COVID-19 Testing Site Available in Greenview SC DHEC and Genetworx are collaborating to provide a Covid-19 testing site in the Greenview Community. Located at Reid Chapel AME Church, (704 Gabriel Street), the testing site is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

This is a FREE testing site. No registration is required.

This is a drive-through testing site; you do not need to get out of your car. For more information call (610) 726-1205.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings, Because of the outbreak of COVID 19, we are now living in uncertain times. During times like this, our faith can be challenged, and it can be hard to see where God fits in with this new normal. This virus is creating new ways for everyone to think of how to keep our family and friends safe. We are in uncharted territory.

There are basic health practices we must seriously follow, not only for ourselves but on behalf of others. Healthy people, those with no symptoms and no awareness of having the disease, can carry it to others. We owe it to one another to pay attention to each other, to advise one another and check on one another.

(Isaiah 40:31) Faith is what gives us the courage to keep going when we feel overwhelmed. It is through faith in God that we can trust in His goodness.

CITY COUNCIL NEWS Richland Library is continuing to serve the community with drive-through Covid -19 sites at several locations Online story times, book club meetings, special programs and social-work services are available on the library’s website.

All locations are open for drive-through and curbside pick-ups and returns. Outdoor laptop use is available at 12 locations. Four locations are accepting inperson services and outdoor browsing is available at all locations except Main. District One Councilman Announces Retirement.

Long-time City Councilman Sam Davis has announced that he will not seek reelection when his terms ends December 31, 2021.

Councilman Davis has been a friend and supporter of the Greenview Reunion Foundation over the years, attending sponsored events and responding to constituent calls and concerns. We thank him for his service and wish him the best in his retirement from Columbia City Council.

In other Council news, long-time Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin announced that he will not seek re-election at the end of his term.

Benjamin has held office since April 2010 when he made history as the first African American Mayor Columbia has had. He is the city’s 36th mayor. By the end of his term on December 31, he will have served in the role for nearly 12 years.

At the time of publication, two current Council members, Tameika Devine and Daniel Rickenmann have announced their intentions to seek the office of mayor in addition to Sam Johnson, a former aide to Mayor Benjamin.

COMMUNITY NEWS In need of college students to complete projects at your home?

The Big Event is for you!

UofSC’s Big Event is an opportunity for students to develop relationships with local community members and give thanks for the resources that the city and its constituents provide to the university.

UofSC Students complete service at local nonprofits and local homeowners residences across Columbia. This year’s Big Event will occur April 3rd and we are looking for individual homeowners who would like students to complete service projects on their homes!

Tasks students typically complete include painting, lawn care, clearing out gutters, organizing garages or storage spaces, building railings and small projects, etc. These services are great for elderly homeowners, but anyone is welcome to submit a project for volunteers to help with!

To ensure the safety of our student volunteers we complete “Project Checks” which is a quick visit to your house prior to the day of service to ensure our students will be in a safe environment.

This year due to COVID-19 we are requiring all students to wear face masks, get temperature checked, and practice social distancing while on site. We will do everything we can to work with you to ensure you feel safe while volunteers are at your home.

CITY OF COLUMBIA ZONING MAP PROCESS UPDATE The Council did not take a vote on the proposed new zoning map at its January 19 public hearing but intends to provide additional time for the public to continue to learn about the project and contact staff with questions or concerns. For questions or comments, please e-mail zoningmap@columbiasc.gov or call 803545-3333.The current proposed effective date of the ordinance and code is August 30, 2021.

GREENVIEW REUNION FOUNDATION OFFICERS The Greenview Reunion Foundation was organized in 2003 by current and former residents who were committed to giving back to their community.

The foundation’s purpose is to award academic scholarships through the Carolyn Wood-Ellison Scholarship Banquet fund to qualifying high school seniors and to sponsor and provide service to enhance the betterment of the community.
