PUOWAINA, O`ahu

Just as the sun peaks over Tantalus on the weekend of Memorial Day, troops of scouts eagerly await their ration of American flags and lei; tasked with the responsibility of adorning each grave with this simple yet poignant reminder of the sacrifice of our countries service members and their families

Even before that day, volunteers gather across O`ahu to sew the lei (Hawaiian floral garland) that will adorn the 38,000+ graves across the islands veterans cemeteries But why is this significant to Kapilina Beach Homes?

Each year, dozens of volunteers from the City & County of Honolulu, converge on this quaint Iroquois Point community to pluck plumeria flower from it’s trees Kapilina proudly serves as the largest venue for this initiative Following, flowers are distribute to lei sewing workshops like the one held at Kapilina on Friday, May 24th (see the announcement on page 12) Additional details of the City’s program is shared at it’s Sew a Lei for Memorial Day website

So the next time you smell the sweet fragrance of a plumeria flower at Kapilina, think of the many hands that gather annually to pay tribute to America’s heroes
