Dogs that are lost or are available to be rehomed and are in the care of the Council can now be viewed on the Lisburn City Council facebook page. Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chair of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, speaking about the initiative, said: “It is great news that social media has the potential to not only reunite owners with their pet dogs but also to provide dogs with a loving new home. “When dogs are collected by the Council Dog Wardens photographs will be placed on both the Council website and facebook page within 24 hours to allow the Council every opportunity to give the respective dogs a happy homecoming. The Council is committed to ensuring that all dogs within the Lisburn area are well looked after; and it is very pleased to use social media to reach as many residents as possible.”

Stray and unwanted dogs are kept in the Council Dog Pound on the Altona Road for a minimum of five days before either being directly rehomed or being sent to an animal sanctuary for rehoming. Councillor Jenny Palmer added: “I would like to remind residents that owning a dog means taking responsibility not only for giving it food, water, exercise, and attention though these are all very important. You also need to ensure that your dog is microchipped and licensed and that when out for that all important walk you clean up any of your dogs mess. scheme. Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, said: “Lisburn City Council hopes that local businesses, churches and community groups will support the Safe City campaign. By achieving Gold Charter status the awareness of domestic violence and abuse has increased among council officers and elected members. Should it become apparent that a member of staff is affected by abuse, support can be put in place within the workplace.” Developed by social enterprise Onus, ‘Safe Place’ provides information on local support services; and the ‘Safe Employer’ initiative assures any employee experiencing abuse in their home can be sure that their workplace will provide a Safe Place for them to access support. Training and resources are provided to employers supporting these initiatives. Colette Stewart, Onus Business Manager, explained why Lisburn should be a Safe City: “One in four women and one in nine men

will experience domestic abuse at some stage during their lifetime. Organisations such as Women’s Aid, Victim Support and the PSNI are doing everything they can to support those living with abuse, but we believe that everyone can do something. For example, the Safe Place initiative has been effective in getting the message out that domestic abuse is common and that support is available locally. “It is effectively supported by small businesses such as hairdressers and shops, through to major organisations such as the PSNI, the Northern Health and Social Care Trust and the MoD. We believe that we need to recognise that domestic abuse won’t disappear from our community unless we address it; and everyone can make a very clear statement that Lisburn is a Safe City where abuse will not be hidden.” Other organisations that have supported the initiatives to make Lisburn a Safe City include the PSNI, Ministry of Defence (MoD), Youth Justice Agency, Victim Support, libraries and a wide range

of businesses, with many more expressing an interest. Barbara Porter, Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Senior Officer with the Public Health Agency agreeing with all comments made, added: “It is important that our businesses here in Lisburn recognise the important part they play in making information on how to get help accessible to everyone. Through the Invest in Health Profit in Business Partnership working together we can let everyone living, visiting and shopping in Lisburn know it is a Safe City.” For further information on how to tackle this issue in your organisation, please visit www.onustraining.co.uk for further information on the range of initiatives to support you, or contact 028 2563 2136 Ext 28. Anyone dealing with domestic violence can access support by calling the 24hr Domestic and Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 802 1414. In October 2013 Health Minister Edwin Poots MLA and Olympian Dame Mary Peters jointly opened Laganview’s gym. The community gym is one of the key elements in a new healthy living initiative for people within the Lisburn area, which will be led by Resurgam, to improve the health and wellbeing of the whole community and reduce health inequalities where these exist. The gym is jointly funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Resurgam Community Development Trust and will offer the people in the area an opportunity to try a wide range of activities such as cycling, rowing and weight training. The gym forms part of an innovative programme to respond to a number of issues identified in the ‘The Best for Every Child’ research report studying deprived areas of Lisburn and published in 2012. These pointed to the need to tackle long-term poor health and quality of life across the population as a whole.

The development of the community gym, which will be a part of this initiative, will offer a number of exercise stations which will provide a mix of cardiovascular, strength and toning workouts. At the launch Chief Executive of the PHA Dr Eddie Rooney said: “The Public Health Agency is delighted to support this community gym in the heart of Old Warren. This is exactly the kind of local action that the PHA is keen to support, in order to promote healthier living. Together with the Resurgam Trust, over the past year we have developed a major work programme to address needs in this area. This new initiative represents a milestone in collaborative working to improve the health and wellbeing of the whole community.”

The gym is open Monday- Friday 8.30am-9.30pm and 9.30am-2pm on a Saturday. To book your induction please contact 07599925372. Check out www.facebook.com/ laganviewcommunitygym

Hillsborough’s Spring Rural Crime a priority is all about the planting for both PCSP and PSNI Lisburn PCSP in partnership with PSNI have organised an event to provide both the farming and rural community with information to address concerns on rural crime, safety around the home and health and wellbeing.

The event is being held in Hillsborough Research Farm on Thursday 13th March from 7pm 10pm. Rural crime and the vulnerability of people living in rural areas have been at the forefront of media attention over recent weeks. Lisburn PCSP is very keen to work with the farming and rural community, in partnership with the local police to help reduce the fear of rural crime and offer practical assistance and advice to rural dwellers. The Partnership is also keen to ensure that both the farming and rural community are aware of what the police are doing to combat crime and how these residents can become involved in local initiatives to improve their safety.

Present at the Spring Planting in Hillsborough are: back row (l-r) Jim Larmour, Gardener; Andrew Greer, Gardener; Mark Gregg, Plants Manager and Sheila Benham, Hillsborough Village Committee. Front row (l-r) Dawn Mitchell, Hillsborough Village Committee; Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chairwoman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee and Nessa O’Callaghan, Hillsborough Village Committee.

With spring around the corner Lisburn City Council and Hillsborough Village Committee are starting to plant the bulbs in what they hope will once again be awarding winning floral displays.

Last year was a resounding floral success for the Council as Hillsborough village collected a Silver Gilt award at Britain in Bloom for the second year; was runner up in the Ulster in Bloom ‘Large Village’ category; and won two awards at the 2013 NI Amenity Council Awards with Winner of Best Kept Large Village and Overall Winner. Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, speaking about the spring planting, said:

“I would love 2014 to be another successful year for the Council in terms of award recognition for its commitment to visually stunning towns and villages. I am delighted to say that January got off to a good start when I heard that Hillsborough has been selected as a finalist in the

2014 Britain in Bloom Finals.

“I am delighted to have been able to work with both the Council staff and the members of the Hillsborough Village Committee to plant floral beds and displays throughout Hillsborough in time for spring blooming. “The Parks Gardening Team always works hard throughout the Council area to ensure that all the floral beds and displays have every opportunity to bloom and flourish with each season. Spring is the time of year that people look forward to as splashes of colour start to bud from the ground, cheering us up as we leave the ‘winter blues’ behind. “It would be great if Hillsborough

Speaking about the event, Chairman of Lisburn PCSP, Councillor Stephen Magennis said: "I am keen that everyone with an interest in the rural community, especially residents are provided with reassurance on how the local police are tackling this topical issue. Both events will have representatives from the statutory agencies, voluntary organisations and private companies present. Specifically, there will be a focus on community safety, health and safety around the farm and home, and health and wellbeing. We can only be successful in combating crime if we all work together as a partnership. " A wide range of exhibitors representing local police, Lisburn PCSP, NI Fire and Rescue Service, Ulster Farmers Union, NI Health and Safety Executive, Lisburn City Council's Environmental Health Unit, Health Professionals, TADA Rural Support Network, Tracker and Tank Security Companies will attend the two events offering their professional knowledge and advice. Chief Inspector Darrin Jones, Area Commander for Lisburn PSNI said: "Rural and agricultural

crime is a serious issue and police understand the concerns of the rural community - those who have been directly involved. People affected by this type of crime not only suffer emotional and financial distress, but when key equipment or machinery is stolen, this has a direct impact on their ability to carry on their business. "We are committed to reducing rural and agricultural crime across the Lisburn area. Our approach in reducing opportunities for this type of crime is to increase public awareness, work with other partner agencies and commercial stakeholders to identify ways of preventing crime, and to target and arrest those committing such offences. "Rural and agriculture crime affects more than just those people who are direct victims; it impacts on jobs, the environment and the economy. It is a concern for all of us and I would therefore ask for assistance from the public in providing information that may support us in continuing to prevent crime and arresting those individuals or gangs that carry out offences within rural communities," he said.

The support of all the residents to keep this charming village tidy and vandalism free would be greatly appreciated as all elements of the village will be judged in the summer from recycling initiatives to street furniture and public parks.

The first of Lisburn City Council's Business Information Road Shows introducing local businesses to their Enterprise Support Team, took part in Hillsborough recently. Speakers from Lisburn City Council's Economic Development Unit, Lisburn Chamber of Commerce, Lisburn Enterprise Organisation, the South Eastern Regional College and the Department for Employment and Learning provided guidance on the support they can provide for businesses in the Lisburn area.

Speaking at the road show, Chairman of Lisburn City Council's Economic Development Committee, Alderman Allan Ewart, said: "Lisburn City Council, in partnership with other local agencies, delivers a comprehensive range of business support programmes and we want to let local businesses know about the support that is out there for them. By taking the support agencies on the road the businesses don't have to go looking for the information, we are bringing it to them." "In particular the Council is

promoting the latest business support programme called 'Evolution'. This is free tailored business mentoring for individual businesses to help them develop and grow. I would encourage all types of businesses to come along to one of the road shows that will be happening right across the Council area to learn more about this exciting and new programme. So whether you are a retailer, manufacturer or service provider you will get relevant useful information from the road show that you can put into practice straight away", he concluded.

Moira Demense upgrade progressing to enhance the area

The upgrade at Moira Demesne is now well underway and the works will see this popular landmark enhanced and modernised for late summer 2014.

Development Committee at Lisburn City Council, said: "The work is coming on really well and it is clearly very busy at the Demesne at this time between local people using the area and the construction work going on.

Work is progressing well with new pathways and walkways being constructed at the entrance part of the Demesne. The ÂŁ875,000 upgrade will ensure the continued use of the Park, which is a very popular area for dog-walking, play for children, jogging and other recreational use.

While it's hard to envisage how good the planned improvements will be, having seen the plans I am looking forward to a great end result with a superior offering for local people and visitors to the City of Lisburn.

The current Amenity block will also be subject to rebuild so as to offer a more modern facility for the local community. The project is being funded byn Lisburn City Council's Lagan Rural Partnership and the Leisure Services Department. Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of the Local Action Group of the Lagan Rural Partnership, and Chairman of the Economic

"I'm delighted that funds were available from the Lagan Rural Partnership for this work. Moira is one of those areas that is central enough to bigger towns and cities but has a rural identity as well, and I hope the local people will continue to keep using this very popular area as we move on with its upgrade." Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman

of the Leisure Services Committee, said: "The capital improvements are all about the benefit of the local community and of course ensuring that we preserve this very valuable open park area. Lisburn News Page 15

Welcome news for Lisburn as part of the first wave of the £80m Social Investment fund has been secured by two local community centres.

Investment of almost £1m from the fund will support the £558k redevelopment of West Lisburn Community Centre and the £385k extension to Laganview Enterprise Centre. A further £2.5m was announced for an early years intervention project that will be delivered across the South Eastern zone. West Lisburn is a community centre owned by Lisburn City Council from the early 1970s and these plans include demolition of the existing centre, being replaced by a new Youth Resource Centre. The proposed new facility will contain a sports hall, drop-in facilities and meeting rooms. The new Resurgam Youth Resource Centre will be a safe environment for activities and where young people can develop and interact. The extension to Laganview will involve the development of a

Healthy Living Centre which will see services targeted at improving health and wellbeing in the community. A number of organisations such as Early Intervention Lisburn, Resurgum Community Counselling, Lisburn Sure Start and Lisburn CARE already are based at LaganView and will benefit greatly when the new extension is finished.

Lisburn is one of UK’s Service of thanksgiving for the life of Dorothy Carlisle most affordable cities. Four of the UK's most affordable cities are in Northern Ireland, according to a new report.

Londonderry, Newry, Belfast and Lisburn made it into the top 10 of cheap cities to live in - with Derry securing the number two spot after Stirling in Scotland. Houses in Derry typically cost 3.6 times the local earnings, compared to the 5.8 average. Newry followed as the third most affordable city to live in, with Belfast taking fourth spot and Lisburn the seventh. The Lloyds Bank report found that city living in the UK has become less affordable in the last year amid resurgent house prices. The price of a home in a large British town or city has grown by 5% in 12 months to £184,215. But the average house price

inNorthern Ireland is now £131,000, stated the Office for National Statistics (ONS) index in January. The UK's most affordable cities are clustered in Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England. Oxford was found to be the least affordable place to live, with people facing a property price tag more than 11 times the local wage. THE TOP 10 - The UK's most affordable cities 1. Stirling 2. 'a wonderful mother and a devoted and loving wife' A service of thanksgiving for the life of Dorothy Carlisle was held in Christ Church Parish, Lisburn on Wednesday 5th February with interment afterwards at Lisburn New Cemetery Blaris. The service was conducted by the rector, the Rev Paul Dundas assisted by the senior minister, the Rev John Pickering. Rev Dundas gave the address and Dorothy's sons Paul and David gave

a warm tribute to their mother. Richard Yarr presided at the organ and led the congregational hymns that included, 'All things bright and beautiful' and 'What a friend we have in Jesus'. Dorothy Carlisle (nee Scott) died on Saturday 1st February and her funeral service took place on Wednesday 5th February, on what would have been her 65th birthday. Dorothy and her husband Bobby and their children Paul, David and Victoria were well known in many aspects of Lisburn life. Born in Lisburn on 5th February 1949, Dorothy and her family were members of Christ Church Parish. Dorothy attended Brownlee Primary School and after joining First Lisburn Girls' Brigade, she represented them successfully at All Ireland skipping competitions. She progressed to Forthill Girls' School and later to Lisburn Technical College. It was there that she renewed acquaintance

with a young man who she had met at a tennis court just a few weeks earlier. This young man, Bobby Carlisle, was a technician at the College and one day he was called upon to rescue six young ladies from a broken down lift. After the rescue, Dorothy couldn't refuse the offer of a date with the handsome young technician and the rest is history - they met at 15 years of age, married at 21 and had a loving 43 years of marriage during which they were almost inseparable. Dorothy was immensely proud of her three children Paul, David and Victoria and proved to be a wonderful mother whilst remaining a devoted and loving wife. Before the arrival of the children, Dorothy worked as a secretary in a law firm and as a personal assistant to the director of the Federation of Building Trade Employees. Recovering from serious illness in her early forties, Dorothy resumed employment with the well known

local company McCreath Taylor NI Ltd and during this time she enjoyed dealing with many of the officers in local authorities. Regrettably, two years ago, her illness returned. By this time Dorothy had a readymade replacement for her full time employment when grandchildren Annie, Polly and Johnny became a central focus. She loved them dearly and regularly attended the 'Toddlers Group' in Christ Church where she and fellow grannies swapped stories about the little ones. Shortly before her untimely death, Dorothy was delighted to hear that her daughter Victoria is pregnant with another grandchild to arrive in late summer. With a bravery, courage, faith and dignity which epitomised her life, Dorothy faced the challenge and found strength in the dedication of her loving husband, family and close friends who now all mourn her passing.

However they may not be cured? Ringing in the ears can be caused by a number of reasons. It could be as simple as a build up of wax which would need to be removed after advice. Head colds or a medical reason that would require a visit to GP. In the first instance you could either go to a qualified Hearing Aid Dispenser or your GP but action is advisable.

2. I get a lot of wax in my ears. Is there anything I can do prevent the wax from building up?

5. How do I motivate my mother to wear her hearing aid more often, she is always taking it out?

The production of wax is normal and natural. Some people are troubled with it other people are not. (It is the case of the individual having a wax management programme) Go and see a dependable audiologist.

This can be difficult as human beings tend to 'cope'. Encouragement and assessment from a professional might uncover the reason why the hearing aids are not being used.

This month David Parkinson from Lisburn’s Hearing Centre answers all your hearing related questions.

6. My child has had ear infections for several years now. Will she eventually outgrow this?

In children, the Eustachian Tube tends to be on a horizontal plane as the skull develops (in teenage years). The Eustachian Tube then becomes more vertical allowing mucus formed in the middle ear to be drawn down the back of the throat and so stopping the likes of glue ear and middle ear infections.

7. What is the smallest hearing aid available? Hearing Aids can be very tiny and discreet. They have to contain a computer and battery in order to function and it is dependent on the persons ear canal size as they must fit comfortably. Don't be put off with the size of hearing aids, the benefits are vastly more important. Hearing Aids can be tiny now a days.

Funding for the £29.5 million extension of Belfast Waterfront has been confirmed and plans for the new conference and exhibition facility have been unveiled. The scheme is expected to get under way by the summer and the target is to complete construction work by December 2015, with the extension fully operational by the following summer.

space for an extra 750 delegates, including five new breakout rooms, each catering for up to 200 people.

Belfast City Council had already committed £11 million to the project as part of its £150 million investment programme and today Enterprise Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster announced that she had approved funding of £18.5 million.

"This is great news for both tourism and the economy, following on the heels of the newly opened Visit Belfast Welcome Centre.

A significant part of that funding - £14.5 million - comes from the European Regional Development Fund, under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland, and administered by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, which is also providing funding of £4 million. The extended building will stretch out to the edge of the River Lagan and provide an additional 4,000 square metres of conference, exhibition and banqueting

Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said:

It will also provide employment opportunities with up to 400 construction jobs created during the building phase and the contract will include social clauses to provide placement opportunities for the unemployed, apprentices, students and trainees." Alderman Gavin Robinson, Chairman of Belfast City Council's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, which is responsible for delivering the Investment Programme, said: "Business tourism is recognised as being a significant growth area for Belfast during the next 10 years and we believe the new facilities

will enable the Waterfront to attract 50,000 conference delegates to Belfast every year - twice the current rate. "It is estimated that the expansion will generate an additional £39 million income for the city every year and create around 370 new jobs. We are confident that as a result of the announcement today, we will quickly see the commercial benefits and in the very near future we hope to be in a position to show some early return on this investment in the form of major conferences and events being confirmed as a result of today's announcement." Alderman Robinson said that the Belfast Waterfront was the jewel in the crown of the council's investment package which had already yielded £48 million of investment during the past two years in terms of projects either underway or completed including Mary Peter Track, Dunville and Woodvale Park, several local community schemes

and the recently opened Visit Belfast centre. He said: "Our aim was to make a significant contribution to the economic recovery through major developments and smaller community projects - through our Local Investment Fund - and provide much needed facilities and job opportunities right across the city. "The initiative has the support of all six parties in the council and as well as physical investment has provided over 430 job opportunities in two years doubling our target of 200 - and offered over 400 placements for students, disabled people and long term unemployed. "But it is this development at the Belfast Waterfront that will excite our citizens and visitors alike. The venue is already one of the top venues in the world and will further enhance its iconic status as a symbol of the new, prosperous Belfast we are all striving to create."

Market proves it’s the best!

St George’s Market has been named the best in the United Kingdom. The Victorian facility, which is owned and operated by Belfast City Council, was awarded the title of 'Best Large Indoor Market' at the annual NABMA (National Association of British Market Authorities) awards in Birmingham recently. NABMA is the trade body which represents local authority operated markets across the UK, and its annual awards are regarded as the most prestigious in the business. The 'Best Large Indoor Market' is one of the most coveted titles, and the 2014 award the most keenly contested in the history of the competition, with St George's beating off internationally renowned markets such as Billingsgate, Borough and Spitalfields to lift this year's crown. Reacting to the award, Councillor Deirdre Hargey, Chair of the Council's Development Committee, which oversees the Market, commented: "This is a fantastic and well-deserved honour. We in Council are fiercely proud of the Market, and it is great news for us to see it recognised in this way by our peers in the markets industry. I would like to pay tribute to the Market staff for all their hard work, and in particular to the traders, whose dedication to St George's is the key to its continuing success." Graham Wilson, Chief Executive of NABMA, added: "The 'Market of the Year' competition is intended to showcase some of the best markets in the United Kingdom. The judges are looking for markets that are a vital part of the local community and markets that demonstrate vibrancy and good working relationships between management and traders. Most played song at weddings revealed as Black Eyed Peas hit A recent survey into the most played songs at wedding receptions has revealed that the Black Eyed Peas hit record, I Gotta Feeling, is the most popular choice for brides and grooms in the UK beating the usual cheesy tunes more typically associated with weddings to clinch the number one spot. Digital music service, Spotify, studied 78,000 wedding playlists as part of their quest to track down the country's most popular wedding song. While the usual offenders including Abba's Dancing Queen and the Jackson 5's Blame it on the Boogie all appeared in the top 20 most played wedding songs, the results signal a definite shift towards modern hits as brides and grooms look to shun the golden oldie hits. While Black Eyed Peas with I Gotta Feeling came in at number one on the Spotify wedding

list, coming in at number 10 with her cover of the Bob Dylan classic, To Make You Feel My Love, however former wedding favourites such as Celine Dion and Mariah Carey failed to appear in the list at all. Beyoncé appears in the Spotify list twice but it's her up tempo hits which are favoured on the

wedding playlist with Single Ladies and Crazy in Love both featuring. Celebrity DJ and a regular on the wedding circuit, DJ Sam Young, believes

that couples these days are more concerned with throwing a great party for their guests hence the popularity of party tunes such as I Gotta Feeling in wedding playlists. Spotify also noted that 70% of wedding playlists are compiled by men; so ladies, are you handing over the reins to your other half when it comes to creating your wedding playlist? GUIDE TO WRITING THE BEST MAN’S SPEECH

Just about everybody is afraid of speaking in public, but as the best man at a wedding, you’re probably a bit more nervous than most. After all, you’re not just giving a speech; you’re giving a speech to honour what is supposed to be the most special and important day of a couple’s life. Well, actually it’s just a toast, and nobody expects you to be flawless.

HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS TO HELP WITH THE BEST MAN’S SPEECH. 1. Remember that the groom chose you to be his best man. Be man. Be yourself in your best man speech, and don’t worry about giving the speech in any overly-formal format that doesn’t reflect you 2. Keep it short. You don’t want to just say “Cheers” or deliver a oneliner, but you also don’t want to ramble on and on - this day is not about you. Your speech should be long enough to say what you want to say, but no longer. Try to keep the toast between 2-4 minutes. A lot of people say seven minutes should be the maximum, but really anything over five minutes can tend to get a bit tiresome.

3. Prepare your speech in advance. Write it out. The sooner you get it written, the more time you’ll have to practice and perfect it, and the more confident you’ll be when you have to get up in front of everybody. 4. Introduce yourself and explain how you know the bride and groom. It’s likely that not everybody present will know you, so you should say who you are, how you met the bride and groom, and how long you’ve known them. 5. Thank the parents and guests. It’s traditional to thank the people paying for the wedding, usually the bride’s parents. Don’t thank them for “paying for” the celebration, but rather for helping to make it possible. It’s also nice to thank all the guests for being there.

6. Offer a toast for the Bridesmaids. Mention what great friends they have been for the Bride and refer to how lovely they look. 7. Tell a little story. The main part of your speech should be a story that tells a little bit about the groom and, possibly, the bride. There are basically two approaches: tell a funny story or a heartwarming story. Or you could combine the two. A particularly appropriate story might talk about how the bride and groom met or something that happened earlier in their relationship. If you can’t think of anything memorable, talk to friends or family of the groom. 8. The story should be appropriate for people of all ages, and it should not be humiliating or offensive. Avoid mentioning the groom’s

10. Propose a toast. This is the most important part of the speech. You just want to wish the couple the best in their lives together. How you do so is completely up to you. You could use a quote, or you can just speak from your heart. When you’re done, raise your glass, and offer a toast in honour of the happiness of the bride and groom. TIPS * Bring some notes up with you in case you go blank during the toast. You don’t want to read your speech off a piece of paper, but a brief outline on a notecard can help you make sure you don’t forget any important parts.

ex-girlfriends, his time in prison, or anything derogatory about the bride. While the story doesn’t have to be about both the bride and groom - you are the groom’s best man, after all, and may not know the bride very well. Iit’s good to spend at least a little

* Tasteful humour tends to go over well in most speeches, and a best man’s toast is no exception. A good joke is especially valuable as an icebreaker at the beginning of your speech, and some comic relief is always welcome after a sappy, heartwarming story.

time talking about the bride, as well. Try to make the speech balanced. If you can’t think of any appropriate stories, or if you don’t know the bride well enough to include her in a story, make some observations about love or marriage in general or about the groom’s feelings for the bride. A great way to grab the wedding guests attention while telling a story is by saying something along the lines of “Would anyone like to hear an embarrassing story about the groom?” or “I’m about to let you in on a secret about the groom”, or “the groom begged me not to include this story in my speech but I simply had to.”

* Don’t force humour. If you’re comfortable giving humorous speeches and have done it before, great. If you don’t like speaking in public, and aren’t confident in your ability to be funny, it’s much better to read a serious speech off index cards than to try to become a comedian for one night. And most jokes from “best jokes for weddings” books or web sites are NOT funny. Remember, no one will be mad at you for not being funny enough, but they will definitely remember you negatively if you fill your speech with terrible jokes.

9. Expand on the groom’s virtues. Either during the story or after it, it’s time to build your mate up. For example, talk about his loyalty as a friend, his compassion, or the fact that you know how much he loves the bride and how he’ll make a great husband. In a way, you can think of yourself as a salesman, selling the groom to members of the bride’s family who may not know him as well as you do. It’s completely normal to find this part a little embarrassing. Don’t forget to also pay homage to the bride. You don’t want to give the impression that you don’t know why this wonderful guy is marrying her.

* You can find a lot of examples of best man speeches on the internet, either for free or for purchase. You may find these helpful just to give you some ideas, but don’t copy them. Speak from your heart, and let your individual voice come through. Your own words will be far more meaningful than any canned speech. * If you want to try something a little different, consider a slideshow of relevant photos or text as a visual aid. Remember, though, keep it short. * THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND: o compliments can have the same effect as a good one-liner so

compliment often. o ensure your speech combines humour with sincerity. o a short poem (4 or 5 lines will do) about the Bride and Groom is always very well received. o no matter how well you have memorized your speech bring a copy with you on the big day as nerves can effect the most confident of speakers. o mention how the Groom is the happiest he has ever been since the Bride entered his life. o use quotes from famous people. There are lots of marriage quips and one-liners made from famous people that are ideal for using in a Best Man speech, an example being this quote from Oscar Wilde who said “Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.” o props can enhance a Best Man speech so try to have a prop to use, examples might be; an umbrella (for winter weddings), a crumpled brown envelope where you can pretend to have “found one of the Groom’s old school reports, or a toy wrestling belt for the sports fan. WARNINGS * Unless you’re 100% certain that you know 100% of the guests and what their tastes are, do NOT let your speech get off-colour. DON’T tell dirty jokes, the suggestive remarks about the honeymoon, and the stories about the groom’s ex-girlfriend. They probably aren’t appropriate. This isn’t a locker room. Even if the groom and his friends might find them funny, the bride and her mother probably won’t. If you ruin the reception with a dirty joke and embarrass the bride, no one will ever forgive you, especially her. So always play it on the safe side - if you’re wondering whether a joke is clean enough to use - don’t use it. * Stay sober, or at least don’t get too tipsy before giving your speech. Looking like a drunk or a slob will sour everyone’s impression of you, and it may call into question the groom’s judgment. * Make no mention of the groom’s ex-wives or ex-girlfriends in your speech as this will be certain to embarrass the groom.

LONDON: On a tapestry far, far away

DOVER: Angel of the North made from chips and peas A food artist has recreated some of Britain’s most iconic landmarks - including the Angel of the North from chips and mushy peas.

A London artist and sci-fi fan has handstitched the entire Star Wars saga onto a 30ft Bayeux-style tapestry. Aled Lewis’s Coruscant Tapestry depicts the Star Wars story from Episode 1 through to Episode 6. It features quotes from each film written in Aurebesh - the fictional system of writing within the Star Wars universe - on the surrounding border. There is even a separate wooden translation plate for viewers to translate the symbols in the border of the tapestry. The Coruscant Tapestry is currently on display at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles where it’s on sale for 12,000. Mr Lewis came up with the idea

to create a Star Wars tapestry last year and started to map it out through notes and sketches. He watched and rewatched the films and read up on what were considered to be the major plot points and the key players in the main story during the saga. He then ordered a ten metre piece of continuous fabric from Germany and the cotton thread was shipped from France. The whole process took him six months from formulating the idea to hemming the finished tapestry.

LAPLAND: Reindeer get glow in the dark antlers Reindeer herders in Lapland are giving their livestock glow-in-thedark antlers in a bid to save them from being hit by cars.

The antlers of 20 reindeer have been painted with various fluorescent dyes to see which one is the most effective. It is the the latest attempt to stop thousands of road deaths involving reindeer in Lapland, northern Finland, each year. Carrie Neely Contemporary Art to host exclusive Art for NSPCC event at the MAC

Book Review : The Book Thief

The movie version of The Book Thief is currently in cinemas now. By Clare Brannigan

The film has recently been taking the box office by storm. However, it is the bestselling book that will always remain the firm favourite for loyal fans. Markus Zusak’s 2006 novel The Book Thief received critical acclaim for its originality, story and emotion. The novel targeted a young adult audience. It is evident, though, that its appeal transcends this classification significantly.

Let the good times roll by Stephen Forbes local student talent. You might also find the odd celebrity piece nestled amongst the work too. Carrie said:

Carrie Neely Contemporary Art is hosting an exclusive, art auction for NSPCC Northern Ireland from 24th – 26th March 2014 at the MAC, Belfast. Art for NSPCC incorporates a silent auction, and Carrie is hoping that art lovers from across Northern Ireland will dig deep in aid of the NSPCC Northern Ireland’s Changing Childhoods Appeal. This is the second Art for NSPCC event that Carrie has hosted for the charity. The first event which took place in 2012 raised over £25,000 for the charity. This year’s auction is set to be even bigger, with over 100 pieces set to go under the hammer. Work from established local artists such as Neil Shawcross and JB Vallely and international artworks by Damien Hirst and Picasso sit alongside pieces by emerging artists and the cream of

“It is a huge honour to be able to host this auction in aid of NSPCC, and my thanks go to all the artists who have submitted work. The pieces form a really strong exhibition which is free to attend and I know visitors to the MAC will enjoy it. My hope is really that people are inspired to head to www.32auctions.com/artfornspcc and contribute to the vital work of the NSPCC by bidding for their favourite piece. Knowing that a piece of art you bought has made a difference to a child’s life will make it all the more special. “Not only is the work from a huge range of artists at all stages of their career, it covers a range of styles and prices to suit all pockets. With artworks starting at £70 including paintings, prints, sculpture and photography, there is something for everyone’s taste and every situation, from the living room of the art lover to large scale work suitable for corporate spaces. “You might feel inspired by the calm of Brian Ballard’s façade of St. Anne’s Cathedral, or perhaps you’d prefer the hive of activity depicted in Stephen Forbes’ ‘Let the Good Times Roll’. If portraiture has appeal then you can choose from more traditional styles by Gareth Reid or Ian Wilgaus, contrasting with street art portraiture such

Cow – by Paul Bell. as Stephen Houston’s ‘Van the Man’ or Mark Mearns’ compelling use of subject matter. Paul Bell’s distinctive ‘Cow’ leads a wide range of work depicting nature but if your interests are more man-made, how about Brendan Jamison’s Baby Orange Submarine?! The range of works is vast, and there’s no substitute for coming down to the MAC to take a look yourself.” Art for NSPCC will be on display in the MAC from Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th March and the MAC is open daily from 10am to 7pm. MOVIE OF THE MONTH: About Last Night

Director: Steve Pink Cast: Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryant Cert: 15 Release date: 21/03/2014

There’s the one night stand, and there’s the long-term relationship. Both have their place in the modern world of dating, but can the former become the latter, the heat of the moment transforming into the ever-burning fire? It's a perennial question, one that introduces a host of others: does it matter who says "I love you" first? How long should a couple wait before moving in together? When should best friends get involved, and should it be with positive encouragement or

by playing devil's advocate? (And does it matter if the friends' romantic lives carry their own problems?) In the insightful, hilarious romantic comedy About Last Night four Los Angeles singles get a thorough workout in the ups and downs of today's dating world.

On yet another night of playing wingman to his loud-mouthed best friend Bernie (KEVIN HART), kind-eyed Danny (MICHAEL EALY) meets Debbie (JOY BRYANT), a beautiful, smart and successful woman who is as skittish about relationships as he is. When the chemistry proves to be undeniable, they end up falling into bed together that night ...then another night, and another night. Against the advice and warnings

of Bernie, not to mention Debbie's precocious bestie Joan (REGINA HALL), Dan and Debbie make an attempt to navigate life as a couple. What these starry-eyed lovers soon find is that despite their good intentions and genuine feelings for each other, what started out as a casual and intoxicating intimacy quickly falls prey to the usual trappings of togetherness and monogamy. Between sex, exes and texts, "hey baby" versus "how was your day?," and dealing with the holidays - not to mention all that owning a pet implies - About Last Night puts modern relationships under the microscope, and comes up with a laugh-filled, romantic and highly entertaining take on coupledom. A reimagining of the classic film originally released in 1986 and starring Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins, this contemporary version follows new love on its journey from the bar to the bedroom, and eventually in the real world, where all matchups get put to the test.

The Four Of Us 25th Anniversary Kasey Smith represents

One song that I have always loved Ireland in Copenhagen in May playing on the radio and always find myself singing along to is Mary by The 4 Of Us, one of the best bands ever to come out of Northern Ireland.

Don’t miss the Four Of Us at The Empire on March 14th. The 4 Of Us, celebrated their 25th Anniversary of ‘Songs For The Tempted’ with a sold out show at Vicar Street recently and are now hoping for the same in Belfast when they play The Empire Hall on Friday 14th March. The musical career of Newryborn brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy spans more than two decades. They shot to early fame with their debut Songs for

the Tempted, which featured the massive hits Mary and Drag My Bad Name Down. The follow up Man Alive made Q magazines prestigious Top 50 albums of 1992 and included the UK Top 30 song She Hits Me. The band has notched up over two decades of radio hits and 6 top 20 Irish charting albums, and their music has also been featured

extensively on American, British, and Irish TV soundtracks. The new album by THE 4 OF US is due for release in mid 2014. Lyrically the album explores the brothers early years growing up in Northern Ireland and musically it focuses on the trademark interplay of their acoustic guitars. It promises to be one of their best yet.Looking forward to the new album and seeing them in the Empire on 14th March!

Molly Smitten-Downes represents the UK.

It’s nearly Eurovision time again! This time last year the great Bonnie Tyler was getting ready to represent the UK with her amazing song Believe In Me. So, this year it was gonna be a tough job to follow in the footseps of Bonnie so the BBC have chosen an unknown – Molly SmittenDownes. Molly, who actually had a hit back

in 2008 with Raindrops (Encore Une Fois), a collaboration with the DJ Sash, will be performing Children Of The Universe in Copenhagen in May. Will she win??

Of course not! Meanwhile Ireland will be hoping for a better result this year and have gone for something a bit more catchy….an Irish dance tune called Heartbeat performed by Cann-linn and Kasey Smith.

Tributes paid to top showbiz agent Paul McCullough Sad time recently as we said goodbye to one of Northern Irelands top showbiz agents. Many people throughout the Lisburn area will have known Paul McCullough who ran Meadowvale Entertainments for many years.

Paul, who was a well respected agent both here in Northern Ireland and also in Scotland lost his battle with cancer last month. Survived by his partner Isabell and daughters Claire and Megan, Paul will be best remembered for bringing many entertainers from across the UK to Northern Ireland as well as supporting many home

grown talents. Paul will be missed by so many people including myself. Paul was my first manager and the first person who believed in my decision to become a radio broadcaster. It was through Paul’s guidance and encouragement that landed me my big break on Citybeat. Paul was a well respected agent and was genuinely one of the good guys in this business.

Robin with Terri Hooley every Sunday at TILT So, what’s your plans for St Patrick’s Day? I will be spending the evening working with Mr Good Vibrations Terri Hooley. For the past few Sundays I have been sharing the DJ Decks with Terri at Belfast’s new American theme bar TILT, on the Ormeau Road. I know its unusual combination – the Grandfather of Punk and

myself, but it seems to work. An eclectic combination of tunes can be expected, everything from rock & punk classics to a bit of soul & reggae and even an appearance from Hank Williams, Doris Day and of course a bit off Teenage Kicks! You can catch myself and Terri at TILT on Sunday 16th March and on St Patricks Day from 9pm. Come and join us for a Hooley!

A chip shop owner with a chocolate obsession has created the world’s largest deep-fried Ferrero Rocher. John Clarkson was inspired to make the whopping 5kg treat after a normal-sized batch proved a surprise hit with customers at the Mister Eaters chippy in Preston, Lancashire. The massive chocolate is ten times the size of a normal Ferrero Rocher and contains more than

25,000 calories. ‘We sourced a secret Ferrero Rocher recipe from America to allow us to make a large quantity and then form it into a large ball,’ his wife Corinne Clarkson told the Lancashire Evening Post. ‘Making the ball was not hard but other steps along the way were more challenging. ‘The fryers had to be filled to maximum capacity to keep the ball buoyant and we had to use oversized equipment at every stage. We have the giant on display and it is creating a lot of interest.’ The couple have previously deep-fried mince pies at Christmas.

Motoring News

Save up to £5,000 on Motoring Costs

For many people it feels like owning and driving a car is becoming more expensive. This is unwelcome as for most of the population of Northern Ireland, owning a car is a necessity. Driving is also something that many of us enjoy. It is not all bad news, though. For example, cars are much more reliable today than they were 10 or 20 years ago. Plus they come with much longer warranties which means the cost of maintaining a car, particularly one that is reasonably new, is low. But petrol prices, diesel prices, and insurance prices hit us in the pocket. So, we have put together this guide to help you save money on the cost of motoring. By following these steps we estimate you could save as much as £5,000 in 2014. 1. EFFICIENCY There are two steps to motoring in a more efficient way. Firstly, there is the way you drive, and secondly there is your car itself. We will start with how you drive. You could save hundreds of pounds every year by changing some of your driving habits. Here is how: Don't Brake - Okay, that is not actually true: if you need to brake, then brake. However there are occasions when slowing down naturally is possible. Coming off a motorway slip road is a good example. Instead of driving off the motorway and up the slip road (and burning fuel) before braking hard, try taking your foot off the accelerator earlier and allowing the car to slow down naturally. Speed Up Gradually - Over revving your engine burns fuel unnecessarily. The best advice is to keep your revs low and build your speed up gradually. You will reach the same speed, it will only take a few seconds longer, and you will use less fuel.

Use The Right Gear - Use a gear that is appropriate for your speed. You should not be over-revving, nor should you make the engine labour. Speed Bumps - If you accelerate to a speed bump and then brake hard to get over it, try a smoother approach. Keep your speed consistent (about 15mph is about right for most speed bumps) between and over the bumps. Awareness - Being more aware of what is going on around you while driving will result in you having to use your brakes less often; for example, by leaving more space between you and the car in front of you. Being more aware will also make you a safer driver. Then there is your car, which can also be made more efficient. Here is how: - Remove roof bars and racks - Make sure your tyres are at the right pressure - Empty your car of stuff you don't need so you are not carrying any extra weight - Don't fill up at the petrol station filling half way is more fuel efficient - Turn off your air conditioning, particularly at lower speed Following all of these tips could save you between £500 and £1,000 per year. 2. BUDGET BRANDS The car industry has undergone a revolution in recent years with the introduction of budget brands. These brands are giving motorists much lower prices while not compromising on quality or reliability. In fact, many of the budget brands offer longer warranties than the more traditional car makers and this is forcing the traditional brands to rethink their strategies. This is good for consumers. At the forefront of this change is Dacia. It is Renault's budget

brand and is the latest to enter the UK market. It is safe to say it has made an impact. Let's look at one car in their range, the Dacia Sandero. It falls into the B segment, or supermini classification, so is competing with cars like the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, and Peugeot 208.

At this month’s Geneva Motor Show Audi will pull the wraps from a completely new iteration of the compact sports car that tore up the rulebook and changed the course of design in its class at its 1998 launch. For the third generation of the iconic TT, the designers have reinterpreted a host of ideas from that first, game-changing template.

Two contours form a V-pattern over the bonnet. The position of the four rings is also new - they now sit centrally on the hood, echoing the R8.

The flat greenhouse looks like an entity in its own right. The shape of the C-pillar, with a slight kink, gives the TT a powerful, athletic look and enhances the impression of tension.

"When a drive-off occurs, the petrol retailer reports it as usual and completes a statement in a pack we have provided to them. We establish the ownership of the vehicle concerned and write to the owner who has two weeks in which to make restitution. "If they do not within that time period they will be liable for prosecution. The scheme has advantages for the police in that it saves us time, and for the retailers in that it means they recover their money without any more effort than

Inspector McCamley said the majority of drive-offs are due to human error and in many instances customers have gone into petrol station shops to buy other items and forget they have filled up their vehicle. "Our experience has been that the vast majority of cases followed up under Forecourt Watch have been successful and during the period 1st April 2013 until 31st January 2014 almost £35,000 has been recovered," he added. "However there are still some motorists who will deliberately try to evade paying for fuel and police encourage forecourt owners to take measures to help prevent the number of drive-offs occurring."

MyCarCheck.com Top Tips For Used Car Buyers: Alfa 4C, Sportage & 7 Series Praised As Cabriolet Prices Dip

MyCarCheck.com - the UK’s No.1 consumer vehicle data provider - has saved millions of people from making an expensive used car mistake. In these monthly bulletins its used car experts reveal significant trends in the UK market and suggest three wise buys. Highly desirable: Alfa Romeo 4C Safe bet: Kia Sportage Used star: BMW 7 Series Head of Valuation Services at MyCarCheck.com, Gavin Amos, commented: “The new Alfa Romeo 4C is a very pretty car which is great fun to drive, even though the double clutch gearbox is not to everyone’s taste. For a carbon fibre car packed with advanced technology it is highly affordable, but there’s only a handful of them around and the order books for a new one are full. This is definitely a car worth paying a premium for. In fact, you’ll probably have to to get one! “In terms of cars that hold their value, safe bets don’t come much safer than the Kia Sportage. It is a very fashionable-looking vehicle and all-round a very functional purchase. The long warranty and attractive running costs help to make it a really sensible buy. However, because there’s not a vast

number of them around, residual values remain strong. As always, it is well worth checking before you buy to make sure the one you’re looking at hasn’t been clocked or crashed. “For our ‘used star’ this month I’ve chosen the BMW 7 Series. This luxury vehicle has a fairly strong price tag even for this highend sector. In terms of residual value, a lot is shaved off in the first couple of years, making it an ideal secondhand buy. The ride is smooth, the engines are efficient and a good used example will deliver a massive saving against the list price. When it comes to negotiating on price, remember, as well as revealing a car’s history, MyCarCheck.com also provides vehicle valuations - a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.” As to market trends, Head of Car Valuations at MyCarCheck.com, Alan Senior, commented: “The news that the economy is ahead of the government’s forecast is no surprise to the used car trade. Dealers know from the many enquiries that UK consumers are already feeling more confident about 2014. “The big headache for traders is the pressure to source the right stock to replace sold units. Such a situation

can lead to only one thing: values strengthening. It’s the same issue we’ve been banging on about for the past three to four years now: there are just not enough clean, well-maintained examples to meet demand, and this is unlikely to improve for the rest of this year. “One notable exception is the coupe and cabriolet market. At this time of year no dealer expects great results from convertible sales and, although consumer confidence is up, it will take a little more economic stability to bring back buyers to this sector. “Our research shows that the models most affected are from the premium brands: Audi A4 convertible, A5 coupe and convertible, BMW 3 series coupe and convertible, Z3 and Z4 convertible, BMW 6 series coupe and convertible, Jaguar XK, Mercedes SLK, C Class Sport coupe, CLK, and CL coupe. Elsewhere, Volvo C70 convertibles are notoriously hard to find buyers for and Saab convertibles have to be cheap to create any retail interest. “While the same lack of retail interest currently applies to the more run-of-the-mill convertibles, such as Peugeot 307 and 308, Renault Megane, Vauxhall Astra and Tigra, it is likely that these buyers will return with sunnier

weather. These models have taken such a value hit over the past year, they now look very good value for money... and cheap convertible will always attract attention. “Many dealers are reluctant to bid guide values on vehicles offered to them by private sellers, unless the service history is rock solid. You can tell by the ever-increasing numbers of stranded vehicles on our motorways that poor maintenance and lack of servicing is taking its toll. “The value difference of a car with strong service history compared to the same car with an incomplete service book is getting wider. This applies even more so to the premium brands. The technical complexities of modern cars, along with higher component and labour costs, have resulted in the trade being very wary. Dealers are likely to bid on the low side in an attempt to avoid any financial maladies.” Over the last couple of years, MyCarCheck.com, MyMotorCycleCheck.com and MyTextCheck delivered around 4.5m consumer checks including those via AutoExpress and WhatCar?. Breaking Snooze Road safety charity the IAM is offering weekly motoring tips from Britain's top advanced driver, Peter Rodger. This week, he is advising on combating fatigue.

- Plan your journey to include a stop at least once every two hours. - Where possible, share the driving with another driver. - Make sure you drink enough fluids. - Don't plan to travel late at night if you can avoid it. The overnight hours are particularly hard if you

are tired.

- Don't ignore warning signs of fatigue. If you feel drowsy, stop at the next motorway service area, get out of the car and walk around. - In extreme cases, have a caffeine drink and sleep for 20 minutes while it takes effect. You can only do this once in a journey; it won't have the same effect if you do it again. IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "Motorways are our safest roads - but they are monotonous. If you're embarking on a long journey, get a good rest and use this advice to help make sure you're alert throughout."

Chris Webster, Domestic Rugby Manager at Ulster Rugby, commented: "While many fans will be aware that the Ulster Rugby senior team has enjoyed significant success over the past couple of years, we are also making huge strides at grassroots level. The support of Ulster Carpets over the past couple of seasons has enabled us to apply more resources to growing the game in high schools and within club youth rugby.

Ulster Carpets are proud to continue their sponsorship of Ulster Youth & High Schools rugby into 2014 following massive growth in the first 15 months of the partnership. Increasing the club rugby player base at youth level has been a major focus for Ulster Rugby and it is pleasing to see that there has been a 7.5% rise in registered youth

Such a milestone could not go unmarked so I was delighted to present each participant with a ‘Couch to 5K’ Park Run Graduation Certificate.

“The Council’s Sports Development Unit was delighted by the uptake of this initiative that took place in 2013 when Lisburn celebrated being the European City of Sport. Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee was delighted to attend the young people’s last coaching session at which they received their certificates. Alderman Paul Porter, speaking about the programme, said: “It was a delight to start my Saturday by spending time watching thirty young children with an autism spectrum condition show off the cycling skills they had learned over the past six weeks. The development of the participants in terms of motor skills, balance and co-ordination is amazing; and I would like to commend the children, the coaches and the parents. “Not only have these young

people, whose parents I am sure thought may never ride a bicycle, learnt to cycle but they have also gained confidence and improved self-esteem. I hope that they will continue to cycle now that they have completed the training and enjoy many good experiences cycling both at home and on family outings. Well done to all the participants!” he concluded. Lisburn City Council is delighted that it was able to play host to this fantastic initiative that helps young people with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Condition gain some independence.
