MEN AND WOMEN WHO BUILT LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL
Dr Alec Ellis has been a regular contributor to Cathedral Life, writing articles featured in several issues dating back to 2009. The series written by Dr Alec Ellis have reflected on the history of people involved in the building of Liverpool Cathedral; the Earle and Langton families, Thomas Bartlett, Sir Robert Rankin and Adelaide Watt to name a few. All of the articles written by Alec have been collated into one book which, appropriately, is entitled ‘Men

And Women Who Built Liverpool Cathedral’. All proceeds from sales of the book will be allotted to the Cathedral’s Building Fund. Alec said “I am hoping the book will be of general appeal to anyone who is interested in the history of the people who made the building of our great Cathedral possible.” “I am grateful to the Rt Revd Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield and former Dean of Liverpool, for his encouragement. So too, the Revd Stuart Haynes, Director of Communications, and Sarah Doyle and Michelle Evans for their encouragement and technical support. A TIME TO REJOICE AND REFLECT
As we approach the end of the year with the wonderful seasons of Advent and Christmas, we are offered a moment to take stock and reflect, in our own lives and in the life of the Cathedral. This year we have said farewell to Dean Pete and Cathy as they moved to Sheffield with our good wishes and our prayers. As I took up the role of Acting Dean I felt huge gratitude for the vigorous life and vitality of the Cathedral, and not least for my excellent colleagues and the dedicated staff and volunteers who make the cathedral such a vibrant place to be. We said goodbye to our Director of Music, David Poulter. We wish him well in the next chapter of his career after the significant
contribution he has made to the musical life of the Cathedral, and we look forward to welcoming Lee Ward who joins us during Advent as the Cathedral’s new Director of Music. As we start our journey through Advent to Christmas. We are delighted to welcome back Canon Paul Rattigan following a productive four months of study leave - you can read the details on page 22. This issue of Cathedral Life reflects what is happening this year. We highlight all our Advent and Christmas services and events, a time when our Cathedral is at its best. We know we can expect large congregations who join us to experience fine worship. We are delighted to welcome so many friends for the huge variety of carol concerts and seasonal events. Please take time to see what’s on offer as you plan your Cathedral Christmas with us. Not only at Advent and Christmas but all through the year the Cathedral is a busy place, and this is reflected in Cathedral Life. This doesn’t stop as we await the appointment of the next Dean. We continue to be a place which is open to the people of Merseyside and beyond, welcoming all who come through our doors. I continue to be thankful to serve in this place and for this time as Acting Dean. I am grateful for your good wishes and support, not least during my recent time of bereavement. THE JOB THAT I’D DREAMT ABOUT SINCE I WAS A BOY We spoke to Lee Ward in his first interview as new Director of Music at Liverpool Cathedral . Lee was born in Childwall, a former pupil of the Blue Coat School, and was appointed as Assistant Organist at Chester Cathedral at the age of eighteen before attending the Royal College of Music, London and has served at the Temple Church, St. Paul's Cathedral and also at St. Alban's Abbey. He has been a teacher most of his working life, mainly at the London Oratory School, becoming Director of Music in 1996. For the last six years Lee has been in Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of the biggest cities in the world with a metro population of 21 million. “An extraordinarily vast place with such vibrancy and the people really know how to enjoy themselves! The climate is great so it’s been a bit of a shock coming back to the wind and the rain here! I have learnt a lot about Brazilian music, it’s a very musical place. I had every intention of staying in Brazil longer, however, when the job came up here I decided to take this last chance to apply for it so I did, not believing for one moment that I’d be appointed!” We asked how he feels to become Director of Music at Liverpool Cathedral. “It’s wonderful. A job that I’d dreamt about since I was a boy. I’d never really thought that I would end up being here, it’s a dream come true really. I’m very excited, if a little apprehensive, ahead 6
of the upcoming choir tour of the USA; there is lots of new music to prepare with a choir that I don’t yet know very well! I’m trying to learn everybody’s names and get used to the sound the girls and boys make.” What are his initial impressions of his return to Liverpool Cathedral? “It’s much livelier than when I lived in Liverpool many years ago. It’s very friendly – people have been so welcoming, smiley and wonderful really. There’s clearly so much going on here, it’s very much a contemporary place to be.” What is he most looking forward to? “The daily routine of worship and also collaborating with the Cathedral staff, who are tremendous. I’m looking forward to introducing some new initiatives. I’d like to involve the choir in doing a bit more of our already excellent outreach work, both in schools and in the community, and I'd also like to introduce some commercial work. With my London choir, we performed on a number of film and TV scores which really fired up the imagination of the children. I’d like to explore the possibilities of that sort of work here. I would also like to invite a number of other choirs from the UK and abroad to sing with us here. As the Director of Music I’d like to bring a more holistic approach to music within the Cathedral, exploring how we can perhaps involve the Persian community and Zone 2.”

CELEBRATE THE
Gift of Christmas Specially commissioned, ‘Hurry to Bethlehem’ is Liverpool Cathedral’s new musical interpretation of the traditional nativity story. Created by Stephen Mannings, Assistant Choral Director, its debut performance is on November 25th at 3pm. Stephen said: “This is the first time we’ve done anything like this. We’ve written everything from the score to producing a script and prop list from scratch. I came up with the idea after trying to pull together music from all different genres to fit our nativity production. It was a huge amount of work going from one resource to another and we couldn’t find what we wanted. It just seemed easier to write our own. As far as I know we are the only cathedral to do this.”
Rehearsals are already underway and our Cathedral Junior Choir - pupils from schools right across the area aged six to 14 years, will take to the stage when the production gets its first public airing. But ‘Hurry to Bethlehem’ is not only for the talent at our Cathedral to perform, Stephen has developed a full musical resource for schools and young peoples’ groups. The CD has already been recorded with Jon Lawton at Crosstown Studios and features the voices of members of the Cathedral Junior Choir. All the tracks were composed by Stephen. The resource pack will be available soon from the Cathedral Shop and proceeds from the purchase will go towards supporting the Cathedral’s work. Stephen said: “It’s been a brilliant project to work on and it is going to be so exciting to see other places take up the resources which will bring the traditional nativity story to life but in a way contemporary audiences can relate to. CATHEDRAL MAKING THE HEADLINES
Canon Paul Rattigan may not have been around the cathedral during the last four months but he’s been far from idle. Here he explains what he has been doing during his study leave. Throughout this year cathedrals have been making the headlines for all the right reasons. Mainly it’s been about growing attendance at services but cathedrals have had more visitors and more impact in their local community. So I set out to look behind the headlines. I wanted to find out what was going on, see if I could learn something and obtain good ideas for Liverpool Cathedral. Earlier this year I sent a survey around all cathedrals to get a feel for where some of this growth was taking place. Then I visited ten 22
cathedrals to ask deeper questions and see what was happening. I travelled as far north as Durham, south to St Albans, west to Worcester and east to Norwich. I visited a variety of different types of cathedral, large, small, parish, medieval, large city, small city, those that saw lots of visitors and those that saw few. All were overwhelming in their hospitality to me. They were honest as to where they were growing and where they struggled. I gained a clear picture that cathedrals are exciting places to work primarily because God’s Spirit was at work. I am pleased to report that not one of the ten I visited was declining. There was not uniform growth across all services but they were seeing more people coming to worship and more seeking to follow Jesus. I saw a subtle difference between the headline figures and the reality week to week. A clear success is the festival type services, especially Christmas. Some cathedrals have to issue tickets for certain services, whilst others repeat the service several times to satisfy demand. One cathedral does the same service six times in one day with over eight thousand people coming through the doors - pity the poor choirs that have to lead the worship! I was able to dispel some myths. Myth one - cathedrals grow at the expense of parishes. Cathedral demographics are different to parishes - more men come and the average age is lower. Cathedrals seem to be connecting with people who aren’t linked to a parish. Myth two - people coming are not spiritually hungry. Research in 2014 showed that those attending would be disappointed if they weren’t challenged spiritually. Why then has there not
been a similar explosion in week by week services?. The latter has grown but not on the scale of the one-off services. My studies suggest we need to be more creative. There is no single answer but offering a variety of discipleship opportunities help people recognise they can achieve spiritual growth in themselves by being part of a worshipping, discipling community. Myth three - people only come to cathedrals to be anonymous. Recent research shows this is not the case. People want to be known and get involved but this may not be in the cathedral but closer to their home or work. I have returned even more excited about our cathedral’s mission and ministry possibilities. 2018 will see me try out different ideas. Some will work and others won’t. That is great
because Liverpool Cathedral is “a safe place to do risky things in Christ’s service”! Maybe you are one of our regulars. My challenge to you is how are you growing in your spiritual journey and who could you invite to be part of our seeking and finding? Maybe you occasionally attend one of our big services? My challenge to you is why not find out more about our worship, community, service, or discipleship. Maybe you view us from afar? 2024 CAMPAIGN REACHES £7.25 MILLION We have been asking for your help to raise £24 million of urgent funds by 2024 to restore and develop the Cathedral, in terms of outreach, financial health and our fabric.
