Microsoft Teams Quick Guide to Channels Teams overview What is Teams?

How to access Teams Teams is part of Microsoft Office 365. The desktop app is installed on all LSTM PCs. There is also a link to the specific Team on each module homepage:

When you log in to Teams, you will see your ‘dashboard’ page. This displays all Teams you are a member of as tiles. A Team is a collection of people, conversations, files and tools – all in on place. You should see a Team tile relating to the module (e.g. DLTROP203) –this is your Team for that module.

Click on the tile to enter that particular Team:

Channels Teams are made up of channels. There is already a General channel (A) which all members of the Team will be able to see. Anything you post here will be seen by all tutors and students (B).

You can also create Private channels and allocate students to them. This is similar to grouping students in Brightspace. Anything you post within a private channel will only be seen by the members of that channel. Private channels are indicated with a padlock icon.

Create private channels To create a private channel, click on the ellipsis icon next to the Team name and select Add channel:

Next, enter the channel name (A) e.g. ‘Group A’. In the Privacy field (B), click on the drop-down arrow and select ‘Private – Accessible only to a specific group of people within the team’. Then click the Next button.

You will now have the option to allocate students to the private channel. You can do this by typing student names in the search box (A) and clicking Add when you’re done.

If you want to allocate students at a later time, just click the Skip button (B).

Adding students to private channels If you decided to skip adding students during the creation of the channel, you can easily add them later.

Click on the ellipsis icon next to the private channel then select Add members.

You’ll then see the same screen as above and can search for students to add them.

Late-coming students If students join the course after it has already started, they will have to be manually added to the DLTROP203 Team.

We have provided a link in Brightspace for students, when they click this link a ‘join request’ email will be sent to tutors. Just simply accept the request and the student will be added to the Team. You will still have to then add them to a private channel.

You can also view any pending requests in Teams by clicking on the ellipsis icon next to the Team name and selecting Manage team (A). Then click the Pending Requests tab (B):
