calamine lotion or aloe vera gel, body moisturising lotions preferably with an SPF, sunscreens which are water proof or water resistant with minimum SPF of 30 or 40, lip balm with an SPF, day and night creams for face, cleanser, medicated creams for rashes. DURING the travel.... Remember to apply a waterproof or resistant sunscreen all over the body, especially if you are swimming. Repeat your sunscreen two to three times a day. At high altitudes where weather is cold or where it would be cloudy , its still important to use sunscreen all the time. Skin usually feels dry during travel because of extreme heat or cold. So use moisturiser during the day and especially before sleeping. Do not forget to take care of hands and feet. Use Face Mist which contains rose water, glycerine or thermal spring water which keeps the face hydrated and rejuvenated. In case you are doing more of outdoor activities during day time, remember to use a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. POST travel.....

May 2017 | Volume 3 Issue 2 | Living Local Mumbai

Enjoy your travel, but at the same time take good care of skin so that you don’t have to regret later. Many times people develop photo allergy after travelling due to sun. Avoid doing skin treatments and peels at such times.Avoid laser hair reduction treatments immediately after travel because skin may be tanned. You could do hydrating facials to calm down the skin. And Vit C treatments or a q-switch laser to lighten the skin in case of tanning. Remember to continue your skin care routine whenever you travel. Dont let travel schedule affect your skin care regime. ENJOY YOUR TRAVEL AND ENJOY YOUR SKIN TOO HAVE A SKIN FRIENDLY VACATION

Got a question about your skin and didn’t know whom to ask? Please write in to mumbai@sakhiyaskinclinic.com and Dr. Sharmila Nayak would be happy to answer your queries.

#WHATWOMENWANT

We support stories that will redefine our future. A powerful take on positive initiatives specific to women within Mumbai.

orkouts are very personal, some of us prefer running to build stamina while others might go for something more focused towards strength. Every workout you pick depends on your personal wavelength; make sure it liberates your soul because fitness is more of a holistic wellbeing.

seems like a really tough task but as you start focusing on your form and strength your apprehension is replaced by the excitement of completing the daily WOD. I was amazed to see so many women lifting and pulling off such high intensity workouts. Their determination was shattering stereotypes, which expect women to be dainty and delicate. These women are tough!

Their determination was shattering stereotypes which expect women to be dainty and delicate. These women are tough !

CrossFit trains you to concentrate on your flexibility, agility, strength, balance and stamina. First rule of Cross Fit, is to break the routine, each workout day (WOD) is planned differently. This helps your body’s endurance and agility. There are lots of myths about CrossFit; it does not make you bulky in fact it will surely start pushing you towards looking leaner and stronger. Individuals should know their personal capacity, working out with a good trainer who understands your limit is very important.

I am excited by the word WOD Workout of the day. The first time I entered my CrossFit gym, I was extremely intimidated by their energy, it

and cool off stretching. I have personally never put myself through anything that requires such high vigor and athletic strength but CrossFit excites me. There are a lot of variations that keep you hooked on to this form. Beach WOD and Tabata (high intensity interval training) are my personal favorites. “Weights always scared me, now I love how they challenge me and I love to take it head on” A good Cross Fit session is incomplete without camaraderie amongst its group members. It is absolutely remarkable how everyone encourages and motivates each other to perform better, lift heavier and stay fitter. I would have never survived if I did not have a support system that pushed me on a tough day. The biggest lesson I learnt from CrossFit was to train my mind; it has the ability to sort every obstacle that pushes you towards negativity. Whatever you to pick to engage in, do it with all your heart and zest.

mumbairunners | Deepak has been a fitness enthusiast since his childhood and he has the natural knack on ‘everything fitness’. Deepak encouraged me to pick-up running and we started running twice a week with Sundays being long runs at Marine Drive. Instagram was new then and very niche however we both had active accounts there. Running was a natural high for us and we thought why not spread this across through a digital medium like Instagram. “Keeping Mumbai as our core love, we are trying to intersect the running, style, free-culture, athleisure angle which is a unique fit in the crowded social media content market. Further, we have extended our community through ‘Bombay Running’ which is a physical run-club. We run Thursdays & Sundays at different locations in Bombay. We have conducted campaigns for Adidas, Red Bull and various marathon events. However we don’t do direct marketing ads (event banners, etc.), our content & Genuity is at the core and we don’t compromise on it.” - Tushar Motwani

BOSCO’S MADONNA The entire Shrine has an exterior of Malad granite, golden-brown in colour. The Community

INITIATIVES

BY ANUBHAV ANAND

Continued from the Editors Note on page 07... The beauty of this ordinary looking community fridge was on the inside. The food kept by some good Samaritans that brought smiles on these faces. It was precious. It’s at that point of time when Maninee revealed that she wanted to come visit the place because it was her mother’s first death anniversary and she wanted to do something that would be worthy in her remembrance. “There is nothing bigger than feeding a hungry child for me. It’s the best karma possible”.

Fridge did not sit inside the head of Mr. Hegde for too long as they decided to go ahead with it once planned and not wait for all variables and logistical things to be in place. “We did their own research with some refrigerator vendors, recommendations from local restaurants, and came up with this unique looking fridge that serves the purpose. The original fridge did not have glass doors but we got it customized for the purpose that it was going to be placed out there. With the helping hand of the nearby Siv Temple trust we found a home for the fridge”.

It’s incredible how simple things evoke the emotions of the highest level inside us. Behind the Scenes: To get to know more on how this whole initiative came into existence I caught up in the evening with the 2 people behind the initiative- Advocate Gopal Hegde (President of the Versova Welfare Association) who donated the fridge and Dr Kshitij Mehta (Secretary of the association). The idea of a Community

28

As I pass the community fridge every time on my way, I wonder how some things are just meant to be. The location is next to a temple where the needy always find solace. A place where the energy by default resonates positivity and goodness. One of the few places where the giver and the needy both merge.

May 2017 | Volume 3 Issue 2 | Living Local Mumbai

“The Community Fridge is also about dignified living”, continues Mr. Hegde. “Spreading your hands in front of someone for food is something we did not want as part of this exercise. The idea was for the hungry and the needy to simply open the fridge and take what they needed without the monitoring or the gratitude around it from others. It’s a basic right to have food and it should be dignified in the way it is approached”. There was a lot of discussion between Mr. Hegde, Mr. Mehta and myself about how this well-received initiative should be taken forward and not restricted to one neighborhood. Mr. Mehta shared how he’s been bombarded with phone calls post the media attention the Community Fridge got. People from all over Mumbai want to start this thing in their neighborhood.

“While the intentions are good, it’s not about the money to setup and place a fridge. We want to make sure if someone wants

While it’s good to not let it go waste, what’s better is that the food reaches the people who may be deprived of the regular meal. And most importantly they get it in a dignified way.

“There is nothing bigger than feeding a hungry child for me. It’s the best karma possible”.

I remember when I tweeted about the Community Fridge and it’s pictures (the same ones that are in this article) the first time, there was so much interest over it by the people. People wanting to know where it is, how they could be involved, how they could help. It’s remarkable how just a simple thing like a Fridge can generate so much curiosity when it becomes a community initiative and has a cause attached to it.

our help to setup a similar thing around their local area, it’s done in the right way. There are lot of things to take into account to make sure it serves the purpose”, shared Mr. Mehta. There are a lot of things in the pipeline to grow this initiative and keep the people involved to do their part. It’s not about just giving money or food. It’s essentially about the act of not wasting food and helping it reach the needy mouths that need to be fed. We have so much left over food on a regular basis, be it from house parties or regular food at home. We end up giving it to our house help or building security guards.

We hope there are many more such initiatives that stem from the goodness in the hearts of the people. In these fastpaced, least-attention-span times, these are good reminders of going back to the basics of being human and the inherent nature of giving. So if the next time you look at that extra food lying around, think of a hungry stomach as it’s home and do your bit. If you would like to be associated with this cause, we would be more than happy to take this further as we choose to be part of such initiatives. Please feel free to write to me at editor@ livinglocalmag.com and lets join hands with the people who are taking this initiative forward. Where is the Community Fridge: Next to Shiv Mandir on the main JP Road. At the curve of the road near Café Coffee Day and WTF.

THE CITY STORY

Gaurav Kapur’s Guide to Weekend Cricket In Mumbai BY GAURAV KAPUR FOR THE CITY STORY

M

umbai is a cricket city. Spaces are carved out in parking lots, building driveways, and it wouldn’t be strange to see a Sunday gully cricket game on a main road. Gaurav Kapur tells The City Story his picks for enjoying weekend cricket in Mumbai.

For the super enthusiastic, stadium loving cricket freak You can catch hundreds of amateur cricketers playing on the road and amongst traffic, but there are many proper stadiums to appreciate the sport in Mumbai as well.

• DY Patil is a great sports facility, but the fact that it is half way to Pune can be a dampener. • The Wankhede is definitely the most energetic (or noisiest, depending on how old you feel), but for an international fixture or an IPL game it can be a chore to line up along Marine Drive before you eventually get in. • I would recommend CCI (Brabourne Stadium) for the best viewing experience. Especially if you can smooth talk a member to take you in. Then you’re aboard the old-school express, with food and drink on the balcony while you watch the cricket. No big ticket matches here, but you can still see quite a few engaging games. This is a cricket-watching experience from the colonial era.

For a lazy afternoon spent people watching (as well as cricket watching) Shivaji Park is considered the cradle of Bombay cricket (from the pre Mumbai era). Many modern day greats have learned their skills on the hallowed turf of this historic ground. Sitting atop the low boundary wall trying to spot the next Gavaskar or Tendulkar is still heaps of fun. There’s an idli vendor on a cycle who used to park himself along that wall, and that chutney was good enough to use as a face pack. If he’s still there, apply it on your face, stretch out on the wall, soak up the sun and avoid the boundary balls. Or you could just eat the idli and watch the cricket if you don’t want to get as immersive an experience as me.

The international cricketers are on the road for most of the year, but the MCA club in BKC has the most up to date practice facilities favoured by the modern lot. When in the city, the local Indian cricketers are to be found here. The walls are high, the security is tight. But that shouldn’t stop you. Disclaimer: if you get caught, the CIA and I will deny any knowledge of your existence. Godspeed.

For the visitor aching to play a spot of cricket A few years ago, I had filmed a small feature for CNN in which I took the crew to the cricket grounds of Mumbai

There’s a real shortage of good sports bars in the city. There used to be a fair sprinkling a few years ago: the screens, the pool tables, the familiar faces. But now a few beers...

in the monsoon. We wanted to capture the love for cricket this city has always had. Where even the monsoons and knee-high grass can’t stop cricket games. In fact, the Kanga League is the only wet weather cricket tournament in the world and has been on for almost 70 years. Come rain or shine, there’s always some cricket being played in the city. So there is plenty to watch, but you can’t just join a game willy-nilly. With so many clubs and small leagues competing for space with real-estate builders, you might need to carry a club to force your way into a game (aforementioned disclaimer applies). There are a few indoor simulators that can be a bit of fun. They’re not a patch on the real deal like Azad Maidan, but as far as synthetic experiences go, this virtual game is a happy quick fix.

Bonus Another spot I quite enjoy is the stretch of gymkhana grounds running along Marine Drive. Some are used for weddings these days, but on a weekend you could see four or five games happening along that half kilometre stretch. Each major religion seems to have their own gymkhana, but the cricketers and viewers needn’t have any religious affiliation. Cricket is the principle religion in these parts, one that this entire city is on the same page about.

For the pub lovers There’s a real shortage of good sports bars in the city. There used to be a fair sprinkling a few years ago: the screens, the pool tables, the familiar faces. But now a few beers and your buddies in someone’s TV room has become “my local”. Also, unless it’s a T20 game, sitting in a bar for a full day (or five) is not really encouraged (by friends and family).

For the stalkers hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite cricketers, security/high walls/ barbwire notwithstanding May 2017 | Volume 3 Issue 2 | Living Local Mumbai 31

TAROTSCOPE

you will find everything you need to deal with situations, so have faith in your own destiny. Expenses will increase, but in a good way. Health will benefit with a moderate approach to variety.

YOUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2017

THE YEAR AHEAD FOR TAURUS Happy Birth Anniversary! A very good year lies ahead of you! A venture, about which you were not very sure, but knew was important enough for your attention, will now start to unfold in a very fruitful manner. Finances will be excellent, with scope for enlarging investments. Health will benefit from regular physical activities. (Please note: The guide uses Zodiac Signs according to date of birth, and not according to your Sun Sign, Moon Sign or Ascendant. There is no cusp.) ARIES (March 21st-April 20th): While the challenges of May will appear to be simple and usual enough, it is your good fortune that the month will pass before confusions can deepen, and all will be well. Do be careful about taking on more than you can handle. Exercise all the caution you have learnt through life, whether it is interesting to do so, or not. Finances will be average. Health will benefit hugely from care in diet and mindfulness practices. TAURUS (April 21st-May 20th): May will be such that you will have seen better days. But your past experiences through life will come of great use now, and you will find that you have dealt with everything on your plate by the end of the month. Handle expenses well, as there will be more than usual of that. Health will benefit from good diet and regular exercises. GEMINI (May 21st-June 20th): May will be challenging at all levels. However, you have one very powerful resource for yourself, which is the formidable array of people you know. Take steps with advice of the wiser, and with the company of the more experienced, and you will sail through. Expenses will rise towards the end of the month. Health will benefit from care in diet and regular fitness routines. CANCER (June 21st-July 21st): May will be a month full of opportunities for you. However, most will be longterm, so take everything at your own pace and do not be hurried, even if people try to convince you otherwise. Keep your opinions to yourself and pay heed to others’ opinions, instead; they

will come of use. Finances will be average. Take good care of your health, especially in the latter half of the month. LEO (July 22nd-August 22nd): May will appear to be an amenable month, but be forewarned, it is deceptive. However, you will fare well enough, with no harm done, especially if you can take advice of seniors and adapt them to your situations. The latter half of the month will tend to be rather eventful. Finances will be average. Health will be fairly good. VIRGO (August 23rd-September 22nd): May will give you more in retrospect, so hold off expectations as you live through the month. Make all effort to remain calm and uncritical as you observe situations, as this will pass. The end of the month will be better than the beginning. Finances will be indifferent. Health will benefit from walks in nature and gentle physical activities. LIBRA

(September 23rd-October 22nd):

May will surprise you. However, this is more of a month of staying on the predictable and familiar path, than trying to counter surprises with few of your own. Trust your and others’ experiences from the past to show you wisdom for your future. Finances will be variable, but not a cause for worry. Health will benefit from conscientious care. SCORPIO

(October 23rd November 22nd):

May will seem rather unpredictable. If you do need to think things over, be alert that you don’t overthink. Eventually,

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st): May will be unusual for you, and for a fleeting moment, you may feel a lack of grip on situations. However, you will land on your feet and all will be well. Do keep in mind that there are many things possible on earth, and certainly more than what any one person can know. Expenses may increase. Look after your health. CAPRICORN (December 22nd–January 19th): May will be a challenging month for you, and you deal fairly with challenges. Do allow for leeway. Do be patient. Do take advice from those you respect. Do move ahead step by step, with due diligence! Finances will be as usual. Health will benefit from care with diet and mindfulness practices. AQUARIUS (January 20th–February 18th): May will be a month for you to feel more sure of yourself than situations would warrant. Go ahead and rely on yourself and on your past experiences, especially, to guide you forward. There will be increased expenditure towards the end of the month. Health will be fairly stable, though do look after your diet. PISCES (February 19th-March 20th): May is a time for you to turn inwards and trust your soul to guide you. Your nature is better equipped to handle the current month, than all the wisdom that people can teach you. Finances will be fair. Health will benefit from practising mindfulness.
