YOUTH CLUB NEEDS A HOME! The manager of Woodbridge’s only youth club, Just42, has been hunting high and low for a temporary base. Caroline Rutherford and her team were left in “enormous shock” after Suffolk County Council recently announced it was closing down the wooden-framed seventies building, near Kingston Playing Field, due to decay. As from the end of August no more groups, including the Christian charity’s youth club which has met on Monday nights for at least a decade, will use the hall as the building is due to be demolished. Suffolk County Council insists the site won’t be

disposed of for a year to “fully explore other community opportunities.” “We’ve been desperately looking,” says Caroline. “I’m hoping we’ve found a temporary alternative and might know more by the end of July, so people should check our Facebook page for more details. My dream would be to one day have a new youth club with office space and storage for our sports and games equipment rebuilt on that existing site as it’s in the ideal location.” ● To find out more or offer your support, visit facebook.com/Just42Ltd or call 01394 3809920

Three local restaurants have joined forces with Alchemy Wines to bring out their very own wine. The Table in Woodbridge, the Ufford Crown and the Turks Head in Hasketon are in partnership with the Ipswich-based wine company to launch their lovely new white wine, the Quartet Sauvignon Blanc. The Suffolk Quartet, as they are jointly known, reveal their tipple will feature on the wine lists at all three establishments. Vernon Blackmore, owner of The Table, says choosing the wine was a tough job – but someone had to do it. “Alchemy Wines organised many vineyard visits and tastings before we all agreed on this delicious white from the south west of France!” he Pictured above: Vernon Blackmore says. “Our hope is this will be the first of many affordable wines from interesting vineyards available only under our Quartet brand.” To celebrate the launch of this unique venture a progressive supper is planned for 29th September from 6.30pm. Guests will enjoy a three course meal and a glass of quartet at each eaterie, moving between the restaurants after each course. Transport is provided and tickets are available at £40 a head. To reserve a space contact either of the restaurants.

UPMARKET HILL! Are you tired of the same old sales service from estate agents – the one-size-fits-all approach which never quite captures your home’s unique charm? Cornerstone Residential on Market Hill has just launched its new line of Bespoke properties for homes that demand just a little bit more. The service celebrates properties which stand out from the crowd and ooze wow factor! Founder David Farrow, who has worked in the

property industry for 15 years, says: “Many of our home-buyers are looking for that ‘stand out’ property. That may be a grand period home, or a quaint cottage with exclusively designed interiors, or a host of other styles in between. This is where Bespoke comes in.” “We are delighted that our business values are striking a chord with clients,” he adds. “Our principles are integrity,

dedication and local knowledge, without the pressurised sales and excessive fees. Our sales confirm this approach is working. Bespoke is all about our team working closely with clients to truly understand the eclectic qualities they love about their own home. It’s this knowledge that sets the service apart.” ● For more details call Cornerstone Residential on 01394 547000.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER!

Pictured left: The Black swan on the Deben

Fans of Woodbridge’s famous black swan have been flocking to the River Deben to catch a glimpse of the unusual bird. According to Matt Parrott, district experience manager at RSPB Minsmere, the swan is almost certainly a runaway. ““They’re native to Australia but this one probably is an escapee from a British zoo or a wildlife park. They usually have their wings clipped but if they don’t have it done regularly they can escape. They look all black but they actually have white feathers underneath. They don’t breed with wild swans even though they eat the same food and are found in the same areas. Escapees are common. We once had a pink flamingo stay at Minsmere having escaped from Marwell Zoo in Hampshire. “The last time she was spotted she was heading towards Manchester Airport! We like to think she flew home in style!” ● Why not visit RSPB Minsmere this summer? Go to our What’s On Guide on page 31 for more details. ISSUE ONE… SUMMER 2016

oodles of it. And yet within months of moving into the four-bed house in a leafy Woodbridge road they were talking about extending it. “Well that’s partly because we found out halfway through the build that Sarah was pregnant,” smiles Harvey, who built the house himself along with the help of various trades. Their home was the inspiration of London-based architect Jerry Tate of Tate and Harmer. “He’d literally sketched the design for the house on a bit of paper while we were talking to him as he was on a train!” recalls Sarah. “He sent it through to us and we said; ‘yes!’ straight away.” They bought the original house and

plot – a three bed 1950s bungalow with large rear garden – back in 2009. After knocking it down and building their timber-framed home, the couple moved in six months later. Shortly after that Sarah gave birth to their son Fraser, who is now five. “Even though we’d built four bedrooms

“WE WANTED A QUIET SANCTUARY FOR OURSELVES” upstairs the smallest was really just a box room and the girls wanted bigger rooms,” says Sarah who has two children Imogen, 14, and Nyah, 11, from a previous relationship. “We did have a downstairs ‘snug’ that we all shared but we wanted to give the kids a space of their own and a quiet sanctuary for ourselves.” It was Jerry Tate who came up with

the idea for a Parent Pod. He designed an almost self-contained unit linked to the main house by a small corridor. Three years after building their main house, Harvey set to work on the Pod which, ironically, took longer to build. “It was a bit more complex because of the sedum roof,“ he says. “But I learnt so much and am keen to build more.” With dramatic floor to ceiling sliding doors, a bath in the centre of the room and a superbly insulated green roof above, it is is a sanctuary to be proud of. ‘‘People ask if our Parent Pod is for grandparents and we say; ‘No way, it’s for us!’ “ laughs Sarah. “Although the truth is the kids are in it more than us - we are usually in the snug with the dog!” Pictures: John Ferguson

IS GREY

THE NEW BLACK? Woodbridge Interior Designer Jojo Humes Brown on why she believes it’s more like the new magnolia …

S

o it has been a few years since the phrase ‘50 shades of grey’ hit the headlines and we all turned our attention to the new neutral colour grey….No longer my first thought being John Major in Spitting Image but now a whole world of tonal calmness. From clothing to hair it was silver tones as far as the eye could see. But to me, its main influence was in the world of interiors. It wasn’t long before every other kitchen and sofa was embracing the shade and this trend shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. And I am mighty happy with that. The main lure for me is its versatility. Anyone who has seen my work will know that I love to use colour (and pattern and texture and scale, oh and humour) but paint colours are a massive passion of mine. I love the depths and tones of so many of the greys available. The day that Little Greene launched its new colour card dedicated to this beautiful tone was a great one indeed. Showing how from steely to earthy and varying from a whisper of Cool Arbour to the moody thunderous Scree there really is something for everyone. I am a firm believer that a pale French grey really is the new magnolia, dare I say it. The main reason is that it goes with all colours, I love the sophistication of grey and a soft warm cream in a traditional property but equally a punchy orange and

slate duo in a more contemporary setting. But my absolute favourite is the marriage of any tone of grey with the Pantone colour of the year, a soft dusty rose, So eighties I hear you say? Yes but why not, you can’t reinvent the (colour) wheel so let’s revisit some of its best combos. One of my favourite tricks is to use it on interior woodwork. Architraves, doors and staircases really do benefit from this colourway, I believe, giving a balanced and refined edge. But not just destined for the interiors of our homes, we all must have noticed that dark grey has become a very

“I LOVE THE SOPHISTICATION OF GREY AND A SOFT WARM CREAM IN A TRADITIONAL PROPERTY” popular newcomer for exterior windows. Smart, slightly edgy and great mixed with brickwork and cedar toned woods … who needs to play it safe any more? Lastly I would add that the secret to its success, if you are taking the plunge, would be to add a degree of warmth to this palette, in my mind every room needs a metallic element and this is no exception. So off I go to dream of my blush velvet sofa and deep grey walls with vintage brass lighting…. Who needs to dream of Christian Grey when you have this magic?” l jojohumesbrowndesigns@gmail.com

Pictured right: Sue Hargadon will be missed by all

AHEAD OF THE TIMES! Andy Sievewright talks exclusively about taking over from Sue Hargadon at Farlingaye …

I

t’s a hard act to follow but Andy Sievewright says he’s looking forward to taking up the baton from his predecessor. The Scottish-born head teacher, who comes from Acton High School in west London, starts his high profile new role at Farlingaye in September. “Ms Hargadon has clearly done an excellent job and has obviously been supported by a great team,” he says. “There’s a positive culture of learning so there’s an enormous amount to build on and it looks like the students and staff are people that I’ll really enjoy working with.” Andy will relocate to Suffolk with his wife and two daughters over the summer holiday. “The whole family’s looking forward to the new world of Suffolk,” he says. Andy, who is known as Dr Sievewright courtesy of a PhD in American Literature, says he has no immediate plans to make any significant changes to the school.

“I don’t think they’ll be any huge changes of direction but what we will be looking to do is continue to develop students who can be successful in a complex and rapidly changing world,” he says. Andy has spent 25 years building up an illustrious career in London. Acton High School, ranked Good in 2013 by Ofsted, has recently received recognition for being one of the Top 100 non-selective state schools for sustained improvement in GCSE performance, and an SSAT Silver Award for its hard work in promoting diversity, tolerance and inclusivity. “Farlingaye is

“SHE’S CLEARLY DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB” a bit bigger than Acton,” says Andy. “Particularly because it’s got such a large sixth form. But it’s not something I’m not used to. The drive is always to ensure a great education for each and every student who comes through our doors.”

“GOODBYE AND THANK YOU! …” BY LIAM FLIN, YEAR 12 STUDENT “I was saddened to hear the news that, after a twenty-one year tenure, Ms. Hargadon would be drawing the curtain on her career and retiring at the end of the summer term. Ms. Hargadon has provided me with a host of opportunities and it’s the time she is willing to dedicate to any student in need of help or advice, despite her busy schedule, which will be missed most of all. Few teachers can ever say they make such an impact on a school, but she has injected Farlingaye with a desire to learn and succeed. Goodbye and a huge thank you from us all.”

or Vernon Blackmore the street food he ate as a child has long shaped and influenced events and dishes served up at his award-wnning brasserie, The Table. Street Food Sundays have been going strong for four years – the relaxed courtyard setting, chilled DJ music and outdoor food from around the world have proved a hit all round. “We tend to get families with children here during the earlier part of the day and then a younger crowd in the evenings,” says Vernon, who also runs foodies delight, the Anchor, as well as the hugely popular Old Mariner.

“It’s exciting times in Woodbridge at the moment, there’s a lot of crossovers of cuisines.” This is partly due to Vernon’s colourful career in the hospitality business as well as a childhood punctuated by food and travel. His mother ran the acclaimed Satis House Hotel and Restaurant in Yoxford for many years. Vernon himself brought Asian food to Woodbridge back in the nineties with his first restaurant , the Spice Bar, based in the Throughfare. “Street food played a strong part in my childhood,” he says. “I was born in Malaysia and still have relatives there so have spent many holidays visiting

Pictured clockwise from left: Vernon in his restaurant The Table. Vernon’s Street Food Sundays have proved a hit with families and young people alike

as a child and young teenager. I loved the experience of eating this food at your own pace, there was a certain freedom in it. “My favourite dishes were chicken satay on the sticks, laksa, which is a curried noodle soup and a fried rice dish called nasi goreng. I remember with the satay you didn’t have to pay until the end and they’d just count the sticks … it was tempting to throw some under the table but they were always sharp to that!” Vernon, who lived in London before settling in Suffolk, says his most popular events over the last four years have been the Thai and Malaysian

ones, along with the Spanish theme. “I was aware through both experience and talking to people in London that street food was becoming more popular as a movement. The setting of eating food outside with music, was festival-like and I felt the courtyard here was the perfect place,” he adds. Long may it continue! Pictures: John Ferguson

A CUT ABOVE! From Buckingham Palace to Woodbridge, Chapel Properties’ Mark Crisp delivers a first class building service …

I

t’s hard these days to stroll around Woodbridge without seeing Chapel Properties’ distinctive black signage boards. Founded by Mark Crisp, the catalyst for launching his own construction company came in early 2014. Woodbridge-born Mark had just been made redundant from his role as managing director of a London based interior fit-out company overseeing works on prestige projects at Buckingham Palace and Somerset House, amongst others. Two and a half years on, Chapel Properties is a thriving business and Mark freely admits he should have taken the plunge and gone out on his own years before. Thirty years in the building industry, kick started by an apprenticeship with Woodbridge builders Ingram Smith, which was later bought out by The Jackson Group, has given Mark a very clear vision as to how he wants to run his business. “We were fortunate from the outset to have the support of local development company, Chec Developments, and still undertake projects for them today, he says. “Whether we’re undertaking a new build, interior renovations or an extension, the Chapel Properties brand is based on the personal service we offer.

ISSUE ONE… SUMMER 2016

“From an initial team of three we now have 14 full-time members of staff and however much we grow, our commitment to customer service won’t change. I always take the brief for a new project, and it’s me that prepares the quotes and liaises with clients from the outset, through to final sign off and this is definitely appreciated by clients.” To date, Chapel Properties has

“I CANNOT RECOMMEND THEM ENOUGH. A GREAT TEAM AND GREAT EXPERIENCE!” VERNON LAYTON, SUFFOLK

completed over 30 projects and is currently busy working in Seckford Street, Burkitt Road and Beech Way. “A large proportion of our work comes through referrals which is always gratifying and a real testament to the quality of our work.” As a chartered construction manager, Mark knows the benefits of working with and employing an experienced team of crafts and tradesmen. “Having our own skilled team is really important and enables us to offer a consistent premium quality and level of service. Many of the team I’ve known for years and know they have the expertise required to undertake more complex

building projects involving old or listed properties, which is critical in an area such as Woodbridge and the surrounding villages.” Benefitting from a first-class apprenticeship himself, similar opportunities have been introduced at Chapel Properties. “We’ve had two apprentices join us, one a carpenter and one a bricklayer and both have been very positive experiences.” Playing an active role in the community is also important, whether that’s sponsoring and taking part in the Woodbridge 10K or supporting local retailers, “It’s important we do our bit,” adds Mark. Asked about the future, Mark quickly replies: “In a very short time we’ve developed a reputation for a premium quality service. Doing a good job and enjoying a good reputation is extremely important to me. I don’t want to become the biggest building company in Suffolk, but I do want to be known as one of the best.”

TAKE IT TO THE

‘BRIDGE! Woodbridge has seen an explosion of DJ events in coffee shops, pubs, restaurants to full-on festivals. So we asked DJ, curator and writer Ben Osborne, instrumental in the town’s musical renaissance … where did it all go so right?

W

hen I moved to Woodbridge in 2009 there were very few music events happening. I met Jules and Lex who had just opened The Cross (now the East Coast Diner) who booked me to play there a few times. It took a while to become a regular event but it was a start and once established it meant more DJs got to play in town. A watershed event was Peter Hepworth’s Festeaval, which ran at the Tea Hut in 2011 and 2012 and brought in acts such as Bastille and Beth Orton. That really helped people to start taking music seriously in the town and saw more local acts arrive on the scene. In 2012 I started hosting annual events at the Tea Hut, The Angel, outside the Shire Hall and the Community Hall. The idea was to see if Woodbridge could support a multi-venue event happening across the town. Then in 2013 we launched the Woodbridge Art and Music Event as a town-wide festival based in Elmhurst Park and seven other venues. The area around the station felt like a full on street party, with over 1000 people taking part. This enabled me to invite internationally renowned DJs and acts that I’ve worked with to play in Woodbridge - even though there wasn’t a big venue. To date they’ve included Orbital, Coldcut, The Reflex, Mental Overdrive, Justin Robertson, Mark More/ S Express, Severino/ Horse Meat Disco and cult bands, such as Polar Bear, The Woodentops, White Noise and Red Snapper. It’s funny but now when people discuss why things have changed, they often suggest there’s been a change in council policy. But I think it’s more that venues have changed with places such as The Riverside, The Anchor, The Fire Station and The Table, holding more regular DJ events. I’m not saying this is down to any one thing. It takes a lot of people to contribute and support music to make the events successful. And a large group of local music enthusiasts have tirelessly supported music.”

It’s an Aladdin’s cave of carefully-hand picked pieces which leaves you drooling with envy. Having fallen for Woodbridge during numerous family sailing trips to the area, Mandy was delighted when she first viewed the premises. “I remember walking from the shop front into a warren of loveliness,” she says. “The house just kept going on and on, with twists and turns that made us fall in love with it even more. Everyone is always surprised at how much space we have, which also includes a perfect town garden with outbuildings to house my stock.” Mandy moved from Twickenham with husband Henry and daughter Molly in 2012, throwing open the doors of the wonderfully scented Vanil, which has become one of the town’s ‘go-to’ destinations. The butcher’s block is where friends generally gravitate for a glass of wine and has been the starting point of some great get-togethers.” There is still work to be done. “We have a fantastic vaulted cellar which currently isn’t used to its full potential,”

she says. “I’d love to revamp this and use it as an extension of our pantry and a place to showcase my ceramics and collectables. “Moving to Woodbridge and opening Vanil are some of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I just can’t imagine us moving. Where could top this?” l

S

ophie epitomises the adage you should do what you love most in life. Every day she opens the doors to one of the town’s best kept beauty secrets. Tucked away just moments off the Thoroughfare, those in the know enjoy all the Gellie Hut has to offer. It’s a one stop shop for anything from gel nails, HD Brows, lashes to threading and perhaps most importantly of all, a good old chinwag “What’s said in the hut stays in the hut,” says Sophie in her elegant townhouse. “Like many women I find the whole salon experience quite daunting. The Hut is a relaxing

space where clients feel at ease without the rest of town being privy to the intricacies of their beauty regime. “After working in PR, I went back to my first love: beauty. It’s my approach and the atmosphere I’ve created that most appeals.” Pictured above: Sophie in her beauty studio

“WHAT’S SAID IN THE HUT STAYS IN THE HUT!” Pros of working from home? “I can work hours that suit me and my clients, like evenings,” adds mum-of-two Sophie. “The downside is I must always keep the house tidy!” l

He’s taken pictures in 60 different countries, covered war zones and world sporting events and photographed everyone from Michael Jackson to David Bowie. Here award-winning photographer and dad-of-two JOHN FERGUSON gives us his top tips on taking the perfect summery picture.

1

Now is an excellent time for you to produce some cool sunshine images of your little ones. When photographing children get down to their level. Crouch down or even sit on the floor – you’ll create images that will feel more connected to the child. Make it fun and don’t tire them out. If you push your child beyond the point of tiredness or boredom, you’re likely to lose them, not only at that moment but also for the next time that you want a new set of pictures.

2 Pictured above: “For this you’ll need to use your camera’s built-in flash on a manual programme” Picture: John Ferguson

3

Be different! Experiment with angles, shadows, reflections in windows or small details like little shoes or children’s hands. Or crop in tight around a child’s face. You could photograph your child whilst you look into the sun like this picture I took on the left. For this you’ll need to use your camera’s built-in flash on a manual programme, or it may even have a ‘fill-in’ setting. Give it a try, you’ll be nicely surprised!” l

MOVERS

AND SHAKERS

Cordelia Richman is Bookings Secretary for the Woodbridge Community Hall in Station Road and also manages the town’s Farmers’ Market Tell us about your roles? We all know the Community Hall is based behind the swimming pool in Woodbridge but what a lot of people don’t know is that it’s available to rent. There’s one large hall with a stage and two smaller rooms available for hire all day, every day. It’s a registered charity which provides a venue for educational, entertainment and sporting activities for the people of Woodbridge. I also manage the Woodbridge Farmers’ Market which sells delicious seasonal local produce at the Community Hall on the second and fourth Saturday morning of every month throughout the year. Sounds fun? Yes, I really enjoy both roles and feel like I’m doing something of value in the community. Any plans? I’d love one day for it to get proper funding to develop into more of a community centre and, building on the fantastic work already carried out, put the hall on the cultural map as a modern venue catering for diverse needs. When did you move to Woodbridge? 18 months ago. My husband and I left stressful

jobs in London and we’ve never looked back. Why Woodbridge? There’s something about being near the river and out in the fresh Suffolk air. If you could have one wish granted for the town, what would it be? A better mobile phone signal!

“I’D LOVE TO PUT THE HALL ON THE CULTURAL MAP AS A MODERN VENUE CATERING FOR DIVERSE NEEDS ” What makes Woodbridge special? The quality of the local food and produce is very high. Plus I love the wildlife, the river, the big skies and the architecture. Tell us a secret about yourself? My husband cuts my hair and plucks my eyebrows! He spends time on his own appearance and has loads of tools and patience, so it makes perfect sense! l For further details, go to woodbridgecommunityhall.co.uk or woodbridgefarmersmarket.co.uk Picture: John Ferguson

YEARS & COUNTING! As The Burgess Group celebrates a milestone, the company founder reflects on its soaring success

Y

ou’ll need to set aside a good hour to explore the collection of doors and windows in the Woodbridge branch of the Burgess Group. For this is no ordinary showroom. As soon as you step inside this tranquil setting, nestling on the outer rim of the sun-strewn gardens of Notcutts, be prepared to be dazzled by products which take sophistication to a whole new level. It’s not just the expertise and craftsmanship on show, it’s the warm bespoke service, the offer of fresh coffee – even the office dog, Olive, a friendly cockapoo, is a delight. Director Edward Burgess talks of his products with a pride which is borne out of years of experience and a razor sharp attention to detail. “Our showrooms offer customers the opportunity to see and feel the quality of our product range whilst providing design ideas. It is not unusual for a customer to come in with a view of ordering a traditional entrance door then being inspired by our contemporary designs that completely changes their mind.

“Our friends and family regularly compliment us on our new front door.” Mr & Mrs Lees - Felixstowe

The Burgess Group offers a range of joinery from manufacturers renowned for quality and performance.

“Many customers fall in love with some the beautiful colours we chose for the products on display and rather than standard white, opt for a soft pastel shade or perhaps vibrant finish for their windows or doors… we love seeing the transformation this makes to their homes.” Taking a tour of the showroom, it’s hard not to be impressed with not only the form but the function of each product. Front doors so solid they give a reassuring clunk when shut and sash windows that silently glide open and closed. The six metre wide sliding door operates with such ease. Homeowners might start off purchasing a new front door, boasting elegant ironmongery from the

renowned Samuel Heath. Impressed, they often end up replacing all their windows. Choosing the right windows or doors for your home is not a decision to be made lightly. So often, beautiful homes are spoilt with cheap, plastic windows that take thousands of pounds off their values. The Burgess Group’s approach is so refreshing. No hard sell, just friendly advice. Whilst interviewing Edward, a customer dropped in to say hello (his project was completed in 2002!). So is the manner of Edward that customers often pop in to the showroom to catch up. Opening their first showroom in Felixstowe in 1996, The Burgess Group soon outgrew these premises and were delighted to open a larger showroom in Notcutts, Woodbridge. From there, the company continued to expand, opening further showrooms in Bury St Edmunds and Ingatestone with plans to open in Norwich and Cambridge. In August the company celebrates 20 years of trading. “I hope people can come in and have a free birthday cupcake and a coffee with us during our birthday month.” Edward smiles. ● burgess-group.com

SOLD!

TO THE COUPLE AT THE BACK! Buying at auction might seem daunting to some but according to Goldings it’s a growing trend …

S

avvy homeowners are increasingly turning to auctions to find their des res according to Luke Golding, Director of Goldings Auctions. “We’ve seen a year-on-year increase in people from all walks of life attending our auctions and leaving with a new home,” he says. “Properties we sell are often subject to probate, tenanted investments, refurbishment projects and repossessions, as well as those built without planning permission. There are definitely gems to be found especially if you’re not afraid of a project.” However, doing your homework before bidding is crucial. “Our advice is to visit any property you’re interested in at one of three scheduled viewing sessions we host per property for untenanted properties. We host one viewing for those with tenants. Then read the legal pack thoroughly and never make any assumptions about what comes with the property. If you’re still keen to proceed, then it’s time to seek appropriate legal and financial advice.” Luke says there can be additional costs. “We charge an administration fee in order to complete a purchase,” he

says. “But other hidden costs might be contained in the legal pack and special conditions of sale. So always read the fine print.” The main thrill of the auction is that it cuts down all the endless waiting of a normal sale. Gone are the stressful phone calls to your solicitor to find out what’s happening in your property chain. “The fall of the gavel constitutes a legal binding agreement and contracts are immediately exchanged,” says Luke. “Completion of sale usually follows within 20 working days, so it all happens very quickly and there’s no going back. Ensure your finances are in place before committing to a purchase. If you’re not 100% sure, then don’t bid.”

Pictured above: This Grundisburgh lot caused a stir; corner building and plot sold on The Thoroughfare, and auction underway

“THERE ARE GEMS TO BE FOUND” In the last 12 months, two properties in The Thoroughfare were sold by Goldings at auction along with several in Woodbridge’s surrounding villages. So if you’re feeling adventurous, do your research, earmark a bargain and take the plunge! l The next auction is being hosted on September 28 at The Atrium, Wherstead Park.

“No-one messes with us!” “We were born and bred in Peckham and frankly, back in the day, we were pretty hard. We had to be with all those pit bulls about! POWER!

Nick Nicholson reckons you don’t need a fortune to transform your garden

B

ack in spring, my wife challenged me to create a cottage-style front garden in one day … for less than £80. I dug either side of the path to form two narrow borders, removing copious weeds and a self-seeded willow stump, before buying two bags of manure. This required a plan – at least a mental idea of what to choose to create the effect she desired (“no yellows or orange!”) The secret is to know when each plant is likely to flower and for how long, so that beyond summer’s sensual crescendo of colour, there are successors to take the effect into autumn and just enough structure (achieved mainly with evergreen lavender) to leave a presence during winter. I bought small, bargain perennials some as cheap as £2.50, which now take centre stage! The wife’s pleased. It cost £75 and not a hint of yellow in sight!” ● Nick leads Landscape and Garden Design at Easton & Otley College. For details of his forthcoming short gardening courses call 08000 224556. Local artist Samantha Barnes on her love affair with Woodbridge

S

ummer in Suffolk, bliss for any artist and I know this because this will be my third one. We moved here in 2013 and I remember the nationally celebrated ceramist, Clare Twomey (also from Suffolk) saying how lucky I was to be heading into all that special evening light. ‘Absolutely!’ I replied wondering what on earth that was all about. Well, now I know and boy, was she right?! The hours between 5-7pm offer something truly special in Woodbridge, a magical orange hue. My husband Carl works in telly and in filming terms they call this special light, ‘the Golden Hour’. Only here in Suffolk, we are lucky enough to have two or sometimes even three golden hours per evening. But shhhh, don’t tell anyone…

“I’VE NEVER KNOWN ANYWHERE TO BE SO PROUD OF THEIR ARTISANS AS HERE” Pictured clockwise from top: ‘A Trip To The Park’ by Samantha depicts Kingston Playing Field in Woodbridge, ‘Aldeburgh’ Canvas Painting, ‘Shingle Street’ Canvas Painting

Suffolk is brimming with artists and they are all so nice to each other. I’ve found Woodbridge to be wonderfully supportive to fellow makers and creatives, unusual to say the least in our weekly battles of living life as a self-employed artist. I’ve never known anywhere to be so proud of their artisans as here. I’ve had the equivalent to a wet fish around the chops moment several times when working with local art galleries. Why? They are just so nice and supportive of their local talents. So, take some time out to enjoy the results of all this hard graft that us artists put in day after day, week after week. Get out and go and see some, talk to them about their work and of course mention the Suffolk light and see what happens.” ● samanthabarnes.com
