Presidential Thoughts By Barbara Ettredge

As a career educator, I have spent a lifetime investing in young people. So it comes naturally for me to promote our youth while promoting the Angus breed. Country music singer Brad Wolf, recently released “I Make a Difference”, a song about a teacher and what she makes, not in terms of money, but the differences she makes in the lives of her students. While everyone is not a “school” teacher, we are all “teachers”—teachers of young people — and we should all work to make a difference in the lives of our youth, who just happen to be the leaders of tomorrow. I challenge each of you to use the talents from you human toolbox and make a difference in the world of Angus, especially in the life of a young Junior Angus member. You many never know how many lives you touched, but it’s all because you cared. The American Angus Auxiliary offers individuals, both young and old, opportunities to take part in educational, promotional, and social activities and programs. Auxiliary members are working to make a difference; are you?

A Historic Tradition Returns to the Futurity The American Angus Auxiliary will once again auction a donated heifer at the 2011 All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurity. Through the years, heifers have been featured and sold to benefit the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund; the first heifer sold in 1958 and the last heifer sold in 1996. On June 19, 2011, a historic tradition returns to the Futurity in Louisville, Kentucky, with the opportunity to purchase a top-quality heifer. Ardyce and Jim O’Neill, O’Neill Angus Farm, Logan Iowa, have donated ONeills Eraline 259 (reg. no. 16717542; calved 2/25/2010) in memory of their daughter, Debra Ellen O’Neill. This impressive heifer and her dam combine the two noted O’Neill cow families, the Delias and the Eralines purchased in 1951, when O’Neill Angus Farm was founded by Jim O’Neill and his father Clinton. In addition, Eraline 259 traces almost every line in her impeccable pedigree to the “king of sires”, the incomparable Earl Marshall. Proceeds ONeills Eraline 259 Sells June 19 to benefit scholarship fund from the sale of this heifer will go toward the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund. The American Angus Auxiliary appreciates the O’Neills’ contribution and working together for the betterment of our Auxiliary. continuous support of Auxiliary activities.
