Performing Arts

As we gather together for our Performing Arts program, the staff and students of Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our school is situated.
We honour the Minjungbal people of the Bundjalung Nation and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise their enduring connection to
Country, culture, and community, and we extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who visit our school.
May this be a space of learning, connection, and mutual respect as we walk together in the spirit of reconciliation.
At its heart, education is about more than knowledge - it’s about nurturing the whole person. The Performing Arts hold a central place in this, offering our students not just a platform to express themselves, but a space to discover who they are and how they see the world.
To create truly meaningful opportunities for creative growth, we surround our young people with passionate, deeply experienced professionals - artists who have honed their craft over years of dedication. It’s a privilege to have so many outstanding performers, composers, directors, and educators on our staff - people who are not only experts in their field, but who actively inspire the next generation by sharing their talent, knowledge, and mentorship every day.
At Lindisfarne, the arts are not an add-on. They are woven into the fabric of our culture. Our commitment to artistic excellence is reflected in the strength of our HSC results, where Performing Arts continues to be among our highestranking and most celebrated areas of achievement. But beyond the accolades and numbers, what we value most is the growth we witness in our students - the courage they develop, the collaboration they embrace, the discipline they practise, and the joy they share.
When young people are encouraged to create, perform, and engage with the arts, they develop empathy, resilience, and confidence - qualities that stay with them well beyond the stage or rehearsal room. They also learn to value beauty, truth, and the power of expression in a world that needs these things more than ever.
I want to thank our Performing Arts team for their tireless work in building this environment - an environment where creativity is cultivated and students are genuinely seen, heard, and supported. Their influence reaches well beyond the classroom - in every performance, every rehearsal, and in the quiet confidence students build as they learn to express themselves.
Charlotte Lush Deputy Principal Executive for the Arts/Germinate Records
One of the great strengths of our Performing Arts program is the depth and continuity of learning we can offer from the earliest years of schooling right through to Year 12. As a Preschool to Year 12 faculty, our curriculum team brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and care to every stage of a student’s creative journey.
From the foundational years, students are guided by specialist teachers who deliver the mandated Music curriculum through to Year 8. Alongside this, our students also engage in Dance and Drama as part of a rich and varied Performing Arts education. These early experiences lay the groundwork for confidence, creativity, and a genuine love for the Arts.
As students move into elective subjects in the Senior School, they are taught by educators who are not only experts in their discipline but who are also deeply committed to helping students grow artistically and personally. Whether in Music, Dance, or Drama, our staff bring deep expertise and a shared understanding of the role the Arts play in a balanced and thoughtful education.
A unique feature of our approach is the collaboration between classroom teachers and our team of Performing Arts tutors. Together, they integrate curriculum outcomes with individual tuition, ensuring students experience
a personalised and connected learning experiencewhether through instrumental studies, ensemble work, or performance preparation.
The Performing Arts calendar is full and varied, offering students many chances to be involved throughout the year. From informal lunchtime concerts to large-scale productions, there are regular opportunities for students to perform, collaborate, and share their work. These experiences are designed to support students at every stage - whether they are stepping onto the stage for the first time or preparing a major performance piece.
Our events are supported by staff with strong technical and production experience in areas such as lighting, sound, and stage management. This behind-the-scenes expertise helps ensure that each performance is well-organised and professionally presented, allowing students to focus on their creative work in a safe and supportive environment.
We are also proud to maintain strong partnerships within our wider community, with students regularly invited to provide music and performances at community events. These opportunities allow students to give back through their talents, gain performance experience beyond the school context, and see the role the Arts can play in bringing people together.

While many schools around the world have great music programs and great facilities - including recording studios - there are very few, if any, with their own record label. Rarer still is a school-based record label built on the core foundation of service to others.
Germinate Records provides a unique opportunity for young musicians, producers and music professionals to develop their artistic voice and hone their craft while giving back to the local and wider community. We are in the fortunate position to be able to focus wholeheartedly on artistic excellence and service without the pressures associated with a commercial record label. The result is high-quality new music made by young people who are using their gifts for the good of others.
Since launching in 2019, we have worked with many talented young people on a wide range of service-based projects. These have included; the release of new music in support of cancer research, dementia research and people in need; collaborations with multi-arts public art installations that give a voice to Aboriginal Australians and live music events in support of local services and facilities including palliative care facilities, local arts based businesses and mental health initiatives like R U OK?.
Alongside this, we have seen tremendous growth in young people who are at the very beginning of their music careers. We have watched nervous first-time performers develop into confident, well-rounded entertainers and tentative songwriters and producers evolve into fully formed creative artists with clear pathways into the music industry. The most rewarding aspect is seeing these young
people enter the music industry with a well-honed sense of compassion and community.
It is a great privilege to work with our young artists and we are very proud to continue to nurture the talent of tomorrow while giving back to those who need it today.

As Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School’s Strings Program continues its remarkable growth, we are excited to announce the next step in our school’s musical journey: the formation of the Lindisfarne Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in 2025. This flagship ensemble will represent the pinnacle of our Performing Arts Instrumental Music program, bringing together the most advanced student musicians from across the Senior School to perform a diverse and exciting repertoire under the direction of Mr Dean Kennedy.
Designed to emulate a professional musical environment, the Lindisfarne Symphony Orchestra will unite string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments, allowing students to experience the rich and full-bodied sound that only a complete orchestral ensemble can achieve. Through this ensemble, students will explore a wide range of musical styles from classical symphonic works to cinematic scores and contemporary arrangements, while developing deep ensemble skills, artistic expression and performance confidence. The orchestra will also serve as the dedicated pit ensemble for future school musicals, further enriching our students’ music experiences.
The formation of this ensemble has been carefully mapped over several years, supported by significant investment in the school’s instrumental music pathways from the earliest stages of learning. The Junior School Strings Immersion Program, now in its third year, has seen over 70 percent of Year 2 students voluntarily participate, with a 90 percent retention rate into Year 3 and beyond. This has led to the sustained development of young string players, further cultivated through our extensive ensemble offerings ranging from beginner groups to advanced ensembles such as Capriccio Strings and our specialist chamber ensembles.
Equally vital to this vision is the school’s Year 4 and Year 5 Band Program, which provides students with a handson introduction to woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. These students are essential to the orchestra’s future, as they will form the core of the Symphony Orchestra’s wind and brass sections in their senior schooling years. Their inclusion not only broadens musical understanding but also creates a unique collaborative environment where the warmth of strings blends with the vibrancy of winds, brass and percussion. For many, this will be their first experience performing in a full symphony orchestra, an invaluable and transformative opportunity.
With the continued support of our school community, the Lindisfarne Symphony Orchestra will build on the strong foundations of our Strings and Band Programs, offering students an inspiring extension of their musical journey and reinforcing Lindisfarne’s position as a leader in music education on the Far North Coast.

The Strings Program at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School continues to flourish, with a record 110 students participating in the Junior School Strings Immersion Program in 2025. This voluntary program allows students to elect to take part, demonstrating an increasing demand for high-quality string instrumental education at Lindisfarne across violin, viola, cello and double bass. Additionally, 45 students are actively engaged in our ensemble programs, which includes Capriccio Strings, Vivace Strings, Cantabile Strings, Poco Strings, and specialist chamber ensembles such as our String Quartet and String Trio.
The Junior School Strings Immersion Program remains a core feature of the school’s Performing Arts curriculum. In 2025, 50 Year 2 students have voluntarily joined the program, representing ~70% of the cohort. This significant uptake highlights the growing enthusiasm for string education at Lindisfarne. Additionally, the program has achieved a remarkable 90% retention rate, with students from the 2024 immersion cohort continuing their instrumental journey into 2025. These students receive structured tuition from specialist string instrumentalists once a week with their chosen instrument.
To support students’ musical progression, Lindisfarne offers a range of string ensembles tailored to different experience levels:
• Poco Strings – An entry-level ensemble designed to transition young students from the immersion program into ensemble playing.
• Vivace Strings – A Junior School ensemble for students with over two years of experience, focusing on repertoire spanning classical and contemporary genres.
• Cantabile Strings – A non-auditioned ensemble, catering to Middle School students.
• Capriccio Strings – An invitational ensemble for our most advanced string players, catering to our Senior School cohort.
• String Quartet and String Trio – Chamber ensembles that receive specialist instruction to develop students’ musicianship, ensemble skills, and performance confidence, which intertwines with students’ elective music curriculum in stages 5 and 6.
The opportunities available to our students continue to expand as the program grows. Last year marked the inaugural Chamber
Music Concert, which provided our students with a dedicated platform to present their chosen genre of music in a purpose set environment. This event was a resounding success, and will now be an annual fixture in our performance calendar. Additionally, our students participated in external eisteddfods, offering them further opportunities to refine their musicianship and gain valuable performance experience beyond the school setting.
Lindisfarne’s one-on-one studio string tuition program continues to expand, with specialist instructors working closely with students to refine their technique and support individual musical goals. In 2024, individual string tuition grew by 35%, with an expectation of similar growth in 2025, as our Junior School Immersion Program continues to provide students and families with exposure to string music education. This structured tuition plays a key role in developing the technical proficiency and expressive abilities of our young musicians, whether they are preparing for examinations, auditions, or public performances.
The sustained growth of the Strings Program at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School reflects the school’s strong commitment to nurturing accessible musical opportunities for our students. With high participation rates, structured learning pathways, and a wealth of ensemble and performance opportunities, the program continues to provide an enriching and inspiring musical education for our students.
The Speech and Drama program at Lindisfarne is the largest of its kind in the region, with over 350 students from Kindergarten to Year 10 participating in individual, paired, or small group lessons. From our youngest performers reciting poems with friends to tackling Shakespearean monologues, each student is given the opportunity to shine on stage.
Our team of dedicated and passionate Speech and Drama tutors brings a wealth of stage experience and a deep love of performance to their teaching. Through the program, students develop into confident and articulate communicators, exploring both traditional and modern literature while refining essential stagecraft skills. These experiences prepare them for a range of performances.
Each year, students have the opportunity to perform at prestigious events, such as the Murwillumbah Festival
of Performing Arts, the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, and the Lindisfarne Drama Festival. Additionally, our talented students regularly showcase their skills at Twilight Concerts, The Big Chill Festival, Performing Arts Showcases, and Musicals.
For our more experienced students, there is the opportunity to complete Speech and Drama Exams through AMEB or Trinity College London. We are incredibly proud of our students, many of whom consistently achieve outstanding results, with numerous students earning the highest marks in the state for these exams.
Through the Speech and Drama program at Lindisfarne, we continue to nurture the next generation of confident, skilled actors, public speakers, and performers.
