Performance Notes:
When moving between simple and compound meters, the eighth note is always constant. Diamond noteheads denote air tones to be played with little or no pitch. Winds and brass: finger notated pitches to create slight timbral differences.

Boxed figures are to be repeated ad lib for the duration of the horizontal beam.
Measures 2-14 and 134-137 use proportional (spacial) notation, denoted with "X" time signatures Approximate timings in seconds are provided starting at 0" from the start of the proportional notation. Events in these measures should be asynchronous to create overlapping wind and storm noise textures. In measure 13 and measure 232, winds and brass are asked to play the loudest, nastiest multiphonic imaginable. The effect should be more noise than pitch to create a "tornado siren" like effect.

Program Note:

This piece was commissioned by Durward ensemble of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and marks the end of my eighth year living in the Midwest. In light of these facts, I wanted to write something in celebration of the natural world of this region. I was inspired by the raw power and terrifying beauty of tornadoes. Without making light of the heartbreaking destructive impacts these storms can have on human life, I wanted to delve into the tornado as a riveting phenomenon of our planet. The piece opens with a variety of sound effect noises that evoke gathering winds, hail, and thunder. These sounds return abruptly in the middle of the piece, as if the listener is protected for a moment in the eye of the storm. In the rest of the piece, boisterous, asymmetrical melodies take delight in the heroic and vast supremacy of nature. Cacophonous cluster chords and multiphonics represent the raging storm and the sounds of tornado sirens.

About the Composer:

Composer and mezzo-soprano Lisa Neher (b. 1985) writes theatrical, story-driven music for instruments and voices. Trained as a stage actress, her compositions are shaped by her keen sense of dramatic timing and feature aching, lyrical phrases, energetic rhythmic motives, and intense harmonies. Lisa’s particular passion for text and poetry has led to works such as her chamber opera White Horizon, about a nineteenthcentury Arctic expedition gone wrong, and her song cycle Snapshots, which she performed at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy. She draws inspiration for her instrumental works from the natural world, evoking the joyous bubbling of streams, the delicacy of sprouting plants, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life with evocative timbres. Lisa is in high demand as a performer, premiering numerous works in the United States and abroad, including the leading role of Jennifer in the world premiere of Rita Ueda’s chamber opera One Thousand White Paper Cranes for Japan with the Singaporean ensemble Chamber Sounds. She is the creator of the One Voice Project, a one-woman performance combining contemporary poetry and new musical works for unaccompanied voice chosen through a call for scores initiative. Lisa holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music (Composition and Vocal Performance) and Theatre from Lewis & Clark College, a Master of Music degree in Composition from the University of Kansas, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa. She studied composition with Michael Johanson and Forrest Pierce and voice with Stephen Swanson, Katherine Eberle, Julia Broxholm, and Susan McBerry. Born just south of Seattle, Lisa is an outdoor enthusiast and triathlete.
