THE 2021 LITTLE CITY ANNUAL REPORT

After the storm, there is always a rainbow. Individually we are one drop. Together we are an ocean.

TO OUR FamILY & FRIENDS It was another year of challenges and changes as the pandemic lingered on all throughout 2021. But the response and perseverance through these ongoing challenges and changes show how valuable your partnership with Little City is. At a time when division and disagreement continue to grow, connections and bonds throughout our community remain strong in serving hundreds here each day. This 2021 Annual Report features stories of these connections . . . these little moments that you helped create that changed a life. You will read a story about our Special Olympics basketball team and how they are taking what they learn on the court and applying it off the court. There are stories of connections between staff and students where little moments created by you are enabling breakthroughs toward success. And there is even a story from two parents sharing how their daughter’s world changed since coming to Little City. And so much more! All of these life-changing stories happened in 2021 because of you. This vibrant community that we share these connections in has always been many things to many different people. For some, it is home. For others, it has helped them find a job or develop new social skills. Regardless of what brought them to Little City, you are helping create the little moments in the lives of individuals with disabilities that’s helping them reach their unique potential. Our hope is that you know these stories . . . these connections . . . these little moments come to life because of support from partners like you. Whether it be helping renovate a new home, expand a program, or launch a new service – life-changing impact cannot happen without you. Thank you for making this community that you are such an essential part of so special for so many individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. During this time of increasing division, you make Little City a place where many come together to create a better future. With deep appreciation for your support, Shawn E. Jeffers Executive Director

Greg Burns Little City Board President

A PARENTS’ STORY: OUR DAUGHTER’S WORLD OPENED UP AT LITTLE CITY For Austin and Lisa Walsh, connecting to Little City has meant connecting to their daughter Jodi in deeper ways. Before coming to Little City in 2018, Jodi’s longest phone call with others was 30 seconds and the communication with her own parents became so shorthand because of their familiarity that there were rarely full conversations. After graduating District 214 and coming to Little City four years ago, Jodi’s world opened up and she did too, especially when coming to the residential program in 2021 where she learned to live with new people and create new routines. From discovering Special Olympics basketball to choir, Jodie has immersed herself in the programs and services you help provide all year long and she has made new friends, developed more skills, and become a social butterfly – which has greatly improved her communication. “Our good friends and family who have seen her now notice the change right away and it’s the first thing they mention,” Lisa said of her daughter’s social skills. “She would never talk on the phone and now we FaceTime 10 or 15 minutes regularly. She’s gone so long she’s had to stop herself to tell us she had to go because it was dinner time.” Austin said he credits his daughter’s growth to the environment that is supported by donors just like you. He said being around older peers, especially where she lives now, has helped her mature and learn new things where she would have otherwise not needed to adapt. Seeing those results has inspired Austin and Lisa to become dedicated volunteers of Little City. From helping with special events to regularly donating, the Walshs have found ways to help Jodi’s community be the best it can be. It is in their unique skills where they have enjoyed giving back the most. Austin is a passionate gardener who volunteers at the Dorothy Rose Horticulture Center generally two days a week to help the program in any way it needs. It also helps Jodi knowing her father is close by so often and in exploring a new hobby. “I could never even get her to hold a watering wand but somehow they got her to try working in horticulture and it worked,” Austin laughed. Lisa also has essential skills to help our vibrant community as she is a retired occupational therapist. She said while she is not always the best person to train her own daughter, she is interested in helping make improvements that can help everyone in the homes and beyond. “We wanted to support her wherever we decided to go, but Little City has made that easy,” Austin said. “She knows we’re part of the community and we know how important it is to work as a community rather than set her and her friends adrift.”

“Every single time one of my guys leaves for an adult program, it’s hard, but it’s also the goal.”

8

LITTLE MOMENTS RESULT IN BIG BREAKTHROUGHS While Blake was always outgoing, he had a hard time communicating what he wanted or needed. It was often a difficult matter of finding the confidence and skills to communicate, and that would limit his ability to grow. But that all changed when he started working with Andrew. Andrew first came to Little City as a DSP in 2019. Outside of his nine-to-five job as an engineer, he said there was something missing and he was searching for a way to give back and make a difference. While working on weekends, Andrew had opportunities to work directly with Blake, who was then a resident of Larry’s House and would stay on campus during weekends and holidays while others were away. And with homes filled with fewer residents on weekends, Andrew and Blake had more time to form a bond. While Blake was always an outgoing individual, he often struggled to communicate what he wanted or needed and this challenged him to further grow in his abilities. But as they learned more about each other’s personalities and got to know each other, Andrew was able to help Blake unlock a more independent side. It was exactly in these little moments – moments that you support through our residential programs – that helped Blake make more progress in reaching his unique potential. Their relationship blossomed as Andrew encouraged Blake’s outgoing side. Blake became more confident in asking for what he wanted or even telling others no if he did not want something or wanted to participate in a different activity. Those small breakthroughs led to a set of social skills that now have Blake soaring towards success! Blake was able to move out of Larry’s Home before his 22nd birthday – a feat not possible for all residents – and settle in at the Newport Home with a group of other young adults. Andrew said the social dynamic is night and day from when he first met Blake, as the group of housemates have become close and all of them excel at engaging with each other, giving each other space when needed and collaborating to make sure community outings involve something they all want to do. Seeing Blake make the transition from a children’s home to an adult setting was so rewarding for Andrew, but it also shows when you help create these little moments – the connections between us – lives are changed! Just like Andrew says, “Every single time one of my guys leaves for an adult program, it’s hard, but it’s also the goal.”

BRENDA TOOK A CAREER LEAP – THANKS TO YOU! Brenda, at 58 years old, had years of experience working in different group employment programs and had a lot of time spent within group settings. Through your support, the employment program at Little City provided her – like so many others – with group work opportunities doing jobs at hospitals and even a publishing company putting stickers on books. The group settings are comfortable for participants, but for Brenda it limited her desire for independence and growth. So in 2021, she took the leap to pursue a community-based job that would require her to be all on her own. Midway through the year, Brenda was paired with a new job coach, Anna. The pair clicked immediately as Brenda started in the EDS program and began her classroom work – an intensive course to develop interview skills, job etiquette, and the independence needed to handle a full community-based job. “From the very beginning, she’s been genuinely excited to get into the workforce,” Anna said. “It was a dream situation for her. She works really, really hard to learn the tasks on the job.” In just six months, Brenda found success in the classroom and her dream job became a reality – she landed a job at the Daily Herald as a paper processor. Proving that it is never too late to make a change and accomplish a dream. It is support from donors like you that participants are able to be provided with classroom training and intensive coursework to help prepare them for community-based jobs. It was the classroom that Brenda excelled at and prepared her the most for her leap! “Brenda is very focused and works so hard on her classwork. She’s always paying attention and trying to learn everything she can,” said Cheryl Burke, a classroom teacher for the EDS program. “You have to prove yourself in the classroom and show you have the skills someone would desire to hire you. It doesn’t matter how long it takes or how old you are, these students can make these great accomplishments happen like Brenda.” It didn’t take long for Brenda to become a leader by example in the class and now she is employed. Brenda works three days a week at the Daily Herald and is learning to use the PACE system to handle her own transportation. She said she plans to keep working at the Daily Herald for as long as she can. “I think this is a perfect fit for her,” Anna said. “The work environment here has been great, and they are very patient and let her grow into the job and get comfortable.”

10

THESE LITTLE MOMENTS – COURSEWORK, LEARNING HOW TO INTERVIEW FOR A JOB, UNDERSTANDING JOB ETIQUETTE – ARE CREATED THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF DONORS LIKE YOU. AND WITH BRENDA, THAT SUPPORT MEANT A DREAM COMING TRUE!

YOU ARE HELPING PUT FAMILY INTO FOSTER CARE Fabi Ochoa and Kieran Cassillo are putting family into foster family. While they knew they always wanted to foster, they did not expect to be able to do so much so quickly and establish lifelong relationships not just with the children, but the families as well. The young Chicago couple has fostered six children through Little City so far in a three-year span and has learned that family really is everything when it comes to being a foster parent. “Anytime we have a foster child, our goal is to keep a strong relationship with the biological family,” said Fabi, a social worker herself. “There is a misconception about people who need foster care, but I always tell people these families love their children. They really love them and just are in a tough spot or need a little help for a while.” Because of donors like you who support the Foster Care & Adoption program, Fabi and Kieran are able to play a vital role in addressing a statewide issue as more than 21,000 children are in need of foster care. Placements can be even more difficult for children with developmental disabilities or emotional or behavioral challenges. “We’ve fostered kids with autism and with cerebral palsy and those are issues I haven’t worked with before as a teacher,” Kieran said. “It has been great to learn about those disabilities and how to work with kids who have those issues and they’ve been just really sweet and great kids.” Fabi said the children they fostered in the past still come to visit – and even sleepover at times – and the parents are always thankful and grateful and treat Fabi and Kieran like part of their own family. She said that dynamic has motivated them to keep fostering and made them realize the stigma that foster parents and biological families are destined to bump heads. “In some ways, there is not just this goal to reunify the child with their biological family, but to have the parents still raising the kid even while they are in our home,” Kieran said. “So we are sure to communicate with them, get their feedback and try to plan their future together.” The strong relationships with both the children they have cared for and the families is in part thanks to Little City, Fabi said. In her work as a social worker and her involvement in foster family groups, she said she has seen and heard plenty of examples where case workers and agencies become unreachable and unhelpful. But she said no matter the case worker who has been assigned to them, everyone at Little City has gone above and beyond in helping anyway they can along the way. This is the impact you have on this life-changing program for kids who need a family. “I’ve wanted to be a foster parent for as long as I can remember and the experience has been even better than I could have imagined,” Fabi said. “We’re going to keep doing it for as long as we can.” Fabi and Kieran’s next foster child joined them in February and will be the longest term placement they’ve had, potentially staying with them up to eight years. They simply see it as another opportunity to make another family, family.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS BASKETBALL TEAM FINDING SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE COURT This has certainly been a special year on the basketball court for everyone involved . . . but also off the court, too. Coached by Shawn Sullivan, the Special Olympics basketball team at Little City is having one of its best years ever – in fact, the team completed an undefeated December and they have their sights set on qualifying for the state tournament. But for as impressive as the results have been on the court, it is the skills the participants are taking off the court that stand out the most. “It’s been an amazing experience so far,” Shawn said. “They were a team right away and are always really kind to each other and supportive.” Whether it is Simone bringing out the competitiveness, Jeff bringing the energy, or Mark playing with defensive prowess, each player has a unique personality and being able to participate on the team has brought out even more in them. One player in particular has shown just what being on a team can do on – and off – the court. Tony is a Special Olympics veteran, having won medals in state and national competitions in powerlifting. His experience has allowed him to be a leader, helping teammates come together and feel comfortable with his kindness and sense of humor to keep it fun. “Tony is a great guy and a really good basketball player,” Shawn said. ”He is always willing to do whatever was ask of him. He’s just an awesome teammate and really kind to everyone.” It has been the most successful year of basketball for Little City in years as both Shawn’s and fellow first-year coach Reuben Rosczyk’s teams are undefeated. But most importantly the little moments and connections each day have helped every participant grow more than ever before. “I have seen all these guys around campus for years and gotten to know them during the course of my job, but it has been awesome connecting with them in this way,” Shawn said. “I was just looking for a way to give back at first and this has turned out to be more than I expected. I’m having fun, we’re all having fun. And while I thought I knew them pretty well before, I think we all understand each other even more now.”

14

YOUR SUPPORT IS WHAT HELPS THIS TEAM COME TOGETHER FOR PRACTICE, LEARN ABOUT COMPETITION AND TEAMWORK, BUT ULTIMATELY BE CHALLENGED TO FIND NEW THINGS WITHIN THEMSELVES . . . TO GROW, TO LEARN, AND TO REACH TOWARDS THEIR UNIQUE POTENTIAL ON AND OFF THE COURT!

15

THIS IS YOUR IMPACT THROUGH NEWLY FORMED SERVICES LIKE THE CRISIS TEAM – YOU ARE HELPING CREATE LITTLE MOMENTS THAT ARE CHANGING THE LIVES OF STUDENTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES . . . ENABLING THEM TO REACH THEIR UNIQUE POTENTIAL.

16

A NEW TRANSITION TEAM IS HELPING STUDENTS LIKE EVAN EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM! Change can be hard for many with developmental disabilities and that is especially true for someone like Evan who thrives with a set schedule and structure. And the transition into school can sometimes be very challenging for students. But not anymore thanks to the newly formed crisis team at the ChildBridge Center for Education. This team of four works to help prevent and de-escalate disruptive behaviors throughout the day so teachers and therapists can continue to work effectively with classes and students. One staff member, Sam Shah, made the transition to this new team and says the new opportunity has been amazing. “The kids spend the majority of their day here at the school so instead of just getting them ready in the morning at home and then doing chores while they are gone, I am able to work with them a lot more,” Sam said. “It’s been really fulfilling.” The little moments between Sam and Evan, a student in the school, is an example of how your support is enabling such an essential team to make an impact. Over the months of working with Evan at Larry’s Home, Sam and Evan developed a trust with each other that has helped Evan in his transition to a new classroom at school. But as Evan transitioned into a new classroom after winter break, Sam was there to help him navigate the change and there has been no disruption or adverse reactions from Evan as a result. “He’s been doing phenomenal for someone who needs things to be set in place,” Sam said of Evan’s transition at school. “He’s been doing great with the uncertainty and has shown a lot of progress in being able to handle the changes. He has a great one-on-one teacher here at the school helping him with that, but I am happy to be here to help.” He said watching people like Evan be able to make incredible progress at both the home and in school is why he has developed such a passion for the work and said he hopes to help Evan reach even higher goals. “All the kids have their own personalities, and sometimes wildly different. You can’t apply the same therapy to every person who has autism,” he said. “I find a lot of joy in getting to know each of them and figuring out the best way to help them grow.”

17

VOICES & CHOICES: A LITTLE MOMENT YOU HELP CREATE THAT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT! It’s never too late for the power of music to help change a person. During the course of each day, Helen, the director of Voices & Choices, will gather about five people at a time to come to a designated area in the Center for Employment & Business Opportunities and spend 30 minutes taking turns choosing a favorite song to listen to. The seemingly simple concept has the ability to instill confidence, improve social skills, and help people learn to speak up for what they need and want in their everyday lives. “This isn’t music therapy, but music is therapy,” Helen said. “This is a part of their day where they get to really control what they do. They get to choose what they want to listen to, if they want to sing or perform or just listen and they learn a little more about each other and themselves.” One recent example of the program’s power to help people break out of their shells can be seen in Sharon. Helen said she had tried for years to encourage Sharon to participate in the program, but she would always decline, preferring the comparative seclusion of whatever work she was doing. But COVID changed everything. As facilities were closed during the peak of the pandemic, staff would go to the homes to offer programming and support residents. Helen had the opportunity to work in Sharon’s home and that is when Sharon fully embraced Voices & Choices. As she discovered the music she loved listening to, she became more eager to participate, and now is comfortable taking part in the program back at the Center in a group setting. “Sharon might listen to a pop song, Luke listens to classical songs, they all have different personalities that music can help them see in themselves and in each other,” Helen said. “It’s been great to see Sharon open up and discover this thing that brings her happiness.” Though this small, 30-minute activity that happens is not widely known to many outside the Little City Campus, the importance of the program is in the name itself – Voices & Choices. When people with developmental disabilities have the opportunity to make their own choices and use their own voices, it is a skill that can be incredibly important in their everyday lives. And that little moment, each day, is what you are helping create. “Music brings everyone together. Music gives a place where everyone belongs and shows we’re not so different, Helen said. “It is my favorite thing to do, watching them pick their favorite songs that give them a sense of joy.”

18

THESE LITTLE MOMENTS ARE CREATED BECAUSE OF YOU. SOMETIMES IT’S JUST 30 MINUTES, BUT THAT’S ALL IT TAKES TO HELP AN INDIVIDUAL WITH A DISABILITY GROW AND FIND SUCCESS IN THEIR LIFE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

IN LOVING MEMORY OF This past year, Little City suffered the difficult loss of its eldest resident. Her life impacted so many people in profound ways. We miss her greatly, and her spirit will live on in all those who have had the privilege of being a part of her life.

SENOBIA CALDERON

b. MARCH 22, 1938

25 Years at Little City | Remembrance by LaCresha Everett On July 7, 2021, long-time Little City resident Senobia Calderon passed away at 83 years old. Senobia came to Little City in 1996 and leaves behind a lifetime of joyful memories and warm moments with everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Senobia was always a positive presence and could brighten any room with her positivity. While she touched countless lives and had befriended so many at Little City, one special relationship was with LaCresha Everett who knew Senobia for more than 20 years. LaCresha shared the following memories about her friend Senobia. “I had the pleasure of meeting Senobia 22 years ago. At the time, Senobia was living in Mt. Prospect at the Kenilworth Home. In the early 2000s, Senobia and her peers moved to the Plum Grove Home in Palatine. Senobia had such a beautiful soul and a smile that would light up any room she entered. She referred to staff as “Ma” in almost every situation. Her conversations would often start with something like “Hey, Ma, How you doing, Ma? Where we going, Ma?” Senobia loved her caps, purses and looking at photos. She loved showing off her ribbons and medals that she won when she was able to participate in the Special Olympic summer games. It was truly a blessing to be able to serve Senobia with the best quality and care that she so very well deserved here at Little City. Senobia, “Ma,” you will truly be missed. Thank you for bringing so much joy to my heart.” We extend our heartfelt thoughts to all her friends and family, especially those that knew her so well at the Plum Grove home. She left an incredible impact on all who knew her and all of us at Little City feel blessed to have had her as part of our family.
