Advertising’s ‘Big Six’ find Common Ground at Lions IN AN unprecedented step for

the global communications industry, the world’s biggest advertising and marketing groups will today put aside their differences at the Cannes Lions Festival to launch a pioneering initiative in support of the Sustainable Development Goals

(SDGs) adopted at the United Nations last year. At the instigation of UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon, the chief executives of Dentsu, Havas, IPG, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP will join him on stage after he finishes speaking at the Cannes Debate – traditionally a session

hosted annually by Sir Martin Sorrell – which takes place at noon in the Palais des Festivals. United in front of their industry peers, the industry’s six most influential figures will pledge their shared commitment to deploying the power of the creative industries to TURN TO P.4

‘No algorithm’ for great content IF YOU want to learn about the

future of entertainment, you could do much worse than listen to one of its veterans — Les Moonves, CBS president and CEO. Speaking to MediaLink chairman and CEO Michael Kassan in the opening session of the first-ever Lions Entertainment, the head of the pioneering $14bn broadcaster and content creator provided an insightful assessment into how his company is making more money, despite the ongoing impact of digital disruption. At the heart of Moonves’ strategy is an absolute belief in the impor-

tance of content — and his own ability to identify and support a great television show. “We have a lot of data and it would be stupid not to use it,” he said. “But there is no algorithm for content. Don’t give me a number and say this show should be on the air. I don’t believe it. When you do that, my skillset is gone.” This is not to say that Moonves is resistant to change — he just needs to be convinced it is change for the better. Entertainment, the latest addition to the Cannes Lions family of events, launched yesterday morning. Designed to encourage a deeper conversation around creativity in music, sport, TV, film and gaming, it has seen an influx of top talent share insights and ideas across three stages in Palais II. Stars on show include Channing Tatum, Mark Ronson and Martin Campbell. Unveiling the event, Cannes Lions CEO Phil Thomas said: “In recent years, we’ve had a number of entertainment companies coming to Cannes Lions. Last year, we realised how seriously they were taking it as a platform for talking to brands so we decided to launch Lions Entertainment. We’ve been delighted with the level of engagement from the entertainment industry, which is evident in the range of companies and individuals involved with the new event.” His comments were endorsed by Jennifer Breithaupt, managing director of media, advertising and global entertainment at Citi, the event’s headline sponsor. “We’re so excited to be part of this new event,” she said. “As a brand, entertainment is critical to us because it allows us to reach and connect with consumers around the world. We hope to be inspired by this year’s Lions Entertainment.” The event kicked off with an insightful conversation between MediaLink CEO Michael Kassan and CBS Corporation CEO Les Moonves, one of the most far-sighted executives in the modern media business. Moonves set the tone for the two-day event by declaring that Cannes Lions is “important for anyone in creativity, media, technology, brands and communication. Everyone you TURN TO P.4

Meet Inarritu and be ‘inspired by him’

ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU: “DEALING WITH STUFF”

INTRODUCING Alejandro González Iñárritu to the Ogilvy & Inspire session yesterday, Tham Khai Meng, co-chairman and worldwide chief creative officer of Ogilvy & Mather admitted to being short of superlatives when it came to talking about the multi-award-winning film director. “’Superlative’, ‘immense’,

‘magisterial’ all seem a bit short of the mark when discussing Alejandro’s work,” he said. “But during an event where great ideas are the main currency, what we really have to do is to allow ourselves to be inspired by him, and admit the poverty of our own ideas in comparison to his. A measure of his talent is that he has won 14

Lions including a Titanium and a Grand Prix — and he didn’t even know until he arrived here this week.” Talking about The Revenant — the frontier western starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which won the Mexican director his second Oscar in a row — Inarritu said that the film had caused him multiple problems, many of which he could not prepare for, since they involved working around nature and the weather. “They were things we simply had to deal with because they were part of the look that I wanted to achieve,” he said. “And then there were the fight scenes with lots of actors, which presented their own set of challenges. Basically, we were dealing with different stuff every single day, such as how to shoot a person on a horse. A horse is very big, so do you pull back? But if you do and you do a close-up on the actor, all you see is their head bobbing up and down.”

public screening of clips from Transformers: Combiner Wars, the new digital-only series based on Hasbro’s iconic shape-shifting toys, was unveiled yesterday at Lions Entertainment. The clips were from the first

part of the trilogy being produced by Machinima, the digital entertainment network aimed at video gamers, for Hasbro. It is scheduled to debut this summer on the US mobilefirst platform Go90. “Transformers has a rich history, so we wanted to do something disruptive,” said Stephen Davis, Hasbro’s chief content officer. “Machinima was the perfect partner for us to extend that storytelling.”

Why P&G needed a word with itself T E C H N O L O G Y allows brands to do some amazing things, said Procter & Gamble (P&G) chief brand officer Marc Pritchard in his Cannes Lions session, Raising The Creative Bar. “But it’s also bringing some awful guests to the party in the shape of unwanted and uninspiring advertising.” P&G used to be as guilty as anyone, Pritchard admitted, but decided to do something about it. “We took a look at ourselves and asked why we had fallen into the same trap as others. And we realised it was because we were creating more and more ads to try to

D7 3+D.indd 3

cut through in the digital age. But all we were doing was adding to the noise.” So P&G decided to raise the bar on creativity by adopting a new three-pronged strategy that would be the key to all its brand communications. “We focused on expressing the brand as a creative canvas; we placed greater emphasis on elevating the craft; and we embraced creativity as the human endeavour that it is,” Pritchard said. The result of this emphasis on creativity has been a transformation in the business performance of leading P&G brands, including Pantene,

P&G’S MARC PRITCHARD

Tide, Ariel, Secret, SK-II and Always. “With a lot of our recent work, we have changed the conversation around our brands and driven their popularity to new levels,” Pritchard said. “We don’t accept mediocrity any more.”

See It Be It… Done It P

ARTICIPANTS in the Cannes Lions See It Be It female creative leadership programme celebrated the end of the four-day event on Wednesday night. Fourteen “high-potential creative women” joined this year’s initiative, invited to Cannes Lions for an exclusive programme of talks, jury room access and mentoring. The programme was set up three years ago in response to “the dramatic lack of female creative leaders attending Cannes”, said See It Be It Ambassador for 2016, Sarah Watson, chief strategy officer, BBH New York. “Access and exposure are a huge part of the path to leadership. If you can’t ‘see’ the sort of leader that you might become, the less likely you are to ‘be it’. The programme puts 14 handpicked future leaders, from all over the world and the industry, right into the powerful epicentre of the Cannes experience.” She added: “It is the very best of Cannes laid on exclusively for those who the industry needs most.” When the initiative began in 2014, a handful of delegates were picked through word-of-mouth; but in its first three years it has developed considerably. “This year we had 500 applicants from all over the world,” Watson said. “The lack of female creative leadership has become much more widely acknowledged, and it is now about the speed of action and change. The See It Be It class of 2016 are only 14 but with the power of the very best of Cannes behind them, their impact will reverberate around the world.”

help address the world’s most pressing problems. The new initiative, which is called Common Ground, will begin with a global advertising campaign, with space donated by key business and thought-leadership publications. Following the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, each group will focus on amplifying a specific area of the SDGs over the

coming year. Ban Ki-moon urged competing firms from other sectors to follow suit and make their own Common Ground commitments to supporting the SDGs. “Common Ground is breaking ground,” he said,

speaking ahead of The Cannes Debate. “This initiative is not only about the advertising industry’s considerable influence in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals around the world. By putting aside their differences, these companies are also setting a powerful example for others to follow.” In addition to the ad campaign, the ‘Big Six’ advertising and marketing ser vices groups have agreed to provide a development fund for each of the winning ideas in the Cannes Young Lions competition, which this year is devoted solely to the SDGs. These funds will be used to develop the concepts and give them the strongest possible chance of being put into practice. This is the first time the Young Lions have been given a development fund. The Big Six will also encourage other industries to find their own Common Ground. In a joint statement, Tadashi Ishii, CEO and president of Dentsu; Yannick Bolloré, chairman and CEO of Havas; Michael Roth, chairman and

CEO of IPG; John Wren, president and CEO of Omnicom; Maurice Lévy, chairman and CEO of Publicis Groupe; and Sir Martin Sorrell, founder and CEO of WPP, said: “The Common Ground initiative recognises that the global issues the UN has identified transcend commercial rivalry. By working in partnership to support the Sustainable Development Goals, we want to demonstrate that even fierce competitors can set aside their differences in order to serve a wider common interest. We hope others in and beyond our own business decide to do the same.” ‘NO ALGORITHM’ FOR GREAT CONTENT CONTINUED...

month, he said: “When [my team] first suggested it to me, I was Dr No. I gave them 10 reasons why it wasn’t a good idea. But they came back with reasons why I was wrong. So now we have an extraordinary product that will showcase original series, including Star Trek.” One of biggest reasons why Moonves would have been wary of launching an SVOD-style

service is the reaction of advertisers, which account for 50% of the company’s revenues. However, he said it is crucial for everyone to embrace change: “It behoves us to work hand in hand with advertisers. But they have to change, as we have had to change. My sense is that advertisers realise this is a great new world and are adapting for all of the available platforms.” Moonves told Lions Entertainment delegates that the TV business is adapting well to the new media landscape. He also used his session to take a swipe at the ailing movie business: “We’re kicking the film industry’s butts big time. People have been underestimating TV for decades, but we are still thriving.”

need to talk to is in Cannes this week, so I’m honoured to be here.” The event played host to some of the international media industry’s major players — but also some of its great disruptors. On the Inspiration Stage, Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins shared the spotlight with the multitalented Mindy Kaling, with the two of them discussing the migration of Kaling’s show, The Mindy Project, from broadcast television to streaming. ZEFR, meanwhile, hosted a session during which it discussed the growing cultural significance of YouTubers. Other companies to feature at the event included Spotify, Activision Blizzard, Sony Music, Vivendi, FremantleMedia, Maker Studios, Shazam, Mastercard and Coca-Cola. The latter hosted a session called A Story About Survival: Content Collisions To Stay Relevant, in which Emmanuel Seuge, senior vice-president of content, talked about the different way his company is approaching the creative process.

Vice’s advice: put trust in the next generation but don’t fear tradition Snapped

TRUST your interns if you want to build something new and unique. This was the main message from Vice founder and CEO Shane Smith at yesterday’s seminar, Making Content We Care About. The Vice-hosted session also featured filmmaker and Viceland co-president Spike Jonze. “Every 10 years, we hand the company over to the next generation, because it means that you get something different,” Smith said. “But it also means that they don’t have muc h exper ience, which is where Spike comes in. He’s like a f inishing school for film craft, and he’s prepared to sit with these young people and help them with the scripts, the editing and all that stuff.” Ironically, when Vice first started making TV news for young people, it was told by everyone that the young

SHANE SMITH

aren’t interested in news. “So we started making news in our own style,” Smith said. “Then all those same

people could talk about was what we were wearing or our tattoos or that they didn’t like the hipster angle

or our attitude. But what they were missing was that what we were doing was a sort of de-stratification of the status quo. That, and the fact that we proved that young people do watch the news if you do it right.” He admitted, however, that when Vice first started making TV content “it wasn’t visually riveting, because we were magazine people. So we had a lot to learn.” But that does not mean that Vice does not play by the rules when they are relevant: “We use traditional storytelling when the topic or situation demands it,” Jonze said. “But for a show like Munchies with Action Bronson, it really doesn’t need that sort of treatment. In fact, even the editing is done in a way that suits Action’s tone and style rather than in an orthodox manner.”

Tatum takes friendly route to market

CHANNING TATUM: ‘I LOVE STORYTELLING’

D7 6+D.indd 6

A-LIST movie actor Channing Tatum joins a trail of celebrities with the imminent launch of his own vodka brand. But, as he told delegates on Thursday, he has created an alternative identity that resonates with his own values, rather than “power and celebrity”. The result of Tatum’s passion project is Born And Bred, a home-crafted vodka made from Idaho potatoes and the glacial waters of the Grand Teton mountains, and bred by Grand Teton Distillery. It launches in Europe next month. “When Channing brought this to us we quickly realised that we were in a crowded market,” said Larry Vincent, chief branding officer of United Talent Agency. “Our mission was to stay authentic to Tatum’s vision and tell a less formal story of a drink that friends could share

together. It wasn’t a brand for contrived environments.” Vincent said that the whiskey brands, such as Jack Daniel’s, are much more successful at harnessing the power of storytelling to create a strong brand attachment than vodka brands. Hands-on in the creative process, Tatum created a strapline for Born And Bred — ‘Cross my heart and hope for mischief’ — and selected the jackalope, a mythical animal of North American folklore, to represent the product. “I wanted our storytelling to represent what I do,” Tatum said. “I go to the woods and friend’s houses — I’m not really in the clubs. And I love storytelling. So, for me, it was about creating an identifiable world. I want to do this differently and create a community of real friends.”

YOUTUBE launches its Brand Partner Program to train ad agencies and their clients on how to use its digital tools to create high-end video content. Kelly Merryman, vicepresident of YouTube content partnerships, said: “Watching videos is the number-three thing we do after work and sleep. We’ll be able to train agencies on the fundamentals of video production to crack the top-10 videos [in terms of views and subscriptions].”

MIRNA Bucevic, producer and head of RED Production’s Zagreb office, is in Cannes to promote Croatia as a country “with Mediterranean hedonism but Germanic efficiencies”. She said: “We have a beautiful country with professional crews, a variety of actors, and great production values on a reasonable budget. We’ve been involved in advertising production and post-production in Central and South-East Europe since 2003, but we are keen to attract more film productions with Croatia’s 20% incentive.”

How Droga became Plank’s knight in shining armour

UNDER ARMOUR’S KEVIN PLANK (LEFT) WITH DROGA5’S DAVID DROGA

YOU’VE seen its award-winning ad featuring the kickboxing supermodel Gisele Bündchen, which was part of the trailer for the Matt Damon movie The Martian. And it is here at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity to tell us: “Brands, brands, brands; everything comes down to brands.”

The company is Under Armour (UA), arguably the most innovative sports-apparel brand on the market. Everyone from athletes to entertainment celebrities want to be seen wearing its tech-centric sports gear. But founder and CEO Kevin Plank disclosed yesterday that, without advertising and a very trusted agency, his company

would not be where it is today: a former start-up that is on track to be a $5bn company by the end of this year. Plank and David Droga, creative chairman and founder of Droga5 — UA’s global agency of record — were on stage to discuss how the client/agency dynamic is key to any growing global business.

“A brand’s mission is to give you things you never thought you needed and, once you have them, you wonder how you ever lived without them,” Plank said. “Brands have to be part of your business. You can’t be creative just for the sake of it. The most important thing is how to articulate and execute that message.” He added that Droga5’s efforts to understand the UA brand has been essential to the company’s growth. Explaining why his agency enjoyed working with UA, Droga said: “How many brands have a point of view that authentically goes all the way through its products?” But the real hard work began the moment UA entrusted Droga5 with its brand’s future, he added: “The most intimidating thing a client can do is to trust its agency. But I personally like that pressure. As the agency, when someone gives you that leeway, make sure you do the right thing by them.”

Comedy isn’t always a laugh THERE IS always a risk when you give three talented comedians a topic to talk about that they will digress. So it was with McCann Worldgroup and The Paley Center for Media’s session Creativity Is The Only Way To Survive, which featured Rashida Jones, Keegan-Michael Key and Rob Delaney. But while the session did not exactly deliver against its title, it more than made up for this with a series of frank and amusing insights into the nature of creativity and comedy. One big discussion point was how to get the balance right between your personal vision and the audience’s expectations. Jones, known for Parks And Recreation, said there is such a demand for content that it is sometimes

D7 7+D.indd 7

difficult to keep sight of where your creativity springs from: “So I really believe in having a safe place where you can just go and be creative, where you play and be dumb and don’t worry about the outcome.” Key, star of the Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele, agreed, but stressed the importance of also having a sounding board — friends or colleagues who can tell you “when what you are doing is too esoteric”. This segued into a debate about the importance of owning your creativity, but being able to listen. Delaney said: “With Catastrophe [the Channel 4 UK sitcom that Delaney co-creates with Sharon Horgan], I had this fear of becoming this walled off-guy who wouldn’t listen. So

KEEGAN-MICHAEL KEY

I’m a real believer in humility.” The debate then turned to an insightful discussion about diversity, with Key saying diversity leads to more layered sto-

ries. “We’re all wearing blinders of bias that we don’t know we are wearing,” he said. “That’s why we need to hire people from different cultures.”

NARRATOR in an endless corridor introduced the impending, inseparable nature of art and artificial intelligence (AI) in Saatchi & Saatchi’s New Directors’ Showcase (NDS) yesterday. The NDS reel concealed one ‘homespun’ AI film among the selection of new ground-breaking talent. Challenging the audience to guess the ‘imposter’ in a version of a Turing Test, Saatchi posed an uncomfortable question: what if machines could do with creativity what you could do? Nineteen directors were featured on the reel, including Uri Lotan and Yoav Shtibelman’s cartoon world for Jane Bordeaux’s track Ma’agalim, Jake Dypka’s Embarrassed collaboration with UK poet Hollie McNish about the daily battle for breastfeeding mothers and Studio Smack’s official music video for De Staat’s Witch Doctor. The AI-directed film was revealed online as M83 Go following the NDS. The music video was psychedelic in style and featured holographic effects. “We wanted to see if AI has the power to reach our creative standards,” said Saatchi’s Andy Gulliman, the NDS creator and producer. “I don’t want people to feel threatened but rather to look together at how we might work with AI and be supported by innovation.” Saatchi’s bold AI experiment brought together the tech and creative talent of Team One and Zoic Labs. Fittingly, the AI film debuted on the birthday of AI pioneer Alan Turing, who once said: “Those who can imagine anything, can create the impossible.”

‘INVESTING WORKS. YOU CAN’T CUT YOUR WAY TO PROSPERITY’ IN THE countdown to today’s EU referendum result, WPP founder and CEO Sir Martin Sorrell was prepared to stick his neck out (“and probably get my head chopped off…”) that the Remain campaign would win the day. “My view is that we’ll see a small majority for Remain — I’ll take a guess and say about 53% to 47%,” he said. “But it’s been a very difficult campaign and there’s been no killer proponent one way or the other; no killer debate or killer series of facts. I think Remain, which I favour personally, has focused too much on the economy rather than the emotional issues of sovereignty and immigration, which Leave has exploited mercilessly.” As a second-generation immigrant — his grandparents came to the UK from Eastern Europe — Sorrell is a strong believer in the positive impact of immigration on innovation and entrepreneurialism: “Immigrants add to the economy. I don’t believe they detract from it. And I don’t believe isolationism works: it’s better to be inside the tent than outside it. Britain in Europe is going to grow faster than Britain outside Europe, and not just in the short or medium term. I think that’s a definite.” Back at the Lions and today is a ground-breaking one on the Cannes stage. Sorrell is participating in one of the week’s centrepiece events, The Cannes Debate, which this year brings together the advertising industry’s Big Six at the invitation of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to pledge their collective support for sustainable development goals (see front page). Despite strong currency headwinds and a low-growth, cost-focused advertising market, WPP turned

in another record-breaking performance in 2015, posting pre-tax profits of £1.49bn, up 2.8% on 2014. So how did they do it? “With difficulty,” Sorrell admitted. “I don’t want to be negative, but it’s a world that’s not growing as fast as people would like. It’s a world where there’s very little inflation and limited pricing power for clients and therefore a focus on costs. It’s a world where there are disruptors, where there are zero-based cost budgeters, where there are activist investors. And it’s a world where the average life expectancy of a CEO is about six or seven years and a CMO three or four years, which means you almost have a political cycle, with people making decisions based on how long their view is. So yes, it’s a difficult environment.” Citing the 2016 BrandZ report into the world’s top-100 most valuable brands, which WPP and the Financial Times have compiled for the last 11 years, Sorrell said it is clear that “companies that innovate and invest in brands grow their top line faster. So investing works and shows that you can’t cut your way to prosperity. What really makes the difference in the longer term is investing in innovation.” WPP’s response has been to identify “those parts of the world geographically and functionally” that have been expanding the furthest and fastest. Geographically, the Next Eleven economies, which are

“growing faster than the mature markets of the US and Western Europe”, are a focus. On the functional side, WPP’s media and digital businesses have been the strongest performers. While Sorrell is not expecting much to change in 2016, he also sees no real cause for pessimism: “The fundamental [global] economy is growing at about 3.0%-3.5%, which is a slight tightening from what we’ve

seen, and I think it will continue at that rate. I see no reason for an upside breakout, but nor do I see any reason for a downside breakout, meaning a recession.” And he is also prepared to stick his neck out on another political cliff-hanger — the US election. He is putting his money on Clinton: “The most powerful thing about Hilary is that she’d be the first female US president. That will get women’s votes.”

Sir Martin Sorrell

FRIDAY / JUNE 24 / 2016

NEWS

‘NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL MODEL FOR BRANDED ENTERTAINMENT’ Branded entertainment is a big talking point at this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. And so it should be, writes DAMIEN MARCHI, global head of content at Havas Media Group — branded content is a relatively new area and few brands have cracked it THE CANNES Lions is launching a new Entertainment Lions category and a programme of events to discuss how brands can produce “unskippable creativity”. This comes after the Branded Content Lions were scrapped following their failure to produce any Grand Prix winners for two years in a row. The Festival guide says: “The marketing communications industry has a real problem creating branded entertainment that anyone wants to watch.” It’s true. Too many brands are looking for shortterm solutions: tie-ups with YouTube “influencers” that do little to build brand value in the long-term, celebrities who are used for instant gain and poor-quality content created in disconnected silos. Brands have to move on from simply focusing on influencers and celebrities and embrace a more rounded approach to entertainment. The good news is that marketers are starting to understand the enormity of the challenges they face in creating branded entertainment that audiences want to watch. Lego and Red Bull have been doing it well for years. Recently, PepsiCo, Mondelez and Marriott Hotels made huge commitments by launching their own in-house content studios. Marriott’s Two Bellmen movie — produced in-house — comes to mind. The commitment Marriott is making to content marketing shows a concerted attempt to combine audience-pleasing entertainment with global brand promotion. To create high-quality entertainment, brands need to consider their consumers’ lives, interests and passion points,

and to offer them things they care about. If I as a brand bring you what you need or want by informing you or entertaining you, then you will engage with me in return. That’s true for any relationship and its true for content marketing too. But developing a content strategy takes time and commitment. It requires effort and dedication to understand the stories that your brand should tell and should not tell, to find the angle through which your brand should try to express itself and to discover the topics and themes it should try to own. At Havas Media Group, we tell brands they have to become masters in three areas: 1. Everything related to owned content and platforms where the brand is talking about itself, such as website, social platforms and product packaging. This is an area that is usually managed by the marketing team. 2. Listening to consumers, engaging in conversations with them and curating those

conversations. This is managed by the PR, or social or digital departments. 3. Working with third parties to create content partnerships, whether for print, TV, film, music or native advertising on digital. This is the work of the media team. A successful content strategy creates synergies between these three areas. So when brands

11

create a piece of content on their own platform, it needs to be a compelling enough story to provoke a third party to carry on the conversation and consumers to engage with it. Agencies are working to help clients get to grips with this approach to branded entertainment and to find the best ways forward on what is likely to become the best way of engaging with consumers. One question is whether clients want to internalise or externalise production. There will be no one-size-fits-all model for creating branded entertainment. Each brand will need to find the way of working that suits its own internal structure and objectives. The role of media agencies will be crucial. Every content strategy involves great creativity and equally brilliant media placement and planning. My background is in content production and marketing for FremantleMedia, working on franchises such as The X Factor, Got Talent and Idols, as well as original digital content (including launching SortedFood, the world’s second-most successful YouTube cooking channel after Jamie Oliver). I’ve seen what it takes to produce great content. Now marketers have the task of creating fantastic, crowd-pleasing entertainment that gets audiences rewarding their brands with approval and respect. That will give the Cannes crowd something to talk about and ensure the Entertainment Lions find campaigns worthy of the Grand Prix for years to come.

AXE’S RIK STRUBEL AND 72ANDSUNNY’S STEPHANIE FEENEY

MODEL AND SOCIAL ACTIVIST SHAUN ROSS

Model and activist Shaun Ross helps Axe to re-find its magic FASHION icon and social activist Shaun Ross is the new face of Axe’s global ‘Find Your Magic’ campaign. The exclusive partnership between the male-grooming brand and the world’s first male albino model was announced today following the launch of Axe’s radical new repositioning. “The campaign is about celebrating individuality,” said Rik Strubel, Axe Global vice-president. “If you feel great in your

skin, you win. Shaun’s courageous attitude and achievements prove that guys are the best, most successful versions of themselves when they find and embrace what makes them unique.” Strubel said that, after 20 or so years, it was clear The Axe Effect strategy had to mature as it was losing its relevance, appealing to an increasingly younger demographic. “Our ads have traditionally shown women

chasing the men who use our products,” he said. “Although our message was about boosting confidence, it was also about male conquest. Sex is so much of a commodity now in our instant world with digital hook-up services like Tinder. We wanted to distance ourselves from that and explore attractiveness in terms of embracing the power within oneself.” 72andSunny’s director of strategy, Stephanie Feeney, said it

is humbling for brands when audiences start to tune out. “We have often talked about gender as a duality,” she said. “It’s time for brands and marketers to have a conversation about male identity and better understand the changing role of men.” Shaun Ross is speaking at 72andSunny’s keynote this afternoon, entitled Masculinity Today: The Dramatic Shift And The New Normal.

Dress better while getting better

STEVE MIDTTUN: “LOOK GOOD WHILE RECOVERING”

US-BASED Redwave is in Cannes to tell brand-owners in the fashion and consumerhealth sectors that its “recovery-wear” technology is the future of clothing. The company has invented a technology that can be infused directly into fabrics to manu-

D7 14+D.indd 14

facture clothing that is not only comfortable to wear, but that is also able to accelerate the rate at which the body recovers from injury. Redwave president and founder Steven Midttun says the tech’s application has been so impressive that his company

has clinched an agreement with Under Armour, arguably one of the biggest direct investors in sports-wearable tech today. “Whether you’re a professional athlete, an amateur running in a 5K marathon or just a weekend warrior, if the

body has broken down and you’re suffering from chronic pain, you can still look good while recovering,” Midttun said. The far-infrared (FIR) technology used in Redwave clothing is mixed with bioceramic material, which is known for its therapeutic benefits when used in hip-replacement surgery and dental implants. By infusing that combination into a fabric’s ink, the resulting garment is able enhance the recovery process. Pending the appropriate regulatory approvals, Redwave’s future plans include incorporating its technology into bedding products, such as mattresses.

CCORDING to Carat Global chief strategy officer Sanjay Nazerali, we too easily forget the importance of context. “ “Context makes content meaningful,” he said. “For example, I don’t love chocolate all the time. There are certain times of day when I enjoy it. So how can a marketing person determine when the right moment is to try to sell me some?” Mood plays a significant role in creating context, but knowing what mood someone is in has, until recently, been pretty much impossible to second guess. Now, however, Spotify allows us to tune in to what a person is listening to. “And that, broadly speaking, can also give us an idea of what mood the listener is in,” Nazerali said. “At the least, it’s considerably more useful to a marketer than the six emoticons on Facebook.” He added: “We already know what our brands mean, but the point at which that meaning is relevant to consumers is the tricky part. Being able to match your brand to the mood of the consumer is very powerful. As Kinsey so rightly said: ‘Marketing’s ask is to reach people at the moment of maximum influence’.”

LION OF ST. MARK

17

COMES FIRST’ Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity announced in February that it will honour Marcello Serpa with the Lion Of St. Mark at this year’s Festival. The award will be the 161st time Serpa has been recognised in Cannes. GARY SMITH reports

M

ARCELLO Serpa has created numerous award winning campaigns for both Brazilian and international clients. He is Brazil’s most honoured art director, with 160 Cannes Festival Lions in his trophy cabinet — including Latin America’s first-ever Grand Prix, for the Guarana campaign in 1993. He has served on juries four times, twice as president, and during his time at AlmapBBDO the company won Agency Of The Year three times. After success at GGK, DPZ and DM9, Serpa moved to AlmapBBDO in 1993, where together with José Luiz Madeira, they brought the agency out of deep decline and built it into one of the most successful agencies in Sao Paulo. Over two decades later, Serpa is recognised as the most awarded art director in Brazil, and his Grand Prix-winning work has included the 1993 print campaign for Guarana and the 2010 print campaign for Billboard, ‘Britney’, ‘Eminem’, ‘Marilyn’, ‘Bono’ and ‘Amy’. When Serpa and Madeira left Almap last year, BBDO Worldwide president and CEO Andrew Robertson said: “It is simply impossible to overstate the impact and contribution that Marcello and José Luiz have had on the advertising business in Brazil, across the world, and for BBDO worldwide.” Serpa will be presented with the Lion Of St. Mark during the awards ceremony on Saturday, but many in the industry are wondering what his intentions are after that. “I’ve always

D7 SERPA+D.indd 17

been a surfer, so I’m going to spend a year in Hawaii riding the waves, as well as doing some painting and design work, then we’ll see what comes along after that,” he said. Commenting on the award, Serpa admitted to having been “very surprised” by the announcement. “Of course I’m extremely happy to have been honoured in this way. I didn’t expect to receive what is, without doubt, the biggest award in the industry,” he said. “It’s like the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame x 10, and I guess it’s as much a recognition of our contribution to the wider industry as for the work.” Looking back across his career, Serpa said that winning his first Lion was just as much of a surprise as being awarded the Lion Of St. Mark. “The first time I won a Lion was just a massive shock, it came out of nowhere. I was 29 years-old and all I knew was that I had done the best I could, then suddenly I’m being praised by industry figures all over the world.” Despite such an exceptional and awardstudded track record, Serpa has some clear favourites: “I’m very proud of the ‘Double Checked’ campaign for Volkswagen — where the two ticks form the VW logo — that was a very special one for me. And I’m also particularly proud to have been associated with the campaigns for Havaianas, partly because the work was good, but also because we played a part in turning a very local brand into a global one.“ So, even though he is not currently actively involved in the industry that he clearly loves, what advice would he give

Marcello Serpa in 2008, when Almap BBDO was among the 10 most awarded agencies. Photo: Lions Daily News/360Medias

to a young creative? “It’s such a very different industry to the one that I joined,” he says. “Mainly in terms of the amount of tools that are available. Today’s creatives have a huge canvas with an amazing amount of possibilities open to them. But it’s important to stay true to the work, because that always comes first. The canvas is for later, when you’ve taken care of the important stuff.”

Spain can offer almost any look – desert, coastline, forest, countryside, mountains, industrial and urban. Add to that the fact that overall budgets are 20-30% lower than in most of Europe, and business has been rising dramatically over the last two years. GARY SMITH reports

T

ONI SCHULZ, executive

producer at Barcelona-based Mamma Team, confirms that business is booming. “Generally right now it’s very good indeed with around 80% of our work coming from Germany, which of course means that we end up doing a lot of car commercials,” he says. Barcelona has been a popular urban location for car commercials, and is well known for its ease of shooting and easy-to-acquire permits, but things are changing: “There was a time when a downtown area of the city known as El

D7 SPAIN+D.indd 38

Born was extremely popular for car shoots, because it’s compact, central and charming — but it was happening too often, and there was a revolt among the locals. So now shoots there are limited to two per month to cut down on the disruption, and frankly we never use that part of town. We tend to prefer the office-to-coast look or a beautiful house.” One of Schulz’s favourite spots of the last few months was a car shoot in Barcelona that demanded an extra special effort: “It was a five-day shoot for the Kia Niro Hybrid, but in order to

avoid the typical ‘car in Barcelona’ look we carried out extensive location scouting beforehand, plus we wanted to show that the car fits into any environment.” The shoot involved blocking the Via Laietana, a main artery that runs down to the sea, with the car being driven down the street accompanied by a van with a Russian Arm mounted on it. “You have to get up very early and even then you don’t have much time,” Schulz adds. “But I love that street, we also used it for an Audi Quattro ad where we employed 30 blockers to stop people walking on the pavement. The whole scene was utterly deserted apart from the car.” Philip Bolus, CEO and executive producer at Barcelona-based Goodgate Productions agrees with Schulz: “2015 was our busiest year ever with a total of 42 shoots, and 2016 has continued in

much the same way,” he says. “Normally in a good year we’d expect to be involved in around 35 shoots, so clearly 2015 was exceptional.” The abundance of top-flight footballers in Spain’s La Liga means that brands like Nike, Adidas and Samsung visit the country regularly: ”There’s regular demand for access to names like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to appear in major campaigns, but clients have to realise that there are huge demands on their time, so they are not easy to pin down, and they are likely to change their schedule even when there is a crew of 120 people waiting for them,” Bolus says. Alongside the amazing footballing talent, Spain also has some of the very best horse people in the world. “We were filming a spot for BMW in Almeria with horses, and the handlers were truly astonishing,” Bolus adds. “It’s not surprising that they are so in-demand for both commercials and feature films. Another major positive of shooting here is that the talent is very flexible about buy-outs, much more so than in many countries, and generally the country really is cost-effective. We have offices in Chile and Argentina, so we’re often asked to provide costings for the same shoot in Spain and in South America, but it’s often Spain that gets the nod. We are also currently seeing US shoots coming back here now that the euro is weaker against the dollar.” The Mendips Corporation is also based in Barcelona but executive producer Mario Reinach also offers production services in Italy and Bulgaria: “I’m Italian so that connection is a natural one for the company, but we chose to open an office in Sofia because the value for money is amazing, roughly 20% cheaper than Spain. Plus we are a boutique company which makes it easier to keep our prices down generally.” Recent shoots include spots for five new Nissan models that were shot all over Spain: “The majority of our current work is car spots coming in from Japan, France, Italy and the US,” he says. “We also did a really enjoyable shoot for the Honda Africa Twin ‘adventure-class’ motorbike, which was an 18-day job with five days in Barcelona, 10 days in the rest of Spain and finally three days in Morocco. Even though some shoots are preferring to stay in Europe rather

than crossing the Mediterranean to North Africa, you simply cannot beat the dunes in the Sahara desert. Because we were shooting in the middle of nowhere, we hired a plane and took everything with us. It all went very smoothly and was a really satisfying job.” Another favourite job was Orangina’s Tora campaign shot in Cadaques: “The spot really looks like it was filmed in an Italian fishing village, but it was done just an hour from Barcelona,” he adds. Way down south in the Canary Islands, business is also very good indeed. “It’s our best year ever in terms of quantity and quality and also the sheer variety of work,” says Gadi Cimand, executive producer at Canary Productions. “We’ve just been doing an episode of Survivor,

there’s a Jaguar shoot that we’ve been working on for the last four months which combines multiple locations, and three different car models, and we also recently worked on fashion shoots for Calzedonia and Missoni. The Missoni shoot featured Christy Turlington and was shot by Viviane Sassen.” One aspect of shooting on the Canary Islands that is not often talked about is the quality of the talent, and the passion of the locals: “We were working on a spot for Suzuki which was very complex and involved multiple locations. most of which were in Santa Cruz — where they recently shot the latest Bourne film — these are areas that are often very crowded,” he says. “We were working mainly at night and the locals really don’t mind, they are so into it all and

love having crews and lights around. And the extras are really something here. We’ve had so many positive comments about the local talent.” Boudika Productions executive producer Izaskun Montilla agrees that this is a good time for the islands’ production sector: “In fact it’s been good for a few years,” she says. “One of our recent jobs for Vodafone was particularly interesting because we only had 10 days notice to get all the scouting done and the permits, and then the creative was constantly evolving as we were shooting, which presents major logistical challenges.” The final version of the spot featured a beach and lots of sea sports such as wind-surfing and jet-skiing: “We have a huge range of beaches here, with a variety of positions relative to the sun, some with palm trees, some with just rocks and some with mountains directly behind, plus we have white sand, and volcanic beaches with black sand. I particularly like the black sand because it creates a contrast with the white foam of the waves, and if you then put a strong colour on top of that it’s very striking.” Other recent shoots include Italian triathlon brand Arena, and shooting some jungle scenes for the

Spanish film Oro, by award-winning director Agustin Diaz Yanes. “We shot several jungle scenes in Anaga and in the Barranco de Badajoz ravine on Tenerife, both of them places where you can really create a tropical look.” Michael Friedl of Seven Islands Film has just finished a job for Paramount television which involved a crew and cast of 200: “We were shooting some scenes for Berlin Station, a new series for the Epix Channel staring Richard Armitage and Michelle Forbes,” he says. “It was a really big job for us. We

spent five days shooting a series of inserts for various episodes on Fuerteventura and Las Palmas. We created a South American-looking location, then an Arabic scene and also a concentration camp. They needed a waterfall and the only one that falls all year round is on Las Palmas, but it’s a mere 30-minute flight away from Fuerteventura. Generally were really impressed by how close all these different looks are to each other.” Alongside the proximity, shooting is all year round: “We have an office in Barcelona which is busy from April to September, and the work there is growing every year, but on the Canaries we just don’t have a winter as such, the temperature at Christmas is the equivalent of a typical spring temperature in Southern Europe,” he says. “We regard ourselves as Canary Islands specialists, and we love the fact that the tax rebates and incentives are really helping to grow the business. One thing I’m very proud of is that the German and Spanish mentalities are quite different and 70% of our work comes from Germany, but when you understand both mindsets you can create something very special by combining the best of both.”

FOCUS ON HUNGARY

45

on i t c a r tt A THE BIG

Hungary is one of the world’s top production locations. Recent projects include Ridley Scott’s blockbuster The Martian, BBC period drama The Last Kingdom, and a string of TV commercials for agencies and brands from Western Europe, the US, India and Asia-Pacific. So what’s the big attraction? ANDY FRY finds out

L

OOKING back at Hungary’s

development into a world-class production hub, Zita Kisgergely, a producer at sister companies PPM (commercials) and Flatpack Films (feature films), says the story began in the 1990s with the arrival of the commercials producers “who were really excited to see a totally fresh area open up behind the Eastern European wall. After that, feature films like Munich came here and really changed the way people looked at Hungary. Companies including Mid Atlantic Films and Pioneer Productions had a key role in bringing high-profile productions here and they continue to be important players.” Kisgergely says Hungary further enhanced its appeal with the introduction of an attractive film and TV tax rebate in the middle of the last decade. Subsequently increased to 25% in 2014 (with the potential to rise to 30% in certain scenarios), it is regarded as one of the best incentives in Europe and has played a major part in winning work from Hollywood. “As far as I know, only Belgium offers something similar in Europe,” she adds. While the tax credit has been crucial in winning work, there are other factors that have underpinned the country’s success as a production hub, according to Abel Koves, a producer with Budapest-based production services

D7 HUNGARY+D.indd 45

company Film Positive. “Locations and studios are some of the biggest attractions,” he says, “and there is also a great balance between quality and costs. Our crews are used to international productions, speak great English and are considered to be hard working, reliable and creative.” In terms of locations, the jewel in the crown is capital city Budapest, which offers a mix of baroque, classical and art-nouveau architecture. Beautiful in its own right, the city also appeals to international producers because it makes a perfect double for other European cities, says Csanad Darvas, a producer at another production-services company, Orchestra: “Hungary’s eclectic architectural heritage means we can do Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Prague or a generic European location very easily — and much more with some set dressing.”

‘The Glow’ campaign for Mumbai producer Curious

Abel Koves: “OUR CREWS ARE USED TO

INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS, SPEAK GREAT ENGLISH AND ARE CONSIDERED TO BE HARD WORKING, RELIABLE AND CREATIVE”

In fact, Darvas is probably underselling Budapest’s versatility, the city having also doubled for the likes of Moscow, Monte Carlo and Italy in recent times. Big-budget productions to have taken advantage of Budapest’s chameleon-like qualities include Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (doubling as London), The Borgias (as Italy), A Good Day To Die Hard (as Moscow) and Bel Ami (as Paris). Not to be overlooked either are Hungary’s internal locations, Darvas adds: “We have empty hospitals, castles and many more buildings ready to shoot. Also, a good number of homes are basically ready to shoot without much need for set dressing.” If set dressing is required, however, it is not a problem because Hungarians have been building great sets since before the Second World War. “Our set-construction crews usually work on at least one Hollywood film each year, and they are very up to the task,” Darvas says. “It’s the same for crews. Most crew members who work on international commercials also spend time on huge feature productions, and are up to international standards.”

23/06/2016 9:47 PM

46

FOCUS ON HUNGARY

Hungary is also home to a wide array of forests, rivers, lakes, mountains, vineyards, agricultural fields and beautiful towns, Kisgergely adds. “And if you absolutely can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s possible to cross the border to countries like Austria, Romania or Croatia.” A three-hour drive, for example, could get you to Transylvania — or to the Croatian coast, which has been used recently in the HBO epic Game Of Thrones. As for facilities, Koves highlights the state-of-the-art studios run by Origo Film Group and Korda. “Korda’s underwater tank is only equalled by Pinewood London,” she says. “And there are quite a few smaller studios as well.” Koves says there is a good mix of feature films, TV series and commercials coming into Hungary. TVCs are not covered by the incentive, “but with costs 25%-30% lower than Western Europe, Hungary is still attractive”, he adds. Proof of this claim is the number of high-profile jobs that appear on production showreels. Pioneer, mentioned above, has been involved in

Csanad Darvas: “WE

HAVE HAD JOBS FROM SOUTH KOREA AND REQUESTS FROM CHINA AND AUSTRALIA. THEY ALL COME IN SEARCH OF THE EUROPEAN LOOK”

campaigns from brands including Adidas, Porsche, Audi, Virgin Atlantic and Southern Comfort, while recent Film Positive assignments include TVCs for Xbox, Sky Movies UK and Taco Bell. “We are also a trusted P&G partner, working for local and international P&G agencies. The latest P&G job, a spectacular Ariel TVC, is coming soon,” Koves says. At Orchestra, Darvas cites “a Monte Carlo ad, shot in two days, which was selected as the best romantic TVC shot in Budapest in 2015, and another ad for Cadbury Glow chocolate”. ‘The Glow’ production is a classic example of what Hungary is capable of, he adds, “because we basically took over the main square of a small town in southern Hungary”. The campaign was for Mumbai producer Curious and involved importing a Ferris wheel from the UK and shutting down the entire square for three days. “It was a challenge to keep every part of it under control, especially as the locals wanted a ride on the wheel,” he says. “This job couldn’t have been done anywhere else.” In terms of production nuts and bolts,

D7 HUNGARY+D.indd 46

FRIDAY / JUNE 24 / 2016

Hungary has a four-season weather system, with April to October the best months for filmmakers (unless you want white winters or the autumn fall). Koves says that the permitting system is “okay”. He adds: “You usually need six working days, but expect more if you need to close

LIONS DAILY NEWS

or divert traffic.” The situation with equipment is also pretty straightforward. “Kit is fine,” Koves says. “We have all the generally needed equipment and what we do not have in Budapest — like Russian arms or certain Panavision lenses — can easily be brought

MADE IN HUNGARY THE BORGIAS: This Canadian/Irish/ Hungarian co-pro for Showtime used Hungary to double as Italy. A renaissance set was built at Korda Studios, portraying locations such as the Vatican and Florence. Renaissance-style gates, courtyards, alleyways, interiors, cells and a piazza are still available on the backlot. GUINNESS: London-based agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and production company Infinity went to Hungary to shoot a Rugby World Cup TVC for Guinness. Directed by Tom Hooper, the ad took four days to shoot and involved 370 people. Serviced by Pioneer, the locations included Varpalota. THE LAST KINGDOM: This BBC drama, based on a series of novels by Bernard Cornwell, is set during the Viking invasion of England in the 9th century. Although some of the series was shot in the UK, the production also came to Hungary in 2014/2015. It is not the first swords-andshield period drama to have been based in the country. Pillars Of The Earth and World Without End also used Hungary to replicate UK scenery. SPECTRAL: Mid Atlantic Films has been instrumental in bringing productions such as The Borgias, Hercules and The Martian to Hungary. Most recently, it facilitated the production of feature film Spectral, about a special-ops team dispatched to fight supernatural beings. Origo Film Group and Korda Studios were both involved in the production, which also shot in nearby Slovakia.

SPY: This Melissa McCarthy/Jude Law comedy film visited Hungary in 2014 for two key reasons: tax incentives and Budapest’s ability to double for other cities. The action ranges from Washington DC to Paris to Rome but, for the most part, it was filmed against the backdrop of Budapest’s superb architecture, with locations including the Hungarian State Opera House and Ferenciek Square. Other locations included Lake Balaton, situated 135 km south west of Budapest, which was used to double as the Black Sea. TATA SKY: PPM serviced a TVC for Curious described as India’s longest-ever commercial (3.5 minutes). Created for DTH platform Tata Sky, it focused on a group of prisoners trying to escape from prison while the guards are distracted by an India-Pakistan cricket match. Curious considered several locations, including Alcatraz in San Francisco, but the need for flexible shooting times led them Budapest’s Kozma prison and Komarom Castle on the Slovakian border. VIRGIN ATLANTIC — ‘THE IDEA’: Rogue Films came to Hungary in 2015 to shoot a 90-second commercial for adam&eveDDB client Virgin Atlantic. Serviced by Pioneer, the TVC used a clever mix of studio construction and locations to create a fast-paced story that had a touch of the Guy Ritchie about it.

in on request. But all these are brought in on a regular basis. Rental companies include ARRI so, even if the equipment is booked, they can bring in necessary stuff very easily from other places.” Travel in general is also straightforward, Darvas says: “There are direct [and low cost] flights from EU cities. Then you have the same legislation, no visas and an excellent transport network.” As to the origin of Hungary’s commercials work, Western Europe is an important but by no means the only source of jobs.

Zita Kisgergely:

“THERE’S NOWHERE IN THE REGION THAT COMPARES TO BUDAPEST. IT HAS SUCH A RANGE OF TEXTURES AND COLOURS THAT IT’S LIKE A MOVIE SET” “We have had many jobs coming from India,” Darvas says. “This year the rupee is a bit down, so they are less likely to arrive. But we have also had some jobs from South Korea and requests from China and Australia. They all come in search of the European look.” Kisgergely says PPM does a lot of commercials work for Korean companies, such as Samsung and Hyundai. It has also recently completed a major piece of work for watch/ fountain pen brand Mont Blanc starring Hugh Jackman. The Australian star is clearly a fan of Budapest, having previously visited it for a Lipton Ice Tea TVC by production company Gorgeous. On the feature film side, meanwhile, Kisgergely agrees with Darvas that Indian producers are big fans of Hungary: “We have just finished working on an Indian feature film that lasted for a few months and also involved shooting in Austria and Croatia.”

THE STUDIOS KORDA STUDIOS: Located 30 km (18.6 miles) west of Budapest in the wine-making village of Etyek, Korda has six state-of-the-art sound stages, including one of the biggest in the world, with an area of 64,000 sq ft (5,945 sq m) and a net buildable height of 65 feet (20 metres). Korda also has extensive production accommodation/offices, warehouse and workshop areas, a huge water tank and a large amount of backlot space. Some of this space is empty so it can be used for set construction. There are also 10 ha (24.7 acres) of backlot sets featuring New York, renaissance and medieval architecture. ORIGO FILM GROUP: Formerly known as Raleigh Studios, this is a nine-studio complex based north-east of Budapest. Its biggest stage is 47,000 sq ft, but there are a number of other spaces in the 12,000-28,000 sq ft range. A one-stop shop, it also offers production services, post-production and equipment rental on site. It can also advise on financing and locations. Recent projects include A Good Day To Die Hard, Hercules and Inferno. Origo has an alliance with Bavaria Film Group in Germany to share film-production services.

One challenge with being so successful is that the demand for crew can be high in Hungary — a situation that also occurs in other popular production hubs such as the UK. “But this isn’t really a problem,” Kisgergely says, “because we are able to bring in talented crew from neighbouring countries like Croatia and Austria. Hungary has become a kind of production hub for the wider region.” One obvious question is why commercials producers keep coming back to Hungary when they are not eligible for the film and TV tax incentive.

MAFILM STUDIOS: Located 22 km from Budapest, Mafilm is a state-owned complex with a long and prestigious history of film production. Recently re-opened, it has three main stages, the largest of which is 19,000 sq ft. Movies made at Mafilm in recent years include Eragon, I Spy, Cyrano, Napoleon and Being Julia. STERN STUDIOS: Stern, located 10 km from Budapest, has been attracting foreign productions for the last decade. It has two main stages — one of 23,000 sq ft, the other of 16,000 sq ft — and has hosted productions including Eichmann, Titanic (mini-series), The Lady Vanishes, Krod Mandoon and Dracula. In addition to its stages, Stern’s facilities include offices, dressing rooms and workshops. ASTRA FILMSTUDIOS: Located 24 km from Budapest, Astra offers a decent alternative to some of the busy movie studios. It has four stages, ranging in size from 5,000 sq ft to 26,000 sq ft.

Why not go to other, cheaper countries in the region? “If you have a small campaign, then there is an argument for going somewhere cheaper like Romania,” Kisgergely says. “But there is nowhere in the region that compares to Budapest. It’s twice as big as any other city and has an incredible mix of old and contemporary architecture. There is such a range of textures and colours that it’s like a movie set. Maybe it won’t stay like this for ever, but for now there is a value to producers in every light fitting, every tile…”

FOCUS ON COMMERCIALS

49

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT THE TV producers are having a great time right now, with a growing number of countries offering financial incentives for production. It’s not so for commercials producers, although ANDY FRY found a few places that are offering help

Y

OU WON’T find commercials incentives in production hubs like the UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa or New Zealand. For the most part, the priority for commercials producers is to go in search of countries or regions where the locations are amazing and production costs are low — East Europe, Spain or Morocco, for example. But it’s clear that tax incentives could sway commercial producers in some situations. So a growing number of territories have started offering them in an attempt to get an edge over rivals. In the competitive East European market, for example, Serbia’s new 20% incentive, which launched in April 2016, covers all manner of production formats including commercials — with a minimum local spend of €100,000. Southeast Asian country Malaysia offers a 30% tax rebate that covers a wide array of productions including TV commercials. It’s a similar story with Abu Dhabi, which is using the incentive as a way to win work from its neighbouring Emirate of Dubai. Less well-known examples of countries that offer commercials incentives are Trinidad and Tobago, where the T&T Film Commission has a Production Expenditure Rebate Programme that provides rebates up to 55% for expenditures on qualifying local labour and 35% on other local expenditures. Also worth checking out is Fiji, says Nic Leggett, executive producer at Welcome Fiji. “We are a production service company operating in Fiji that predominately services high-end TVC clients,” he says. ”We have a cash rebate for TVC production of 47%. We accessed this rebate on behalf of a major Canadian Client. The rebate is

based on qualifying spend in Fiji through a Fiji bank account. Recently the Fiji Government paid out close to FJD500,000 [$275,000] for this client. Fiji is not only about tropical waters, blue skies and white sand beaches but so much more. We replicated Montreal with the help of green screen.” The issue of commercials incentives is also of interest to commercials producers based in the US. Here, the battle is between states wanting to win work from each other. New York State, for example, has been going after production work aggressively in recent years. As part of that strategy it runs The New York State Commercial Tax Credit Programme, which provides incentives to qualified production companies that are principally engaged in and control the production of qualified commercials in NYS. Credits of up to $7m a year can be allocated to encourage companies to produce commercials in NYS and help create and maintain jobs. The $7m a year consists of: shooting commercials downstate ($3m), shooting

upstate ($3m), and those demonstrating incremental “growth” in commercial production ($1m.) A credit of up to 20% of qualified production costs incurred in NYS for “growth” in commercial production above a base period may be earned. Additional credits of 5% of qualified costs may also be available. Other states with incentives applicable to commercials include Colorado ($250,000 minimum local spend, 50% of workforce needs to be Colorado residents), Hawaii ($200,000 minimum spend), Mississippi ($50,000 minimum local spend, 20% of workforce from Mississippi) and North Carolina — which set its incentive fund at $30m a year in late 2015. The NC scheme caps feature film contributions at $5m and commercials at $250,000. There are also incentives in Florida, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Texas.

SHOOTING IN

With its dreamy beaches, verdant vegetation, colourful architecture and dynamic population, it’s easy to see why the Caribbean is such a popular location for commercials producers. But the key question is not so much whether to go, but where to go. ANDY FRY reports

T

HE REGION known as the Caribbean is made up of more than 700 islands, which run from the Southern tip of the US to the Northern coast of Venezuela. These are controlled by around 30 states or dependencies. Several of these 30 offer a high standard of support to visiting producers. But there are key differentiators worth keeping in mind before you book your flights. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI), for example, make much of their close ties with the US. They are both

D7 CARIBBEAN+D.indd 50

“unincorporated territories” of the US, which means they enjoy many benefits and protections available on the mainland, including US labour, safety and minimum wage laws, US intellectual property and banking protection and US dollar currency. USVI film chief Luana Wheatley’s tagline is: “Why leave the US to film in the Caribbean? Producers who visit the USVI can find exotic locations but are able to enjoy the familiarity and security of the US.” Of all the characteristics that have made the USVI so popular for commercials and

stills shoots, it is the beaches that have attracted the most attention. Director Tom Kuntz of MJZ, who shot the iconic Lions Grand Prix-winning ‘The Man Your Man Could Smell Like’ spots for Old Spice, recently filmed the ‘Hannah And Her Horse’ series of commercials for DirecTV there, choosing a beach well known for its stills shoots. The spots feature sports illustrated model and TV personality Hannah Davis, who is a native of the USVI. “We chose Lindquist Beach because it has that quaint, remote feeling and that sort of calm, blue water that we all associate with swimsuit-model shoots. Plus it felt genuinely remote and untouched,” Kuntz says. “And on top of that, the fact that it’s close to New York City [four hours by plane] is convenient and adds to the attraction of the USVI.” The islands have been used many times for

commercials, stills shoots, reality TV, travel shows and documentaries, plus some feature films — including 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption. Other commercials shot there include T Rowe Price, Pottery Barn Kids, Nordstrom, Seagram, Izod, Alloy Apparel and Princess Cruises. As Wheatley says, there is a wide choice of locations on the islands: “Greece, Key West, Brazil, Mexico, Afghanistan, uninhabited islands and vast farmed estates, are just some of the unexpected looks available in the US Virgin Islands.” The US influence in Puerto Rico and the USVI extends to the quality of the crews, which are conversant in English and Spanish. There are also incentives in both locations. In the case of the USVI, the incentive scheme is new and applies to commercials producers. Subject to a minimum spend of $250,000, “we’re offering up to a 17% transferable tax credit and up to a 29% cash rebate. That’s 46% for producers who meet key criteria.” Wheatley adds: “We are looking forward to the incentives allowing us to work with more productions. Anyone can benefit as long as they meet the criteria. Local lawyers and our Economic Development Authority can help facilitate the application process. It’s important to point out that the incentives apply to the music industry as well.” The British Virgin Islands (BVI) have been welcoming productions for over two decades. “Through these productions we have established a set of location service providers who can co-ordinate the crews and production services you need per island and location,” says Clive McCoy, head of the BVI Film Commission. “In the event that we may be short on crew, we

D7 CARIBBEAN+D.indd 51

FOCUS ON THE CARIBBEAN

work closely with crew from the USVI, which is only 55 minutes away by ferry.” The region is film-friendly, especially when projects offer significant promotional value to the islands. And the BVI Film Commission also provides assistance with obtaining work permits so the process is easy. “We assist with obtaining special rates on accommodations and other services. The BVI also offer different forms of incentives for productions hosted on the island. It ranges from assistance with work permits, clearances, negotiating special rates on accommodations, boats, and ground transportation. It is not a one-size-fits-all model but we work closely with each production company to ensure it works within their budgets.” Commercials shot in the BVI include The Johnny Walker Blue Label ‘Gentleman’s Wager’ commercial. “Billabong also used our locations for their 2016 women’s line; Bulouva Watches and Aveda Skin Care also captured content here for their brand. The United States is our largest market,” McCoy says. Jamaica, the third largest island in the region, doesn’t boast such strong links to the US. But its unique look makes it a popular destination for producers. A key attraction is that it has the full range of Caribbean-style geography — mountains, forests, plantations, caves, cliffs and beaches. This is reinforced by Kingston, Jamaica’s vibrant capital city with its mix of colourful markets, Spanish colonial and Georgian architecture. Many commercials and feature films have shot there and the island has the region’s oldest Film Commission, which has existed since 1984, which means permitting is relatively straightforward. The

51

commission estimates that around 150 productions are shot on the island every year, ranging from features to music videos. This has created a healthy crew and equipment infrastructure. Other Caribbean locations where producers can be assured of good infrastructure include The Bahamas, part of the British Commonwealth. Although it doesn’t have a formal connection with the US, the fact that it is just a 55-minute flight from Florida and a two-and-a-half-hour flight from New York makes it an easy trip for producers. Movie projects to have visited in recent years include an episode of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise and Casino Royale, while TV and commercials producers are regular visitors to the Bahamas, which has around a dozen inhabited islands. Because the Bahamas is the ultimate in Caribbean cool, it is especially popular for fashion shoots, with Elle magazine a recent visitor. The status of the Dominican Republic (TDR) has also been enhanced in recent years by the arrival of Pinewood Studios. With around six-to-10 feature films a year being produced in TDR it’s no surprise that the country has also built up one of the best production services sectors in the region. TDR also has a 25% tax credit. Although it doesn’t extend to commercial productions, it does at least help sustain the wider production infrastructure.

Siesta in the Grenadines

As a general rule, the depth of production talent and infrastructure is better the closer you are to the US. But it’s worth noting that some of the islands at the far end of the chain from Miami are also popular, well-organised locations. Barbados, the most easterly island in the Caribbean, is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise water and coral reef

though they would of course be an option for producers and clients coming here from France.”

— which makes it popular for underwater photography. An affluent part of the Caribbean, it also boasts luxury villas, golf courses, tropical gardens, colonial architecture and plantation houses. Also at this far end of the Caribbean is the two-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The country’s economy is largely based around oil and gas exports, but it is looking to diversify into areas such as tourism and media. To this end, it has introduced an industry cash rebate of up to 50% for expenditure on qualifying local labour and 35% on other local expenditures — applicable to film, TV and commercials. Add to that a strong production base and good infrastructure (courtesy of the oil and gas business), the country is well-placed to attract new production clients. For producers in search of an unexplored gem or a unique look, kit can be flown in from Miami or one of the main production hubs in the region itself. The colourful island of Curacao, for example, has hosted productions — but talent would mostly need to be brought in. The same is true for Dominica, which has a spectacular array of locations — including the second largest boiling lake in the world. It also has a beautiful French quarter in capital Roseau and is known for underwater photography. Other locations that really need to be explored by producers include St Vincent & The Grenadines which offer lush mountain peaks, volcano, blacksand beaches, fishing villages, turquoise lagoons and coral reefs. St Kitts & Nevis offer rainforest covered volcanic peaks, sugarcane plantations and forts, and white sand beaches

D7 CARIBBEAN+D.indd 53

perfect for underwater photography. St Lucia’s highlights include its two spectacular mountainous volcanic plugs known as Pitons. The most obvious way to get the best out of the region is to talk to the experts. Louise Sandiford of Caribbean Crews came to the Caribbean around 25 years ago. “We’ve serviced productions across a lot of islands in the Lesser Antilles [the Southern stretch of the Caribbean] and they all have very different looks. So when a producer sends us a storyboard we can usually tell pretty quickly which island is best depending on whether they want beaches, coral, forests, hills, waterfalls, a specific kind of architecture — or a combination of the above.” She has also built up a network of location scouts/production services partners across some of the key islands in the Lesser Antilles. “So if a request comes in we can get people to take pictures and offer clients options. We’re very collaborative.” Key business sectors that visit the region include fashion, holidays and airlines, Sandiford says. And in her experience, most of them go home happy: “The usual approach would be to bring all the key equipment in from Miami, rather than source it piecemeal across the region — so that provides a level of comfort. And the hotels are excellent and the people friendly. So it’s a great experience.” One of the most captivating things about the region is the colonial impact: “The islands were fought over by European nations for centuries,” Sandiford says, “and that has left its mark in terms of the look, the culture, the cuisine and the language. This makes the region very exciting for producers. We tend not to shoot in the French-speaking islands,

Cuba has been opening up rapidly in recent times. A big part of the country’s appeal is capital city Havana’s run down colonial looks, which combine evocatively with Americana throwbacks. However the Cuba Film Commission says there’s a lot more to attract producers including the country’s nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 200 beaches and coffee, cocoa, sugarcane and tobacco plantations. Although the country has yet to introduce a film industry tax incentive, a combination of low production costs and bottled up demand has seen Michael Bay’s new Transformers movie and Fast & Furious 8 both include Cuba in their production schedule. The first US film to shoot in Cuba following a thawing of relationships between the two countries was Bob Yari’s Papa: Hemingway In Cuba, which visited in 2014. One of the more surprising stories of the Caribbean is how good it is at doubling for other parts of the world. Perhaps this point gets overlooked because the region is so beautiful in its own right, but numerous states and dependencies seize on this point as an asset. Cuba’s Film Commission promotes Havana’s Chinatown and a Russian Orthodox Cathedral; and Viñales with its lush green tobacco fields, limestone cliffs and caves, which “looks like it could be north Thailand”. Cuba isn’t the only place to claim a similarity to Asia. Jamaicans say that their Rio Grande meanders like the Mekong Delta, which means it can be used to double as Southeast Asia. Trinidad and Tobago can double for Vietnam and India. Puerto Rico has a particularly good track record, having featured as Kuwait, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, Miami, Cuba and Spain among others. The US Virgin Islands’ farms, forests, hills and European-style towns have doubled for Greece, Mexico and Afghanistan. The area is great for “generic” doubling, too, says Sandiford. “Our jobs don’t usually ask for the Caribbean to be some other specific part of the world. But it’s great for clients whose jobs require an unidentified white sand and blue-water backdrop.” It’s worth checking out the timing of the hurricane season in the region before planning a shoot. And at the time of writing the other issue to be conscious of is the spread of Zika, which has reached the region. Female producers and talent should seek travel guidance before setting out.
