An interview with dynamic comedian and actor

CHRIS TUCKER

In the entertainment industry, few names shine as brightly as that of Chris Tucker. From his breakout role in the Friday franchise to iconic performances in Rush Hour and beyond, Tucker’s infectious energy and quick wit have left an unforgettable mark on the world of comedy and film. In an exclusive and candid interview, we had the privilege of delving into the mind of the multifaceted artist. Known for his contagious laughter, quick-witted humor, and magnetic stage presence, Chris Tucker has become a household name, celebrated for his contributions to both film and comedy. Join us as we unravel the layers of Chris Tucker’s journey, learning more about the man behind the laughter and the inspirations that have fueled his extraordinary career. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF CHRIS TUCKER LOOK LIKE?

Most [of my days] start with prayer and breakfast. A good part of the day is spent working. If I am not preparing for a stand-up show or filming, I try to get a workout in, too. WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME?

I grew up in Decatur, Georgia, but currently live in Vegas. GROWING UP, WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN ACTING AND COMEDY? WHEN DID YOU START PERFORMING?

Yes! As long as I can remember, I wanted to act. My passion for comedy came in high school. My first performance was as a host for my high school talent show. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF COMEDY AND ACTING?

In early high school, I discovered my dream of performing and decided to go for it. Comedy clubs were how I got started and worked really hard on my stand-up shows. It was the comedy shows that helped me prepare for the movie opportunities. WHICH ROLE OR PROJECT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE OR IMPACTFUL IN YOUR CAREER, AND WHY?

I have to say Rush Hour. The Rush Hour franchise was a memorable opportunity for me. The first film was such a success that it led to two sequels. Jackie Chan and I are still good friends.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH PREPARING FOR A COMEDIC ROLE VERSUS A DRAMATIC ROLE?

For comedy roles, you have to stay fresh and be ready to adlib at any given time. Performing in comedy clubs helps me stay on my game. As for drama, those roles take more research and memorizing lines. CAN YOU SHARE ANY FUNNY OR MEMORABLE BEHIND-THE-SCENES MOMENTS FROM ANY OF YOUR FILMS?

On the Rush Hour set, Jackie [Chan] would bring me a gift every day. I almost went broke trying to keep up with him! HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COMEDY FRESH AND RELEVANT IN AN EVER-CHANGING ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY?

Personally, staying in the comedy clubs is huge! It really helps to keep your comedy acts fresh and keeps you relevant. I am constantly working on new material. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING COMEDIANS OR ACTORS LOOKING TO BREAK INTO THE INDUSTRY?

Always keep God first! Focus and work hard to master your craft.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR CAREER IN ACTING WITH YOUR PERSONAL LIFE AND OTHER INTERESTS?

You just have to take time to yourself sometimes. I spend a lot of time with my family and traveling. 6

WHY CREDIT UNIONS ARE SUPERIOR Credit unions put your best interest at forefront, which helps us stand out in a world of financial institutions! Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are not-for-profit organizations owned and operated by you—their members. The fundamental difference in structure plays a key role in shaping our unwavering commitment to serving you in the most advantageous way possible! Did you know that when you become a member of a credit union like Georgia’s Own, you become a shareholder in the institution? Credit unions are cooperatives—meaning that the profits generated are reinvested back into the organization to benefit the members, not distributed among external shareholders. This allows us to give you fewer and lower fees, better rates, and assurance of knowing that you and your success matter most. Georgia’s Own Credit Union structure cultivates trust and loyalty among members and communities across the state! When you choose a credit union, you are choosing a financial institution that prioritizes its members above all else. We hope that as you seek financial partners that align with your values, that we will continue to stand out as a trustworthy, member-focused alternative to traditional banks. Thank you for being one of Georgia’s Own!

IF YOU WERE NOT A SUCCESSFUL COMEDIAN AND ACTOR, WHAT JOB WOULD YOU HOLD?

I’m not sure. There was never a backup plan!

WHEN YOU AREN’T PERFORMING, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

Usually traveling and also working with my foundation the Chris Tucker Foundation. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PASSION AND MISSION BEHIND THE CHRIS TUCKER FOUNDATION?

The idea started when I traveled with Bono to Africa. It was there that I saw how much people everywhere need help. It led me to start my own foundation where we are helping people in all areas through supporting nonprofits and initiatives to improve lives. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT GEORGIA?

I’m from Georgia and my family resides in Georgia. My roots will always be in Georgia and that’s my favorite thing about the state. TELL US A FUN FACT THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU.

I’m a momma’s boy.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST FINANCIAL LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED IN LIFE? AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUTH?

Be sure to handle your own business and pay your taxes!!!

The Chris Tucker Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to bring about positive change in the lives of young people and families. Initially focused on AIDS relief, the foundation expanded its efforts to include local charity work such as providing scholarships to underprivileged children and the homeless. Their vision is to create a positive impact by bringing together community leaders, corporate partners, and the wider community to address the critical needs of today’s young generation. PREPARE NOW FOR TAX SEASON It’s time to start thinking about everyone’s favorite time of the year—tax season. While it might not be the most exciting topic, taking a proactive approach to your taxes can save you time, stress, and even money. Here are some steps you can take now to prepare for a smooth tax season: GATHER YOUR DOCUMENTS Start by collecting all the necessary documents you’ll need for filing your taxes. This includes W-2 forms, 1099 forms, receipts for deductible expenses, and any other relevant financial records. Having everything in one place will save you time and prevent last-minute scrambling. Tip for next year: Keep a folder of these records throughout the year so when this time rolls around, everything will be in one place. ORGANIZE YOUR RECORDS Keeping financial records organized is crucial. Consider using budgeting tools or financial software to track income and expenses throughout the year. Wellorganized records make it easier to complete your tax return accurately and efficiently. EXPLORE DEDUCTIONS AND CREDITS Familiarize yourself with available deductions and credits to minimize your tax liability. Common deductions include those for education expenses and charitable

contributions. Being aware of these opportunities can significantly impact the amount you owe or the refund you receive. FILE EARLY Did you know that you can avoid the stress of lastminute filing by completing your tax return ahead of the deadline? Filing early not only gives you peace of mind but allows you to receive any potential refunds sooner. CONSIDER E-FILING OR PROFESSIONAL HELP Decide whether you’ll tackle your taxes on your own using electronic filing (e-filing) or if you’ll enlist the help of a tax professional. E-filing is a convenient and secure way to submit your tax return. It reduces the risk of error and expedites the processing of your return. If you’re eligible for a refund, e-filing often results in faster refunds compared to traditional paper filing. All filing options have their pros and cons, and the best choice depends on your financial situation and comfort level with tax regulations. By taking these steps now, you’ll set yourself up for an easier tax season. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle tax season, ensuring a stressfree and successful filing experience. So, get a head start, and make tax season smooth in 2024!

IMPROVING WHAT MATTERS Georgia’s Own has been committed to a “people helping people” philosophy by serving our members’ financial needs and giving back to our communities, specifically through the Georgia’s Own Foundation, with a mission of “Improving what matters.” What better time to make positive changes and contribute to the well-being of our communities, as we step into the new year! Volunteering is a powerful way to give back, fostering a sense of connection and making a tangible impact on the lives of others. If you’re looking for ways to make a difference, here are some ideas on how to get involved in your community: ANIMAL SHELTERS If you have a love for animals, volunteer at a local animal shelter. Help is often needed with feeding, walking, and caring for animals awaiting adoption. Your time and attention can significantly improve the lives of these furry friends. COMMUNITY EVENTS AND FESTIVALS Events and festivals not only bring people together but also contribute to the overall vibrancy of the community! Getting involved in organizing or assisting will help you get to know others and ensure the success of these gatherings. ELDERLY CARE Reach out to retirement homes in your area to inquire about opportunities to spend time with the elderly. Many seniors face isolation, and your companionship can bring happiness and comfort. You might assist with

activities, read together, or simply engage in meaningful conversation. ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES Participating in tree planting, park clean-ups, or community garden projects not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also fosters a sense of community pride. LOCAL FOOD BANKS AND SHELTERS There are many organizations dedicated to providing food and shelter to those in need. Start by searching for volunteer opportunities supporting local food banks or shelters in your community. You can help pack food, serve meals, or assist with other tasks to ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities. MENTORING AND TUTORING PROGRAMS Share your knowledge and skills by volunteering as a mentor or tutor. Many schools and community centers have programs that connect volunteers with students who could benefit from extra support. Whether it’s helping with homework or offering guidance on career paths, your time and expertise can make a lasting impact. Let’s make a resolution to improve what matters and be agents of positive change in our communities. Volunteering not only benefits those in need but also enriches our own lives by fostering a sense of purpose, connection, and fulfillment. 3 TIPS TO GOAL SETTING IN THE NEW YEAR

Your fresh start can begin in 2024. Below are three tips to set and plan achievable goals:

BE SPECIFIC AND CLEAR

The most effective goals are those clearly defined with specific details. The more specific your goals, the easier it is to measure your progress and stay motivated throughout the year. By defining goals with clarity, it will help you create a plan of action. Instead of "I want to save money," specify, "I will save $10/week."

BREAK DOWN YOUR GOALS

Breaking down your goals into smaller, managable tasks or milestones will make your goals more achievable. It will allow you to track your progress more effectively. If you would like to excercise more, break it down into playing pickleball twice a week.

SET REALISTIC GOALS

Dream big they say! While it's essential to challenge yourself, it's equally important to set realistic and attainable goals. When setting a goal, keep in mind your current commitments, resources, and capabilities. Setting goals that are too ambitious may lead to frustration and burnout. This year try setting, planning, and tracking your goals. Reviewing and adjusting your goals quarterly can help you achieve your goals. Tracking your goals allows you to celebrate your achievements along the way and adjust to setbacks. Remember to adapt, evaluate, and continue working towards your goals throughout the year!

A TEENS GUIDE TO PERSONAL FINANCES Welcome to the exciting world of personal finance, where the decisions you make today can shape your financial future. Money talk might not be the most thrilling, but understanding the basics sooner than later will set you up for success. So, buckle up as we explore some key financial tips to help you navigate your personal finances! BUDGETING Creating a budget is like having a superhero sidekick for your finances. It helps you keep track of your income, expenses, and savings goals. Start by listing your income sources and then write down your regular expenses, like snacks, entertainment, and any subscriptions. Hopefully this will help you spend less than you’re earning! SAVING Saving money may sound like a snooze fest, but you’ll be thankful you did. Even small amounts add up over time. Determine a savings goal and set aside a portion of your income into your Georgia’s Own savings account. INVESTING Ever heard someone say their money works for them? That's the result of investing! It’s never too early to dip your toes into the investing pool. Consider talking to your parents or a financial advisor about investment opportunities for you! CREDIT Credit cards can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It’s crucial to understand how credit cards work and how to use them responsibly. Building good credit now will open doors for future opportunities, like getting a car loan or renting an apartment. There you have it—a crash course on taking charge of your finances. A strong financial foundation is something to be learned. Ask questions and seek advice from trusted adults. Check out georgiasown. org/blog for more financial tips and education.
