Mayor’s Message

We are delighted to extend our warmest greetings to each of you as we approach a momentous occasion in our city’s history - the Lindon City Centennial Celebration! This milestone marks not only a hundred years of vibrant community life but also a testament to the resilience and spirit of our citizens. Our roots began in 1861 when a few of the families from the Pleasant Grove Fort moved out onto the land south, settling along a wagon route which had once been an Indian trail that is today State Street. At first these settlers lived in dirt dugouts, but later built homes out of logs hauled from the mountains or made from adobe bricks. This string of homes became known as “Stringtown”. As more settlers came, they took up large tracts of land to the east and west and settled on them with big herds of sheep and farms.

Life was rough and full of much hard work, but they still found time to have fun. Dances and parties were held in their homes or at the lakeshore. They produced plays, honored the “old folks” once a year and the children played all sorts of games and sometimes did naughty pranks when the chores were done. When someone was ill, neighbors came together to bring in the harvest. They laughed together, worked together, and shared each other’s dreams and sorrows.

Water was one of the first necessities of life here for livestock and growing food. Wherever a small stream could be found, people used it for drinking and washing clothes. Sometimes they had to haul water from 3-4 miles away. Not a big creek, Curly springs was the main source for the pioneers, (right above Canberra) but they needed to come together to do the back-breaking work with picks, shovels and horses to dig canals and ditches to bring water closer to their homes. So, in 1865 the settlers of Stringtown formed an Irrigation Board. There are stories about the fistfights over water all the way up Provo Canyon to establish Lindon’s right to water down the canal, but this was a serious matter of life and death for them.

As the century turned, eventually the few scattered families of Stringtown had grown to 455 people and they decided a meeting would be held in the church house to discuss whether it was time to build a water system for the health and welfare of the people. A bond election was held to vote for the issuance of $45,000 worth of waterworks bonds for the purpose of acquiring and building a sufficient water supply. 59 total votes were cast – 52 for and 7 against. The bonds couldn’t be issued unless an official local government entity existed, so a petition was sent to the county asking permission and an official name for the community had to be put forward.

In the early years of Stringtown, mail for the settlers was delivered by stagecoach or pony express and dropped off in a mail bag hanging by a nail on an old Linden tree near the present-day Los Hermanos restaurant. In 1889 an application to obtain the town’s first post office was sent to Washington D.C. and a name was needed for it. Because the old Linden tree was a landmark, they decided to use “LINDEN”. But when the official paperwork came back, someone back in Washington had misspelled the postal station name to “LINDON”. Well, that misspelled name must have gained some endearment, because the town voted that was the name and spelling to use in the application to the county to incorporate as a city. Official incorporation was granted on March 24, 1924 with Lindon consisting of 82 families and a total of 458 souls.

City Council

Today we proudly number just under 13,000 residents and boast every kind of business and industry, enjoy beautiful parks and trails with top-notch big-city amenities and services, yet we still treasure our motto of “A Little bit of Country” encouraging animal rights and small pastures or farms amid our urban growth - and most importantly our neighborly small-town feel.

The historic Lindon Book OUR TOWN asks; “Will we follow the many sterling examples of sacrifice, dedication, and cooperation that the early settlers exhibited in leaving for us such gifts as excellent water supplies, roads, schools, and churches? Will we continue to work together so that we can pass this heritage on to others?” Today we answer with a resounding “YES!!” Our Centennial Celebration provides us with a unique opportunity to reflect on our shared heritage, celebrate our achievements, and look forward to a future filled with promise. It is a time to honor those who have contributed to Lindon’s success and to recognize the values of hard work, family and service that bind us together as a community. I encourage all residents, young and old, to join in the festivities and make this year-long centennial celebration a true reflection of Lindon’s spirit and unity.

Thank you for being a part of Lindon’s rich history and bright future.

The Lindon Amusement Hall. The picture was taken in 1906 on Old Folks’ Day.

“The Amusement Hall was used for all kinds of entertainment by ward and community. One of the most notable events was the Old Folks’ Day and ward reunion. This was held annually, usually on February 22. Those individuals over age sixty-five were honored guests. They were given VIP transportation to the hall in buggies or bob-sleighs, and in later years by automobiles.” - Lindon, Our Town (1983)

William Harris received a Centennial Medallion at his 100th birthday party in April at Spring Gardens. The Orem Chapter of the American Legion also honored him for his service as a soldier. Bill was born right here in Lindon in 1924. The little house he was raised in still stands today! See below.

Centennial Grand Marshals

As a part of our Centennial celebrations, we are pleased to announce that the 2024 Grand Marshals are all of the living past Mayors of Lindon City and their spouse.

Scott & Brenda Cullimore

Scott Cullimore has lived in Lindon most of his life. When he was born, there were two wards in Lindon; the 1st ward was above the highway and the 2nd ward was below the highway. He is still a member of the 2nd ward.

His ancestors were among the first settlers of Lindon and at the time Lindon was called Stringtown. Brenda Cullimore comes from Oasis, Utah where she grew up on her family’s farm. They met at BYU at a Valentine‘s Day dance and have been together ever since. They have three children, Tiffany (Darren Walker), Cindy (David Mishler), and Jordan Cullimore (Natasha). They have fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, with one on the way.

Brenda is proud to have served as a mother to her wonderful children, but also taught school at Sego Lilly in Lehi for twenty years. Scott has served as a Justice Court Judge for the past twenty-eight years and is currently a Senior Judge working part time. Brenda and Scott served together for many years on the Historic Committee and loved to help with many historical projects. Scott served two terms on the Lindon City Council and one term as Mayor. They love the open spaces concept of Lindon and hope that we can always have that little bit of country feeling.

Larry & Linda Ellertson

Larry and Linda met at what is now Southern Utah University while attending school. Following school, they moved to Arizona where Larry worked as a CPA for Haskins and Sells, one of the Big 8 Accounting firms, while Linda taught elementary school. When their family started, Linda became a full-time mother.

They moved back to Utah in 1977 where Larry worked for Utah Power and Light. They are the parents of 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren with another one expected in July. Larry had the opportunity to serve as mayor of Lindon for just over 8 years and as a Utah County Commissioner for 12 years. When the children were older, Linda returned to work as a school teacher. Linda has now retired and Larry is semi-retired while continuing to do some work as an advisor to Congressman John Curtis.

Linda now enjoys her quilting and book club activities and Larry continues to enjoy working outdoors and tending to his horses. In addition, they are members of the Lone Peak 4Wheel Jeep Club and enjoy off-road adventures throughout Utah and some surrounding states. They have and do enjoy living in Lindon with the many good neighbors and friends they have and look forward to the future of our great community.

Jim & Pam Dain

Pam grew up in Sanpete County and later moved to Orem where her family started Corbet Trailer Sales. Jim Grew up in Provo on the Edgemont bench and attended Orem schools. Jim and Pam were Junior High School sweethearts. They met each other when Pam was in the seventh grade, and Jim was in the eighth grade. They dated all through high school and were married on July 21, 1972, 52 years ago.

Jim and Pam always had a dream of finding and fixing up an old home. In 1975 they found that place in Lindon, Utah and started working on it. In 1976, they moved to their home and the work has never stopped. Lindon is their forever home. They raised 5 children, Ryan, Hayden, Zachary, Bridger, and Mckenzie in the foothills of Mount Timpanogos in this beautiful city of Lindon.

Lindon opened its heart and soul to their family and they have worked hard at giving back that love. Jim served in various positions of Lindon City government. Three 4-year terms on City Council and two terms as Lindon Mayor. Jim also served on the Lindon Board of Adjustments and the Lindon Historic Preservation Commission.

Pam and Jim are now retired after long careers at Alpine School District for Pam, and Brigham Young University for Jim. They love this city and the people in it. Their prize possession is a key to the city that they proudly display on the front door of their little fixer upper on the corner of 400 East and 400 North. Jim and Pam want to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as part of the Grand Marshal team as we celebrate 100 years of the finest city in America.

Jeff & Karen Acerson

Jeff is from Green River, Utah and Karen is from Moab. They built and moved into their home in Lindon in 1992 and have loved living next to the most wonderful people on earth ever since.

After hearing from his church leaders that members should be more involved in their community, Jeff decided to run for a city council seat and served for a couple of terms. Jeff was then appointed as Mayor. A few years into his service as Mayor, Jeff received a mission call to serve as the mission president of the Italy, Rome Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon their return, Jeff was elected to the city council and then again as Mayor for two more terms. In 2020, during his final year as mayor, Jeff was appointed by the governor to serve a four-year term as a trustee for the Utah Transit Authority (UTA).

Karen worked as the director of customer support for WordPerfect Corporation. She helped to organize the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and served as it’s executive director and president for much of that time. Karen has served on the Utah Valley University Board of Trustees, the Mountainland Technical College Board of Trustees, and currently serves as a board member at Brades’ Place, a nonprofit organization.

Jeff and Karen are grateful for their time here in Lindon and for the many wonderful programs and people who have helped them raise their six children (Mark, Kimberly, Lisa, Scott, Marianne, and Stephanie). They currently have eight grandchildren with at least one more on the way. They also have several unofficially-adopted children and grandchildren that have been welcomed into their home over the years.

Youth Council

We have begun our third year of Lindon Youth Council. It has been an amazing experience for a number of our Lindon youth. They have done a wonderful job representing the exceptional young people that live in our community.

The Lindon City Youth Council is an organization that is dedicated to providing leadership training and service opportunities for interested Lindon youth in grades 9-12. Youth Council offers Lindon area teens opportunities to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for their community, its citizens, and elected officials through service and interaction.

The Youth Council helps the elected officials understand the needs of children and youth in the community and works with groups throughout the city to provide service and leadership opportunities.

Abigail Robertson is the daughter of James and Jenny Robertson. She is 11 years old and will be attending Oak Canyon Junior High in the fall. Abby is in the dual-immersion program for Portuguese and would love to visit Brazil one day. Her favorite things to do are reading, arts & crafts, dancing, playing tennis, and skiing. This year Abigail raised funds, purchased supplies and assembled 215 activity kits for Primary Children’s Hospital. She thought kids would enjoy doing something while going through a hard time. She feels blessed to be a part of Little Miss Lindon this centennial year and loves serving at the events. She has a lot of pride in her hometown and has enjoyed working on the parade float that pays tribute to our town. She looks forward to Lindon Days with all the fun events and likes how it brings the community together.

Alexandra Tremblay is the daughter of Bruno and Kimberly Tremblay. She is 13 years old and attends Oak Canyon Jr High School. Alexandra is always singing. Her hobbies include art, writing poetry, dance, drama, baking, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family. Alexandra loves to serve and help others. She started a Service Club at Oak Canyon and she was even given a Youth Service Award from Mayor Lundberg for her service at the Lindon Senior Center last year. For her Little Miss Lindon Service Project this year she made snack kits for local refugees. Alexandra has a big heart and doesn’t like to see people suffer. She chose this project because she wanted to make a difference in helping people who have been displaced from their homes, which she felt would be a particularly hard challenge. Alexandra loves Lindon City! She is so happy to be able to do more to serve our community as royalty, and feels it is a privilege, especially with it being the Centennial.

Amelia Ferrin is 12 years old and is the daughter of Thomas and Laura Ferrin. She is the oldest of three kids and will be attending Oak Canyon Junior High in the fall. Amelia loves to crochet, play violin, bake, play with animals, and play sports. Amelia’s service project was working with her family to knit 181 hats for the babies in the NICU at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. Amelia is looking forward to the Free Swim Day during Lindon Days, when she will get to help with the KenDucky Derby and the Cardboard Boat Regatta. She loves being involved in making Lindon City events happen and getting to see what happens “behind the scenes.”

Izzy Slade is the daughter of Ryan & Bryndee Slade. Izzy is 12 years old and is sad to be leaving Lindon Elementary and all of the teachers she has loved so much. Izzy has music in her soul. She can be heard singing non-stop around the house. She loves theater and dance. She enjoyed playing Baloo in the Jungle Book and Veruca Salt in Willy Wonka this last year. She’s very artistic and loves to create. For Izzy’s service project, she organized a musical talent showcase with friends to perform for the residents of Spring Gardens Care Center. Izzy sang a solo, and had friends and family play their respective instruments. She really enjoyed talking with the elderly people there. Izzy is thrilled to serve the city of Lindon this year! She looks forward to every opportunity to engage with the community and is always asking her mom when the next event will be.

Whitney Pace is the daughter of Gene and Neisha Pace. She is 13 and will be starting eighth grade in the fall. Whitney loves to perform, read, and swim. Her favorite subject in school is band and she enjoys getting to improve her skills on her trumpet. Whitney went to Spring Gardens Assisted Living and played games and planned activities for the residents for her service project. She has continued her service monthly for the last year and a half. Whitney is looking forward to Lindon Days, especially the Boat Regatta race and the KenDucky Derby. Whitney has loved serving in the royalty and is excited to continue to bring others joy in the coming months.

Jr Rodeo Royalty

Queen Jane Tanner has always been referred to as a “social butterfly” by her family and friends due to her outgoing, energetic, and sweet personality. She is a 15-year-old from Highland city and when she’s not with her heart horse Gypsy she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, singing, reading, trying new things especially different sports, and participating in her schools chamber choir. She has been riding her entire life and began her riding journey in the english world achieving a D3 level in the United States Pony Club, but ultimately found a passion for the western world. She was the 1st attendant for the Highland City Jr. Rodeo Royalty in 2023 and is excited to continue her rodeo queening journey for many years to come and bring her ”little bit of country” to Lindon.

1st Attendant Carlie Nielson is the 3rd child of Carl and Laurie Nielson. Carlie is 16 years old, lives in Lindon and is currently a sophomore attending Pleasant Grove High school. She is very responsible and involved in many different activities while being on High Honor Roll at school. She enjoys playing club soccer for Utah Valley United year round. She also loves horses and has been training a young filly mustang for the past two years. She has gained experience and knowledge while training. Going into the arena with a plan in mind doesn’t always pan out and you have to adjust your lesson plan because every day is different and you need to find the little wins with each step. She feels the lessons she learns while training her horses also apply to her daily life. You have to be comfortable with change and be willing to modify your plans.

2nd Attendant Jaina Johnson is a 13-year-old from Lehi, Utah. She has many hobbies, one of them being all kinds of art from painting and drawing to even crochet. She got the amazing opportunity to represent Highland City as their 2023 Jr rodeo Queen. She’s now so grateful and excited to get the chance to be on the 2024 Lindon Rodeo Royalty. Aside from rodeo queening she has a big passion for barrel racing, and hopes to compete for Miss Teen Rodeo USA. Jaina also hopes to someday pursue a career in movie directing. Jaina and her lovable palomino quarter horse Apollo enjoy competing in Utah county 4H shows every summer. Jaina believes that anyone can reach their dreams in life, and hopes to spread that message as a rodeo queen.

Lindon Fair History

“The Lindon Fair was started in the early days of Lindon. It is one activity which has endured the test of time. It was first started by the boys displaying their choice calves they had raised in 4-H club. Other items were displayed, and it gradually developed into a small fair. The fair was discontinued for many years, and then in March 1940, a committee was organized, and a fair was held in the late summer.

The fair was then held at the old church grounds at 400 N and Main Street. It consisted mainly of displays and a horse pulling contest. A big tent was set up to house the exhibits of fruit and vegetables, bottled goods, handiwork, and other arts and crafts. Winners of the exhibit items were awarded a sack of flour or a sack of sugar.

No fair was held in 1942 because of the war. In 1943, the fair was begun again. The fair then consisted of an animal show, pony races, and games.

The Lindon Community Fair of today has been called the “Biggest Little Fair in Utah.” It is held at the Lindon Park each August and everyone in the community is encouraged to participate. There are exhibits of fruits, vegetables, flowers, home baked goods, pickles, jam, and handiwork. There is always an interesting arts and crafts display.

The day begins with a traditional early-morning flag ceremony, followed by a breakfast which is cooked and served by the Lindon Lion’s Club. Throughout the remainder of the day, the fair features a wide variety of activities and attractions, including a parade, a pet show, games, horse riding events, and a youth show.

The day concludes with an outstanding youth show geared towards youth of all ages. For those who have horses, there are various novelty races. There is also a calf riding. Among the favorite events for children are the animal chases. Rabbits, chickens, ducks, and other small animals are turned loose in the arena. The boys and girls enthusiastically pursue the animals of their choice--and they put their hearts into the chase for a good reason. They get to keep the animals...if they can catch it.

An outstanding feature of the annual Lindon Fair during the 1960s, was the children’s parade with its beautiful children, miniature floats, decorated bicycles, tricycles, etc. Several days prior to the parade time, there was much ado and preparation put into the children’s royalty contest.

Lindon boys and girls were encouraged to contend for one of four positions: King, Queen, Sir Lindon, or Lady Lindon. All unsuccessful candidates were dubbed princes and princesses, so that every child was a winner. The Pleasant Grove Review always featured the parade royalty contestant with an interesting story write-up and special pictures.” - Lindon, Our Town (1983)

Tours of the historic home are available starting at 7:00 PM or throughout the year by contacting the Lindon City Community Development department at (801) 785-7687.

At one time, the house was slated for demolition. The bulldozers were on the site when Pam Dain, a Lindon resident with an interest in historic architecture and antiques, was driving her school bus and saw the demolition crew. She pulled the bus between the house and bulldozers and asked the operators to wait until she could make a few phone calls. Pam single-handedly saved one of Lindon’s few remaining examples of architecture of the earliest period of our history.

The home was eventually moved to the pioneer home that sits at Pioneer Park.”Lindon, Our Town (1983)

However, it often attracted almost as many adults as youngsters. The parents would show up as spectators or to participate in the competition and have fun.

Qualifications to enter the competition included a Huck Finn-style costume, fishing gear, and p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e.

Prizes were always awarded for best boy Huck Finn costume, best girl Huck Finn costume, first fish caught, first to catch the limit of six fish, the biggest fish, the littlest person to catch a fish.” - Lindon, Our Town (1983)

Lindon Rodeo History

“Along with the normal events such as mutton bustin’, calf-riding, stick horse races, etc., the town would put on a horse-pulling contest. The contest took place on the dirt road adjoining the property of the old church grounds at 400 N and Main Street. The objective of the contest was to determine which team of horses could pull the most weight. A stone boat (similar to a wagon box on runners) was brought to the starting line. Weights, such as sacks of sand, were used to prove which team could pull the most weight the greatest distance. To have the best team in town was a great honor. In later years, since the tractor has replaced the horses, a few draft horses remain in Lindon. As a result, the horse pulling contests have been discontinued. But the memories of them still invoke many a story beginning with, ‘Remember the time when...’” - Lindon, Our Town (1983)
