In the life of creation, I got caught by the Grand Canal. Somewhere from the unseen, I received a task to fulfill. To inherit and to promote the national history along with the culture of tradition, so was what she had granted, the great task for me to accomplish. Dance drama <<Meet the Grand Canal>>is the most complicated and difficult piece I have ever created. The topic was chosen three years ago while the Canal was applying for the World Heritage. After three years of creation work, a feeling appears to me that, the closer I approach to her, the more difficult I got to know about her. The toughest part was, no one can display the canal of thousands-year history. During my creation, I came to understand that the canal was unlike the scenery of Jiang Nan’s stream and little bridge. Even though she doesn’t possess the bursting and raging of the Yellow River, an infinite power within her maintains the circle of life…… Such a piece of particular significance should be more a cultural event rather than just a dance drama: This is the common will and shared action from the people nationwide. This is an extraction, display and expression of the cultural heritage of Chinese Canals.

Dance
drama <<Meet the Grand Canal>>is a piece of creative artwork made by Hangzhou Song & Dance Theater, collecting efforts from diverse fields of the society. It is a synthetic extraction, presentation and expression of the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal of China. This piece withdraws some modern elements of expressions, performance art and dramatic expression are combined here with the vocabulary of dancing. By combining tradition and modernity, history and future, nature and the big love, this drama shows its boldness in creativity of both content and form of art. Dance drama <<Meet the Grand Canal>>is a collective work of creative artists and culture preservers from different social regions, cultural identities as a homage to human civilization. It reveals not only the historical aspect of the Grand Canal, but also fiercely expresses the judgments and thoughts towards a truthful and complete destiny of cultural reality of heritage: The value of culture heritage lies in its essence of being accomplished by people and the nature together.
It
has been six years since the 2008 Olympic Games; the production team returns again carrying the burden of the nation to complete the mission of history, to claim to the world the determination of Chinese people to protect the canal.

According to the theme, two clues were set up. One is about the artists who tracked down the history of the Grand Canal; The other is the thousands-of-years history context of the Grand Canal, a storyline sequenced in “excavation, prosperity, forgotten, nirvana (rebirth) and meet the Grand Canal again”. The two storyline weaving together, making it possible for the audience to examine this canal of thousands of years, and to experience the wisdom and the culture the people of the canal had created. The leading actor is an artist from the creation team of <<Meet the Grand Canal>> he represents modernity; The leading actress is a drop of water, she represents the history of the canal. The drop of water will show us the tour of the rise and fall of the canal along with the riverbank economy, politics and culture. While presenting the history of thousands of years of “excavation, prosperity, forgotten, nirvana (rebirth) and meet the GrandCanal again”, the drama also tells the story of a pair of lovers from their encounter to their love and finally their breaking off, their love also representsthe affection towards the canal, culture and history.

creative in art but also considering the fact that the canal is a world heritage, it should deserve to be expressed with world-class music. As a result, the reputable composer Mr. Klaus Badelt was invited in the creation team, what the director wanted was different view angles from the west for examination and interpretation of the canal, so the piece could speak with a world tongue.

he performance is a system project of mixed arts. The system begins with the entering to the theatre of the audience seeing the documentary in looping mode and the significant bottle of water, and ends with the interactive action the audience participate. <<Meet the Grand Canal>>utilizes new forms of art in stage performance. The director made a huge breakthrough during the creation by breaking the stylization of stage performance including characters, dance, language, lighting , stage art and so on.
