When moving between simple and compound meters, the eighth note is always constant. Diamond noteheads denote air tones to be played with little or no pitch. Winds and brass: finger notated pitches to create slight timbral differences. Strings: play "air tones" molto flautando, using extremely low pressure with finger and bow, producing an airy tone with only a hint of pitch. Horizontal beams next to a notehead indicate to sustain the note or air tone for an approximate proportional duration. Boxed figures are to be repeated ad lib for the duration of the horizontal beam.

Measures 1-18 and 135-142 use proportional (spacial) notation, denoted with "X" time signatures. In m. 1 and mm. 135-136, a bracket provides approximate timings over percussion section soli. In mm. 2-18 and mm. 137-142, each measure equals approximately 5 seconds, with timings in seconds provided starting from 0." The conductor should cue the beginning of each measure, and instruments should enter proportionally within that bar. Events in these measures should be asynchronous to create overlapping wind and storm noise textures. In measure 18 and measure 237, winds and brass are asked to play a loud, nasty multiphonic, either the one notated, or one of their choice. The effect should be more noise than pitch to create a "tornado siren" effect. Each player may choose their own multiphonic (for example, Flute 1 and Flute 2 do not need to play the same multiphonic, etc). Source for clarinet multiphonic: Greg Oakes, www.gregoryoakes.com/multiphonic/, oboe multiphonic: Oboe Unbound by Libby Van Cleve.

Program Note: “Twister” was first commissioned in 2017 by Durward Ensemble of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I was tremendously honored to be subsequently commissioned by my dear friend and colleague Dr. Michelle Perrin Blair (who conducted the premiere concerts with Durward and the recording for their CD release) and the Coe College Symphony Orchestra to create this orchestral version. I taught at Coe College for five years and I have a special place in my heart for the unique, multi-talented student body and the accomplished, generous faculty and staff of the Coe Music Department. Writing this version was a particular delight because it allowed me to exploit the immense color palate of the orchestra. Listeners will hear fluttering motives in the winds, haunting melodies in the horns and reeds, bombastic fanfares in the trumpets and low brass, intricate layers of percussive sounds, and the warmth and vibrancy of the full string section. My impetus for “Twister” was to write a piece in celebration of the natural world of the American heartland. Originally a westcoast girl, I spent nine years living in the Midwest and became closely acquainted with its big skies, rolling hills, and extreme weather. I was inspired by the raw power and terrifying beauty of tornadoes. “Twister” delves into the tornado as a shadowy force to be reckoned with, a display of the awesome might and supremacy of nature. The piece opens with a variety of sound effect noises that evoke gathering winds, rain, hail, and thunder. At other moments, boisterous, asymmetrical melodies represent the strength of the tornado while flurries of activity evoke frenzied winds. These build to cacophonous clusters of chords that represent the raging storm and the sound of emergency sirens. The uproar cuts out abruptly in the middle of the piece, as if the listener is protected for a moment in the eye of the storm, but not for long…

Portland, Oregon composer and mezzo-soprano Lisa Neher (b. 1985) writes theatrical, story-driven music for instruments and voices. Trained as a stage actress, her compositions are shaped by her keen sense of dramatic timing and feature aching, lyrical phrases, energetic rhythmic motives, and intense harmonies. Lisa’s particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber opera White Horizon, about a nineteenth-century Arctic expedition gone wrong. She often draws inspiration for her instrumental works from the natural world, expressing the joyous bubbling of streams, the delicacy of sprouting plants, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life with evocative timbres and vivid motives.

Lisa’s commissions include works for Durward Ensemble, the Glass City Singers, Coe College Symphony Orchestra, Kirkwood Community College Chamber Singers, pianist Michael Kirkendoll, and flutist Rose Bishop. Her marimba duo Thaw was premiered by Mayumi Hama and Chris Froh at the Sacramento State Festival of New American Music. She is a fellow of the Cortona Sessions for New Music and the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music.

Lisa is in high demand as a performer of contemporary and standard repertoire and is the creator of the One Voice Project, a one-woman performance combining contemporary poetry and new musical works for unaccompanied voice chosen through a call for scores initiative. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance & Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, a Masters of Music in Composition from the University of Kansas, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music and Theatre from Lewis & Clark College. She served on faculty at Grinnell College, Coe College, and Kirkwood Community College, teaching applied voice, vocal seminar, and applied composition. Lisa spends her free time training for and competing in triathlons, watching science fiction movies, and baking delicious treats involving copious amounts of chocolate.
