Former President/CEO of Georgia’s Own Credit Union
During Ayers’ tenure, we underwent a rebrand, changing our name from Georgia Telco to Georgia’s Own, and we reached $1.5 billion in assets. We also doubled our membership before her retirement after 41 years of service—11 of which she served as president. Charlotte was a trailblazer in the financial services industry during her administration and her legacy remains an integral part of our history!
Andrew Young
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
Andrew Young’s impact on Georgia is undeniable. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives, became the first Black U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (under fellow Georgia native Jimmy Carter), and later led Atlanta as mayor, attracting significant investment opportunities and empowering minority- and women-owned businesses.

Atlanta Native and Former MLB Outfielder
Nicknamed “Frenchy”, he electrified Atlanta baseball fans with his exciting plays and powerful bat. A first-round draft pick, he rose through the minors and delivered a memorable debut with a home run in his first at-bat. He also earned a Golden Glove for his stellar defense.
After a successful career with multiple teams, Francoeur returned to Atlanta as a broadcaster, sharing his passion for the game with a new generation of fans.
Angel McCoughtry
Trailblazer of Women’s Basketball
Drafted first overall by the Atlanta Dream in 2009, McCoughtry became a franchise cornerstone, leading the team in scoring and earning multiple All-Star selections. Her talent and dedication helped the Dream become a force in the WNBA. We recognize Angel McCoughtry not only for her basketball brilliance, but also for her spirit and strength that defines Georgia!

Executive Director of Mims Kids and Tifton City Councilman
Mims Kids works to introduce kids to the arts and broaden their horizons through travel. They focus on teaching younger generations speaking, manners and etiquette, community service, and other life skills.
M. Jay works tirelessly as both the Executive Director of Mims Kids and as the District 4 Representative for Tifton’s City Council. His dedication to his community is inspiring, and we’re proud to call him one of Georgia’s Own.
Evander Holyfield
Former Professional Boxer
Nicknamed “the Real Deal,” Holyfield cemented his place in the boxing ring as the only four-time world heavyweight champion. Reigning supreme in both cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, he’s the only boxer to win the undisputed championship in two weight classes during the sport’s three-belt era. Holyfield’s relentless fighting style earned him legendary status throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His career spanned from 1984 to 2011, leaving an unmatched legacy in the ring.
Paul Milliken
Emmy Award-winning Meteorologist
Feature reporter at Fox 5 Atlanta, Paul Milliken is a University of Florida graduate whose first job was in Idaho Falls. Before he made his way to Atlanta, he was a morning reporter in Orlando and then moved to Richmond, where he became a meteorologist.
At Fox 5 Atlanta, he has been nominated for several Emmy Awards. While working in Richmond, he won a 2010 Emmy for Best Weather Anchor, plus numerous other accolades, including a Best Weathercast award two years in a row.
Cathy Revell
Director, Helping Hands Ending Hunger
One out of four children in Georgia don’t know where they’ll get their next meal--Helping Hands Ending Hunger works to provide food-insecure kids in the Dougherty County community nutritious meals when they’re not in school. Cathy serves on their Board of Directors. She helped facilitate the implementation of the program in Dougherty County Schools and achieved Dougherty County School District Partner of the Year in 2021.
Haley Clark
Executive Director, Serenity House
Haley is one of our members and is the Executive Director of Serenity House, a domestic violence shelter for women and children. The shelter serves South Georgia and provides legal advocacy, counseling, social services, and other resources. In 2023, they served 577 women and children, and have served 106 women and children year-to-date.
Ken Bevel
Connections & Local Missions Pastor, Sherwood Hope Center
Ken is one of our members and is the Connections and Local Missions pastor for the Sherwood Hope Center, which serves residents of Albany and surrounding counties. They hold weekly food distributions, as well as partner with local businesses to host Sweet Sleep Albany to provide beds to school-aged children. They also teach basic life skills classes for adults, as well as host park and yard clean-ups.
Jon Osso
United States Senator
From Georgia, Senator Jon Osso was elected to the U.S. Senate in January of 2021. Osso has been active in advocating for progressive policies and aims to address systemic inequalities. He is known for his focus on issues such as healthcare, civil rights, and economic justice. He is the youngest member of the Senate and has been a prominent figure in shaping policies aimed at addressing challenges facing Georgia and the nation.
Connie Hunter is one of our members and is a mentor at Still Waters, a ministry that helps displaced women and their children. She’s active in the Bainbridge community and has been teaching Bible study to the elderly at Riverside Place for 12 years. She also taught Sunday School to incarcerated women for four years. Connie is a past mentor of 1 On 1 Mentoring, which helps at-risk youth.
started one of the first after-school childcare programs in Albany, Leesburg, Cordele, and Sylvester. She has served on the Leesburg City Council for 16 years and serves on the Board for the Lee County Chamber of Commerce and the Flint RiverQuarium. Judy is also a volunteer with the Albany-area YMCA’s financial assistance program. She received the local Kiwanis Community Impact Award in 2023.
Jimmy Hu
Former President of DOCO Credit Union
Jimmy Hu was the president of DOCO Credit Union for 31 years. He believed in the philosophy, “Try to make sure that you do good in the world as you go through life.” Mr. Hu was a member of the Exchange Club of Albany for more than 30 years and served as chairman for various organizations. He gave back to his community through volunteering, including coaching youth baseball.
HOPE Atlanta
Organization Dedicated to Fighting Homelessness
One out of 10 kids in Georgia lives in a household that struggles to a ord basic needs—and it’s only exacerbated during the summer. HOPE Atlanta works to fight homelessness and hunger across Metro Atlanta through its various initiatives like Pack the Pantry. Pack the Pantry works to bridge this gap for families when school is out.
The Presidential Scholarship awards $5,000 to a senior in high school who plans to major in business. This award is funded by our President & CEO, David A. Preter, and is designed to help shape future credit union leaders.
Carter is an honors graduate of Seckinger High School and is currently attending Oglethorpe University.

Emmy Award-winning Meteorologist
Weatherman Chesley McNeil joined 11Alive in 2009, instantly becoming a fan favorite. He holds a BA in Mass Communications from Wesley College and a BS and MS in Geosciences from Mississippi State University. Chesley is a member of the American Meteorology Society, the National Weather Association, and the National Association of Black Journalists. Notably, he was also named to the Severe Weather Task Force in 2013 by former Governor Nathan Deal.

Dr. Brooks Keel, PhD, (pictured left) served as the President of Augusta University, where he was instrumental in promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and expanding research initiatives. Dr. Russell Keen, EdD, (pictured right) serves as the President of Augusta University, where he is dedicated to advancing the institution’s mission of education, research, and health care.

Zach Klein
Sports Director at WSB-TV
Zach anchors the sports segment for Channel 2 Action News at 6:00, the Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat, and Sports Zone Sunday. He’s also involved in the weekly University of Georgia program—Bulldogs Gameday and Bulldogs Gameweek.
Zach joined WSB-TV in 2008 after five years at WFTV in earned his degree from the University of Kansas, and he’s won multiple Emmy and AP awards.
JB Carr is remarkable and impossible to overlook. His vibrant personality resonates with ours, and we share a delightful camaraderie, often making jokes with one another. As a respected pastor in our community, a few of our team attended a revival where he was preaching, eager to hear his message. During the service, he took a moment to proudly declare our Georgia’s Own team as his family. His relatives are all part of our community, and we cherish our bonds with them dearly.

Mrs. Pamela Kirtz is an absolute delight! As one of our beloved lunch ladies from school, her cheerful spirit always brightens our day. A few years ago, we gifted her some bracelets to match ours, and her joy upon receiving them was truly heartwarming.

Malcolm Mitchell
Super Bowl Champion and Author
Malcolm Mitchell played football for the University of Georgia from 2011-2015. During that time, he received numerous awards, including the team’s Comeback Player of the Year award in 2014 after tearing his ACL the previous season. The New England Patriots selected him in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. While with the Patriots, he was part of the team that defeated the Falcons in Super Bowl LI.
Malcolm wasn't a strong reader when he started college, but grew to love it and wanted to encourage children to do the same. He released his first children's book in 2016, The Magician's Hat, and continues to write with the goal of sharing the magic of reading with his youngest fans.
Raphael Warnock
U.S. Senator from Georgia
Senator Warnock has served as the junior United States senator since 2021. He graduated cum laude from Morehouse College, wanting to follow in Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps. He’s served as Ebenezer Baptist Church’s senior pastor for over 16 years and is the youngest pastor selected in that leadership role at the church.
Senator Warnock is on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; Banking, Housing, and Urban A airs Committee; Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Special Committee on Aging.
Sportscaster for NBC Sports
Maria is an Atlanta native and graduated from Centennial High School in Roswell, where she played both basketball and volleyball and earned numerous awards. She went on to play basketball and volleyball at the University of Georgia.
Maria is the first woman to hold the top spot on Football Night in America, the most-watched sports studio show. Her resume is stacked, hosting major events like the NBA Finals, the Olympics, and the NBA Draft.
Amanda Russo
Thomasville High School Teacher
Mandy Russo was one of three educators selected to receive $900 in school supplies this past August. She's been a teacher for 12 years and currently teaches AP chemistry and AP physics. As a science teacher, Mandy often pays for the extra supplies needed out of her pocket. She truly cares about her students’ successes and keeps snacks for her students who miss breakfast or are hungry so they can concentrate.
Krysten Hall was one of three educators selected to receive $900 in school supplies this past August. Krysten teaches fourth-grade math and science, and she has been teaching for 13 years. After being out of the classroom for several years, Krysten has had to put forth time and money to rebuild her classroom. She wants to create an art supply station for her students so that she can incorporate art into her curriculum.

KIPP WAYS Academy Teacher
Camille Bratton was one of three educators selected to receive $900 in school supplies this past August. Camille teaches eighth-grade math and has been teaching for seven years. She teaches at a Title I school, which means her students need more resources available to them.
Camille understands that math is challenging for some students, and she wants the necessary tools and supplies to close that gap.

CMN partners with various hospitals, including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), which provides comprehensive care to children in Georgia and surrounding areas. Dominique Wilkins
Former Atlanta Hawks Legend
Dominque Wilkins made his mark at the University of Georgia, averaging 21.6 points a game throughout his Bulldogs career. He was picked third overall in the 1982 draft by Utah, but he was traded to Atlanta. Wilkins was a powerhouse for the ‘80s Hawks, earning the distinction of a nine-time All-Star and the winner of two slam dunk contests.
His #21 jersey was retired by the Hawks in 2001, making him one of five players whose jerseys have been retired by the organization.
Lauren Bingham
Breast Cancer Survivor
Lauren was diagnosed with Stage II invasive lobular carcinoma at age 50. She lost her mother to the same disease and had her first mammogram at 35. Despite undergoing a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation, Lauren is grateful every day.
Lauren is a coordinator at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge and volunteers as a Road to Recovery driver. “I learned so much about myself, my attitude, and the type of person I want to be during my cancer treatment.” Lauren says.
Demestric Hurst
Despite no family history of breast cancer, Demestric was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ stage 0 in the left breast. After consultation and treatment alternatives, she had a double mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction. “The best advice I can give is to have faith, get your mammogram, and think positively through it all,” Demestric says. Edna Betancourth
Breast Cancer Survivor
Edna works at CHEP and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022—two days before Christmas. Her colleagues made her feel supported, and her journey introduced them to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative.
“Cancer can happen to anyone and can go undetected,” Edna says. “I didn’t notice anything myself. I had no lumps and breast cancer did not run in my family, but still, I happened to have it. So, I would say book your appointment now if you haven’t had a mammogram yet.”
Diagnosed with myeloma in 2016, Keri underwent a stem cell transplant and beat cancer. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer but fortunately caught it early.
"I'm grateful to the American Cancer Society for resources and support." Keri says. A longtime Making Strides participant, this was her first walk as a breast cancer survivor. “I’m proud to wear the pink survivor shirt, but we need to think beyond the pink and spread awareness for breast cancer year-round.”
Felicia Mahone
Breast Cancer Survivor
After losing multiple family members to breast cancer, Felicia was diagnosed at 27 with an aggressive form—triple negative. Testing revealed she inherited a genetic mutation that increased her risk, and she was uninsured.
Despite financial hardship, she fought and became the first survivor in her family. "Silence and financial hardship are common for African American women." Felicia says. Now an advocate, she helps other Black women find resources and encouragement.

Board Chairman of Georgia’s Own Credit Union
Richard Burns enjoyed a 32-year career in telecommunications serving as an O cer of BellSouth and subsequently AT&T. He served as President of BellSouth’s Internet Services, Chief Supply Chain O cer, and Chief Integration O cer for Broadband Transformation. At AT&T he was President of AT&T’s Wireless Network.
Burns has served on Georgia's Own Credit Union's Board of Directors since 2000 and currently serves as Board Chairman. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Louisville as well as a Master’s of Business Administration from Vanderbilt University.
Known for her warm presence, Monica Pearson is a former anchor at WSB-TV and a celebrated journalist for the impact she made during her tenure at the station. She became the first African American female anchor in Atlanta and garnered numerous awards for her work. She continues influencing the community through public speaking engagements, philanthropic e orts, and mentorship programs!
Steve Koonin
CEO of the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena
Lifelong Atlantan Steve Koonin became the CEO of the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena in April 2014, overseeing all business and strategic operations. Under his leadership, the Hawks have enhanced their brand and community engagement, notably transforming State Farm Arena into a top-rated venue. Koonin has also championed initiatives like building basketball courts in disadvantaged communities. His extensive background includes significant roles at Turner Broadcasting and Coca-Cola, and he actively contributes to various Atlanta organizations.
With his engaging personality and quick wit, Steve Barnes became a staple of Atlanta’s radio scene, shaping the soundtrack of the city’s mornings as the co-host of The Morning X on 99X from 1994 to 2003, earning numerous awards. In addition to his on-air success, Barnes has pursued a diverse career in acting, making his mark in entertainment. In 2023, Barnes returned to 99X and relaunched “The Morning X” brand. His influence on Atlanta’s media and culture remains strong, making him a local favorite.

These sisters founded Ivory Twinz Kreations after being gifted sewing lessons for Christmas. They were immediately hooked—with their parents’ encouragement, Leyla and Ilyana began designing and sewing accessories, like scrunchies and headbands.

Molly is the pint-sized creator whose love of bees inspired her to create her own lip balm line made with beeswax from her grandparents’ beehives. They use all-natural ingredients including beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic shea butter, and essential oils.

As the founder of CNN, Ted Turner revolutionized the news industry by creating the first 24-hour news network. He also founded WTBS, which later became TBS, bringing programming to millions. A passionate environmentalist and humanitarian, Turner founded the United Nations Foundation and has contributed to global conservation e orts. His legacy reflects a lifelong commitment to bold ideas, philanthropy, and media innovation.
Mayor Dickens
Mayor—City of Atlanta
Mayor Andre Dickens was born and raised in Atlanta. He received a degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech and a Masters of Public Administration in Economic Development from Georgia State University. Mayor Dickens’s most notable accomplishments include spearheading one of Atlanta’s largest-ever single-housing investments, and his administration continues to advocate for a ordable housing.
Mayor Dickens is a deacon at New Horizon Baptist Church. He enjoys spending time with his daughter, experiencing live music, and traveling—he's also an avid supporter of Atlanta’s sports teams.

Kayla Jones, Consumer Loan O cer, served in the Army Reserves, E4, for eight years. In 2012, Newby was named of one of Forbes Magazine's Most Powerful CEOs under the age of 40. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina with a BS in Business Administration and concentration in Finance.
Chuck Dowdle
Georgia’s Own Foundation Board Member
Chuck Dowdle is the former Sports Director/Anchor for WSB-TV’s Channel 2 Action News and a former sideline reporter for the University of Georgia football team. Originally from Atlanta, Chuck attended the University of Georgia in his freshman year, where he played forward for the basketball team. He transferred to Georgia State University, where he was a pitcher for the baseball team in his junior and senior years. After graduating college, Chuck’s career took o when he was hired at WPGL in Miami, where he covered the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami. As one of Georgia’s Own, we are proud to have him as a board member of the Georgia’s Own Foundation.
Jessie Runner is a long-time member who frequents the Conyers branch. She's been a member since 1979. Runner is 96 years old and still drives to our branch to do her transactions. She gave us a five-star Google rating and stated, "I have banked at Georgia's Own for years and am always treated special. Everyone goes beyond the call of duty to assist in every way. I wish every business had this e cient sta ."
Je rey Flowers
Georgia’s Own Member
Je Flowers joined the Medical College of Georgia as the only Chaplain in 1994. Flowers retired in 2022 as the Director of Spiritual Care. During his time as director, he grew the department by fifteen chaplains—five full-time and ten part-time. Flowers has always been a strong supporter and passionate advocate for the Credit Union on campus and in the community.
Rob Graybill joined Health Center Credit Union (HCCU) as CEO in 1988 after a 25-year career in the banking industry. He was elected to the HCCU Board of Directors in 1990 and served until 2023. Following his retirement in 2000, Graybill served the credit union industry for many years as a consultant for the Georgia Credit Union League, helping small credit unions reach their potential. After HCCU's merger with Georgia's Own, Graybill transitioned to our Advisory Board and we are incredibly grateful for how he has served our organization.
Libby Poteet
Former Health Center Credit Union Board Chair
Libby Poteet retired after 30+ years as Student Coordinator for the Medical College of Georgia. She joined the Heath Center Credit Union (HCCU) Supervisory Committee in 1999 and was elected to the Board in 2017. As a Supervisory Committee member, Libby was instrumental in elevating our internal audit function and as Board Chair she guided us through the merger process to become the East Region of Georgia’s Own.
Rhonda Banks and her sister have been members of the credit union since the day they were born! Her father worked for Southern Bell and opened their accounts for them. Banks went to work at Augusta State University in 2011, where she currently serves as Interim Associate Vice President. She remains a proud member of Georgia's Own to this day.
Patsy James

Patsy James is a respected community leader in the southwest Georgia region. Known for her dedication to local initiatives and volunteer work, James has made significant contributions to the betterment of her community through various programs and outreach initiatives. James currently serves as Executive Director of Lee County Family Connections, a non-profit that works collaboratively with community partners to meet the needs of families in this area.
An Experience for Children with Illnesses and Disabilities
Camp Twin Lakes is a premier camping facility with three accessible and medically adaptive campuses in north Georgia that provides enriching experiences for children with illnesses and disabilities. The collaborative e orts and shared commitment to supporting youth in need are evident as they actively participate in fundraising e orts to help enhance the camp's programs and facilities. Together with the community, they work towards creating memorable experiences for campers while fostering a sense of community and inclusion.
Mary Ellen Gibbs

MaryEllen Gibbs is a Georgia's Own member who has made a lasting impression on our employees. One story our team will always remember is when, years ago, a stray dog whom our employees named 'Daisy' was hanging around our Eastman branch. The dog wouldn't let anyone near it, except MaryEllen! MaryEllen decided to give Daisy a forever home and still shares updates and photos with the Eastman team.
MaryEllen is described as having the sweetest soul and is adored by our employees and the community.

Their long-standing relationship with the Credit Union exemplifies the spirit of community and support that the organization strives to promote!
Dave Preter is Georgia’s Own President & CEO. Before assuming his current position in 2011, Preter facilitated growth in the credit union industry by bolstering and executing the strategic plan of several organizations in the Midwest and Southeast United States. Throughout his career, he has developed acute expertise in operations, lending, finance, product management, investment and risk management, all of which have played a critical role in fostering financial and physical growth under his leadership.
Linton & Cathy Turner

Linton and Cathy Turner have been loyal members of the Credit Union since the 1970s when it was known as Georgia Telco. During Linton's 25 years overseas in Kuwait, first with AT&T and later with IT&T, Cathy received exceptional support from the Credit Union, which solidified their trust in the institution. Even though the nearest branch is now 45 minutes away, they continue to make the drive because Cathy feels comfortable and valued by the sta . Additionally, both of their sons are proud members and we are honored the Turners continue to find a financial home in Georgia’s Own!
