ALLEGHENY LAND TRUST ALT is a nationally-accredited, 501c3 land conservation non-profit dedicated to helping local people save local land. Since 1993, ALT has protected more than 2,600 acres of green space in 30 municipalities to preserve our region’s unique natural beauty, expand outdoor recreation opportunities, protect and improve water and air quality, sustain biodiversity, and enhance the quality of life for all in our region today and for generations to come.

This 155-acre pocket of uniquely-serene green space on the city’s limits presents an urgent, exciting opportunity. The reasons to protect this land are many; among them: • preserve the region’s scenic beauty • provide close-to-home green space access to the thousands within walking distance, and more who are able to utilize public transit or bicycle transport • create opportunity for outdoor recreation on the miles of informal, community-maintained trails • absorb rainwater to mitigate Girty’s Run flooding • maintain and improve local air quality

These woods are our best kept secret. Permanently protecting them would make them an incredible resource for current residents of both Millvale and Reserve, and for future generations.”

Brian Wolovich Triboro Ecodistrict Director, Millvale Resident, Community Organizer

GIRTY’S WOODS CONSERVATION PROJECT A tremendous opportunity to protect a rare forest in an urban center for current residents and future generations.

These woodlands slope from the peaceful, residential streets of Reserve Township down to the densely-populated downtown of Millvale Borough. Much of these 155 acres have been explored and cared for by neighbors for years. A network of informal trails winds through the green space passing scenic overlooks, open fields, wetland areas, and a biodiverse forest. Together, we have the opportunity to protect these woodlands forever to create passive recreation opportunities, absorb heavy rainwater that would otherwise overwhelm Girty’s Run watershed, and preserve wildlife habitat for a variety of native flora and fauna already calling it home. In addition to the residents of Reserve, Millvale, and Shaler, this green space is also accessible by the Three Rivers Heritage Trail system and by a Port Authority bus route. ALT is working with the local community, the municipalities of Reserve and Millvale Reserve, and various other local, state, private, and public supporters to make this project a reality. We hope you’ll join the effort to permanently protect this “best kept secret” by making a donation today.
