Red Cross program provides free smoke alarms Since the American Red Cross launched its home fire campaign in 2014 the program has installed more than 1,070,944 smoke alarms in 445,214 households and saved 303 lives. A critical part of the campaign is Sound the Alarm, a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Red Cross volunteers, along with fire departments and other partners install free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms, and providing fire prevention and safety education. Fire alarms are provided and installed free of charge. Volunteers also will help households prepare escape plans, organize evacuation points and create defensible space around the residence. To request smoke alarm installation in your home, contact Mat-Su Red Cross Director Bill Morrow (907) 357-6060, or bill.morrow@redcross.org.
