SILOY MUSIC AWARDS IN MAY
Since 2017, the Cebu Siloy Music Awards has recognized some of the biggest names in the Bisaya music industry including Karencitta, juan karlos, Wonggoys, Oh! Caraga, Jacky Chang, Jewel Villaflores, Ferdinand Aragon, Jerika Teodorico, Insoy Ninal, Iping Amores, Juan Paasa, Franco and SE24. The past winners of the Song of the Year include “Ha ha ha Hasula”, “Cebuana”, “Buwan”, “Ipanumpa Ko” and “Kahayag”.
For 2023, the Breakthrough Artist category has as nominees: Mary Anchit, Kent Charcos, John Erscel, Kurt Fick, Joseph Gara, mrld, Relden, and The Sundown.
There were plenty of new releases in 2022 as the threat of Covid waned. Only eight were selected to compete in the Song of the Year category: “Bayhana”, “Di Na”, “Mopadayon”, “Undangon Ta Ni”, Cebu Pop winner “Do Re Migo Ra Mi” and three Vispop X finalists namely “Hawid”, “Isayaw Tika” and “Para Natong Duha”. The award will go to the composers, rather than the artist recording the song.
Named as the Siloy Bahanding Awit in 2023 is “Magellan”, the classic novelty song written and recorded by Yoyoy Villame. Recognized for championing Bisaya music through his novelty songs as well as traditional materials, Max Surban is this year’s recipient of the Siloy Bantugan Award. The winners of the different categories will be announced in the last week of May, while B ORIG Global Radio Show will air the songs of the nominees during the entire month of May.

Continuing Challenge
Early this year, Vispop X was not only successfully staged in Cebu City, it also enabled the artists to have their songs aired in some radio stations that partnered with the organizers. It is laudable that institutions such as Ayala Cebu and the Cebu City Government provided logistical support, while most print media gave coverage. The airing of the event in Facebook Live gave the event worldwide exposure.
Are Bisaya artists ready to conquer the world? While that is in the agenda of most movers in the industry, it will take more than determination to achieve such a dream. Already we have seen Cebu-based acts drawing huge crowds in their provincial gigs in the Visayas and Mindanao. Their songs are popular thanks to the various streaming platforms. However, there is Luzon which remains to be unconquered due to the language barrier and indifference.
It is therefore courageous of Bisaya artists like Morisette Amon, K Z Tandingan, T J Monterde and Junior Kilat who have fans throughout the country in recording Bisaya Origs (or B Origs) as major releases. They are not afraid of their Bisaya heritage being known, the way that pioneering artists like Pilita, Dulce and Max Surban have done.
Established Bisaya alternative music bands such as Urbandub, Franco, Shiela & The Insects as well as new acts like The Sundown and Sansette have played it safe by sticking to recording original materials in English, so as not to alienate themselves from the Luzon audience. If only they ventured into adding a few B Origs to their repertoire – that should help in the acceptance of the Bisaya language as an alternative to English or Tagalog in rock anthems.
However, if Luzon refuses to embrace B Origs, that should not matter. We can just skip them and promote B Origs straight to the world with all the platforms allowing universal listenership. But beyond popularising the songs, the professionalising of music acts is a must. The latter is the key to the success of K-Pop that has dominated world music charts and even penetrating what seemed to be the impenetrable American music scene.
Inaki Rodis (Oh! Caraga and Jewel Villaflores) and Cattski Espina (Wonggoys, Jericho Streegan and Julia Q) must be commended for taking the steps towards professionalising the local music industry. But it is not easy. It remains a challenge, with cowboys and scalawags operating in the midst.
B ORIG Global Radio Show, for its part, will do its share in championing the cause of Bisaya artists through airplay and written opinions.
But more is required. Such as entrepreneurs, businessmen and investors putting their money in the local music industry because if they don’t, Luzon-based music powerplayers may just eat up the seeds planted by the local stakeholders. (Mel B. Libre)

Kalikupan Jam included in Earth Day Global Event

The April 18 edition of the programme was included in the celebration of Earth Day that falls on April 22 as coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
The special episode consists of 100% pro-environment songs including: Joey Ayala’s “Agila”, Asin’s “Masdan Ang Kapaligiran”, Missing Filemon’s “Awit sa Tanon”, Rolly Wagas’ “Kahakug” and Kayth Alex’s “Siloy”.
Also in the playlist are: Teban ug Goliat’s “Kinabuhing Pilipino”, Willfreedo’s “Laya Kalikasan”, Kuntaw Mindanao’s “Kinaiyahan Kinabuhi”, Kadangyan’s “Kalikasan”, Mel Libre’s “Raindance”, Jewel Villaflores’ “Bulalakaw” and Manny Lapingcao’s “Basura”.
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first held on April 22, 1970. This year’s theme is “Investing in the Environment”. Kathleen Rogers in explaining the theme, said: “Businesses, governments, and civil society are equally responsible for taking action against the climate crisis and lighting the spark to accelerate change towards a green, prosperous, and equitable future. We must join together in our fight for the green revolution, and for the health of future generations…Investing in a green economy is the only path to a healthy, prosperous, and equitable future. Human influence is unequivocally to blame for the warming of the planet and the sad truth is some forms of climate disruption will be felt for centuries to come. However, we must collectively push away from the dirty fossil fuel economy and old technologies of centuries past – and redirect attention to creating a 21st century economy that restores the health of our planet, protects our species, and provides opportunities for all.
In the month-long observance, the radio hosts talked about their environmental heroes and of specific ways to protect the environment.

Titik BASURA MO
Composed and performed by MANNY LAPINGCAO
Pagkahugaw na sa palibot
Bisag asa lingi gubot
Nagkatag ang sagbot
Sa kanal ta naghuot gayud
Botelya, mga lata ug plastic nga putos
Guba ninyong lamisa ug sud-an nga pan-os
Hoy ayaw’g pataka ug labay sa basura mo
Labi na gyud kon ting-uwan
Manggawas gayud kining tanan
Nalumos ang sapa
Sa baho sa inyong hinabwa, ay baya.
Buslot nga balde ug purol nga gisi
Tanang hugaw sa balay gipaanud ug dali
Hoy ayaw’g pataka ug labay sa basura mo
Palihug intawon pagkat-on na sa paghunahuna
Sa paglabay sa basura
Ayaw gayud intawon pagpataka
Wooh.. Basura mo…basura mo…
Basura mo, basura mo
Bisan sa hangin di ka gyud kaeskapo
Kay matag haggap mo baho na’g aso
Hoy maunay ka baya higala
Sa basura mo
Tan-awa ang atong kadagatan
Mga isda ta nagkanihit man
Kay nahilo sa basura
Sa tanang hugaw natuk-an wooh…
Sa baybayon ta mga basura midagsa
Mayraba’g masud-an ta kini sama’g isda
Hoy ay lagi’g pataka ug labay
Sa basura mo
Basura mo, basura mo
