ince biting the bullet and changing our name in the last issue, we’ve been delighted with the feedback we’ve received and are looking forward to sharing more tales from our beautiful region.

While we all love living close to the sea, Emma Lloyd tells us about the vital works spearheaded by The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust, to keep flooding at bay and our coastline safe.

Pinneys of Orford is renowned across the region for its delicious smoked seafood. On pages 18 and 19, Jodie Pinney shares with us a renovation project that became a labour of love: the reworking of her beloved nan’s bungalow.

With Mother’s Day falling on 22nd March, we couldn’t let this pass without notice. So on page 17, Debbie Jones tells her story about her amazing mum.

Leiston-based Karen Lear happily agreed to tell us all about her day job. On page 27, Karen explains how three years ago she retrained as a celebrant and how much she relishes her new role. While on page 21, the equally talented nutritional therapist Catherine Arnold explains the events that started her journey to becoming a health guru, and shares a seasonal recipe that’s packed full of both flavour and goodness.

T

he RSPB at Minsmere has told how EDF’s plans to build Sizewell C could threaten Suffolk Coastal’s wildlife, such as the marsh harrier – one of the country’s rarest birds.

An RSPB spokesperson says the main concerns include the impact on noise and light pollution, the ability to manage water levels at the reserve, and accelerated erosion of Minsmere’s coastline.

In a statement to Living In …, the charity says: “As highlighted in the government’s National Policy Statement for Nuclear Power Generation (EN-6), Sizewell C could have detrimental impacts on internationally and nationally important landscapes, habitats and species of the Suffolk coast and at RSPB Minsmere nature reserve. We are yet to see evidence in full which addresses all our concerns and will not be satisfied until we have been presented with this.”

CEO of Friends of the Earth, Craig Bennett, echoes the concerns claiming

that: “[Sizewell C would be] one of the biggest building sites in Europe – right next to Minsmere and within Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”

He adds that marsh harriers and other protected species would be “faced with a seven metre high causeway supporting an access road and haul road, both taking heavy traffic and permanently lit, and forming an impassable barrier (other than a paltry culvert).”

Coastal pressure group Together Against Sizewell C (TASC) is also opposed to the buildings, which would become home to two nuclear reactors. Joan Girling, secretary to TASC, says: “There are plans to build a permanent dual access road of about 4km from the B1122 Yoxford to Leiston Road directly into the site across the entirety of the Area Outstanding

Natural Beauty, thus cutting it in half with a massive loss of habitat and denying safe passage for the many species which find their home in this unspoilt marshy landscape. Light pollution will be seen for many miles around and a loss of peace and tranquillity will ensue over the 10–12 years of building work, along with increased air pollution.

“Traffic will increase on all roads with a workforce of around 6,000 to 8,000. We cannot expect to hear or see the many species which presently abide in this landscape and one can only expect that life will never be the same for people who live, work and holiday in this special area of East Suffolk. Little wonder we object.”

In a 24-hour online poll (just 34 people took part) conducted by Living In … 62% of people were against EDF’s proposals to build Sizewell C while 38% were in favour.

A statement from energy giant EDF “EDF in the UK is committed to leading the transition to a cleaner and low emission electric future, helping Britain reach net zero. We’re the UK’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, meeting around one-fifth of the country’s demand and supplying millions of customers with electricity and gas.

We believe a large amount of renewables with reliable low carbon nuclear is a good mix to give the UK a secure and affordable electricity supply.

Nuclear is a proven technology and it helps the electricity system deal better with periods with too much or too little wind or sun.

Sizewell C takes its responsibilities to the environment and local communities seriously. We have a good track record of looking after nature around our operating power station at Sizewell B and have been awarded The Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark in recognition of

conservation work on the Sizewell estate.

We have already developed Aldhurst Farm Wetland Habitat Creation scheme to mitigate the land required for Sizewell C. The 67 hectare site includes 6 hectares of wet reed habitat and extensive reedbeds and interconnecting ditch habitat and heathland.

The environmental sensitivities of the local area have been a key consideration in the development of our proposals for Sizewell C. Our ecologists have continued

to undertake environmental surveys and identify likely impacts to help inform our proposals.

We hold regular workshops with the Environment Agency, Natural England, the local planning authorities, the RSPB and the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, to look closely at how to minimise the impact of building Sizewell C on the local environment.

During Stage 4 consultation we proposed more land for wildlife, in particular the protected Marsh Harrier population that is seen at RSPB Minsmere. The latest proposals suggest three additional sites to support the marsh harrier breeding population. Two sites are also suggested to compensate for fen meadow found on the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in addition to the development of the Aldhurst Farm Wetland Habitat Creation scheme, which is already in place.”

Suffolk coastal cyclist Maurie Parish’s appeal to electric vehicle drivers to be extra vigilant ...

am not anti electric vehicles (EVs), but I do feel drivers shouldn’t transition to driving one without any thought of the implication.

I, myself, drive one of those polluting types but I am also a cyclist, so I am doing something towards reducing pollution! To those of you who are the proud owners of an EV, I thank you for doing more than me.

However, there’s a need to change the way you think and act behind the wheel of one. And this is not just from the point of view of the cyclist, but also a walker, a child, a blind person, even a horse-rider ….

As human beings, we survive by using our senses. In particular, we look and listen to ensure our own safety while using the highways.

We all know that the faster a motor vehicle goes, the more noise it will make.

Sound is an essential part of making lifesaving decisions when out, particularly for cyclists and walkers, and yet we rarely hear about the consequences of driving these silent cars.

Only recently, I was out cycling and came to a junction on a country lane in Hasketon.

Just as I was about to move I had a sudden thought: What would happen if an electric car were approaching? Would I hear it? If a vehicle arrived after I began my move, my back would be turned to it.

I reasoned that I would not know it was there, and so it would be purely down to the competency of the driver to avoid me.

I understand there is new legislation concerning audibility (in which devices are now being fitted to newly manufactured

EVs, called Acoustic Vehicle Alert Systems) but this only applies to vehicles when travelling at speeds below 12mph. This seems ridiculous, as the place where vulnerable road users are most likely to be encountered is in urban 30mph areas!

Pedestrianised areas – such as Woodbridge – would experience vehicles travelling faster than 12mph at times, and if such audibility devices turn on and off automatically, then it makes these areas inherently dangerous.

And it’s all out of our control – the competency of the driver, along with the speed and space to manoeuvre.

If the audibility speed limit on EVs was set at 30mph and below, this would better serve road safety in both rural and urban areas.

As I understand it, the legislation concerning audibility is not retrospective.

So those EVs already on the road will still be silent whether or not they are going at less than 12mph!

The failure year-on-year to cut hedges

in the countryside exacerbates the safety issue for vulnerable road users. If a car driver can’t see a cyclist ahead who, in turn, can’t hear the car coming, then it’s an accident waiting to happen.

In my view, a guidance/education plan needs to be implemented. Perhaps we even need an additional theory test introduced to drive an EV?”

New EU rules came into force last summer stating that all new fully electric vehicles must be fitted with an audible warning device to aid safety. The new ‘Regulation on the Sound Level of Motor Vehicles’ means devices will be fitted to all new EVs sold in the UK and hybrid vehicles from July 2021 onwards. Green party councillor Eamonn O’Nolan, who drives an electric car himself, says: “I can understand your correspondent’s concerns. I must admit that I was surprised that the AVA System wasn’t active on my car when I bought it.

Having said that, Maurie has raised a few points which cannot be dealt with by the car manufacturers. Visibility splays are rigidly enforced by county highways when new housing developments are built, so the electric car will be no less visible than another. The problem with hedges is one which needs to be dealt with by the same highways department, and the budget cuts which they have had to absorb have impacted on their ability to monitor these.” l Maurie is PR officer for the CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) Suffolk, www.cyclinguk.org

37,850 were purely electric – a rise of 144% on the previous year. l National charity for the blind, Guide Dogs, echoes Maurie’s safety concerns about quiet vehicles, stating on its website: “US research from 2008 found quiet vehicles travelling at low speeds cannot be heard until they are just one second away from impact with a pedestrian.”

ou might be wondering whether the time is right to appoint an attorney. Broadly, an attorney is someone (or people) nominated by you to look after you in the event that you can no longer do so yourself. So, who should you choose?

Well, you can choose anyone you like provided they are over 18 and of sound mind. If you are appointing an attorney to manage your property and financial affairs, then your attorney must not be

bankrupt. Often the decision is simple: children. But what if there are no children, or your children have their own issues to deal with, or you’re estranged?

Ideally your attorney should know you well. Ultimately, they must act in your best interests and no one knows what’s in your best interests better than you.

So, the question your attorney should be asking themselves is: what would you have done had you been asked to make that decision? It helps if there’s an established relationship, but it isn’t essential.

Your attorney should always act with integrity and empathy. It might help if they have professional experience and contacts who can help out if necessary. For example, if your financial circumstances

rtist Nick Nicholson, who has two coastal exhibitions coming up this year, is offering a unique service to home owners and businesses: capturing the exterior of their building.

“People love immortalising their places like this, and they make for great presents,” he says.

This is one of a number of offshoots Nick offers as an artist. He’s known for his innovative style using a range of unconventional techniques which result in dramatic and eye-catching paintings.

“People are often surprised when they realise my work is water-colour based,” he says. “I tend to use deeper tones than usual and add different things to my paintings; for example, I work with bits of stick, feathers, candle wax, hair combs and also use inks, gesso (which is a bit like plaster of Paris) and a thick paint called gouache.”

He offers one-to-one watercolour lessons to residents in the Coastal area. “Some people prefer to learn in the comfort of their own homes,” says Nick, who is also a DBS-checked, fully qualified teacher. “My teaching style is more intuitive than the conventional way of going through boring textbook exercises; I p refer my clients to learn as they paint. It’s far more exciting to achieve something in every lesson. Clients have told me it’s the one time in their week when they can really switch off from the hustle and bustle of their lives and get into a creative space. It’s as powerful as meditation.”

This is a busy year for Nick, as he will be exhibiting his work in May at The Aldeburgh Gallery, then later in August at Artspace in Woodbridge.

With many parts of the UK suffering severe flooding last year, Emma Lloyd of business consultancy We Are Relish appeals for support to keep our local coastline safe

ur treasured Alde and Ore Estuary stretches 44km along the Suffolk coast from Aldeburgh, down to Orford and along to Boyton. The landscape is in extreme peril from more frequent and powerful storm and tidal surges, and without urgent work on the estuary walls, this beautiful area is at serious risk of flooding.

With an estimated 300,000 visitors flocking to Aldeburgh each summer, a co-ordinated approach to upgrade and maintain the flood defences is required to sustain this area of natural beauty in Suffolk. Its existence is important not just for us to enjoy the landscape, wildlife and rivers, but to help protect the local communities, homes and businesses, as well as cultural and heritage attractions for generations to come.

Back in December 2013, The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust (AOET) was established to raise and steward the funds required to upgrade the river walls of the estuary where government funds were not available. Launching the Save Our Suffolk Estuary campaign in 2017, the AOET has to date raised over £1.2 million thanks to business and community support. This included Suffolk’s biggest pub quiz, with over 600 people competing in parallel quizzes across 12 venues in November last year. This event alone raised over £44,000, and in 2020 the charity has ambitious fundraising plans including a community bike ride for all ages and abilities along the estuary, and a golf day at Aldeburgh Golf Club.

The Alde and Ore Estuary is constrained by river walls, which enables the land behind it to be farmed even though much of it is at or below sea level in the floodplains. With rising sea levels and more frequent stormy weather, this area is increasingly vulnerable to flooding. The poor condition of much of the river wall only exacerbates this risk. Bank settlement over the years has resulted in wall heights lowering and, along many stretches, the wall’s profile is narrow and steep, making it vulnerable to breaching in a storm surge.

The East Suffolk Internal Drainage Board, which is a risk management authority in the same manner as the county council or the Environment Agency, was tasked by the AOET to take forward a scheme which will enable existing river walls to be re-profiled.

The aim of the proposed upgrade work is to

enable the estuary defences to withstand a 1-in-200-year tidal surge with climate change. This robust programme of works would result in a resilient approach, ensuring defences can resist breaching even if the water level rises over the walls (overtopping), avoiding the catastrophic flooding to low-lying homes and farmland seen in 1953 (pictured right) and more recently in 2013 (pictured below).

The work, based on scientific analysis, includes the management of important wetland habitats at a time when these environments are in decline. Species of note found within the estuary include water voles, otters, curlew, redshanks, and large numbers of overwintering birds.

The entire estuary programme of works has been costed at £26.9m. Of this, local businesses, landowners and residents are pulling together to raise £16m and make the SOS Estuary campaign a success. e recently spent an hour with Bradley Potter the owner of Potter’s Estate Agents on Market Hill. He is part of a younger generation of entrepreneurs investing in Woodbridge.

We asked Brad: “With all the changes effecting landlords, such as mortgage interest tax relief, letting fees ban, new rules on HMO’s, evictions, energy efficiency and electrical checks etc how do landlords still make a profit?”

He said: “As a tangible asset, property is still very much in demand as property investment can provide rent paid by the tenants (yield) and capital growth.

However, to maintain a profit landlords need to be prepared to change both lenders and letting agents.”

is for Margins: The average fee for an estate agent to fully manage a letting is 14.4% (Inc VAT). If the monthly rent is £900 this means £129.60 in lost charges. Upgrading to an agent with lower fees without VAT (e.g. 8.0%) reduces fees to just £72.

When do you step in and make that repair? For landlords if you can make a 4% difference that’s a third more in your pocket compounding from day one. You wouldn’t drive a car in limp mode for a year, why let your property drift into that?

You might have driven past it a hundred times or more and wondered, like us, what on earth this discreet-looking company, nestled away on the outskirts of Woodbridge, actually does.

We set out to find out and were

delighted to discover, over a nice cuppa with Brafe’s commercial director, Adam Dalby, that the business is not only a market leader, it’s a rare find in Suffolk.

Adam (pictured) explains: “We manufacture high specification alloy castings. These are mostly used for flow control of gas or liquids in a variety of different materials for global customers. Predominantly, our market is oil and gas, nuclear, environmental control and water pumping systems. Our biggest single market is North America, though we also have a lot of business in Europe including Hungary, France and Romania, along with business in Asia and the Middle East.”

From prototyping alloys through to serial volume production, it seems Brafe is quite a force in the global castings market.

Founded in 2010 by dynamic father and daughter team Chris and Joanna Brennan, their company’s story reads like something from a fairy tale. Or perhaps, more fitting, a certain Roald Dahl story! Living in Orford, Chris was keen to make the perfect naturallyleavened loaf whilst developing his skills as a baker and chocolate maker.

Along with help and encouragement from his gourmande-inspired daughter Joanna, they opened up the award-winning Pump Street Bakery in 2010. The main market square in Orford is now home to Pump Street’s chocolate shop, cafe and bakery. It was in 2012 that they started making chocolate in their pastry section with beans imported directly from single estates and cooperatives around the world.

By 2017, their chocolate-making operation had outgrown the premises and so they refurbished a disused military vehicle record-keeping building at Bentwaters Parks in Rendlesham and ISSUE ONE… SUMMER 2016

With a £10million turnover, the company grew from humble beginnings out of a Martlesham workshop 53 years ago to the slick employer-owned operation it is today. It recently had a new stateof-the-art robot arrive in the foundry to improve manual handling, process control and volume potential.

“We are Suffolk born and bred,” smiles Adam. “Our late founder, Michael Goodman was the former Mayor of Felixstowe, supplying small fittings for gas fired central heating systems.”

In the late 1970s, Adam’s father Andrew joined Brafe as a development metallurgist and, as they say, the rest is history!

With a staff of 114 – one of the largest employers in Woodbridge – ranging from fresh-faced apprentices through to technical engineers and metallurgists, Adam says they pride themselves on the breadth of skills it supports locally.

“Oscar-winning director Mat Kirkby (originally from Suffolk) mentioned our doughnuts in his acceptance speech for best live action short for The Phone Call during the LA ceremony. He’s now got free doughnuts for life,” he laughs.

The Wooden Postcard Company

Whilst running their company supplying eco-friendly items to museum shops, Guy and Nathalie Robson stumbled across vintage wooden prints on a French market stall and an idea was born. Soon they were adapting it: screen-printing by hand, their first coloured wooden postcards.

This rather novel take on the traditional postcard – in fact, a cross between a card and a gift – was so well received that they decided to launch The Wooden Postcard Company back in 2012. “Wooden postcards are eco-friendly” says Nathalie, “as they actually use less wood and chemicals than paper ones.”

Fast forward seven years and the company is now the foremost specialist wood printers in the UK, with full in-house services offered from its manufacture and studio base near Aldeburgh. Their beautiful postcards and wooden wall art are a hit with independent stores and museum shops across the UK, Europe and as far afield as Australia.

“We’ve built fantastic partnerships with museums and private collections with well-loved licences such as Wallace & Gromit and the Flower Fairies,” she says. “And we love working with independent illustrators, growing our card collections every day. We’re always looking for the next design, but our star of the moment is the very lovely ‘Birds’ collection from successful artist Matt Sewell.”

With projects for The National Gallery in London and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum forthcoming, it looks like 2020 will be an exciting year. “We thrive on our clients’ satisfaction and put the same care into producing postcards, fine art prints for a museum, interior design projects, wedding invitations or indeed, a bespoke wall art of a child’s drawing,” adds Nathalie.

Inspired by the glorious Suffolk countryside, John Penwarden spends his working days making these beautiful huts at his idyllic farm just ten miles west of Southwold. John, who joined the company as production manager back in 2008, loved it so much he ended up buying the firm four years later. His shepherd huts are legendary, with bags of craftsmanship – Ickworth, the National Trust gem in Bury St Edmunds recently commissioned one for its grounds. John, who’s always got Pippa his loyal German Shepherd (but of course!) by his side, says: “It’s my dream job, as I can combine my passion for woodwork and meticulous attention to detail with being at home on the farm! Plus, it neatly fits alongside my wife Juliet’s profession as a dressage rider and coach.”

John says it usually takes him around six weeks to build a hut from scratch, depending on what the client wants. “We can fit a clever slide-away full-sized double bed, drop-leaf table, shelving and cupboards and also provide an interior decorating and soft furnishing service,” he says.

His huts have gone to clients as far afield as Perth in Scotland and he’s even holidayed in the Loire Valley in one. “That was quite an experience!” he adds.

“Our new venture across the square from our bakery in Orford, our first-ever Chocolate Shop,” he says.

“This dedicated space is a celebration of all things chocolate, I’m sure you’ll see a lot more happening in this new and exciting space.”

Has he got any nuggets of advice to other new or up-andcoming businesses about making a go of it in Suffolk?

“It’s really integral when you’re growing a business in any community that you listen to others in the area, others in your field, and listen to your customers,” he says. “Suffolk is a thriving place, especially for the ever-growing food and drink scene here.”

Family Ties Jodie Pinney brings 21st century living to her grandmother’s Orford bungalow

W

hen you say the surname Pinney in these parts, you think of the Orfordbased family business and its delicious smoked salmon and oysters. However, since the birth of her son, Jodie Pinney has taken some time out from the fish business and found a new string to her bow – house renovation.

She explains: “Nana sadly died in 2012 and left me her bungalow, The Dunns, on Gedgrave Road in Orford. It’s a place I’ve known all my life.

“I didn’t do anything with it for ages, but when I had Otis I reduced my role in the business – although I still see Mum and Dad most days, so I’m always up to date with what’s going on. That gave me the time to firstly renovate Curious Oyster – the studio at the back of the property that Nana had built for her German relations to use when visiting – and

then the main bungalow.

“Nana was originally from Aschberg near Stuttgart. Her brother had been a POW and was based near Fressingfield. The people he worked for needed an au pair and so Matilde, my nana, came to live and work in Suffolk.”

Jodie’s grandparents met when her grandfather and founder of the smokery, Richard, came to Suffolk in search of a quieter life. Proudly, she says: “During World War II, Grandad worked in London, fundraising for the Duke of Gloucester’s Red Cross and St John Appeal and helped raise an amazing £53 million, mainly through daily lunch-hour concerts in the city, which involved all the leading musicians of the day.

“In 1959, Richard and Matilde started to experiment with smoking fish and growing oysters, and soon after they opened the Butley Orford Oysterage on Market Hill, Orford.

In those days there were lots of Benjamin Britten concerts at the church and people attending the concerts started to buy their fish and oysters. It wasn’t long before Grandad was buying Irish wild salmon to smoke, which became an instant hit (later, he even wrote a book called Smoked Salmon and

Oysters). Then they opened the restaurant in the mid-60s.”

With the successful renovation of Curious Oyster giving Jodie the confidence to tackle the bigger bungalow project, she says: “We took the house right back to a shell, reworking the layout and adding an extension. While I’d undertaken the studio project pretty much by myself, it was great to work with stylist Kay Prestney from Kinship Creative. She was a great sounding board and helped me visualise the end result I was looking for.”

Building works started in November 2018 and The Dunns was available to let from the first week of June 2019. “We took bookings before it was complete, which was great, but meant we really had to stick to our deadline.”

The Dunns is now a stunning light-filled property sleeping four, with a Scandi look and feel throughout. Jodie says: “I wanted to keep the design clean and simple but was aware everything needed to be child and dog-friendly.”

With views from the bedroom window looking out over the river, and the castle standing proud at the back of the house, Jodie knew the property would work well as a

Nana at The Dunns in the early 1990s holiday let. “I purposely kept away from a nautical look, but there is a nod to our location with the dark marine blue in the kitchen and some of the art around the house. The project also enabled me to support some of the great independent shops we’re lucky to have in the area.

“The opportunity to undertake two renovation projects has been amazing, but I’m not really interested in buying properties simply to do up and sell. The Dunns has a special place in my heart and for me is a one-off.”

With this striking property almost fully booked for 2020, Jodie already has other plans bubbling away. “I’ve always loved engaging with people and hospitality, so I’m working up some ideas for a glamping site, perhaps with cabins or pods. My husband Craig and I went travelling for a year and there are lots of special touches we enjoyed that I’ve mentally filed away to use one day.”

Always happy to be making and creating things, Jodie says: “I think I get my love of making things from my nana. You’d always find her in the front room with a tapestry on the go. She used to make kneelers for the church, and she must have

made at least 50.”

Recently developing a passion for origami, she continues: “We visit our relatives in Germany every year, and one evening my aunty, Gudrun, was making these stunning origami creations. Over a glass of wine, she showed me how to do it, and I’ve now got the bug.

“I wanted to keep the design clean and simple, but was also very aware everything needed to be child and dog-friendly” “What’s great is that everyone seems to love my origami stars and so at Christmas I did a couple of workshops at Vanil in Woodbridge, which were great fun.”

Currently living in Woodbridge with Craig and their son Otis, Jodie admits Orford is pulling on her heartstrings. “Spending so much time here during the renovations has reignited my love of the place.

pring is not quite in the air, thanks to that unforgiving east wind, but I love those razorsharp and sunny crisp Suffolk days, which bring to mind my Rainbow Red Cabbage Slaw.

The star of the show is my all-round favourite: cabbage. This is, quite literally, super food. It’s also full of phytochemicals, which are the plant’s in-built protection system – eating it protects us as well from chronic disease such as cancer and heart disease. In fact eating a wide variety of rainbow-coloured veg helps create a diverse ecosystem of bacteria in the gut that not only optimises digestion but also supports immune function too.

This dish has proven very popular with my clients because it’s so versatile – it goes with everything from a steak to a curry. I often have it to accompany my eggs at breakfast too! Below is only a guide to which vegetables you may want to use; basically you can use most veg, so it’s a great way to use up bits in the fridge that might otherwise get thrown away! I always have a red cabbage and carrot base but add in whatever you like!”

ABOUT CATHERINE …

Catherine enjoyed a successful career in television as a director and producer of documentaries before a life-changing event sent her on a new path. In 2007 her husband, Paul, was rushed to hospital after blood tests revealed he had leukaemia; he was just 34.

“We discovered he faced four months of chemotherapy and two years of maintenance medication,” says Catherine, who works between Suffolk and London. “I wanted to do something to help to complement the conventional treatment, so I sought advice from a nutritional therapist.

With her help, I changed Paul’s diet, removing sugar and dairy, reducing his meat intake and increasing plant-based foods. I discovered that cancer cells have more receptors for glucose (sugar) than any other cell, they thrive on it, and they also thrive in a body that is fuelled with acidic foods such as dairy, meat and junk food.

“I went to lectures by Jane Plant, a scientist who also changed her diet after getting breast cancer; she advocated a dairy-free diet and explained how dairy was a cancer ‘accelerator.’ I was completely fascinated by this new knowledge and spent all my time reading and finding out more.

“I embarked on a cooking marathon, preparing Paul’s food at home and delivering it to his hospital bed every day, for the duration of his treatment. Thankfully, Paul sailed through his chemotherapy, and this year celebrates 11 years in remission.” The couple have since had two children, despite being told the chances of conception were slim. After qualifying as a nutritional therapist, she is now a practising functional medicine therapist too.

“My approach is to educate and empower my clients to take charge of their health, and I am constantly amazed at the results,” she smiles.

Clampdown on Suffolk’s dodgy dog breeders

recent report by the Dogs Trust has revealed that more than one in ten puppy buyers in the East of England suspect they were lied to by the breeder/seller.

After polling 2,000 puppy owners, the shocking statistics reveal that nearly half of puppy buyers were not allowed to see the pup more than once, while two-fifths

One puppy buyer said: “We went to see one breeder and were kept at the door; they’d only let us see the pups in the back garden.

Our alarm bells went off when we saw all the dog mess and broken play equipment everywhere – it was filthy. The breeder came across as highly plausible but we later discovered there were many more dogs being kept in cages inside.”

Almost a fifth of puppy buyers polled said within their first year their pup had developed significant health or behaviour problems, such as diarrhoea and anxiety, causing terrible suffering for their beloved pet while costing them on average almost £500 in additional vet bills. Some even said their pet had either died or had to be put to sleep, due to the severity of their condition.

As part of its ‘Don’t Be Dogfished’ campaign, the Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity which cares for 15,000 dogs across its network of 20 rehoming centres, is also warning dog lovers about puppy smuggling, which has become a big problem in the UK. If you have any doubts about a dog breeder/seller, the charity suggests you report them to the Trading Standards team. “My name is Gryff and you might not have seen a dog like me before – I’m a Spanish griffon, traditionally used to hunt boar in Spain.

I’m three years old and came to live with Mum and Dad, Sam and Mike, in Ufford near Woodbridge, last year. They’d heard about this charity, Adopt a Griffon, and brought me over from Galicia in June, via bus and then the Eurostar, as a young friend for their family mutt, Scout. Sadly, we lost my dear pal to pneumonia at the end of last year.

We griffons make for great family pets; we are extremely affectionate, submissive and obedient. Plus, we come in a variety of sizes, from large, like me (I’m a mixed breed, some believe part German Shepherd) to medium and small.

I really hit the jackpot when I left my Spanish dog pound for the last time and came to Suffolk, as I just love my country walks.

Griffons are great with other dogs and also very good with children – like I am with James, the 12-year-old boy in our family pack. I can be very sensitive if I’m not being treated as a proper family member though!

Leiston celebrant Karen Lear explains what appeals about the career she took up just three years ago

“

T

he idea of becoming a celebrant first came to me when I owned my floristry shop in Leiston.

People would come in to select flowers for a funeral, and I’d always be having these big conversations about what the person was like, and chatting to find out more about the arrangements they’d really like, rather than what was traditionally expected.

“I had to turn to Google Translate as the whole service was in Italian!”

Three years ago, the lease on my shop was coming to an end, and sadly in the same year I went to a dozen funerals. Attending so many services made me realise how anonymous a funeral can be, with the eulogy often being the only bit that’s relevant to the person who’s died.

And then my dear dad died. For his service we wanted a celebrant, and again it dawned on me how important that chance to talk everything through really is, along with the opportunity to have a service that truly reflects the person and their wishes.

Closing the doors on my floristry shop gave me the chance to embark

on my new career. And so I found myself heading off to Salisbury to take two celebrant courses: one for weddings and, for me more importantly, one for funerals.

This job pulls on all your communication skills. It’s vital you’re able to engage with people of all walks of life, as you’re dealing with those at their most happy, in the case of a wedding, and those at their lowest ebb if it’s a bereavement.

At a funeral, people can be fragile, angry and distressed, but they’re always keen to have a service that includes those things that are personal and matter to them.

Sometimes my involvement is a brief ten minutes, but in other situations I’m participating throughout the half-hour slot allotted at the crematorium. It’s always down to the family and what they’d like me to do.

I’m unable to officiate in religious buildings, but as I believe in all the gods, I’m always happy to include religious references if that’s what’s been requested.

A lot of what I’m able to offer isn’t on the day of the service, but beforehand, when I meet and spend time with the family, listening to tales of their loved one. It’s from this meeting that I formulate my service, and as I’m a natural

communicator and love writing, it’s the perfect job for me.

Invariably, music plays a big role in the funeral services I take.

A service that comes to mind was a funeral I officiated at for a lady whose passion was to watch detective films and programmes.

Her love of these shows became central to the whole service, along with theme tunes and music from her favourite whodunnits.

While I haven’t done as many weddings as I would like, a couple do spring to mind. I was invited to be the celebrant at a wedding at The Electric cinema in Southwold, which was fabulous. We were all on the stage and then the organist came up through the middle. For another wedding, I had to turn to Google Translate as the whole service was conducted in Italian!

I still do my floristry and, on occasion, act as both the celebrant and florist for the same service.

The word celebrant speaks for itself – it’s a celebration, whether that’s of two people embarking on a new life together or honouring the life of a loved one.

movie mania Having expanded across Suffolk, with 17 venues taking part in last October’s Film Feast Festival and its first London event, movie buffs don’t have to wait until this October’s festival to get their fill of fab cinema.

Festival director, Neil McGlone, says: “The Galley in Woodbridge is hosting a screening of Pedro Almodovar’s film Volver (pictured) on 19th March, accompanied by Spanish cuisine. Then we’re working with Glemham Hall on a screening of Downton Abbey in the spring.

We’ve also got a special 45th anniversary screening of Monty Python and The Holy Grail at Woodbridge’s Riverside Cinema on 28th April, with an appropriately eclectic Python-themed menu to complement the film.”

Kickstarter The countdown is on for Woodbridge musician Tallulah Goodtimes, who is launching a Kickstarter campaign in February, to complete Interstellar Swing – her new band’s first album.

“This body of work is an expression of my worldwide travels as a DJ,” she says. “It mixes vocal and instrumental tracks, infusing vintage samples, live instruments and uplifting songs with the energy of electronic music.

“With help in the studio from an accomplished team of musicians the songs are coming alive and sounding great – I’m so excited to get them out there.”

Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh Friday, 13th – Sunday, 15th March Young Art East Anglia is an annual art competition for Suffolk’s primary school pupils, that raises money for Cancer Research UK. Fifty-four schools have participated in the competition this year, which has as its theme, ‘A Moment in Time’.

The exhibition will see pieces by 350 pupils displayed over three days, with local Suffolk-based artist Mimi Nicholson (who has previously been featured in Living In …) selecting highly commended work from different age categories plus first, second and third placed pieces.

Exhibition opening times are: 13th March, 1pm – 5pm, 14th March, 12pm – 5pm and 15th March, 10am – 4pm.
