Coca-Cola bursaries presented to local youths

Pictured (from left) are Brian O’Connor, Chair, European Connected Health Alliance; Health Minister Edwin Poots; Lorraine Acheson, Outreach Manager, ECH Alliance and David Bingham, Chief Executive, Business Services Organisation.

Health Minister Edwin Poots has said that a new data sharing service will help to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Northern Ireland. The Minister was speaking as he launched the Honest Broker Service, which will put in place a better and more secure process for the sharing of unidentifiable health and social care data within the HSC family. This means that patient data can be shared in a more efficient way, while keeping that individual’s identity anonymous. Making the announcement at the quarterly meeting of the NI Connected Health Ecosystem, which was held in Lisburn, the Minister said the new service, established within the Business Services Organisation (BSO), would ultimately improve the overall health of the people of Northern Ireland. He said: “The launch of the Honest Broker Service marks another milestone in the advancement of the connected health and prosperity agenda. The service puts in place better and more secure processes for the sharing of unidentified health and social care data within the HSC family.

The successful recipients of the Lisburn City Council Coca-Cola Bursaries Scheme received their awards during a presentation at the Coca-Cola Visitor Centre. The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Margaret Tolerton and Ailish Forde , Public Affairs & Communications Director at CCHBC Northern Ireland, presented the bursary cheques to the lucky young people who received them to help them progress and develop their talents

and/or skills. Katie Wilson, Andrew McCrory, Lauren Dick, Chloe Terris, Ruth Steen and Caitriona Adams were the six young people who received a Lisburn City Council Coca-Cola Bursary Award this year. Councillor Margaret Tolerton, speaking about the bursaries, said: “This annual bursary scheme offers financial support to talented young people from the Lisburn area who would like to further develop their skills in a variety of activities. The quality of entries this year was impressive and I hope that the six recipients will use this bursary to

achieve their ambitions in a variety of disciplines from sport to music and art to community work. “It is heartening to see and in partnership with Coca-Cola be able to recognise the commitment and effort of young people in the Lisburn area; and experience the sense of community that they have developed. I would encourage them to make the most of the opportunities presented to them.” Ailish Forde, Public Affairs & Communications Director CCHBC Northern Ireland added: “As a local company, CocaCola HBC Northern Ireland is committed to genuine investment

in community initiatives and it is our great pleasure to again support the Lisburn City Council Bursary Awards, which focuses on young people. Congratulations to all those who were awarded bursaries and I wish you all every success in your future endeavours.” Through this scheme, the Council and Coca-Cola hope to support life-changing opportunities for the young people of the City.

“This new service clearly aligns with the aims of Transforming Your Care, allowing for a more patientcentred model of care by enabling healthcare professionals to access patient information from multiple sites across the healthcare setting. “In addition, it presents a real opportunity for researchers to make a valuable contribution to the future development of health and social care related policy in Northern Ireland. This could lead to economic benefits through increasing opportunities for job creation within this sector.”

Young people are the future of Lisburn and to be able to support them as they pursue their ambition and strive to become the best in the Hosted by the South Eastern sport they play, and the community Health and Social Care Trust, the NI Connected Health they work for is fantastic.

Ecosystem meeting brings together stakeholders from health and social care, patient groups, industry and academia, with the aim of transforming healthcare at the same time as creating economic benefits. The theme for the day was ‘Creating evidence that’s fit for purpose’, specifically exploring: What the 'right' evidence looks like from academic, business and clinical perspectives; Creating a model of evaluation that the industry can use to develop solutions for unmet clinical needs; The opportunity to harness healthcare analytics through the Honest Broker Service. Speaking to an audience of over 150 attendees from health and social care, industry, academia and patient groups, the Minister outlined the progress that has been made in terms of innovation. He said: “Last year, Northern Ireland was one of only thirteen regions to achieve 3-star Reference Site status through the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, which means that we are now seen as a forerunner in Europe in bringing about a higher quality of health and social care for the older population.” Minister Poots also highlighted the progress that had been made, a year since the publication of the Task and Finish Group’s report. He said: “There are clearly economic benefits to be gained from the health and social care sector. An Implementation Advisory Group, led by Brian O’Connor, has been established which will aim to make the Task and Finish Group’s original vision a reality and bring real economic benefits to the people of Northern Ireland. “It is clear that tremendous effort and energy has been devoted to the advancement of the broader Connected Health agenda over the past year. There have been some exciting developments and I look forward to seeing this momentum continue.”

Little Guy Toddles to Raise Money for Save the Children Liam Moran is planning on taking part in a 5K race to help raise money for Save the Children. While this is impressive in itself, what’s even more impressive is that Liam is only two years old. We spoke to his mum Carlie to find out more about this extraordinary young man. How did you become involved in the race and the Save the Children Charity? We decided that we were going to do a charity run this year after seeing so many of our friends fundraising for their runs on Facebook. Obviously we wanted something that would be fun for Liam so we had a Google to see what was on and found the colour run. At first the plan was just to take him along with us in his pushchair, but he is so energetic and loves walking so much so we had a think about it and decided that he could probably manage to toddle the distance on his own. So we decided to give it a try and put him down as our team captain. Save the Children is the official charity for the colour run this year so they are donating the registration fees that runners have to pay to the charity. However, with Liam being so little we didn’t have to pay a registration fee for him, so we decided to concentrate all of our fundraising efforts into getting people to sponsor him so that he can raise some money for this great charity himself. This is the first time that we have been involved in raising money for Save the Children but it’s such a wonderful cause and it just seemed like such a great fit with Liam being a child himself (the little guys have got to stick together). Also, as parents, it is a particularly poignant charity for us as it means so much to us to be able to keep Liam safe and healthy and happy. I can’t imagine anything more heartbreaking than seeing your child suffering and being completely helpless and unable to make it better. All children are

the same; they all need love and comfort, stability and security and to be safe, fed and warm. It is heartbreaking to know that there are so many children in the world (both at home and abroad) that suffer. Children are innocent and helpless, they cannot speak up for themselves and have no power to change their circumstances, they are completely reliant on the people around them to look after them and protect them. I think that’s one of the reasons that it’s so important to support charities like save the children, so that they can be their voice, work to make their lives better and provide them with hope and opportunities. Can you tell me a little about the race and what will happen on the day? The colour run (actually spelt color run) is an untimed 5km fun run which describes itself on its web pages as “the happiest 5k on the planet”. Volunteers are stationed at each kilometre and douse runners with coloured powder as they pass each colour station (e.g. blue station / pink station / etc) and ends with a big colour festival at the finish line. The race presents itself as being about fun and positivity and promoting healthy living (with 60% of participants being first time runners). The website states that the race is the now the single largest race series on the planet and was apparently featured on Nickelodeons worldwide day of play in October. Snyder, founder of The Color Run, is quoted as saying, “We call The Color Run the ‘Happiest 5K on the Planet’ because our events bring together friends and family in a unique, healthy, and fun environment.” The race is taking place all over

the UK and we are participating in the Belfast event, which is being held around the Titanic Quarter on the 23rd of August (and is still accepting registration for participants). On the day we will try to get there quite early so Liam can get used to the crowd before everyone sets off. We will try to position ourselves towards the back of the racers though so he can take his time at the starting line. We will all wear white so that we can get good and colourful during the race and take plenty of drinks and water (and a camera of course). Once the race starts the plan is pretty much just to let Liam toddle in his own time and enjoy himself, if he wants to stop and have a good play in the powder that’s fine, it will be awesome for him to finish on his own so we definitely don’t plan to rush him, after all its supposed to be fun! We are slightly concerned that he will get a bit obsessed with the first colour station and not want to move any further but

hopefully if we give him plenty of time to explore he will move on eventually! Is Liam excited about the race? Bless him, I don’t think Liam really has any idea what we’re letting him in for to be honest but I’m sure he will love it on the day. He’s seen the video on the website and got very excited; dancing to the music, clapping, shouting “yay” and “wow” and pretending to run. I’m sure on the day he will really enjoy himself and I’m sure he will be very proud of his achievement and the money that he has raised when he looks back on the event in the future and we show him the newspaper cuttings and pictures and explain to him how save the children could have used the money his sponsors donated. What is your target for the race? Our target for the race started out as £100 and we thought this was a realistic amount to try and

raise from friends and family in the couple of months that we had before the race. However, since setting his pages up on Facebook and Twitter, we have received some fantastic and generous support from people all over the world and actually managed to raise that amount in just over 100 hours! It was incredible and so lovely to see people that we didn’t even know sponsoring him and sharing the story. We’ve received great messages of support from the Kindness trust, save the children, save the children Northern Ireland and the health foundation Uganda. His fundraiser has also been shared around Facebook and Twitter updates have been retweeted by the color run, the suspended coffees movement and the Ulster star. As well as having updates favourited by Cheergive, Dare to donate, the color run UK and Louise Glover. It has been absolutely wonderful to have so many people and organisations getting behind the fundraiser and helping him to find sponsors and raise money for this

wonderful cause. We have now decided to put the fundraising target up to £250, but as family and friends have already made their donations we are now really relying on the generosity of other people to try and make this target. This is way we are so grateful to you for sharing the story and encouraging people to donate. Every penny that we can raise for this charity can really make a difference. No donation is too small and everything is greatly appreciated. A £5 donation is enough to pay for ten days worth of lifesaving food for a malnourished child. A £3 donation could pay for lifesaving treatment for eight children with diarrhoea. Donations can be made by texting LGUY99 followed by the sponsorship amount to 70070 or through our just giving pagehttps://www.justgiving.com/ littleguytoddles .

His Facebook account attracted thousands of followers. A huge football fan, even Glasgow Celtic football club joined his campaign. Sadly, he could not beat the illness and he passed away in a children’s hospice. Hailed as a fighter, over 1000 mourners showed up at his funeral. His family released a tweet saying, “Our beautiful amazing and much loved son Oscar James Knox

In a moving and wonderful tribute, thousands of people across the country released Chinese lanterns and lit candles in memory of Oscar. The City Hall in Belfast was lit up in blue and yellow for Team Oscar. Cancer affects one in three people. Oscar was just one shining example

Home from Home – CLIC Sargent CLIC Sargent NI is currently working on a project to build a ‘home from home’ for young people aged between 16 and 24 years old and their families. The home will be situated close to Belfast City Hospital and will provide free accommodation for families travelling to the hospital for cancer treatment. It is within walking distance of the centre.

A spokesperson for the group said, “Because the cancer centre is in Belfast it is difficult for families to travel there if they live in different areas of the country as well as being quite expensive.”

Hillsborough is named Best Kept Small Town 2014 at all-Ireland award

Hillsborough, County Down won Best Kept Small Town at the 2014 Ireland’s Best Kept Towns awards. Pictured at the event on Tuesday 24th June are (L-R): Doreen Muskett, Chair of Northern Ireland Amenity Council, Mark Gregg, Parks & Cemeteries Manager, Lisburn City Council, Mark H Durkan, Minister for the Environment, Lesley Kirk, Business Operations Manager, Lisburn City Coucil and Nessa O’Callaghan, Hillsborough and District Committee.

HILLSBOROUGH has been named Ireland’s Best Kept Small Town 2014 at a ceremony on SS Nomadic, Titanic Quarter Belfast on Tuesday 24th June. The County Down town beat stiff competition from towns and villages the length and breadth of Ireland, with Aughrim, County Wicklow, Moira, County Down and Blackrock, County Louth all finalists in the same category. Three awards in total went to locations in Northern Ireland, with Enniskillen, County Fermanagh winning the overall Best Kept award in addition to Best Kept Large Urban Centre. Emly, Tipperary South won the Best Kept Village category, while Maynooth in County Kildare won the Best Kept Large Town category. The finalists were drawn from the winners of the 2013 Best Kept Awards in Northern Ireland and TidyTowns in the south of Ireland. Nessa O’Callaghan, Hillsborough and District Committee, said: “It is absolutely wonderful to win this award. It wouldn’t be possible without the close co-operation of the operational maintenance team at Lisburn City Council and a team of volunteers who work tirelessly on environmental projects, such as our fairy garden in the play park and our beautiful floral displays. “We’re very proud to have won the award and thank everyone who tries to make a difference by planting their window boxes and keeping the town clean and tidy,” she added. Doreen Muskett MBE, Chair of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council, the body that organises the Best Kept Awards, said: “The competition is designed to reward those who take great pride in their communities, those who work tirelessly to make their surroundings a nicer place to

work, live and play in. “My sincere congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients. The panel of esteemed judges had a very difficult task in comparing and selecting the eventual winners, which is testament to the stunning towns and villages we are lucky enough to have here. “I am delighted that Enniskillen and Hillsborough have been recognised amongst Ireland’s most beautiful spots. “It has been five years since the overall winner was awarded to a town in Northern Ireland so it is particularly lovely to see Enniskillen celebrate this terrific achievement,” she added. Speaking at the ceremony, Mark H Durkan MLA, Minister for the Environment said: “When we discuss the environment, it is easy to think of the vast green spaces of rural Ireland, and so often urban areas can be overlooked. One of the most important aspects of this competition I feel, is the urban theme that resonates throughout its projects. A healthy mix is achieved each year by projects, ranging from small rural village settings, to towns and cities. This blend of diversity helps ensure that all communities are touched by the projects undertaken year after year.” All entrants were marked against very strict criteria that included cleanliness, the outward appearance of buildings, the presentation of roads and public facilities and the natural environment. Winner announced from the Lisburn heat of the Face of Exhibit contest

Zoe Benson, aged 18, from Lisburn has been chosen as the winner of the Lisburn heat of the Face of Exhibit competition, which was held in the Exhibit, Bow Street Mall store on the 14th June.

She is now in with a chance to front Exhibit’s advertising campaigns for a year and could also win a modelling contact with ACA Models, £500 of Exhibit vouchers, and two return flights departing from Belfast City to Faro, Malaga or Palma courtesy of Aer Lingus. Zoe, who is a student at Hunterhouse College, said; “I’m so excited to represent Lisburn in the final! I decided to enter because I’m interested in fashion and like the fact that Exhibit is a local fashion brand.

Pictured are the speakers at the recent 'Check Today for Tomorrow' health and social care conference at Lagan Valley Island. (l-r) Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mrs Joan Christie, OBE; Councillor James Baird, Chairman of the Council's Strategic Policy Committee; Ms Aisling Owens, Lisburn Enterprise Organisation; the Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Margaret Tolerton; Ms Maureen Bruce, SEHSCT; Mrs Diane Dodds MEP; Ms Hilda Francey, SEHSCT; Mr Stephen Malcolm, Equality Officer at Lisburn City Council and Dr Anne Kouvonen, Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy (Health) at QUB.

The theme for this year’s health and social care conference, organised by Lisburn City Council, was ‘Check Today for Tomorrow’, which was aimed primarily at women within the Lisburn City Council area.

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust partnered with the Council to plan this event that focused on health with exhibitors from statutory, voluntary and charitable organisations present. The Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mrs Joan Christie, OBE and Diane Dodds MEP were in attendance and spoke at the conference. Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Margaret Tolerton, welcoming the delegates, said: “I am delighted that the Council has continued to organise conferences such as this to educate the local community on important issues, which in previous years included disability and supporting independence. “Women’s health covers a broad range of conditions from reflexology to breast feeding and mental health to knowledge of stroke symptoms. The speakers at this year’s conference covered a wide range of subjects including local community-based health initiatives, remote diagnosis, diabetes and the impact of health on businesses. The most poignant talk was from local lady Una Crudden who spoke about the

very emotive issue of living with terminal ovarian cancer and how important it is to know the signs and seek early intervention. “The key messages from the conference are do not undervalue health checks and that prevention and early detection save lives. Health is linked to many areas of our lives including employment, educational background and the area in which you live. So I would encourage all residents of Lisburn to make an appointment with their doctor if they notice any change in their health,” she concluded. Research has identified that there are notable differences in people’s health when those living in rural areas are compared with urban areas and deprived areas with affluent areas. Differences have also been identified across the Health Trusts as some services are only available in certain areas, which needs to be standardised as much as possible within the health budget. Councillor James Baird, Chairman of the Council’s Strategic Policy Committee, speaking about the conference, said: “I am privileged to have been the Chairman at the initiation of this event.

Health concerns us all and while the event was primarily focusing on women I was pleased that the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust spoke about a local men’s health initiative; and that the advice from the majority of exhibitors was appropriate for both genders. I am pleased that the conference did not just focus on medical treatments but how each individual has to accept responsibility for their own health. “Over recent times the health service through the Public Health Agency has run advertising campaigns promoting the importance of eating healthily, exercising for at least 30 minutes a day and the signs of a stroke. As the elderly population increases in years to come it is important that everyone maximises how they choose to live their lives in those future years. “On behalf of the Council I would like to thank all the speakers and exhibitors who took part in the ‘Check Today for Tomorrow’ conference. I would encourage all those who took part to keep up the good work they do within the Lisburn community,” said Councillor Baird.

“It feels incredible to know I’m going to the final of the competition later this year!”, she added. She will go on to the final at Victoria Square on 13th September where she will compete against 16 other finalists from heats that will take place across the country over the coming weeks.

Chris Rankin, Head of E-commerce at Exhibit said; “Lisburn does it again! We have had two other Lisburn ladies who won the Belfast and Newry heats but Zoe is lucky enough to win the heat in her own hometown.”

“We still have many more heats to take place in stores across the country. Any Lisburn locals who still want to take part are welcome to travel to one of the upcoming heats for their chance to join the other Lisburn natives Kathryn, Kelsea and now Zoe at the finale in September.” Heat judge and Director of ACA Models, Alison Clarke added; “Congratulations to Zoe. She really caught the attention of the judges with her combination of beauty, style and confidence.

“She is a sure sign of the great undiscovered potential models still to be found in the rest of the contest.” The competition is still open to entrants with heats taking place across the country in Exhibit stores, for further details of heat locations and dates please visit www.exhibitshops.com.

new asset at their school. “This new garden area is wonderful – such an attractive additional feature to St Joseph’s grounds,” she said. “The council’s Renewing the Routes team worked with the school to develop this beautiful garden over the last year which has brightened up the space for the children and also linked in with the school’s curriculum to enable the children to discover more about the environment. “The landscaping scheme also complements other environmentally themed works the school has recently undertaken including the vegetable garden which was funded by the council’s Community Garden’s team.” St Joseph’s PS Principal Mairead Weir

said: “The children are absolutely delighted with their new garden at the front of the school. There is a flower bed for every class to learn about the planting of different flowers and shrubs. This widens their knowledge of ecology and the importance of caring for the environment. “The beds are also made up of a selection of international plants to reflect and celebrate diversity in our school as we have children from many different cultures.” The project complements a number of commercial and boundary improvements completed under the Renewing the Routes programme on the Grosvenor Road. The Renewing the Routes

programme involves working with local residents, businesses and agencies to bring out the best in arterial routes and neighbourhoods in Belfast. Since 2004, the council has invested £6.6 million through the programme to improve shopping areas and green gateways, introduce public art and celebrate diverse heritage. Funding for the current programme is part of the council’s £150 million Investment Programme for the city and supports the council’s tourism and economic development objectives. Weird News from around the World SWISS ALPS: Cow on a steep slate roof CHENGDU: Flight attendants learn kung fu

A cyclist touring the Swiss Alps could not believe his eyes when he saw a cow on the steep roof of a farmhouse. Rolf Steiner quickly grabbed his camera to take this photograph of the cow precariously placed, near Bern. “I couldn’t believe my eyes and had to look three times to make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. A cow on the roof,” he said. The animal had been walking on a road behind the property when it decided that fresh fields and pastures new might well be available on the other side of the

roof. But instead of going round, it jumped from the road onto the roof and clambered up to the top, before slithering down the other side and stopping when it got near the guttering. Realising there was nothing exciting there, it then turned round and went the other way where it successfully jumped back to the ground and went back to its meadow. The cow broke several tiles with its hooves before it managed to find its way back down. Farmer Dieter Mueller, said:

“She always was one of my most cantankerous beasts, always wanting to do it her way, not mine or the herd’s.

Unruly air passengers would be wise not to mix it with flight attendants on Chinese planes any time soon.

“I tried to chuck a broom at her to get her off, and put a ladder there but I didn’t use it, as I was worried she’d fall on top of me.

They are among the clients of a new kung fu master teaching them the ancient martial art.

“She would have stayed up there for eternity if she had wanted to. I tried to coax her off when I first saw her but she wouldn’t budge. “She had to do things in her own sweet time. And I am left with the bill for replacing the tiles she smashed.”

A university student has invented a revolutionary adult scooter that folds up to the size of an A4 piece of paper.

George Mabey’s design works by linking parts of aluminium with a cable which, when tightened, pulls them together to support an adult’s weight.

What’s more, the handy device - which is so small it can fit in a handbag - is being made after impressing judges and could cost around £1,000. The lightweight scooter, at less than 5kg, is the first prototype

The Resort Canino Can Jane, at Roca del Valles, is designed to be the right depth for dogs of all shapes and sizes and includes a dog slide, as well as extra tough inflatables for dogs. Manager Federico Cano said he had seen a resort that allowed dogs to swim alongside humans, and he decided to take it one stage further by making a resort that was only for dogs.

He said: “I don’t see why dogs should not be allowed to enjoy a swim when the weather gets hot just like people can - especially here in Spain where it gets really hot. “I designed it so that it was a little bit like a beach with a gradual slope that is exactly what dogs appreciate. “There were a few other technical challenges. For example the filter system has to handle rather more here than might be usual but we’ve overcome the problem and can guarantee a great experience for

dogs and one that is clean and healthy for owners.” He said that once the dogs get used to it the biggest problem is often getting them out the water, adding: “The best thing is that they really burn off a lot of energy coming here.” He added it was also great exercise for older dogs that sometimes find it harder to run around, but can still comfortably swim for long periods of time. “Many people don’t realise the dogs really love the water but they often don’t get the chance to enjoy splashing around,” he said.

The college, Southwest Airline College, signed a deal with Tu Tengyao and his school to turn flight personnel into mini Bruce Lees. He is the son of Ye Wen, a legendary kung fu master, who developed and passed down Wing Chun kung fu. Tu said: “The threat of terrorism is

increasing and so personnel must really be equipped to deal with life and death situations at thousands of feet up in the air. “It is impossible to use firearms in such places so people must rely on their wits and their strengths. I hone them into becoming adept martial art practitioners.” According to the airline college, Wing Chun kung fu is “quite suitable to be practised in narrow and confined spaces and so it’s perfect for air crew”.

He said: “I was amazed at winning such a brilliant competition, which I was proud to take part in.

NORTH YORKSHIRE: Mashed spud causes road chaos A lorry blocked a busy main road in North Yorkshire recently after shedding its load of instant mashed potato. A section of the A64 was covered in mash close to Whitwell on the Hill, near Malton, causing cars to skid. A police spokesman said: “Instant mash is covering the road and cars have skidded as a result of the mash swelling up.” Police and the Highways Agency closed the road in both directions

CHINA: Farmer forces BRISTOL: Scientists fruit to grow in shape of babies prove beer goggles do exist

China is taking on fruit flavoured jelly babies by leaving out the jelly - and simply offering fruit babies.

ginseng into the shape of a baby Buddha before making the human moulds.

Nanchang farmer De He has been forcing fruit into moulds that causes it to grow into the shape of babies.

He said: “Who can resist a beautiful baby? And who could resist a lovely piece of fruit that looks like one? It occurred to me I would be on to a winner if I could market fruit in the form of perfectly formed, innocent babies and that has proven to be the case. Local supermarkets cannot get enough of the stuff.” De wants to expand his fruit moulding business to make some

De has cashed in on an old Chinese fairy tale about a magic fruit in the shape of infants. The tale says that whoever eats a magic fruit attains immortality. He first practised by growing

super-sized edible babies out of watermelons and pumpkins. He added: “Parents are particularly happy. Junk food and sweet consumption is on the rise in China and making many children obese. Getting them to eat fruit in a fun way is important and they love eating the babyfruit.” The fruits have been getting a lot of attention in shops, but at £3 each they are ten times the price of the normal shaped fruit.

Scientists at Bristol University say they have proved that ‘beer goggles’ really do exist. Researchers at the university’s Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group conducted laboratory tests to gauge whether alcohol changed people’s perceptions of what is attractive. Volunteers drank either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic placebo drink and were then shown images of 20 male faces, 20 female faces

MINNESOTA: Mum turns stairs into indoor slide A Minnesota mum has invented a gadget that converts staircases into indoor slides to make going downstairs a lot more fun.

Trisha Cleveland’s SlideRider comprises a series of foldable mats that can transform stairs into a slide within minutes. She has teamed up with the Quirky website which works with amateur inventors to try and bring their ideas to market, to build a prototype. Quirky’s online community helped

Chris McGrath, Kevin Cobbe and Ian McNamara quit their respective jobs and began their epic journey, which started in their home city Dublin, at the start of 2013 and went on to Irish dance in 23 countries. They graced iconic locations such as the Chichen Itza in

Researchers said attractiveness ratings were higher for all three image types among the alcohol group compared to the placebo group. The study leaders said this confirmed the beer goggle hypthesis which claims that people become more attractive to the opposite sex after a few drinks. Now the Bristol team has extended the research into the more realistic

setting of a pub. It is conducting tests over four nights at three pubs in Bristol, the Green Man, the Portcullis and the Victoria. Researcher Olivia Maynard said: “It’s a bit of fun, but there is a serious message. “If alcohol does change perceptions of attractiveness then that could be a factor in the kind of risky behaviour you see when people are drunk, such as unprotected sex.”

Police have released a recording of a woman who dialled 999 to complain about the amount of sprinkles on her ice cream. The caller, who was not named by West Midlands Police, contacted emergency operators during a row with the owner of an ice cream van. During the minute-long call, the woman told the operator: “It doesn’t seem like much of an emergency but it is a little bit.” “I’ve ordered an ice cream and he’s put bits on one side and none

on the other,” she said. “He’s refusing to give me my money back and saying I’ve got to take it like that.” Police released the recording to press home the message that the 99 service should not be misused. Ch Supt Jim Andronov said: “If someone is trying to get through to report a genuine life-or-death emergency, then a minute is a very long time to wait. “I cannot stress enough that the 999 number is for emergencies only.”

Boyzone and The Kaiser Chiefs are just two of the big names due to perform at this year’s Feile Belfast.

Comprised of five young Irish vocalists who all grew up in the North side of Dublin, Ronan, Keith, Stephen, Mikey and Shane – better known as Boyzone – embraced the second half of the 1990s in true classic pop style. Six of those songs made it to number one, establishing Boyzone as the first ever Irish pop group to top the British charts so regularly. After a six year break, Boyzone reformed in 2008 for a 29 date arena tour of Ireland & the UK and release of ‘Back Again…No Matter What’, scoring another Top Five hit with the new song ‘Love You Anyway.’ The band dedicated their 2010 album ‘Brother’ to Stephen Gately and subsequently toured Ireland and UK. Star Wars Episode 7: Sal Hanvey – Nostalgia Queen So, the camera’s have started rolling on the next Star Wars movie and we now know that some of the movie is to be shot here in Northern Ireland! Maybe I should phone up and try and get a part? Well, that’s how actress Bronagh Gallagher ended up in Episode 1, I remember her telling me during an interview a few years ago. So, what do we know about the new Star Wars film, well Harrison Ford has been injured and out of action for a few weeks, Mark Hamill is also back and so is Carrie Fisher who is promising to her famous Princess Leia hair do. We also know that Chewbacca is also set to return alongside R2D2 and C3PO. JJ Abrams is on directing duties, so we should be in for a treat. The storyline takes place 35 years after Return of the Jedi after the Ewok celebration on Endor after the second Death Star was destroyed. Anyway, mark December 18th, 2015 in your calendars, because that’s when the new Star Wars will premiere in cinemas.

Christopher Lee – Metal Knight

Staying with a kind of Star Wars theme and Sir Christopher Lee has released a new heavy metal minialbum. The Hammer Horror Legend and Lord of the Rings star, who has just celebrated his 92nd birthday has worked with several heavy metal artists in recent years

Metal Knight features seven tracks, including two covers of songs from the musical Man of La Mancha, based on the character Don Quixote. His previous films Dracula, The Wicker Man and The Man with the Golden Gun have all inspired metal songs. Last year saw Lee become the

Batman and Robin

oldest performer to chart in the US after his version of ‘Jingle Hell’ reached number 18 on the Billboard countdown. He also released Heavy Metal Christmas back in 2012, featuring metal versions of the carols ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Little Drummer Boy’. Metal Knight is out now!

Yes, I have heard all the Batman and Robin jokes over the years but recently I did ended up at a photo shoot with Batman! The event was to promote the Oscar Knox Memorial Fundraiser in association with the Northern Ireland Children’s Hopsice. I will be on hosting duties at Hagues Bar in Lisburn on August 14th introducing many great acts who are supporting these worthwhile charities. Pictured as Batman is Michael McCabe.

One album that hasn’t been out of my CD player recently is Nostalgia Queen by local singer/songwriter Sal Hanvey.

Following her recent launch with an amzing nine piece band at the Black Box in Belfast, Sal’s album has been picking up lots of airplay and getting some great reviews including one in particular from 60’ s singing legend Donovan.

Donovan, who’s hits include Jennifer Juniper and Mellow Yellow said, “Sal is quite a gal. She blends jazz with her songs in a

fresh way.

Rising from her musical influences, she has found her own voice. Sal is Ireland’s new lady to listen and watch”. Recorded in Northern Ireland, Nostalgia Queen was mastered in London by Jon Astley who has worked with The Who, Led Zeppelin, Jools Holland, George

Harrison and Tori Amos. Amy Winehouse’s Saxophone player Aaron Liddard also plays on the album, which features eight original songs and two covers – Florence and The Machine’s Heavy In Your Arms and Joni Mitchell’s All I Want. Insured to Travel?

Almost 50 per cent of consumers uninsured to travel

HOLIDAYMAKERS WARNED AGAINST IMPORTING DISEASE

Bringing back novel or exotic food and plant products from some countries could bring serious disease and unwanted pests which may threaten the health of our local agricultural livestock and crops. That was the message from Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill as she visited George Best Belfast City Airport, to view the portal inspection process in place to discover illegal imports of food and plant products.

Ahead of the busy summer holiday period the Consumer Council is reminding consumers of the importance of taking out travel insurance. Travel insurance provides protection against the impact of something going wrong when you are on holiday or travelling but our research has shown that almost half of consumers surveyed who had travelled in the last five years, did not take travel insurance. Speaking about the importance of travel insurance Scott Kennerley, Head of Transport Policy at theConsumer Council explains “When travel plans are disrupted it can have a significant financial and emotional impact on consumers.

With the summer holiday season almost underway, getting travel insurance can often be a last minute exercise. However, getting the right travel insurance policy for your holiday is essential and it is important to know what your policy covers and what it does not cover. “For example, given the number of Northern Ireland consumers that travel from airports in the Republic of Ireland we would ask consumers to check and make sure travel from airports in the Republic

of Ireland is covered. Some policies place limits on the type of cover provided if the departure airport is not in the UK.” Scott concluded “Many consumers have citied the main reason for taking out travel insurance is to cover medical expenses if they become ill whilst travelling. However travel insurance can provide many additional benefits such as cover for missed flights departures/connections or for the loss, theft or damage to your belongings or luggage.”

To find out more about travel insurance, get your free copy of the Consumer Council’s ‘Travel Insurance Factsheet’, which can be downloaded from the Consumer Council website

www.consumercouncil.org.uk or is available by contacting the Consumer Council on

During 2013, over 1029 kg of illegal food products were seized at the two main local airports, and in recent years, consignments of illegal imports of food products of non-EU origin have been seized from over 44 countries worldwide. This year the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Portal Inspection Branch have deployed a "detector dog" to sniff luggage as it arrives off the plane to look for illegal imports. Minister O’Neill said: "Holidaymakers should remember that there are basic rules on what they can and can't bring back with them from their trip. There are restrictions on foodstuffs and plants which can be brought back from countries outside the north of Ireland. No meat or dairy products from outside the EU are allowed. "People travelling through local ports or airports should check the rules on food and plant imports before they leave home. Illegal goods will be seized and destroyed, and having to conduct these checks may delay

passengers. Holidaymakers also risk prosecution and a fine. "Epizootic diseases threaten our animal health status, and if a major disease enters the north of Ireland, trade and jobs will be at

risk." To keep illegal imports of animals, animal products and plant products, including fish, meat and vegetables out, the Portal Inspection Branch maintain a permanent inspection presence at all main ports and airports.

Holidaying in France

Road safety charity the IAM is offering motoring tips from Britain’s top advanced driver, Peter Rodger. This month, he is giving some essential advice to those driving in France this summer. Every year, around 17 million British nationals visit France, many by car. Here are the IAM’s top tips to ensure you’re on the right side of the law: * In France all drivers and motorcyclists (excluding mopeds) need to carry a breathalyser kit, with two disposable breathalysers. The breathalyser must meet the

NF standards (similar to the BSI here in the UK) and carry an NF certification. The French government have indefinitely cancelled the fine fornon compliance but you still have to have one. * Remember too, that the drink drive limit in France is lower than in the UK, 50mg compared to 80mg per 100ml of blood. If you’re driving, don’t drink, and beware the morning after effect. * On-the-spot fines or ‘deposits’ in France are severe. An official receipt should always be issued. Vehicles parking contrary to

regulations may be towed away and impounded.

* Holders of EU driving licenses exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h will have their licences confiscated on the spot by the police. * You are required to carry a warning triangle, reflective jacket, and convert your headlamps when driving in France. It is recommended that you carry spare light bulbs if you can fit them easily. * Driving on the right hand side of the road on unknown routes can be rather challenging. Take regular breaks, and always have a rest if you’re getting sleepy.

Exclusively engineered for Mazda by Alpine, the fully integrated, high resolution system features forty six European country maps, twenty-nine different languages, Bluetooth and USB connectivity,

an integrated CD, radio and DVD player with a 50:50 split screen allowing for the simultaneous viewing of two input sources, and customisable user profile settings for each driver.

Skoda Voted Taxi ‘Drivers Choice’ at the 2014 Taxi Awards Roz Purcell pictured at the announcement that ŠKODA has won the 'DriversChoice' category at the 2014 Irish Taxi Driver Federation Industry awards. There are currently 14,000 full time and an additional 8,500 part time Taxi drivers in Ireland. This accolade reflects the opinions of Industry professionals who truly value quality vehicles which serve to provide quality, reliability, durability and comfort. Commenting on the results, John Donegan, Brand Director, ŠKODA Ireland said: "We are delighted with this incredible result which follows the Octavia topping a value for money poll in a recent car survey by the

consumer magazine Which. These awards are a testament to the reliability and longevity of ŠKODA vehicles."

* A child sitting in the front passenger seat must be at least 10 years old (or a baby up to 9 months in a rear-facing child seat).

50km speed limit that continues until you pass the village name sign with a red bar across it and a black border signifying the village boundary and end of speed limit.

* Remember the speed limits in France are different to the UK, and unlike here they change when it rains, so make sure you know them before you go. * While radar speed camera detectors are legal in the UK, in France they are illegal whether or not you are using them. This legislation includes satnav systems which show speed camera information. * Many ‘N’ (main) roads and local authority ‘D’ and ‘C’ roads and a village name sign with a red border all signify the start of a

* Always exit on the right side so you don’t revert to driving on the left. * IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: “The school holidays are fast approaching, and many people will be driving on the continent this summer. Driving abroad can be very different to driving at home, but preparation as always is the key. Make sure your car is fit for the journey, plan your route in advance, including fuel stops, and remember to check up all the rules for driving in France before you go.”

New guide to serve half a million hikes in the Belfast Hills A staggering half a million hikes are now undertaken each year in the Belfast Hills, according to the Belfast Hills Partnership. The increased popularity among users brought Belfast Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon to Belfast Castle to help launch The Belfast Hills Partnership’s recreation guide today. The 40-page publication promotes the availability of walking, running, cycling, orienteering, geocaching and other outdoor activities in the Belfast Hills. It shows how to access the public sites and includes maps, trails, grades of walks and cycling routes. It also aims to encourage healthy activities for users of the hills as well as family fun in the outdoors. The Heritage Lottery Fund, Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), DARD and Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland are among the agencies that funded the booklet. Cave Hill Country Park, which is managed by Belfast City Council is

one of the most popular locations for visitors to the hills above the city. “With well over half a million hikes undertaken in the Belfast Hills each year, the Belfast Hills are more popular than ever,” said Belfast Hills Partnership manager Jim Bradley. Mr Bradley said the guide would go a long way in helping promote the health of the people living in Belfast, Lisburn and in areas such as Newtownabbey and Antrim and urged people not to be put off by the term ‘hills’. “A wide range of paths and routes are available – from a virtually flat 400 metre path at Carnmoney Hill pond, to hiking the seven-mile boundaries of Divis and the Black Mountain across blanket bog and upland health with elevations up to 377 metres (1,236ft). “Getting the people of Belfast into this area of outstanding beauty, and promoting the health benefits of the great outdoors, form key aims of the Partnership.

“The guide also promotes sustainable tourism and we hope it will help the many visitors to the city coming to view the views from the Belfast Hills,” he said. Belfast Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon said: “The hills around Belfast provide an iconic view of the city and they are a major attraction for locals and visitors alike. Whether it is that first glimpse of Napoleon’s nose as the ferry glides up Belfast Lough or the marvellous views provided by Divis and Black mountains, their environmental beauty calls to a wide audience who regularly hike or bike them. This guide, which encourages even more people to enjoy their attractions in a responsible and environmentally considerate way, will prove very valuable.” The guide can be picked up from libraries, local tourist offices in the area of the Belfast Hills, Visit Belfast or by contacting the Belfast Hills Partnership on 02890 603466 orsa info@belfasthills.org

Rugby star Ferris visits Old Warren Primary School

Ulster and Ireland rugby legend, Stephen Ferris paid a surprise visit to pupils at Old Warren Primary School in Lisburn recently. Ferris, who is currently out of action with an ankle injury, took time out of his busy rehabilitation schedule to pass on some rugby tips, pose for photos and sign autographs. The visit was arranged by Ulster Rugby's Community Rugby Coach, Roy Lawton, who is responsible for the growth of rugby in the Lisburn area. Roy is currently delivering six week programmes to P4-P6 pupils, many of whom had no prior rugby experience. Principal, Sean Campbell was delighted with the visit and confessed that as well as naming their main hall 'Ferris Hall' after Stephen, they've even called one of their house teams Stephen Ferris House. The coaching sessions from Lawton have been made possible due to the generous support of the NI Executive and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure through the 'Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Sport' programme.
