Does anything last of ourselves beyond our rather short lifetimes? What connects us to the world and the cosmos around us? Are loved ones that have died still with us? When I first read Philip Metres’s poem When my daughter asked why there are stars, I said, it was as if he had looked into my heart and given voice to questions, longings, and fears that have been swirling inside me for many months. The poem expresses awe at the vastness of our universe, yearning to understand our place within it, loneliness of losing ones we love, and the hope of a moment of conviction. Metres uses line breaks and spaces to distribute words and phrases out across the page with gaps around them, like stars shining in the night sky. This translates musically into wide spaced chords and pointillistic attacks in the saxophones, while the singer’s phrases float, vulnerable, searching. Later, texture and momentum build, expressing optimism and possibility. At the climax of the piece, a soaring soprano saxophone solo bursts forth, representing an almost divine moment of connection. If there is a meaning to our lives, if something of ourselves can continue on after we are gone, I think it might be in the way Metres describes: in the light of a distant star reaching us ten thousand years after it has been extinguished, in a turn of phrase passed on from a loved one that becomes so fused with our own way of thinking that we can no longer tell where it ends and we begin.
About the Composer:
Pe ru s
al
This piece was commissioned by the Resonance Saxophone Orchestra for performance at the 41st U.S. Navy International Saxophone Symposium and was premiered on January 12, 2019. It is dedicated to my Grandma Pat Harvey: stargazer, mystic, seeker of truth, fountain of love, who was so excited about the piece from its first whisperings all the way to the double bar line. For the last year, every visit has included the question, “Now what about those saxophones?” Well, here they are. I love you.
Portland, Oregon composer and mezzo-soprano Lisa Neher (b. 1985) writes theatrical, story-driven music for instruments and voices. Trained as a stage actress, her compositions are shaped by her keen sense of dramatic timing and feature aching, lyrical phrases, energetic rhythmic motives, and intense harmonies. Lisa’s particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber opera White Horizon, about a nineteenth-century Arctic expedition gone wrong. She often draws inspiration for her instrumental works from the natural world, expressing the joyous bubbling of streams, the delicacy of sprouting plants, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life with evocative timbres and vivid motives. Lisa’s commissions include works for Durward Ensemble, the Glass City Singers, Coe College Symphony Orchestra, Kirkwood Community College Chamber Singers, pianist Michael Kirkendoll, and flutist Rose Bishop. Her marimba duo Thaw was premiered by Mayumi Hama and Chris Froh at the Sacramento State Festival of New American Music. She is a fellow of the Cortona Sessions for New Music and the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. Lisa is in high demand as a performer of contemporary and standard repertoire and is the creator of the One Voice Project, a one-woman performance combining contemporary poetry and new musical works for unaccompanied voice chosen through a call for scores initiative. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance & Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, a Masters of Music in Composition from the University of Kansas, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music and Theatre from Lewis & Clark College. She served on faculty at Grinnell College, Coe College, and Kirkwood Community College, teaching applied voice, vocal seminar, and applied composition. Lisa spends her free time training for and competing in triathlons, watching science fiction movies, and baking delicious treats involving copious amounts of chocolate. Philip Metres pmetres@jcu.edu
When my daughter asked why there are stars, I said because we need to know
even the dark
hovering above us
its infinite
like our skull
seen from the inside
of onyx filled
with cracks
black like a bowl
flickers of a future
is a bright snow
ten thousand years
from now
but sending us the way I hope some night
still arriving
Sc or e
shatter
dome
their final something I say when you
signals of light
will come back
twisting in sheets
and though I’ll have some phrase
almost without sliding down
little glimmer .
your knowing
your spine
swimming
glint of warmth .
can’t break out
been translated
will effuse

into dream
already dead
behind your eyes
when it began your restless limbs— winter ember .
