Lisburn Parking System – Five Years On

By Samantha Gregory

It has been over five years since the parking system complete with parking meters and traffic wardens came to Lisburn. There have been problems from the outset with many residents complaining that there is no leeway with traffic wardens and they feel they have to rush back to their cars. It was originally introduced in a bid to do the following: Increase efficiency and effectiveness of the existing onstreet parking spaces in the main shopping areas; Reduce congestion; Provide better opportunities for delivery vehicles to find a space that is convenient to the store they are delivering to; Short stays by vehicles which means more spaces available; What it created was a system that has ultimately put off a great many people from shopping in Lisburn at all, while the rest must constantly watch the clock so they don’t get ticketed. Shaun Fitzsimmons said, “They’re a joke. You always have to rush back to your car and you have no time to shop. If you are even two minutes late, a traffic warden is there with a ticket.” Many people are put off by this and are leaving their car at home,

which has been praised as being good for the environment. However it is not so easy for some people, Anne, a local hairdresser, said, “I have no choice when it comes to bringing my car as I live in Banbridge. I used to park outside when I went into work but now you are only allowed to park up to an hour. Now I park wherever I can find a space.”
